The Fridge That Stole My Heart (and Other Great Samsung Finds at Best Buy)

Are you baking, yet, friends??? We have started on a few “spooky” cookies and I’ve got my cookbooks in a pile (and my Pinterest boards on alert!) for finding other fun holiday treats, as well as some new yummy main dishes and sides for upcoming potlucks and family gatherings. This, my friends, is the time of year when I start to daydream about having this kitchen:

Now I’m a big fan of waffles, myself, but they couldn’t distract me from the real gems in this shot: those gorgous Samsung appliances! I already have the pleasure of owning a Samsung stove, which I like very much, indeed, but I wouldn’t mind trading it in for the Samsung Flex Duo range with two separate ovens. Six sets of crisper drawers (one set perfect for keeping your meat separated from your other food)? Yes, please!!!! And get this, the bottom-right door can convert from a fridge to a freezer in a touch of a button so that it can accomodate your particular needs. WHAT?!?!?! Mind= BLOWN. You’ll also find a Power Cool and a Power Freeze section that can help you chill your favorite drinks or firm up ice cream in 10 minutes.

I can’t even with this fridge, y’all. I need it rightthisveryminutepleaseandthankyou.

The Home of the Future is the Home of Today: Connected Devices and Colorful Hues

That’s the number of devices in our home that make use of a wireless signal. While we aren’t officially one of those “homes of the future” there is no doubt that our home is deeply connectd to technology, and that number of devices that we have that make use of the internet or of remote control functioning by way of apps is only going to increase. Heck, by February I am going to have laundry detergent that has a wifi connection. True story! I know!

Maybe my number sounds high to you, but I want to encourage you to take moment to count your own devices, from your phones, to your computers and tablet, and even to your television (especially if you have Sling or something similar connected). How about your thermostat (we love being able to control our temps while we are out of town!)?

And what, dear friend, about your lighting? Most of you are probably confused about the lighting thing. How is it possile to connect your lightbulbs to an app?

Let me show you!

Check out the Philips hue A19 Starter Kit and the Philips hue Go, both available at Best Buy. These bulbs and accessory lights work with your Wi-Fi to let you create a customized ambiance in your home. From Halloween night to a lazy Saturday afternoon, just think about the fun possibilities for how you can light your home! We have been using our special lighting on a timer to help us wake up to a simulated sunrise effect, and I’ve been playing around with lighting that can help me feel more relaxed at the end of the day.

On a more practical note, because your lighting is connected to your Wi-Fi, you can control it remotely. This means you can alter the lights in your home when you are away on vacation to give the appearance that someone is, in fact, at home.

I’ve also been making great use of the portable Philips hue Go by using it to create just the right lighting for pictures and videos. It is such an easy way to add the light you might need when you are trying to capture a moment but you can tell that it’s going to turn out too dark (something we struggle with in our home, which doesn’t have a lot of natural light). The hue Go can be plugged in, or you can make use of its rechargeable battery (up to 3 hours) and truly take it anywhere.

When you find a mood that you especially love, you can save these custome creations and you can even take a photo that you love and use it as a palette for your lighting. How awesome is that?! And since you will want different lighting at different times of the day based on your schedule, you can create a program so that you can experience all those wonderful moments with just the right lighting, from waking up in the morning, to walking through the door at the end of your work day to preparing for bed. Or if your kids ask to throw a My Little Pony Pinkie Pie party RIGHT NOW, you will know exactly what to do.

My husband, in particular, has had such a blast playing with the lighting capabilities that the Philips hue products can offer. I would very highly recommend this for that special person on your holiday shopping list who loves technology.

This year I’ve got one in pre-school and one in first grade. That means that the amount of art coming home is about to EXPLODE. But mama’s got a plan. We’re going to be photographing it and then storing it all on a SanDisk memory card, which takes up pretty much no space at all. #WINNING!

SanDisk, which you can find at Best Buy, has a wide range of products that can fit your data storage needs. You can easily capture and transfer documents, as well as photos and videos (even HD!). Transfer speeds go up to 60MB/s for smartphones, tablets and action cameras. This makes them 10x faster than ordinary cards! If you are like me and are constantly snapping photos on your phone, make sure it can keep up with you and that you don’t get the dreaded “no more space” message again and again. We walked into the store thinking we’d stick with the brand we have known and loved, but then we realized that the Apple products couldn’t make use of a micro USB, and that the storage capacity we’d want would mean that the iPad would run us $600. That’s when we decided to look a bit more carefully at some of the android options. And friends, we found one that for all intents and purposes offered the same quality as the iPad, and with the addition of a $39 SanDisk micro USB, we could match the memory of the iPad. Our total cost? $239. BAM! SanDisk saves the day!

Remember, friends, a lack of storage space doesn’t always mean that you need to upgrade your device. SanDisk might be able to get you plenty of extra mileage. Or it might be able to save you lots of space on your fridge for those lovely works of art, too! 🙂

Best Buy Gift Idea Lists and Wish List Maker!

I have got gifts on the brain BIG TIME right now. My husband’s birthday was 3 weeks ago (and he STILL doesn’t know what he wants for his present!), my oldest daughter had a birthday over the weekend, and my birthday is just a few weeks away.

