I’m a pretty simple cook. I like recipes that get me in and out of the kitchen quickly and that provide a lot in the way of taste. I’ve learned over the past 9 1/2 years that I’ve been cooking that there are some ingredients you can go frugal with, and there are other ingredients where you get exactly what you pay for, and bumping up the quality a bit can make an ENORMOUS difference in just how good your dishes actually taste.
One ingredient I had not considered upgrading until recently was mustard. I had the opportunity to try out Colman’s mustard recently. This product originates in England, and has been around since 1814. In 1866 it actually received a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria, and that made it official: this was the best mustard in the country! It continues to be the best of the best overseas, and lucky for you, it can also be found in American grocery stores now!
I’ve been using both the prepared mustard and the mustard powder for dishes that call for it. The prepared mustard definitely has a spicy kick. It makes regular yellow mustard seem like SUCH a joke! You only need a small amount to take your sandwiches from tasting just fine to tasting out of this world. I have been extremely impressed, and I don’t think I’ll ever buy the other stuff again, honestly!
I’ve also been enjoying putting together a quick homemade honey mustard dressing (no point in me buying a whole bottle of dressing, as I’m the only one in the house who uses it!). Additionally, I tried the meatloaf recipe from the Colman’s site that called for a bit of mustard powder, and I LOVED the flavor it added to the dish. I’ll definitely keep incorporating mustard powder in my meatloaf recipes down the line.
Perhaps the best news of all is that getting this top-of-the-line mustard isn’t going to break the bank, as some high-end products tend to do. The prepared mustard retails for $3.99 for the prepared mustard and $5.99 for the mustard powder. You can find your nearest retailer here or purchase from Amazon.com.

Howdy, folks! I didn’t come for the sweepstakes, but to kick in my two cents on Colman’s Dry Mustard. I am a fan of mustard, ever since I was a kid with baloney and cheese sandwiches. That, for me, has always been French’s Yellow. It’s tasty and has that nostalgic air to it, so it will always be in my fridge. Thing is, that has led me to different kinds of mustard, and how they differ, and THAT led me to Colman’s. The directions on the side say to mix equal parts cold water and dry mustard, so it’s obviously easy. Patti Hess above mentioned soft pretzels above and that’s exactly how I did my first taste test. Thing is, there are plenty of other cold liquids you can mix it with, so by all means, experiment. I tried beer and white vinegar, and water. The differences were subtle (exception, vinegar), but all were equally good.
Now, this isn’t French’s, by any means. This is HOT, and will leave you with sweat on your brow and cheeks, unless you’re a woman, and that would be glistening, not sweat, heheh. Personally right up my mustard alley. I wouldn’t liken it to any prepared mustard I’ve tried, though there may be one or two out there. If you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend doing so if you’re a mustard maniac like me. I’m sure there are ways to soften the heat if you’re so inclined, or to emulate such things as Dijon, French’s, etc, but I’ve not yet delved into such experimentation. I’m sure sweetening it a little would soften the edge, but before you do that, try it straight, just like on the side of the tin. You won’t be disappointed. I have a 4oz tin, but it does come in a 2 ounce version, so you’re not wasting too much money if it isn’t your cup of tea. That’s an English reference, heheh.
Give it a shot.
