When Potty Training Doesn’t Go As Planned: Huggies to the Rescue

September 8, 2014 · by Tiffany Merritt · 5 Comments

This post brought to you by Huggies and Kleenex. All opinions are 100% mine.

You guys, I have a confession to make: Layah, who is now 2 years and 4 months old, is still not fully potty trained. That may not sounds like anything strange until you hear that we have been working with her on learning to use the potty for over a year now.

But here’t the thing: our first child was 100% out of diapers by 20 months. We never even bought training pants. I actually wrote a post about how we potty trained so early, and it is one of my all-time most popular posts. Google basically thinks I’m an expert on how to get your toddler to give up diapers at a really young age.

And you know what? I sort of thought I was an expert at that, too! That is, until Layah had her own ideas about how potty training would go down. She knows how to the use the potty, and she will typically successfully use the potty anywhere from 1-3 times per day. But if she doesn’t feel like doing it, then guess what? SHE WON’T!!!

I can’t tell you how many times I have declared that we are through with diapers. At least half a dozen. Just when I think we’re all done, she decides that she isn’t quite done, after all.

So once again I found myself picking up some Huggies® at Sam’s Club. These are great to send it to school with her because they are roomy (I bought size 5 diapers…a true first for us!) and because they have a VERY cool double-grip feature. I always liked Huggies Little Movers when I used them with Darah, but this is a new and improved version, and it’s really great! We haven’t had any problems with it overnight and because it grips in two places, Layah doesn’t try too much to take them off, either. She will sometimes get past the first grip, and then she gives up when she realizes that the diaper didn’t fall off. Score!!!

And if you want to know about early potty training, here’s my new advice on the topic: it’s 10% about what you are doing to train and 90% about when your child is ready. Good luck!

Another Resource

If you are working hard on potty training right now and need some help figuring out how to wrap it all up and be done, I highly recommend Potty Train in a Weekend by fellow blogger Becky Mansfield. It’s a great affordable resource that you can download as soon as you purchase it. It gets rave reviews from parents everywhere who aren’t sure how to keep potty training from going on and on forever! It’s not something I knew about when we were going through all of this, but based on what I’ve heard from people who have used the book, it would have helped us! Good luck!

Babies on the Move – What’s Your #MovingMoment?

August 28, 2014 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

This post brought to you by Huggies® Little Movers. All opinions are 100% mine.

by Alanna Peters

I always hear people talking about how sad they are that their babies are growing too fast. I get it but, in all honesty, I’m kind of looking forward to the time when my baby doesn’t need my constant attention. Don’t get me wrong…I adore my sweet, chubby baby and I love that I’m the one she wants – that I’m the one that can solve all her problems and make everything right in her world. But at the same time, Mama needs a break! I’m having so much fun watching her grow and become an independent little person, and it’s so exciting watching her move and find her way around in this big, big world.

I know you’re not supposed to compare your children to one another, but it’s so interesting to see how they are the same and how they differ. When my girls were born I felt like they were duplicates of each other – same coloring, same length, and only an ounce difference in weight. The similarities have really stopped there though. They look COMPLETELY different from each other. Their personalities are totally different. And my little one? HUGE. I mean really, she is growing SOOO fast! She’s totally surpassed where her sister was at this age. She’s already got two teeth (at 5 1/2 months), where her sister didn’t even start teething until over 10 months. My oldest didn’t crawl until 8 1/2 months but started walking at 10 months. I’m so curious to see how the little one gets moving!

Right now my little baby is a master at spinning a 180, either on her tummy or her back. She also sits like a champ and is starting to propel herself forward in an attempt to crawl. She will even occasionally roll (or at least try to) when the urge strikes. She’s SO excited to start exploring her world!

One new concern with a baby on the move is finding a diaper that moves with her. Over the past few months we’ve tried several diaper brands and with some of them we get leaks. LOTS of leaks. Every baby is shaped differently so obviously different diaper brands are going to fit babies’ legs and waists differently, but they are all pretty much the same when it comes to the grippy tabs. That is, until the new Huggies®  Little Movers diapers came along!

KeepUp

These diapers are awesome – I was impressed right away. Those grippy tabs? TWO layers, guys. Two! Take a look at this. That extra level of soft, Velcro grippiness keeps the diaper in place on my baby, even when she’s spinning in a circle.

DoubleGripTabs

The waistband is stretchy and makes for a nice, snug fit with the protection of the Huggies LeakLock system. They even have new colors and graphics! I’m not a big character fan but I actually love these new Mickey Mouse designs. The colors are so bright and fun!