Also, August is the month when I do a present inventory for Christmas. I have 28 people on my Christmas gift list, with the majority of those people being adorable nieces and nephews, so it takes some rather intense organization to get all of their gifts together and not be absolutely losing my mind in December. I’ve conducted my inventory now so I know exactly where my gift “holes” are and the price point I’m looking to spend in each case.

And by the way, the men have nothing. They always have nothing. Why are they so tough?!?!

One of my go-to spots for birthday or Christmas gifts for the men on my list is Best Buy. I’m never starting from scratch when I head to the Best Buy website because they have gift ideas based on the interests of the person you are buying for and your budget. LOVE that feature! I don’t know about the men in your life, but the men in my life, 9 times out of 10, say, “I don’t know” when I ask them what gift ideas they could give me. Best Buy NEVER has that answer, thankfully!

I’m going to have my husband create one immeiately because he is notorious for randomly thinking of cool tech gifts that he wants, TELLING NOBODY, and then forgetting his idea. Now he can just add that cool item to his wish list and I can refer to it any time!

The wish list can also really help families and friends pool resources. If you notice that your teenage nephew, for example, wants an iPad REALLY bad for his birthday, instead of everyone buying him $30 presents, put it all together to get him the one thing he really wants! I start Christmas shopping for Tim before I start shopping for anyone else, simply because he is the hardest person to buy for out of my group of 21 people. Yes, my own husband stumps me more than anyone else!

One of the places where I shop for Tim is Best Buy because I have noticed over the past 12 years of our marriage that gifts I get him from this particular store are significantly less likely to be returned by him for a refund. Simply put, Best Buy has a lot of stuff that he actually likes and wants.

LG OLED TV

If you have ventured into Best Buy recently, you may have experienced the LG OLED TV. And really and truly, it is an experience. Televisions have certainly come a long way in the last 15 years, but I’ve never seen anything quite like this!

But I can’t even imagine what Tim would do if he found this under the tree for him on Christmas morning. He would be speechless! Best Buy Unveils the Dyson DC59 Cordless Vacuum (And Why I’m in Love with It!)

Let me paint a picture for you, friends. We live in a SMALL home (1329 square feet, to be exact). And the central hub of our house is one smallish room that contains the kitchen, living room and dining room all together. Our vacuum is out all the time because we have a toddler and a preschooler. Things get REALLY messy, REALLY fast.

I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I have tripped over the cords and the hose of our vacuum. But putting it back in the closet is a futile endeavor because we are just going to have to vacuum again the next day.

And then I heard the news. The TOTALLY AWESOME NEWS. Dyson was coming out with a cordless vacuum that had all the power of a full-size upright vacuum.

Cue the angels!!!

Best Buy recently heard of my vacuum cord woes, and sent me the Dyson DC59 to put to the test in my small yet remarkably crumb-filled home, and I want to share with you our experience.

Here’s what I have discovered about this model:

It has a 26 minute cleaning time, which doesn’t make it the ideal choice if you plan to vacuum every room in your house all at once. This is NEVER a problem for me, as it is impossible for me to have more than one room at a time picked up enough for vacuuming! After I vacuum the room that is ready to be cleaned, I just pop it back into its pretty holder on the wall, and that is how it gets recharged. Easy peasy!

It has a re-engineered brush bar for hard floor AND carpet cleaning. It moves seamlessly from our hard floors in the dining room to the rug in the living room.
Is has 3 times the suction of any other cordless vacuum in use. The DysonDC59 using a V6 motor, and that gives it the ability to perform like an upright vacuum. Also of note: the motor spins 5 times faster than a Formula One racecar! Take that, dirt!
It weighs 4.65 lbs. It is a breeze to use, and this feature also makes it an attractive option for anyone who shouldn’t be lifting heavy objects for any reason. Or if you need to vacuum with a baby on your hip (been there, done that!).
It has 15 cyclones that work across 2 tiers to increase air flow and capture fine dust. I have certainly noticed that it picks up a great deal of fine dirt particles in my house, which is something my old vacuum seemed to blow right past.
Is has a hygienic one-touch emptying system (with buttons on both sides to accommodate folks who are left handed, as well as all of us righties). And just look at all the dirt it gets up with just a quick vacuum. Yuck!
It is SO easy and comfortable to use. The maneuverability of this machine is so amazing, friends. Now I understand why people love owning Dyson products. They are designed to make vacuuming easier and to get your home cleaner faster, and in my experience, they succeed mightily in those endeavors.

The Dyson DC59 is currently available for $499.00 at Best Buy. If you could really use a new vacuum and are ready to get a truly awesome one, you can’t go wrong with this model. Ditch the cords and get a Dyson!

On My Workout Wishlist: Wireless Earbuds

So we are almost 3 weeks into 2014, friends. I’m curious how many of you have goals and resolutions for the year that involve improving your health in some way? I certainly do, and I’ll be the first to tell you that I have struggled right out of the gate to address it. While I have been improving my breakfast habits, which is an area I wanted to work on, I haven’t yet made it to the gym.

