A few weeks ago, I surprised Darah with an introduction to Pricess Sofia by way of the movie Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess. I captured her reaction to seeing this new princess for the first time:
Pretty cute, right? But really, think about it. ALL of the Disney princesses that are so popular are adult, or at least teenagers. This princess is young, so she really speaks to the young crowd. I’m not alone in thinking this, though. There is proof! Sofia the First, who also has a television series on Disney Junior, is the #1 cable tv series among both boys and girls ages 2-5!
I haven’t had the pleasure of watching the television series yet, but I really enjoyed the movie. It has enough wit to hold the attention of adults without losing sight of its main viewers: young children. I also really like the qualities that are emphasized in the movie: honesty, generosity, and kindness are lauded as characteristics of a strong person.
I highly recommend this movie, and if you have Disney Junior on your television but haven’t yet seen Sofia the First, be sure to find it and watch it (or record it on your DVR). We will most definitely be watching out for more episodes that we can access, and we’ll be keeping an eye on the Disney Store, which has an entire line of Sofia the First apparel and toys available.
Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win bring Princess Sofia home through a copy of Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess!

My daughter absolutely loves this show! She’s been asking me constantly for the DVD and gas to watch all the episodes. She calls Sofia her twin sister because they look exactly alike except for the eye color. Its crazy 🙂
Alanna says
Sammy really likes the show, but I don’t like her to watch it because I feel like the blonde step-sister is really awful. I don’t like her mean attitude. Do you feel like the qualities Sophia learns (honesty, kindness, etc.) are strong enough to show kids that the sister’s behavior is wrong? I’m just afraid Sammy will model herself after the mean girl and not the nice one!
Tiffany Merritt says
Yes, the step-sister does make some poor choices. I think there are some good opportunities there to talk with your child about the end result of treating others poorly. Even if it may seem to be the most beneficial choice in the short term, it never pays off in the end!
With that said, though, if you ever just feel uncomfortable with the message presented in a show, I’m a big advocate for turning it off. That’s actually why we don’t watch the Charlie Brown shows on Netflix. Those kids are constantly calling each other names!
beth cole says
We played the tea time game. Both of my kids love this series!!
