Jungle Gym by Justin Roberts; Capturing Childhood in Song

June 22, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · 62 Comments

I have had the privilege of listening to some really fun family music over the last 6 months. There are so many wonderful bands out there who are making albums for kids, but who also keep the parents who have to listen to them in mind. I have had a blast discovering new groups and new songs that I love, and that as Darah grows a little bit, will make her giggle.

justin roberts jungle gym Today I’m bringing you another album. Justin Roberts has just released his seventh album, called,Jungle Gym , and it captures the magic and wonder of childhood like nothing else I have heard.

Check out the playlist, and you’ll get a sense for the topics covered:
1. We go duck
2. Sleepoverland
3. Trick or Treat
4. Sign My Cast
5. Gym Class Parachute
6. Obsessed by Trucks
7. Cardboard Box
8. Snow Day
9. Never Getting Lost
10. New Haircut
11. Fire Drill
12. 2 x 4

The songs are so fun, and the sound is ever so slightly reminiscent of some classic Weezer, in my opinion. I’ve been rocking out to this cd a lot lately. It has brought back some of the excitement that I used to feel for things like snow days, playing with a cardboard box (the possibilities were ENDLESS!), and of course, the day that the parachute came out during p.e., which was hands-down my favorite day. I especially loved Never Getting Lost, which is such a sweet song about getting lost (and then found) at the mall. It is just so innocent, and it totally nails what a child feels when s/he get lost in a store, and what a relief you feel when your mom finds you. Now, of course, I can think about this scenario from the perspective of a mom, and I just cried the whole way through that song!

Buy It!: You can buy a copy for you and your children to enjoy today at Justin’s website for $15.00.  You can also snag it on Amazon for $11.99! I assure you that it is worth every penny.

Pinwheel, Pinwheel, Spinning Around (GIVEAWAY!!!)

June 21, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · 65 Comments

This giveaway is CLOSED.

There are so many fun things about being part of the blogging world. It is so much fun to get to know other wonderful moms and dads out there who are going through some of the same things my family is going through. It is really awesome to get to learn about the latest (and truly greatest) products from other parents who have taken them for test drives. AND…it is SO MUCH FUN to win something every once in a while! A while back I won a custom dress that was featured on Wee Share (you seriously should subscribe to this blog if you don’t already, by the way!). I won the Moo -la-la dress from Thread & Jam!

This dress is out of control crazy and awesome! It is honestly something I would have never picked out, but let me tell you, now that I have it, I am bonkers about it! The cows are precious, the design of the dress is fun, and I just can’t help but smile every time Darah wears it. It is so unbelievably cute, people! And even though this may seem silly of me, it is really REALLY fun to dress up your kid in something that can’t be bought at the local mall or at Target. Her moo-la-la dress can’t be bought anywhere (she actually got the very last one that Preetha, the owner of Thread & Jam, ever made).

Before you start to feel sad about not getting one of these dresses for your own little love, let me offer some comfort! Thread & Jam still has an awesome selection of dresses in fun, bold prints and patterns that are anything but ordinary. Two of my favorite dresses are the vibrant scallop tunic dress with bow and the lopsided swoosh neck dress! Preetha’s outfits are also very reasonably priced, with pretty much everything ranging from $15 to $38. That’s amazing for handmade clothes! Check out what Thread & Jam has to offer today, and pick out something extra special for your little one!

Win it!: In addition to making rockin’ skirts, dresses and jumpers, Preetha also makes these adorable pinwheels that can help you snazzify an outfit or a headband! They can be made from any fabric that you see in the shop. One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader is going to win a set! Hooray! The contest will run until July 2nd at 7:59pm CST when a winner will be selected using Random.org. The winner will be emailed and will have 48 hours to respond before the prize is forefited and a new winner is selected. Open to residents of the United States.