CutieBootie

Want to try Huggies Little Movers? (I know you do!) Right now you can upload a photo or video of your baby’s Moving Moment and get a $2 coupon! I uploaded a photo of my little cutie sitting unassisted for the first time. She was SOOOO proud of herself. (And isn’t she totally adorable?!)

Not sure which moment to share? Get inspired by these fun, exclusive movements and activities designed by Huggies and celebrity fitness instructor and mom, Nikki Glor.   They will get baby and parents moving! Our favorite is the Patty Cake Crunch and BackRoll. It helps to build her lower body strength and balance, and it works my core. (And believe me, I need that right now!) The Huggies Little Movers waistband stretches as my baby balances and flips. We also like to Act Like Animals together – she LOVES it when I’m down on the floor enjoying tummy time with her (and we are both working our cores)! We aren’t ready for all the exercises yet, as they are geared for babies of all developmental stages. I’m looking forward to doing more and more of these activities with her as she grows – not only do they get her moving but they  help me stay fit too!

Now, head on over to Huggies.com/moments and Share your Moving Moment. Along with your coupon, you’ll also have a chance to be featured on the Huggies Facebook Page!

My Thoughts On Swim Diapers After Trying Them…For the First Time!

June 24, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 8 Comments

This shop is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group™ and Huggies, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #HuggiesSwimmers  http://cmp.ly/3/8vNxcO.

Mommy confession time: until last weekend, I had never EVER purchased or even used swim diapers on my kids.

Before you start thinking that I’m the gross mom who doesn’t pay attention to pool rules, I HAVE been using cloth diapers to serve as swim diapers. And if I’m being totally honest with you, I never really saw the point of using any type of swim diaper, cloth or disposable, other than to contain poo, should that happen while you are playing in the water. Does it really hold in the pee? I certainly had my doubts…

But I noticed a sweet $1.50 off coupon for Huggies Little Swimmers at Target, and decided this was the right time to at least give this product a try.

So I headed to Target with my coupon printed and ready to go, and I made my way over to the baby section. Ok, let’s be real. First I stopped by the clearance racks of the women’s clothing department (finds included a $9 red belted dress, a $15 teal green blazer and a $4 emerald green tank top. Score!!!). So after that most excellent diversion, I went to the baby section and I located the #Huggiesswimmers diapers. I made sure it was a match with my coupon, and then loaded it into my cart.

Over the weekend, I certainly didn’t have to twist anyone’s arms to go outside and play with the water table. It is a source of much fun for my girls, and I love it, too, because I can hang back a little bit while they play and read an interesting book check Facebook. I learned from the very first time that they played with the splash table to have them in swimsuits, or at the very least, to have them in clothes that could get COMPLETELY soaked. And if you add a little dish soap to the water…get ready for miles of smiles!

One thing I noticed about the Huggies Little Swimmers is that they were very trim and didn’t stick out much from the sides of the swimsuit. My cloth diapers definitely stick out much more than this, so I thought that aesthetically, the Little Swimmers looked a lot better.

Layah loved the water so much that she insisted on sitting in the splash table to finish up her play time. Surely this would be the ultimate test for the diaper….time to get completely SOAKED!!!

After she played in there for a good 15 minutes, it was time to take her out. I was already smirking, just knowing that I’d see a bloated diaper, all filled up with water and looking gross. Here’s what I actually saw:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My jaw actually dropped when I pulled her out. This “soaked” diaper is no fluffier than it was when it was dry. That means that she is weighted down by a water-logged hiney while she continues her play. If I put an insert into her cloth diaper when she is doing water play (which I often do), then this is BIG difference between what I normally use and Huggies Little Swimmers. I was totally skeptical of this product, but I have to tell you honestly: I’m really impressed with it.

Aside from outside play at our house, I’m actually really looking forward to using these any time we go swimming somewhere. If I’m carrying Huggies Little Swimmers with us on the splash park, for example, I don’t have to bring home a soggy, wet diaper to clean. That makes for less mess for me. We are all headed to a conference later this month out of town and there are several swimming options there. If I had been using cloth for the trip, I would have had a few days’ worth of really wet diapers to bring back home. That would have been pretty gross, and I would have even been putting the diapers at risk of getting moldy. So now that I think about it, it would have been a really bad idea to take cloth. With Huggies Little Swimmers, I don’t have to worry about that!

Is your little one rockin’ the swim diaper this year? Am I the only mama on the planet who hadn’t tried them until recently? If you’ve got them on your shopping list, don’t forget about that great coupon for $1.50 off at Target!
