Kohl’s Fall Fashion Finds for Men (My 90% off Find!)

October 1, 2014 · by Tiffany Merritt · 17 Comments

Thanks to Kohl’s for sending a gift card my way. All thoughts, opinions, and expenses beyond the gift card amount are my own.

One of my very favorite stores to shop at, both online and in-store, is Kohl’s. I have a few reasons why I love them so very much.

1. My mother-in-law used to work at customer service at Kohl’s and I remember stories from her about how Kohl’s would always bend over backwards to ensure that the customer was satisfied. It honestly reminded me of the stories you hear about the customer service offered at stores that are much higher end. I was very impressed with her stories, and I have found them to be true any time I have been to customer service, as well. Returns are hassle-free and employees are very friendly and helpful.

2. Kohl’s knows how to have a sale! This store is NOT afraid to mark stuff down. I routinely find things at Kohl’s that are similar in price to what I might pay at a consignment or even thrift store. Only the item’s at Kohl’s are new with tags. Gotta love that!

3. Kohl’s stays on trend. I love the designer collaborations Kohl’s has (Vera Wang and Marc Anthony are two that come to mind). Those pieces are sharp and right on trend, and at a price point my budget can handle.

I particularly like heading to Kohl’s whenever my husband, Tim, is in need of some new items for work. From full suits to business casual, Kohl’s has a wide range of items for every work wardrobe. We headed to the store looking to spend around $100, and hoping we could pull together an outfit. In the end, we spent $125 (including tax), but we got TWO work appropriate outfits!

kohls for men 6 Tim was wearing this brown sweater when we went into the store, and we actually used it as a building piece for putting something together that was very “fall.” We quickly found this Arrow Plaid Button-Down shirt (on sale for $26.99) and knew it was just perfect. I then headed over to the tie section to see what I could coordinate with it to dress it up a bit for work. I opted for something with a very minimal pattern since the shirt already had a lot going on. The Izod Hilton Grid Tie is what I chose (on sale for $24.99). I think it turned out great!

Then we looked for a pair of pants that we liked. I pulled many different pairs of pants for Tim, and he had a strong preference for one set. We were shocked and totally thrilled when we realized that checkout that these pants were on MEGA markdown. They were originally $54 and we paid $5.40 for them. Talk about the deal of the day!!!

In total, the shirt, tie and pants, all from Kohl’s, set us back $57.38 plus tax. That is REALLY awesome (but you already knew that, didn’t you?!).

While we were in the store, Tim requested a dressy pair of gray slacks, and decided on this pair from Docker’s (on sale for $34.99). I only buy flat front pants for him. Can anyone enlighten me on why pleated pants are still being made? They totally baffle me…I think they are flattering to 0% of the people who wear them. Anyway, Tim said this pair of pants was really comfortable, which he appreciates immensely. He rides his bike to work every day, so he needs to balance comfort with the fact that he needs to look office appropriate. These pants are perfect.

This Apt. 9 Modern Fit Striped Shirt (on sale for $21.99). I was very impressed with the number of slim cut shirts I saw at Kohl’s while we were shopping. So many men wear their shirts WAY too big and baggy, and it isn’t flattering at all. You don’t need excess fabric hanging off your body like that, fellas. Go for the slimmer cut, even if you aren’t slim, yourself. You will look better in something that actually fits you, instead of something that just hangs on you, I promise!

So this second outfit of a shirt and pants cost $56.98 plus tax. Another great buy! And even though we somehow magically ended up with a pair of pants that was 90% off, I didn’t even go through their clearance section. They had rows and rows of stuff 60% off, so there were more great deals to be had, but we just ran out of time. Additionally, I earned $20 in Kohl’s cash that I can use starting this Sunday. It literally works like cash in the store. I don’t have a minimum purchase that I need to make. I’ve just got $20 to spend freely! I will most likely spend it on some items for the girls for our upcoming Disney trip. Kohl’s has a TON of cute Disney apparel! 🙂

Do you shop at Kohl’s for yourself or for other family members? Have you ever stumbled upon a killer deal like our 90% off pants find? I’d love to hear about it! I thought the other deals we had were decent, too, and we shopped without even paying attention to the price tags. It’s nice to know that you aren’t going to be shocked in a bad way when you get to the checkout counter!

