Hands-On Prints Books: Bringing Montessori Home!

May 25, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Hands-on-Prints books. I received books to facilitate my review.

Are you concerned about your kiddos experiencing some brain drain over the summer? This is an issue I’ve been a bit worried about, personally, and it has impacted the types of activities I am going to make available. Of course my kids are going to have plenty of unstructured play time (that’s an important part of learning, after all!) but I’m also on the look out for reading materials that can help with skill development for my pre-reader and my early reader.

Today I want to highlight two books that are fantastic summer additions to my kids’ libraries!

My kids are in Montessori school, and one of the important learning activities that pre-readers do is to practice tracing the cursive letters while making the letter sounds. The focus isn’t on the name of the letter, but rather the sound that it typically makes. And by tracing the letter, you are using muscle memory. This is how learning, and not rote memorization, takes place.

I am really loving the book Around the World from A to Z. This book has the raised cursive letters on one side of each page for the child to enjoy tracing. The other side of the page has very vivid images from around the world. Real-world photographs would have been most ideal, in my opinion, but the drawings are very beautiful. The images show children all over the world engaged in various activities all over the world (for example: kayaking by the Golden Gate Bridge). So in addition to the pre-reading exercises, you are also getting some geography and some information about various physical sports and games.

My youngest has begins her first preschool year in Montessori school this fall. We will be tracing our letters over the summer and continuing to practice with it throughout the school year. When she outgrows the book, I will be donating it to the school!

The other book I’d recommend for little ones as they work on identifying emotions, as well as coping strategies for when things don’t go their way, is Do I have to? What if I don’t want to. Now this book is going to be just as helpful for me as it is for my kids. There are so many great points made just to the parents at the beginning of the book about how hard it is for a child to have so little control over how their day goes (when they wake up, where they go, what they eat, etc.) and that can get overwhelming, and also really frustrating! This book takes an empathetic approach to those difficulties and also helps start conversations between parents and their children so that they can help each other work through those hard moments.

Both of these titles are from Hands on Prints. Christina Cheung is the founder of Hands-on-Prints, and she began writing her books after establishing a Montessori school. The range of material offered on the website spans from the simple to the more complex, and incorporates tactile elements as well as a visually stimulating experience for children. Please take a moment to check out the website and see what might need to be added to your summer reading list!

What I’m Reading: Makers (The New Industrial Revolution)

October 13, 2014 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

I received a complimentary copy of this book  from Blogging for Books for review purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always. Affiliate links may be included.

My bachelor’s degree is in Urban Studies, which is an exciting combination of sociology, political science and history, all with an urban focus. The Industrial Revolution is pretty much the most exciting period there ever was to an Urban Studies nerd. I actually have a picture of myself at the factories in England where smelting first occurred. Smelting is the process of pulling metal from its ore. When folks figured out how to do this, the Industrial Revolution was birthed!

I was ecstatic to get to see it, y’all. NERD ALERT.

Chris Anderson, the former editor-in-Chief of Wired magazine, and the CEO of 3D Robotics, has a released a book called Makers, and it’s all about the next wave of the Industrial Revolution.

I believe my comments on Instagram sum up how I felt while reading this book:

The future is awesome. #makers

You have probably already heard about the concept of 3D printers, and how it won’t be long before we can basically start making things that we want or need in our own homes, and customize those things to our liking. This book is all about that revolution, and how it is likely going to impact commerce, competition, consumerism, and the whole freakin’ world. It’s 1 part scary and 2 parts absolutely AMAZING.

This is a dense read, simply because some level of detail is shared about how 3D printers work, but it is a very worthwhile read. Truly, it gives you a glimpse into where we are headed, and how the niche market is on the rise, and why that’s an excellent thing.

Get the book! I saw a used copy for under $4!

StinkyKids Plush Dolls and Books Review and GIVEAWAY!!!