Twinkletoes Diapers: Discovering AI2 Diapers

June 19, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · 370 Comments

Bloggy friends, I am delighted to have the opportunity to introduce you to another fabulous mom who has developed a great business that helps her stay at home with her children. Meet Vanessa, the owner of Etsy shop Twinkletoes Diapers. Vanessa specializes in AI2 diapers, and she also has a nice variety of diaper covers for those of you who prefer fitted diapers.

AI2 from twinkletoes diapers Vanessa sent me the cutest AI2 diaper ever, because it is made from Supergirl fabric! When the diaper arrived, it came with really helpful instructions for prepping the diaper before its first use (for those of you who are new to cloth diapering, the vast majority of cloth diapers have to be washed anywhere from 1-8 times before they are fully absorbent, and the number of times depends on the material that is used). For Twinkletoes diapers, the liner only needed to be washed once, and the inserts need to be washed 4-6 times. I’m impatient, so I only washed them 4 times before I put them to use!

After reading over Vanessa’s instructions for prepping, usual washing and general use, I realized that this diaper offers something distinct from the other AIO diapers I use. The shell can be reused all day long, provided that the elastic isn’t soiled. You just unsnap the insert and wipe down the shell, and then snap in a clean insert and put it back on the baby. I think that’s really cool! Her diapers come with one insert, and you can purchase additional ones if you’d like to use the shell more than once before washing it. They are only $3.00. This is a terrific way to essentially turn one diaper into two or even 3 for very little extra money!

Twinkletoes diaper inserts are made with some really cool fabrics: bamboo fleece, suede cloth and ZORB…this fabric is new to me, but it rocks! Zorb soaks up wetness faster than any other material out there. I love it! I have found AI2 diapers to not be as effective for Darah during nap times, because she sleeps on her side and the inserts aren’t quite able to keep her dry at that particular angle. But during the day, they work like a charm and I would highly recommend them. If your baby sleeps on his/her back or tummy, I can’t imagine that you’ll have any leak problems during nap times with these diapers.

AI2 package from twinkletoes diapers Buy It!: If you are looking for a way to get a lot of bang for your buck when it comes to cloth diapers, without compromising the cuteness factor or the ease of use, Twinkle Toes diapers are the way to go! Check out what Vanessa has to offer, and purchase a few diapers and several inserts today! You’ll not only be getting some very nice diapers, but you’ll also be helping a mom live her dream!

Win It!: Twinkle Toes Diapers knows that once you try them out, you’ll come back for more. That’s why they are offering 1 lucky Stuff Parents Need reader the AI2 diaper of your choice from those listed! So generous!

The contest will run until June 29th at 7:59pm CST when a winner will be selected using Random.org. The winner will be emailed and will have 48 hours to respond before the prize is forfeited and a new winner is selected. Open to residents of the United States.

Mandatory Entry: Tell me which diaper you would choose, and choose wisely, as the winner will get what s/he selects in this entry!

BabyLegs Are the Perfect Choice for Crawling Babies

June 17, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · 235 Comments

baby darah in pink BabyLegs

I don’t think I’ve told you all that Darah is officially crawling. She started at the end of May, and true to what everyone says, once they are crawling, you have to step up your game even more. She gets faster every day, and she has a keen eye for small things on the floor. It is amazing how quickly she can locate them and get them into her mouth!

We have area rugs down in some of our rooms, but the vast majority of our floor space is just hard wood. While this is pretty to look at, it is not very much fun to crawl on, I’m afraid. Fortunately, we have several pair of BabyLegs and those are doing a nice job of keeping her knees from getting sore!

