The last time I was breastfeeding, it became fairly obvious as soon as I returned to work that I needed to increase my milk supply, as I wasn’t producing enough to create any sort of storage supply. My doctor recommended that I start taking the herb Fenugreek. For me personally, it only helped a little bit. And it also had a VERY interesting side effect…it made me smell like maple syrup.
Seriously. Just ask Tim.
Maybe that sounds sort of sweet and cool to you, but I hated it. It was certainly not what I wanted to smell like, but I had no choice.
Since I’m already aware that I had supply issues the last time, I’m taking a more proactive approach this time. Tim and I have discussed if the right strategy is to start taking that smelly herb from the start. I’m willing to do it, but oh my gosh, I really don’t want to.
But there is another option, and it is SO much better. I’m trading in my Fenugreek for cookies.
Introducing Milkin’ Cookies, a line of delicious baked treats created by two physicians (and moms!) to help women increase their milk supplies. You may be thinking, “Can I just buy some double-stuff Oreos and get the same results?” Afraid not, my friends. These cookies are a very special recipe, and they are stuffed with galactagogues. Those aren’t ingredients from outer space, by the way, they are ingredients found to naturally increase milk supply (for example, oatmeal, flax seed and wheat germ).
Milkin’ Cookies are made in small batches and are individually wrapped for your convenience. Most women find that they only need to eat one cookie each day to see noticeable results in supply levels. These cookies are made with NO preservatives, so they are best if eaten within 2 weeks, or they can also be frozen and simply thawed for 30 minutes before being ingested. You can purchase a 14 day sample pack ($20.99) , a 30 day supply ($44.99) or get a 3 month subscription for $119.99.
Could you make something like this yourself? Perhaps, although I can’t point you to an exact recipe. You’d have to dig around online to find one that is getting universal praise (which is what these cookies are getting!). And then you’d have to go purchase all those slightly unusual ingredients. And then you’d have to make them. And then freeze them individually. And then hope that they taste ok. But with a newborn on your hands, you won’t be busy, so this should be no problem (said with much sarcasm).
Seriously, though, I think this is one of those things that is worth paying for, because the cookies have been tested by other moms and have produced great results. Also, I should tell you that they seriously yummy. They come in two flavors: cranberry almond oatmeal and my very favorite, oatmeal chocolate chip. Both Darah and Tim love eating them, too, and they are perfectly safe to be eaten by anyone. All the ingredients are good and good for you. They are also loaded with fiber, which makes them good to eat during pregnancy! I remember that my pain medication I was on right after having Darah caused constipation…a side effect NOBODY mentioned to me. Let’s just say that I did some crying in the bathroom a few days after getting home from the hospital. My plan this time is to eat a cookie. BEST PLAN EVER!
Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader is going to win a 14 day supply of Milkin’ Cookies! Yum!!

I’m nursing my daughter and the best tip I have is to see a lactation consultant if you’re having problems. I didn’t nurse my son because I couldn’t get him to latch on. With my daughter, I asked for help & it was soooo useful. You can watch 101 videos or read books about breastfeeding but nothing beats a human being next to you showing you how to nurse.

Breastfeeding my son was an experience to say the least, he was not(and 2 years later still isn’t) a good eater, so it would take at least an hour for him to eat. After three months I returned to work and couldn’t keep up with breastfeeding, although I would have loved to try longer.

I learned that for me, it didn’t matter if the breast pump was priced $20 or $200, I didn’t like it! I tried a few and I just thought they weren’t worth the hassle. I’m sure many people out there have had wonderful experiences with them, but I doubt I will even get that thing out of storage with the next baby!

I love nursing, but hate pumping. Now I have to pump more often to get enough for my son, which makes the day that much harder.
Holly Hook says
I’ve always believed that breastfeeding is the only way to nurse a baby, formula isn’t natural and shouldn’t be pumped into your child at the most crucial stage of their lives and development.
Kelly says
I love the bonding time with my little ones!

I attempted with my first little one, she had to be in the NICU for a week and that messed everything up. I did breast feed exclusively for 4 months with her, but when she was 4 months old she decided to wean herself and we had to go on to bottles. I am expecting a little one in April and I am hoping it will work out better!
Lana Bradstream says
I tried breastfeeding, but then I stopped producing as much milk as I should have been.

My advise is to stick with it. Every child is different and they BF differently. Do not get upset, just try different holding your baby different or trying other things.

BFing was very tough for me in the beginning, but I was determined to make it work! No matter how tired or frustrated you may become, just keep trying! Especially if it is something you truly want! My daughter is now 4 months old, and my favorite parts of the day are when we get to snuggle for a feed!

I haven’t started to breastfeed yet, as I’m due with my first in March. But I have attended a breastfeeding class which I found pretty helpful. They said breastfed babies have lower incidences of asthma, autism and diabetes. Breast milk is pretty powerful stuff!

I just had my daughter on January 15th, and with many trips to a lactation consultant and a baby dropping weight quickly, we found that I was not producing enough milk to breastfeed. I too have been taking Fenugreek and hate how it makes me smell. Would love to try these out! and then chase them with a Guinness.

I’m expecting my first in early June, so I’m still reading up on breastfeeding.
Jessica says
I’d LOVE to try these…. my first nursing experience was awful! My little one had reflux and a weak suck so I was only able to nurse for the first month or so. Then I had to pump exclusively, but I only made it to 6 months due to low milk supply. I tried everything to increase it too! I’m due with number two on the 17th and hope it goes much better this time around 🙂
Annie says
Expecting our first in May, and these tips/advice are excellent to help me prepare for feeding our little one.

I started breastfeeding for the first time 5 months ago. Breastfeeding was very difficult for me in the beginning. I had to be on magnesium during labor, so when my baby was born, we couldn’t begin it right away like every website suggests and when I was able to try for the first time he didn’t want to eat. Then, he wouldn’t latch. After the first few days, we got it! It hurt at first and I got bruises the first few weeks. After the first month it became a breeze! I want to encourage every mom to stick to it! I am so glad I did. I went back to work a week after my son was born. So I have been having to pump, but i need something to increase my supply. This would be awesome!
Marnely Rodriguez says
I’d love to win these for my best friend, who is about to give birth soon!

I haven’t started breastfeeding yet (due in April). I have heard about drinking beer, but I don’t know if this true or just an old wives tale.
I would much rather have cookies!
