Trying Out Better Life Cleaners (As Seen on Shark Tank)

March 12, 2014 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Complimentary products were provided for review. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

If you watch the show Shark Tank, where businesses present their products and services for consideration to a team of investors, then you likely saw Better Life Cleaners featured. This is an entire line of cleaners that is so non-toxic that one of the founders literally put his money where is mouth is and sprayed the cleaners in his mouth in front of the team evaluating him on the show.

And I have to say, that gave these products a lot of street cred! As someone who has a toddler on her heels all day, wanting to do anything and everything that mommy does, having cleaners that are TRULY safe my my child to touch, and yes, even ingest (God forbid) is important.

Earlier today, for example, I was trying out the scrubbing product called “Even the Kitchen Sink.” And guess what? Layah tasted it. No, of course, not by intention. I simply set the bottle down and was cleaning an area of our stainless steel dishwasher front, and then I turned around in time to see a white speck of cleaner on Layah’s fingers, headed straight to her lips. It reached her mouth before I did, and while I wiped it off once I reached her, I also didn’t sweat it.

Speaking of that cleaner, I wanted to highlight that it is a product intended to use on multiple surfaces, such as glass stove tops, stainless steel, toilets, tile, grout, etc. It is a natural cleansing scrubber that offers scratch free shine. Here are my before and after shots:

While Even the Kitchen Sink didn’t provide a completely streak-free shine, I think its versatility of use, combined with its extremely safe solution make it a powerhouse tool to keep in your cleaning cabinet. I definitely recommend this one!

The other product in the lot that I personally thought was a winner was Simply Floored! The scent was awesome, first of all (citrus mint). And I noticed that it made quick work of messes on the floor that were dried on, which was really impressive. This product is safe for hardwood, tile, marble, bamboo, vinyl, laminate and other sealed floors. It also left a nice shine. This is terrific for spot treating your floors in between mopping sessions (and around here, mopping sessions are far too infrequent, so having something like this on hand is a very good thing).

So, where do you find these products? Better Life can be found online, and the website also offers a store locator if you just type in your zip code! Our local Whole Foods location popped up as the nearest in-store distributor.

Have you tried Better Life products? Are you on the hunt for eco-friendly cleaning solutions that are affordable?

Eco-Friendly Alternative to Comet: Emily by Eco-Me

April 25, 2012 · by Tiffany Merritt · 85 Comments

Are you still using toxic cleaning products in your home? The two main reasons I have heard people cite when explaining why they aren’t going green with their cleaning products are cost and effectiveness.

If either one of those (or both!) is true for you, then you’ve officially run out of excuses, because there’s a very affordable line of products out called Eco-Me and they can go toe-to-toe with your extra strength chemicals!

As we were preparing to move out of our old house, we needed to give our tub a serious scrub. Tim tries to clean it once a week, but he doesn’t typically do a thorough scrubbing. We tested out a product called Emily
(all the products have people names, which is cute). Emily is a gentle abrasive that can safely be used in the bathroom and in the kitchen (even on pots and pans!). We put this product to the test on our tub, and we were really embarrassed to see just how much gunk came off our tub when cleaning with it. We were also really impressed! Check it out, and try not to judge!

Eco-Me has an excellent range of products for all your cleaning needs, and can be found at Alice.com, or on Amazon! You can also search for a local store or see a complete list of online retailers here. Emily can be purchased for a very reasonable $5.39 for 16 ounces! A little goes a long way, too!

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win the Eco Me product Emily, just like I reviewed! You will love it!

Best Eco-friendly Stain Remover and Hand Soap: Ecover!

October 18, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 73 Comments

Ecover is an eco-friendly household product company. You’ve likely heard of them, as they have been around for 30 years, working hard to perfect the power of their products without compromising their gentle footprint on nature.

eco friendly stain remover My family has been working hard to switch out all our household products for green alternatives. One area where I haven’t known how to go green, though, was with stain removers for clothing. I thought my only options were to use harsh chemicals. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to try Ecover’s eco-friendly stain remover! I’ve found it to be effective on lifting stains (including berry stains, which Darah gets frequently). It’s also made from plant-based products, so it has very minimal impact on aquatic life, which is much more than I can say for the stain removers I typically turn to. I will definitely be purchasing this product again.

Another area that I haven’t really given much thought to is hand soap. I know some soaps are more harsh than others, but I thought that on the whole, soap was soap, and it wasn’t very full of chemicals. Ecover’s eco-friendly hand soap is suitable for sensitive skin and contains only natural fragrances (the fragrance piece is where many of those yucky chemicals sneak into soaps). I love that it contains aloe vera to help sooth skin and lavender essential oils for a nice, light scent.

One of my very favorite things about Ecover is how easy it is to find locally! They have a list of places where you can purchase it, and it is very likely that you will have one of these stores near you. If not, no worries! Ecover has a great online store through Alice.com. Check it out; I think you’ll be REALLY impressed with their price points! The stain remover is $4.13 and the hand soap is just $4.54. At these prices, you might as well try out several things at once! I know I am planning on purchasing their dish washing detergent in the near future.

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win the stain remover and the hand soap to try for yourself! Woo hoo!
