Drill Set Meets Lite Brite: The New Favorite Toy in the House

April 7, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Product provided for review consideration. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

It can tough to choose “good” toys for your kids. I’m talking about the ones that will get played with again and again and again. Sometimes you are SURE you have hit the nail on the head, only to find your selection quickly at the bottom of the toy chest, languishing (I’m looking at YOU, Elsa doll…). I even find myself surprised from time to time with the toys that become the biggest hits. Perhaps a gift was received that I didn’t choose and wouldn’t have chosen for the girls, and yet they go nuts over it.

Well, today I’ve got a toy that I suspected would be well-loved at my house, but that has even surpassed the degree of popularity I thought it would have. Let me introduce you to THE HOTTEST TOY in our home right now (and for the past few weeks!).

design and drill 3 This is the Design & Drill Brightworks from Educational Insights (ARV $39.99). I think of it as the perfect marriage between the Lite Brite our generation grew up using and a drill set. It comes with a drill gun that kids can easily change the setting on (forward or reverse) as well as the drill head. My youngest, who is just about to turn 3, is positively smitten with this set. She will sit for 15 minutes at a time working very hard on creating a design that she likes with the various color screws.

design and drill 2 The set actually comes with a booklet that shows different pattern examples that kids can try out, but so far my girls prefer to do their own thing The fact that it lights up just adds another element of fun.

design and drill 1 I love this toy because it helps develop hand-eye coordination and it encourages creativity, as well as increases a child’s comfort level with using tools.

A Few Recommendations

I do have a few thoughts on how the product can be improved for the future. My primary suggestion is simply to include batteries, as both the drill board and the drill require batteries (of different sizes) before the toy can be used. I’d rather pay a few more dollars and have it ready to go than to have to make a special trip to the store.

I’d also like to see the set come with a bag of some sort for the screws. I think a little drawstring bag will do the trick. I am having to use a plastic bag that seals, and that’s a little bit tricky for my youngest to get into and to use for putting the screws away.

Despite the areas where improvements could be made, I would still very strongly recommend this toy based on the amount of play time it seems to get. My girls reach for it every single day without fail, and I’m impressed by how long it captures their attention. Great job, Educational Insights!

I’d love to hear what the hottest toy is in your house right now! Leave me a comment to let me know!

Awesome Toy for Outdoor Enthusiasts (and Dinosaur Fans!)

October 11, 2014 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Product provided for consideration. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always. Affiliate links may be included.

Here’s a great new toy for any child who loves to play outside, and who also loves dinosaurs.

Check out the Dino Construction Company dinosaurs, available at Educational Insights and on Amazon. There are actually four different awesome dinos to choose from (Wrecker the T-Rex Skid Loader, T-Top the Triceratops Bulldozer, Spike the Ankylosaurus Steam Roller, and the one shown here, Boom the Brachiosaurus Backhoe).

I immediately noticed how well put together the toy seemed to be, and how strong the plastic was. This is definitely a toy that is built with children in mind, and with their rough play habits in mind, too. Dino Construction Company vehicles are ready to get dirty and to get some serious play time. The toys don’t require any batteries, but rather, just a bit of imagination.

It’s hard not to jump right in to an imaginary world of play with a toy that is this creative! These retail for $39.99, but watch Amazon, because at the time of this writing, they were marked down a bit from that price (the steam roller is only $27 right now!).

This toy will be proudly under our tree this Christmas, and I’m already looking forward to the fun we will all have with it! We might even need to make a special construction “pit” in our backyard!

A Concentration Game We Love: Robot Face Race

October 4, 2014 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Product provided for consideration from Educational Insights. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always. Affiliate links may be included; I only promote what I love.

My little ones (ages 5 and 2) both really love to play board games, but finding something that is entertaining and challenging for them both is quite tough, as you can imagine!

robot face race concentration game 1

Robot Face Race is a game that can work for both of my girls if I tweak the rules just a wee bit, and I really love how this concentration game helps both of my girls practice focusing.

Here’s the concept: “A crazy inventor has built dozens of robot bodies and he needs your help finding the perfect heads. Shake the Robot Randomizer to reveal a robot’s features. Scan the robot heads on the board until you find the match. Find it first and collect a robot scoring token. The first player with five tokens wins. For 2 to 4 players. Ages 4 and up.”

robot face race concentration game 2

Ok, so when we play this game, I have Darah shake up the robot randomizer to determine which robot we are seeking. It has 5 potential colors but only 4 features, so at any given time there is one color not in play (one of the holes is deeper than the others so that 1 color ball isn’t showing, if that makes sense).

robot face race concentration game 3

At this point, I usually have Darah looking for two or three of the attributes (for example, purple face, green mouth, yellow nose) and I will have Layah just look for one, such as green mouth. When someone finds what they are looking for, they place one of their game tokens on the board. The person who puts all their tokens down first wins, though we aren’t focused on that part of the game just yet.

robot face race concentration game

What I really like about the game is that you can have players with a wide variety of skill and concentration levels playing at the same time, as long as you give those players slightly modified things that they are seeking. A 10-year-old could easily play with a 5-year-old this way. It’s also quite challenging, as there is only 1 corresponding robot face for every combination of 4 colors on the board. This makes it really entertaining for older kids who may be totally over the likes of Candy Land. Yet it can still be fun for the younger crowd if you tailor it to the challenge level that is appropriate for them. At $19.99, I think it’s a really fun choice for a new board game! We are thoroughly enjoying it!

Robot Face Race can be purchased at Educational Insights or at Amazon.

Magic Moves Electric Wand Review and GIVEAWAY!!!