Most of you probably already know what BabyLegs are, but if you don’t, I’m excited to have the chance to tell you. They are awesome! Since you may want a little more info beyond, “they are awesome!,” though, I’ll elaborate further. By telling you how BabyLegs got started, you’ll quickly realize what they are. This is another amazing company that is the brainchild of a clever mom! From their site, “In April of 2005, Nicole Donnelly was a mom in a bind. Her daughter had a diaper rash that just wouldn’t quit and she needed some diaper-free time. Wanting to keep her daughter warm, Nicole snipped the feet off of a pair of socks and fitted her daughter from hip to ankle with the coolest set of leg warmers. These leg warmers not only kept her daughter warm, but also protected her from the elements, made diaper changing and potty training easier, and protected her soft knees while crawling. With some fun designs and some grassroots marketing support, the functional and fashionable leg warmers that began as a solution to keep little legs warm quickly became much more.”

babylegs In my experience, BabyLegs are the perfect alternative to pants when your baby is learning how to crawl. They offer the best options for range of motion while still providing some sort of coverage. I also LOVE LOVE LOVE how easy it is to change a diaper when Darah is in her BabyLegs. All I have to do is unsnap her onesie and then re-snap it when I’m done. Since she has discovered how to move herself around, she now tries to crawl away even during diaper changes, so the faster I can get her in and out of the diaper changing pit before she zooms back off, the better!

I love the patterns and colors that BabyLegs offers…there are so many wonderful ways to turn any outfit into something unique and fun. A few of the leg warmers on my wish list for Darah are the ones in yellow, popcicle and for the fall, maple!

Here’s a cool use for BabyLegs legwarmers that you may not be aware of. Did you know that you can use the baby legs as a way to add long sleeves to a shirt? I think this is a genius idea! Darah will likely have several short sleeve shirts that she’ll be able to use well into fall thanks to BabyLegs! You can also use BabyLegs legwarmers under a dress or skirt. Check out some of the ways that people have put BabyLegs to use well into the toddler years, too!

While I’ve known for a while that Baby Legs is the original provider of leggings for tots, what I didn’t’ realize until recently is that they also carry baby socks and girls’ tights! In addition to the precious Duchess BabyLegs I was sent, we also received the Sugar Cookie footless tights and the Tropical Paradise socks. I love that their tights are made with some extra room to accommodate diapers (even cloth diapers!). The socks are also just too cute, and now that Darah’s crawling and wanting to practice walking, we are once again trying to get her used to socks. She has so few pair right now because in the past she has refused to wear them. But now we’ve got a beautiful pair to try. Thanks, BabyLegs!

Buy it!: BabyLegs can be purchased online, or you can search for a retailer near you! Once you try them, you and your baby will be hooked! If you aren’t already tempted enough to make a purchase, BabyLegs is sweetening the deal for you, and offering you 20% off your purchase through June 30th! Just use code BlogSParentsNeed at checkout!

Edit: This giveaway is CLOSED!

Win it!: BabyLegs is offering up a grab bag of BabyLegs products to one VERY lucky Stuff Parents Need reader! EEEEE! The contest will run until June 27th at 7:59pm CST when a winner will be selected using Random.org. The winner will be emailed and will have 48 hours to respond before the prize is forfeited and a new winner is selected. Open to residents of the United States.

Mandatory entry: “Like” BabyLegs on Facebook, follow BabyLegs on Twitter OR join the BabyLegs forum (you are allowed to do all 3 but you must do at least one for your entry!). Let me know which one you did!

Woah! $80 CSN Stores GIVEAWAY!!!

June 16, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · 506 Comments

Edit: This giveaway is CLOSED

Do you ever get really obsessed with one particular thing that you want to improve in our house? I do from time to time, and I find myself spending hours searching the web for solutions to whatever problem we might be having with our house (sometimes the problem is real, and sometimes calling it a “problem” all just depends on your perspective).

One thing that recently caught my attention (and not in a good way) is a light that we have in our inside entryway. It looks like a lamp post, and to me, it is strange to put something that looks like a lamp post inside (maybe I’m in the minority on this one? Thoughts?). Anyway, I did stumble upon some really beautiful (and much more appropriate-looking) wall sconces, and you’ll never guess where I found them…through CSN Stores, the online shopping mega-store (home of over 200 different online stores, remember?!). They have an entire site just for lighting! I think my favorite is this one, which is simple, but updated.