August 23, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt ·

Julie is Darah’s new best friend. No, she hasn’t surpassed bunny and llama, but she is definitely in the high inner circle of plush toys. Julie is a super cute soft doll from the Madame Alexander line called StinkyKids. Darah makes Julie dance (her arms and legs move easily) and has tea parties with her often. I like Julie because she is safe enough for babies (no small parts that might detach), she is washable when the need arises, and she is so stinkin’ cute (no pun intended).

I was unfamiliar with this line of dolls until I was contacted for a review, and now I’m so glad to know about them. One of my favorite things about this line is that the characters can be found in two books, StinkyKids and the Runaway Scissors, which we had the chance to check out, and StinkyKids See a Full Moon, which will be available in September but can be pre-ordered now. Darah thought it was VERY cool to see her Julie on the pages of a storybook, and as a result, she plops down and listens to the story (it’s not long, but it is a bit longer than most other books she will listen to all the way through, so I know that having Julie in the story is a big deal to her). The motto of StinkyKids is, “Always be a leader of good,” and you can see that lesson coming through in the book.  The book that is currently out won the 2011 Silver Mom’s Choice Award for best children’s picture book, so I’m not the only one who thought it was a good read!

As it sometimes happens with any product that is sewn together, occasionally a problem occurs. Darah’s doll Julie seemed to have a faulty hem on her skirt, and after just 8 days was fraying considerably. I’m actually kind of glad that we had this experience with a StinkyKids item, because it gave me insight about the customer service this company provides. First, I learned that I received a sample doll, so the quality could vary slightly from what is available online. Second, I learned that of the 25,000 dolls that have been produced so far, this is the second reported problem. The sponsor told me that it is their policy to look into the defect and determine if there is a problem with manufacturing, and to make the mistake right by not only replacing the doll, but sending additional goodies from the store as an extra measure of goodwill. That really showed me that this company takes quality very seriously, and also takes customer satisfaction very seriously. So I can tell you with confidence that the odds are astronomical that anything will be wrong with a StinkyKids doll if you buy one, but if it is, you can rest assured that customer service will make it right and then some! Furthermore, Julie is very much loved by Darah, and a scraggly hem isn’t going to change that!

One other fabulous feature of StinkyKids is that a percentage of profits from each sale go to Books, Bears and Bonnets, Inc., a charity founded in honor of the aunt of the StinkyKids founder, who passed away from uterine cancer. It delivers gift boxes to children and adults fighting cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. This company takes the StinkyKids motto, “Always be a leader of good,” to heart!

Scholastic’s Goodnight Gorilla and I Stink Review and GIVEAWAY!!!

July 23, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 12 Comments

Scholastic Storybook Treasures has put out two new DVDs in the last month, and we are loving them!!!!

First up, Goodnight Gorilla. This book is so loved by so many children, including my own. In fact, the more I read it, the more I love it, too! It’s not very big on words, but the pictures tell such a vivid and delightful story. Scholastic NAILED THIS BOOK by bringing it to life. Most all of the little fun tidbits you pick up in the story are also found in the video. It even drew my attention to a few details I had not previously noticed!

And let me just tell you about Darah’s reaction. The first time we played Goodnight Gorilla for her on the TV, she talked and squealed the ENTIRE TIME. She alsready knew the story and it tickled her to see that mischievous gorilla moving about. To say this DVD is a hit would be a massive understatement.

Goodnight Gorilla could stand on its own and be completely worthy of purchase, but Scholastic has bundled it with 15 other delightful stories about animals, all in a 3 disc set that retails for $24.95.

The second DVD set is I’m Dirty and I Stink. This is a set of two DVDs, and the title videos are based on books I wasn’t familiar with until getting this set. They are about garbage trucks and are a lot of fun! Darah now runs around the house saying, “I stink!” which totally makes me laugh. The whole set has a lot of transportation-related stories. It’s just perfect for any child with a fascination for things with wheels. This set retails for $19.95. Also, get 20% off your purchase from now until August 31st by entering code NKFB20 at checkout (this is celebrating the launch of the Facebook page!).