November 3, 2012 · by Tiffany Merritt · 180 Comments

If you have a preschooler, then you know that those little ones need time each day to MOVE, MOVE, MOVE!!! We live in a part of the country with mild weather, so the number of days that outside play are an option are many. But even we get those rainy days, and I suspect that during the winter there will be some days when it is just too darn cold to play outside.

And on those days, I’ll be SO glad we have the Magic Moves Electric Wand, available through Educational Insights.

This fun device was a hit from the second it came out of its package. It is a microphone with two different buttons (one for play, and one for repeat). It has 26 different colorful, twinkling light shows that encourage kids to get moving. And it has 90 different commands for fun motions to make. That’s a lot of moving around, folks!

The repeat button is very handy because there are certain moves that the kids are going to like so much that they will want to do them again. We particularly enjoy, “STOMP like a dinosaur!”

This is a very fun game that can be played most anywhere you are and you can play for just a minute or two, or go as long as your child wants. The microphone will turn itself off after 2 minutes of nonuse.

I have really enjoyed playing this with Darah. Sometimes I run out of ideas for fun things to pretend to do, and the Magic Moves Electric Wand helps me think of things we can pretend to be, and helps me demonstrate different fun motions to make. I very highly recommend this toy for any child with energy that needs to get used up on a daily basis (so basically, every kid!). You can purchase Magic Moves for just $19.99.

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win a Magic Moves microphone from Educational Insights!

Making Logical Mathematical Estimates: Estimation Station Review and GIVEAWAY!!!

September 27, 2012 · by Tiffany Merritt · 88 Comments

Educational Insights is already one of the very best destinations for fantastic products that make learning so much fun. But I’m so impressed with how they just keep getting better and better. They have recently launched a fundraising program that I want to make sure you all know about. It’s completely free to join, and they offer 20% cash back on all purchases made by you and anyone you refer to them with a special promo code you will receive at sign up. It is an incredible way to earn funds for your child’s school, or even for an individual classroom! Get the full scoop here!

With the holidays fast approaching, there are so many wonderful options for gifts from Educational Insights. Today I’m featuring a product that helps promote math and logic skills. It’s called Estimation Station. What I love about this product (and what I’m consistently finding with most every Educational Insights product) is that it’s not a one-hit wonder. There are over a week’s worth of activity suggestions with this one product, including estimation, counting, place value, comparing and ordering number, making prediction, graphing, statistics and mathematical reasoning. That’s a lot of awesome concepts to derive from one toy!

Darah is still a bit too young to use this toy, as it is ideal for ages 5-9. When we introduce it to her, though, we can start with larger objects (like giant marshmallows!) and build up from there. I absolutely love this hands-on application of mathematical concepts. This can even be a really creative way to have kids put a little bit of work in prior to getting a special treat, like gumballs or jelly beans. Estimation Station retails for $14.99 and really does bring math to life in an exciting way for young children.

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win Estimation Station!

So Many AWESOME Discounts from Educational Insights and a GIVEAWAY!!!

July 26, 2012 · by Tiffany Merritt · 53 Comments

Educational Insights has got to be one of the very best online destinations for educational materials that kids will really love.

I’ve mentioned before Hot Dots and how much Darah enjoys playing with them. Thanks to these cards, she is learning logic, patterns, sequencing, letter recognition (uppercase and lowercase) and basic science. I’m so excited that there are so many different types of Hot Dots cards for her to use as she gets older and is ready for more complex concepts. We recently snagged some cards that I’m going to keep in our game closet for about 6 more months before trying them out with her. I haven’t even told her about them, because I know she’d want to give them a whirl right away if she saw them! But since she is still working on mastering her sets that are already open, I think we should just stick with those, for now.

Educational Insights has a really impressive selection of Hot Dots cards, and I very highly recommend them for kids. We have certainly enjoyed the Hot Dots, Jr. sets, and look forward to continuing to use the Hot Dots sets as she grows. And before you know it, Layah will be using them, too!

I also want to point out that Educational Insights has a Pinterest page, and it is loaded with great ideas for kids educational activities. In the future, they are going to be holding Pinterest exclusive giveaways, so be sure to follow them there so you don’t miss out!

But wait, there’s more! You can earn $10 off an EducationalInsights.com purchase just be filling out a SUPER short (4 questions!) suvey here: http://www.educationalinsights.com/category/id/119977.do

Hot Dots Jr. Alphabet Cards Review and GIVEAWAY!!!

March 10, 2012 · by Tiffany Merritt · 93 Comments

We have a FANTASTIC new educational toy at our house, and I’m so excited to share it with you! It comes to us from Educational Insights, an online store that is packed with really great games and toys that help children learn important concepts.

Hot Dots, Jr. is an interactive set of flash cards. We received the beginning alphabet cards. You use these cards in conjunction with a special talking pen that helps children know if they have solved the problem on the card correctly, or if they need to try again. Darah has Kat, and they also offer Ace the dog. Kat’s eyes turn green and she purrs when Darah selects the right answer. She meows when Darah needs to try again.

The cards in the beginning phonics set have various problems that need to be solved. Darah is just now mastering the set of cards that has her match upper case and lower case letters. We are now moving into the cards that also have her match upper and lower case letter, but offer more options and seem to be a bit more difficult. Darah absolutely LOVES to do these flash cards, and she does not get discouraged when she misses the answer. She remains very focused and also practices the sounds the letters make while doing her work. Its really pretty awesome to watch!

I will most definitely be getting more of these cards for her to work with because she has responded so well to them. I also like that they come in a compact case with a velcro lid and a canvas handle for easy storage as well as easy access by Darah. She can pull these out on her own and put them away on her own, which is really nice.

Hot Dots, Jr. card sets retail for $14.99 each and the talking pens retail for $12.99 each. I highly recommend these products as a way to keep the learning that is happening at school also happening at home.

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win a Hot Dots Jr. card set and a talking pen!