Now that I’ve told you what is on my current wish-list, I want to hear what is on yours! Maybe you are looking for some new lighting for your home, too? Or what about lighting for the outside of your home (they have a store for that, too!). Or maybe you aren’t too concerned about the state of your home right now, but sure would love some new summer shoes. I bet whatever it is, you can find it through one of CSN’s stores, for sure!

Win it!: CSN Stores are amazing, and so are the people who run them. They are giving one of you the chance to snag something that you’ve been wanting for a long time! One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader is going to win an $80 gift certificate to CSN Stores! Holy Smokes! The contest will run until June 26th at 7:59pm CST when a winner will be selected using Random.org. The winner will be emailed and will have 48 hours to respond before the prize is forfeited and a new winner will be drawn. Open to residents of the United States or Canada!

Mandatory Entry: Two things: 1. Submit a link to an item from any CSN store that you’d like to purchase with your gift certificate if you won and 2. You must subscribe to my blog via email, RSS or Google Friend connect (let me know which one in your entry).

Additional entries:

1. Follow CSN Stores on Twitter

2. Follow Stuff Parents Need on Twitter

3. “Like” CSN Stores on Facebook

4. “Like” Stuff Parents Need on Facebook

Baby/Toddler Mealtime Makeover (GIVEAWAY!!!)

June 15, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · 145 Comments

Feeding Darah is so much fun. She has hit that age where there are very few things that she cannot try. We have been lucky so far to not run into any allergy problems, so almost every day brings some new food to try. And she certainly does like to try several different things. Gone are the days when she would happily eat just one thing for dinner. I’ve pretty much always fed her more than one thing at a time, but I used to just mix up her food cubes together to make one pile of mush. I know, that’s kind of gross, but she used to happily eat it.

Notice that I said, “USED TO.” This is no longer acceptable. She wants to taste different flavors individually. I can’t really say that I blame her, but I’m challenged to provide this for her for one main reason. I don’t have a plate or bowl with different compartments for different foods that is BPA free. So I have no easy way to get her food heated up in the microwave unless I use multiple bowls at each meal (which I am not cool with doing).

If you read my posts, then you know by now that when I encounter a problem like this, I go looking for the mom in the world who has already solved it. And I found her! Blog friends, allow me to introduce Liz, and her super useful product, the Baby Banquet.

The Baby Banquet is a super cool portable feeding system for infants and toddlers. It comes with a removable tray that can be safely microwaved (because it is BPA free!). Now this is without a doubt my “go-to” feeding system for Darah. Poor Tim is constantly having to wash it! I send it with her to daycare so that she can have a really nice lunch. I can also pack a snack underneath the sectioned tray. This is a great feature, because in the past I’ve just sent a container of those puffs with her, and even though I had her name on it, her caretakers couldn’t remember that it was hers and they just fed the snacks to all the kids. I’m all about sharing, but her whole container was empty after a week, and I’m not really even sure if she got any of them since bringing snacks for her is sort of a new thing. Now I can pack away just enough for her, for the day. Perfect!

This is also a terrific tool when you are traveling with babies and toddlers. Each of the sections is sized so that it can hold a baby food jar, and of course it can hold lots of other things, too. The bottom section can hold string cheese, goldfish, granola bars, juice packs, or most anything else that your little munchkin munches on!

The Baby Banquet has honestly made mealtime easier for Darah and her parents. Thank you so much, Liz and Baby Banquet!

Buy It!: The Baby Banquet is available for purchase on the Baby Banquet website (and listen up, Target and Babies R Us, this is something you need to start selling!) for $14.99.