Spring Fashion Finds for Toddlers, $5 and Under!

February 13, 2014 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

As you know, I’m doing some spring fashion shopping this week (we have 6 inches of snow outside…what else could I be doing ??). Yesterday I snagged a beautiful green skinny belt for $5.99 with free shipping, and this morning, I went shopping for my girls, and I was looking for bargain prices.

I just did a lot of shopping at Sophia’s Style, which is an online retailer known for their DEEP discounts on adorable fashions. Here’s a selection of some of my finds this morning, with NOTHING being over $5! 🙂 Affiliate links are included (I only promote what I already love!).

Blue Straw Cowboy Hat ($2.88)

Hot Pink Flower Shirt ($3.88)

Purple Floral Ruffle Top ($3.88)

Fuscia and Green Top ($3.88)

Pink Checkered Skort ($4.59)

Navy and White Tankini ($5.00)

Sizes are limited because their inventory goes really fast, but poke around on the site and see what you can find. You can shop by size, which makes your search go a bit faster! Shipping is $7.99, which is a bit high in my opinion, but I think you’ll find A LOT of stuff you might want, and you can even order some things in advance for birthdays and even Christmas (at these prices, who can blame you?!).

COUPON CODE: To save even more, use coupon code TAKE10  to take an extra 10% off when you spend $50 or more. There’s also code PYTTHR which will save you 20%, but that code is only good on regular priced merchandise, FYI.

Vintage Style from Shabby Apple: Truman Dress

October 19, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 6 Comments

For several years now I have admired the vintage clothing looks that are offered by Shabby Apple. I even own a few pieces, and they provide very distinct looks in my wardrobe, always having a nod to decades of the past, which I think is fun.

I also find that Shabby Apple garments, in general, tends to have a more modest look to them. They are less revealing, but still full of design details that make the pieces very interesting.

I recently had the opportunity to try out the Truman dress, which is in many ways an excellent dress option for the fall and winter. My dress does need to be hemmed to have quite a few inches removed in order to hit me at the right length, so do keep that in mind when checking out the photos!

Based on the reviews online, I went a size up from my normal size for this dress, and I’m glad I did. While it feels a bit large in the sleeves, I feel comfortable in the dress, overall, and like I can use the belt to accentuate my waist, rather than just having tight fabric clinging to my body. That would NOT be a great look for me, personally, but more power to you if you can rock it!

I absolutely love the cowl neck, which is one of my very favorite necklines to wear. This one doesn’t dip down nearly as low as other cowl necks that I own, though, which makes it different.

The sleeves hit me a bit lower than I think they should (remember, I’m only 5 foot 1, and I’m sure the model on the Shabby Apple website was something closer to 5 foot 10). And the sleeves, altogether, do leave me a little unsure about the overall look. I’m just not used to wearing sleeves that hit so far down. Basically, there’s a lot of fabric here, and it is such a departure from the normal look for me that I am having trouble discerning if I’m wearing the dress, or if the dress is wearing me, know what I mean?

I did really enjoy pulling out my vintage screwback earrings that I bought at an antique store for my best friend’s wedding 8 years ago. They are from the 1950s, and they add a pop of shine that I think the outfit needs. I also think this is the type of outfit that pairs well with a bold red lipstick. I think a dress that is modest in its nature really helps bring attention up to one’s face, so it is a good time to wear that power color (but just one…don’t go crazy with your lipstick AND your eyeshadow!).

Here are my little models-in-training out with me on the shoot. They are getting very used to heading outside in the morning to “take some pictures for Stuff Parents Need.” They are such cuties, and I often laugh about the impression I give them of what it means to go to work! As my blogging friend Brandy says, “Blogging makes your life weird!” But I adore it and get a lot of joy out of being a “real life, real body” clothing model for you guys!

So friends, I’m curious, what do you think about this outfit? Is it interesting to you, or just too much dress? Should I get it hemmed and rock the look this year, or is this a style better left to a different body type (i.e. much taller)?