Yikes.

I need to get motivated, and that means that I’m about to start firing up my FitBit again. When I used it last year, it kept me honest about how much I had been moving, and on days when it seems that I had been particularly sloth-like, it helped me to recognize it, and then get the family out the door for a walk. Time to get back in the habit!

I also want to have some great earbuds on hand for when I finally do make it over to the gym for a little one-on-one time on the treadmill. I absolutely WON’T do it without music! I think I have some earbuds around here, somewhere. Maybe? Tim is the one who uses them the most often. And our cat, Hattie, has chewed through her share of earbud wires, so some have been lost that way.

I think I just need to get an official pair for myself. And I’ve got my sights set on the yurbuds.

These are WIRELESS earbuds. The are Bluetooth compatible, andthey don’t plug into your device at all, which is awesome! No more having your plug rip out while you are jogging or doing some other form of exercise. I’ve had that happen to me multiple times on the treadmill, and it always causes me to stop what I’m doing, which kills the momentum! A few days ago I headed over to Best Buy on a very specific mission: I wanted to find the hottest tech gifts for people on my list who are really hard to shop for (that would be my husband, Tim). Best Buy was my tech gift center choice because I really like how their stores are organized, which makes it easy for folks like me who aren’t super tech-savvy to navigate the floor and find what they need. Additionally, there are employees in every section who have specialized knowledge of the products in those sections, and they do a great job of answering questions and showing you what you think you might be looking for, as well as a few alternatives that might also fit the bill.

Before I headed to the store, I checked out what cool gifts are currently trending as the most popular. While the top 10 list did have some fluctuation depending on when I checked it, I definitely noticed that a few different things stood out from the crowd. Let me show you the highlights!

Samsung Galaxy

So this seems to be a VERY hot ticket product line this holiday season! My Best Buy was offering a KILLER deal on a Samsung Galaxy S4 plus a Samsung Galaxy Tab plus your choice of another accessory. Just $309.98!!! I mean, seriously. I stood there for several minutes trying to figure out if I should go drop my iPhone in the toilet “accidentally.” I didn’t do it, but I’ve never considered it more seriously than I did in that moment, people! The Samsung Galaxy seems to be the smartest of the smartphones, and one that everyone is loving. So if you’ve got a little more to spend on your “hard to shop for” person and they are due for a phone upgrade, it doesn’t get any sweeter than this. And for the James Bond types out there, definitely check out that sweet Samsung Galaxy Tab watch. It is nuts!

Apple Products

Even though I debated ending the life of my iPhone, I can’t really hate on Apple, because their products are just so unbelievably amazing. For example, I have the first generation of the iPad, and I think it is fabulous (except for its inability to take photos). One of the helpful Best Buy employees snapped a shot of my shock as I picked up the newest iPad. It is so light! Priced at $499, it would make one showstopper of a Christmas gift under anyone’s tree! I know I’m supposed to be shopping for Tim here, but I can’t help but feel as though I need to start singing, “Santa baby, just slip an iPad Air under the tree, for me!”

Getting back on track and thinking about what my husband would like, I spotted (heck, how could I miss it?) the largest monitor in the store. Tim is a planner by profession, and he is often looking at and making maps. He needs a big screen to get his work done. This would be an absolutely mind-blowing gift for him, and if money were no object, it would have gone home with me on the spot. At $1,799, I had to take a pass on it, so if that’s within your budget, well then, there’s one available at the Best Buy in Chattanooga! Ha!

Ok, so for those of us with more “modest” budgets, you simply can’t go wrong with an iTunes gift card. They fit any budget and allow the recipient to have a HUGE range of options to use it on, from apps to movies and music, or if you are like me, moving up to the next level in Candy Crush. I’m so embarrassed that I just admitted that, so let’s move on!

Best “Bang for your Buck”

Y’all, forgive the crazy faces I make. What can I say? I get overly excited when I see a great deal! I was super impressed with the Windows Tablet that Best Buy currently has for $299. It detaches from the keyboard, so you can use it like a traditional laptop or like a tablet, and it comes with Windows Office. Let me tell you, this is not something I need, but it is most definitely something I want! And if we didn’t already have a Chromebook (purchased earlier this year at…wait for it…Best Buy!) I would have come home with this and put it under the tree for ~~myself~~ Tim.

If your loved one likes coffee, even just a little, then you can’t go wrong with a Keurig! My machine is one of my BFFs throughout the day, as it makes me cup after cup of perfectly perfect coffee. Best Buy even has a holiday K-cup package you can purchase to go along with it. I’ve already got the coffee maker, but I don’t have all those yummy holiday flavors! Jeez…I CAN’T stop shopping for myself!!!!

Stocking Stuffers

I thought these gloves were the perfect thing to go in Tim’s stocking this year. They’re actually perfect for anyone who has to live through a few cold months each year, and who is glued to their smartphone, as you can operate your devices without taking these gloves off!

I also picked up a pair of ear buds for Tim. He seems to lose track of his from time to time, and Best Buy had a fantastic selection at a variety of price points. These were under $15!
