Extending the Life of Your Razor: Tim’s Top Mens Shaving Tips

July 18, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

I recently learned that Tim changes his razor blade about four times a year (!?!?!?). I noticed this because I’m the one who always picks up razors for us. Since I’ve been getting back into couponing, I’ve been getting $10 razors for about $1.50. I’ve created a stockpile, so I wasn’t surprised to see that he had a surplus when I checked my inventory. I was, however, surprised to see that he still hadn’t opened razors that I bought for him a year ago.

When I asked him how this was even possible, he told me about two important things that he does to greatly extend the life of his razor. He was actually rather proud of these discoveries he made.

Tip #1
Keep a washcloth by your razor. Pat your razor dry after every use on the washcloth, and even rest the razor on top of the washcloth to catch any excess moisture. Keeping your razor as dry as possible goes a long way toward extending the life of the blade (guess that’s why my razors, which stay in the shower, are toast after 2 weeks…).

Tip #2
Sharpen your blade on your forearm. Are you confused by that one? Yeah, me too. This is a very interesting trick, but it is one you need to watch in action so that you don’t go hurting yourself while attempting to do this. This is the video Tim watched to learn how this works.

I’m not sure how this guy kept his blade for 22 months, and Tim is not getting the same results, but he is stretching his blade use out to just over 3 months per cartridge by using this technique along with drying out his blade.

I think Tim’s tips are really interesting. I don’t think I can successfully keep my own blade dry, but I will try this sharpening technique to see if that can help me squeeze a few more weeks out of my blades.

What about you? Do you have any neat tricks to share to extend the life of your razors? Or do you have any cool products that you use and love for hair removal? Do tell!