Edit: This giveaway is CLOSED

Win It!: Liz wants to give one lucky Stuff Parents Need reader a baby or toddler mealtime makeover by giving away a Baby Banquet in your choice of blue or pink! The contest will run until June 25th at 7:59pm CST when a winner will be selected using Random.org. The winner will be emailed and will have 48 hours to respond before the prize is forfeited and a new winner is selected. Open to residents of the United States.

Mandatory Entry:

Tell me your color preference for the Baby Banquet (blue or pink) AND one thing you would put in it for the child in your life!.

Additional Entries:
1. Subscribe to my blog via RSS, email or Google friend connect (only one extra entry, even if you subscribe more than one way)
2. Follow Stuff Parents Need on Twitter (leave your Twitter ID)

How to Make Soda

June 13, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · 429 Comments

I used to drink soda A LOT. As in, several a day. Thankfully, I weaned myself off of that bad habit, and learned to drink a lot more water (ok, and iced coffee). But I still really enjoy having a nice cold soda a few times each week. I think because I don’t drink them constantly I enjoy the flavor so much more now whenever I have one!

Given the fact that I only imbibe in a carbonated beverage a few times each week, buying 2 liters of soda are ALWAYS a waste of money in my house. We only get about halfway through the bottle before it is F-L-A-T. I don’t like to crowd my pantry with 12 packs of soda, either. They take up a lot of room, and I find that if they are there, I’m more likely to reach for one often. Finally, paying the premium prices for those 20 ounce bottles is more than I can stomach. Given our soda habits and preferences, its actually a little bit tricky to get soda!

How to Make Soda

But, my friends, now we have such a cool and fun way to have just the right amount of soda whenever the mood strikes. Have you heard of SodaStream? It’s a company that creates products for making soda at home. I already know what you are thinking: There’s NO WAY that can be worth the pain in the rear that it must be to make your own, and there’s NO WAY that whatever you make will taste decent. I had my own suspicions, believe you me. But check out my video where you’ll see me make soda for the very first time ever and see for yourself! [Read more…]

Stella and Dot Jewelry Offers Celebrity Style

June 11, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · 80 Comments

I was recently contacted by a fabulous woman named Courtney who has her own business as a rep for Stella & Dot jewelry. I’ve heard of Stella and Dot before, largely due to its popularity with celebrities, but I never paid too much attention to it, assuming that their prices would be beyond outrageous (I mean, anything that Paris Hilton sports on a regular basis has got to be ridiculously pricey, right?). Well, I’m pleased to report that Stella and Dot offers beautiful and fashion-forward pieces for a variety of budgets!

turquoise earrings from stella and dot For example, Courtney sent me two pieces to review that are sensibly priced. First, check out the Turquoise Sea Drop Earrings. They are simple, yet bold, and they are absolutely perfect for the summer months! They are also an affordable $29.00. They are not too lightweight (sometimes earrings can be so lightweight and you KNOW they are made of really cheap material). But they also don’t drag down your ear lobes!

While Stella and Dot does have some jewelry that I can’t really afford (but would love to own….hello there, Colette necklace), I also saw several things that I wouldn’t feel bad about requesting for my birthday in a few months (like the smoky drop earrings or the teardrop scroll earrings, both priced under $30!).

child's bracelet from stella and dot Also, if there’s a girly girl in your home who likes to play dress up with mommy’s jewelry, Stella and Dot has recently launched a line just for little girls! While Darah is too young for her own jewelry (other than her earrings, of course), I’m really looking forward to giving her this cute Little Dottie Bracelet that Courtney sent to me once she gets bigger. It’s bright, looks well-made, and comes in the cutest little tin. It is gift-ready if you are looking for a present for a little girl. All of their children’s jewelry is inspected to ensure that it meet lead standards, as well.

