Chat With a Pharmacist Anytime At the Corner of Happy and Healthy

February 3, 2014 · by Tiffany Merritt · 4 Comments

Isn’t it pretty much ALWAYS the case that when you need to chat with a pharmacist, it’s in the middle of the night? We had such a situation arise a few weeks ago when my sister-in-law and niece were visiting us and my SIL realized, after much crying on the part of her daughter, that her daughter had contracted pin worms.

WORMS, PEOPLE!

Here’s a fun little factoid for you: humans can get worms! I’m sure there’s more than one kind that we can get, but the pin worm is very painful, is found through your stool (no need to go into more details there), and is VERY VERY contagious.

I learned all of these things at 1:00 AM on a Sunday. It was overwhelming, and very disconcerting to everyone in the house as we scrambled to research and to find an open pharmacy in town. And all the while, my poor niece was in pain. Pin worms are at their most active at night, which is what caused her to wake up screaming. 🙁

Walgreens To The Rescue

In the midst of all of that turmoil, I didn’t think to go to my Walgreens app and go to the pharmacy chat. I wish I had, as you can reach a pharmacist 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, totally free of charge. It is such a fantastic service!

Once I cleared my head a bit about the whole endeavor (and bleached and otherwise disinfected pretty much every surface in my home), I started to wonder if my kids needed to take the same medicine that my niece was taking, just as a preventative measure. And that’s when I remembered the pharmacy chat and hopped on my phone. I was counseled not to give the medicine to my kids unless it became clear that they had also contracted the pin worms. I was very grateful for the advice! And FYI, it’s been about 4 weeks now, and we have no sign of pin worms, so I think we’re in the clear! 🙂

Family Prescription Management At Your Fingertips

Have you downloaded the Walgreens app, yet? It is such a great (and FREE) way to manage prescription information (and talk to pharmacists, because hey, you never know when your house will be afflicted with pin worms…). Additionally, Walgreens offers a complete family prescription management service online, where you can keep up with your immunization history, transfer prescriptions, print your prescriptions records and get refill reminders. If you are keeping up with prescriptions for your family members in your head, hand it over to Walgreens and let them take care of it for you

At the Corner of Happy and Healthy

Between the app and the online offerings, Walgreens really goes the distance to help you keep your family and your medical and health needs on track. But I still like head to the brick and mortar store to do a little shopping (it’s actually one of my favorite places to go, either for a quick milk run or to get to do a little kid-free browsing!). Just last week I popped over to get some  Vitamin D, because I’ve been reading about the benefits of this supplement to promoting healthy teeth (possible post in the works on that topic!). I was planning to just pick up whatever they had on hand, and was delighted to see this:

Walgreens is NOT afraid of a good sale, and that’s just one more reason why I love to shop there. I was hoping to find some Vitamin D supplements for maybe 20 or 25% off, but I got them almost 50% off…no coupon, no hassle! LOVE IT!!!

And now, in addition to helping me keep track of my family’s medical information with ease, Walgreens is also helping me keep my pearly whites in good working order. Yes, indeed, you can find me at the corner of Happy and Healthy!

How do you keep up with your family’s medical information? Have you tried the Walgreens app?

Walgreens Vaccine #GiveAShot Program Is Awesome!

Have you ever had the flu? I had it once when I was 11 or 12 (kept me out of school for a week!), and then I had it once again last year.

IT. IS. HORRIBLE. I have been getting my flu vaccine every year for about 10 years now, including last year. And no, I’m not giving up on flu shots just because I wasn’t protected from the particular strain that came my way last year. I believe that the immunization has kept me well every single year, and that it DID effectively keep me from suffering from other strains of the flu. Even though I had some bad luck last year, I’m totally a believer! Especially now, when there’s absolutely no good time for mom to get sick. Our whole world was turned upside-down for about 3 days last year while I slept day in and day out.

My girls also came down with the flu last year, just 6 days after receiving their vaccines. I got them to the doctor for their vaccines later than I planned, and there ya go…they got exposed to the flu before their shots had a proper chance to protect them. My youngest was just 6 months old when she got the flu.

Can you imagine my guilt level? Pretty darn high!

Convenience

So why did I wait so long (I waited until the very end of November). Honestly, the answer is convenience. Their pediatrician is a 25 minute drive away. My doctor is 20 minutes, and I might well have waited that long to get my own, even though I really believe in them, had it not been for the convenience of Walgreens.

Walgreens offers adult vaccines at many of their stores during pharmacy hours, with no appointment needed. Most health insurance plans are accepted. Additionally, you get 500 points on your Balance Rewards card when you get an immunization. There are many great reasons to head to Walgreens for your immunization needs. And while they most definitely offer the flu vaccine (very important this time of year), they also have the HPC vaccine, HPV, Hepatitis vaccine (and Hepatitis b), shingles vaccine, and travel immunizations.

But the most awesome reason I want to highlight has to do with getting two shots for the price of one. No, I’m not suggesting that you get a flu shot in both arms this year. But rather, that you take advantage of the Give A Shot program and Walgreens running now through  October 14 in partnership with the United Nation’s Foundation’s Shot@Life campaign. Walgreens is ready to donate up to 3 million vaccines to children in high need areas all over the world, and by getting a vaccine for yourself, you’ll also be giving a life-saving vaccine to a child who needs it!

All you have to do to potentially save the life of someone else is walk into your nearest Walgreens and get an immunization that can help you out in some way, as well. You don’t even have to make an appointment! Make it a point to find yourself in a place like this sometime this week, ok? It’s a life-changing decision!
