Have you noticed that it is rare to get an actual fortune from a fortune cookie these days? I find that it is very unusual for me to be told that good luck is on the horizon, or to be wary of new friends, or anything like that. What I get much more often are proverbs (for example, good friends are worth their weight in gold). Maybe they are interesting, but they aren’t fortunes! I’m also noticing that getting a funny fortune cookie is more common. And I don’t mean “funny” ha ha. I mean “funny” WEIRD.
The other day, we got takeout Chinese food, and my “fortune” was not only a proverb, but also an incomplete proverb. It read, “Behind an able man, there are always.”
Read it again.
“Behind an able man, there are always.”
That’s it!
Does it mean that feminine hygiene products are behind an able man? That’s all I can think of….
It turns out that it is an actual Chinese proverb, and there is a correct ending, but it is boring, so I’m not going to tell you what it is. Can you think of a way to end this proverb? Let’s hear it! Also, if you’ve ever received an especially strange or funny fortune, I’d like to hear it, too!