Check out Stella and Dot if you haven’t before. Be sure to notice that you can shop by trend, which is especially helpful if there’s a particular look you are going for. Also, if you are looking for a really fun opportunity to start your own company, sell high-quality products and have a lot of fun in the process, contact Courtney at courthutton(at) gmail (dot) com to get more information about how to become a Stella & Dot stylist. She’d love to answer your questions and help you get started! Courtney shares the following about how she got started, “Even though I work a full time job, I longed for something more FUN and stylish than my ‘real job’, something that was truly my own. I wanted a business that I was proud of, and if I worked hard I could enjoy the rewards of my own effort. Like lots of people, I dreamt about being an entrepreneur, but didn’t know if I had the money to make it happen! When I discovered Stella & Dot, and realized how affordable it was to start a profitable and high potential business, I knew I could stop dreaming and start living! I didn’t need to open my own boutique and worry about leases, inventory, websites, and employees! I was thrilled that I could launch this business RIGHT AWAY and work it right alongside my current job! No risk at all.”

There are SO MANY beautiful pieces at Stella & Dot…it your wardrobe could use a little lift, get yourself some of the same accessories that are gracing all the magazine pages. When you shop through this link and put Tiffany as your hostess, you will get free shipping on any order! Woo hoo!

Country Chic Style from Shabby Apple

June 9, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · 254 Comments

garden country chic dress by Shabby Apple

Do you ever stumble upon a clothing line where every single piece makes you drool? More often than not, I only like a few pieces from any given collection each season. Shabby Apple is a company that is an exception to this rule for me, though. I love practically everything on their site!

The first thing you should know about Shabby Apple is that they specialize in dresses. I’m a dress gal, myself, and love to wear them to work and even out and about around town. They have such a fantastic selection of dresses; nothing like what you can find in a department store (and I mean that in a good way).

Have you ever noticed that dresses in stores seem to go one of two different routes: either they are hopelessly frumpy and age you by 15 years because the cut is the same boring thing that has been around for forever and flatters absolutely nobody, OR they are ridiculously skimpy and will only flatter a thin teenager who doesn’t yet have hips or breasts to speak of. In either case, the dress looks bad and it goes back on the hanger, where it belongs. This is what I often experience when I go dress shopping, which is why I don’t own very many dresses, even though I love to wear them.

Country Chic

But friends, feast your eyes on what Shabby Apple has to offer the woman who wants to look current but who doesn’t want all her assets hanging out of her clothes! I have SO MANY dresses that I am drooling over, but here are just a few: Conservatory Garden, Carnival, Jitterbug and Champs Elysees. While they aren’t as cheap as what you can find at Old Navy or Target, I think they are absolutely gorgeous for the price!

brown country chic dress offered by Shabby Apple I had the opportunity to try a Shabby Apple dress for myself in order to determine if the dresses are just as fabulous in person as they are online. They are, indeed! I was sent the Tuxedo dress, and I absolutely love its country chic style! It is beautiful chocolate brown, but it is linen, so it is perfect for the summer. But let me tell you, I’m already planning on wearing this well into the fall and breaking that antiquated “no linen after Labor Day” rule. There’s no way I’m going to follow that when I have a piece this gorgeous to wear. And of course, the brown color will be perfect for September and October (and where I live, the weather will still allow me to wear it in November, even!). The ruffles on the bodice are cute, but not “cutesy.” I feel as though I look my age (29) in this dress. I also feel as though I look quite put together! The A-line shape is very figure-flattering. I opted to wear it without a belt and it looked great, but I could see how wearing a belt, as it is pictured here, would also look really cute, especially for someone not quite as short as me.

If you are expecting, Shabby Apple carries a nice maternity line, as well! You and your baby bump will look amazing in Aphrodite, don’t you think? Also, if you have a little girl, be sure to check out their line for girls and for pre-teens. I am swooning over Queen of Hearts and Garden Party. Sizes for girls start at 12-18 months….the size that Darah is just about to grow into! Hooray!

Buy It!: Shabby Apple has something to offer every woman who is tired of looking either frumpy or unconvincingly half her age! Check out their great selection of country chic dresses, accessories and swimwear today!
