Natural Hair Conditioning Treatments: My DIY Approach

September 28, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

For the past few weeks I’ve been using a natural hair conditioning treatment and I have been really pleased with the results. In fact, just yesterday I received a compliment on my hair from a complete stranger, and this sort of thing just NEVER HAPPENS in my life anymore. As in…I cannot for the life of me remember the last time a stranger paid me a compliment. So it was kind of a really big deal. 🙂

I put together this recipe while searching online for the best hair conditioning treatment. I had some particulars that I was seeking:

  1. I didn’t want it to be terribly expensive
  2. I didn’t want it to have to sit in my hair for some length of time and then be washed out (who has time for that?!)
  3. I wanted it to be natural, so no nasty chemical stuff, please.
  4. I wanted my hair to look and feel better with use. Otherwise, why bother?

So here’s where I landed. I hope you give it (or some variation of it) a try and let me know how it goes!

I start out with organic argan oil (I use this brand and love it…it’s a reasonable price for how long it will last you). I use two full pumps just after showering on my thick, full hair that comes down a few inches past my shoulder (my hair is long but on the short side of long….make sense?). Argan oil is an excellent natural moisturizer for hair and it leaves great shine but not a greasy look or feel. But I don’t just use argan oil and call it a day. I add some key essential oils to really ramp up the benefits.

For each essential oil mentioned, I’ve added 4 total drops to the entire bottle. That’s it! A little goes a long with with essential oils, especially when you use the good stuff (I swear by Young Living).  essential-oils-for-healthy-hair

So here’s what I add and why:

  • lemongrass (strengthens hair follicles)
  • rosemary (stimulates hair growth, can slow graying)
  • peppermint (promotes a healthy scalp, uplifiting scent is great for morning showers)
  • tea tree (fights off fungus that can lead to dandruff, moisturizes the scalp, lice are repelled by it)
  • cedarwood (promotes hair growth, promotes hair thickness)
  • ylang ylang (strengthens hair follicles, moisturizes, reduces hair loss)

Overall, it’s a very simply DIY hair conditioning treatment that I use after every shampoo (and often in place of my conditioner). I tried the argan oil by itself but since I already use essential oils and know that they can be great for the hair, I decided to add them into the mix and my results have been really positive. My frizzies are very much under control and my hair has great shine and manageability.

If you are new to the world of essential oils and need some help getting your hands on the really good stuff (oh heck yes, there is a HUGE difference in quality from brand to brand) feel free to reach out to me, as I place an order with Young Living once a month and I’d be happy to pick something up for you (you have to have a membership to YL to get wholesale pricing, or you can sign up yourself as a retail customer, but you will pay 24% more). If you were just going to try one oil, ylang ylang would be my very top pick, but go for what sounds the most helpful based on your particular needs.
