3 Tips for Vacationing with Small Children

February 4, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

If there is one area of life where the presence of children radically changes the experience, it has to be vacationing. I’m wondering if any of you feel the way I do about taking vacations with kids: THEY AREN’T VACATIONS FOR THE PARENTS!!!

Now, to be fair, we have only taken a few “vacations” that weren’t actually just trips to see family members. But on those few “just for fun” trips, we have learned some very important lessons that I’d love to share with you, just in case you are long overdue for relaxation time but leaving the kids behind just isn’t an option.

1. Set the bar low. I’m a complete type-A person, and I LOVE to create to do lists and schedules. I will plan a vacation itinerary in 15 minute increments if you give me the chance. But trust me, having a rigid schedule is a sure-fire way to be stressed out and disappointed if you have kids, because kids don’t care one bit about the agenda. If you are going to be staying somewhere for 5 days, for example, can I recommend that you choose 10 things that you most want to do/see/eat while you are there. And then cut that list in half. Then rank those 5. Sound crazy? Maybe, but it is the best way to make sure that the very most important things happen, and everything else is just a bonus. That mental shift can make all the difference between your vacation feeling like a lot of fun, and feeling like you didn’t get to do anything.

2. Think VERY carefully about your hotel choice. When we visited Atlanta last summer, we stayed in a super chic hotel in midtown. It seemed so posh and fun online, and we booked it probably imagining what vacations used to be like. But it took all of 5 minutes in that hotel with our young infant and our then 2 year old to realize that we were NOT in the right place. The furniture in the room was sleek and slightly uncomfortable, the hotel restaurant was a place you wouldn’t dare bring children because the death stares of other patrons would be sufficient to actually kill you. The pool was crowded with beautiful people in their 20s who were puzzled and most definitely not amused to see a toddler splashing about. And of course, there was no complimentary breakfast, which meant Tim and I had to scramble for 3 meals a day instead of just 2. If I had to do it over again, I would have picked a hotel room that had a kitchenette and I wouldn’t have been lured in by the swanky appeal. Let’s be real, this is not a “swanky” season of life we are in right now!

3. Travel abroad in a herd. Tim and I have been dreaming about a trip to Australia and New Zealand for years. We actually had tentative plans to go for our 10th wedding anniversary. Well, those plans were squelched when we realized that I’d be in labor right around that time (Layah was born 2 days before our anniversary!). When we think about traveling abroad again, whether it be to Australia or over to Europe to see Tim’s sister and her family, this much I know: we will do everything in our power to bring Tim’s parents with us. They are big travelers, and more importantly, they are really helpful. I haven’t yet had the pleasure of a long plane trip with little ones, but I have seen how moms and dads who brave it age years in just a matter of hours. We are going to need back up when we go. It takes a village to raise a child, and it takes a small herd to shuttle them all over the world and not lose your mind.

What about you? What have you learned about vacationing with small children? Any tips to make it actually feel a bit relaxing and not like really expensive work for the parents???

My Top Five Picks for Kid-Friendly Summer Fun Getaways

May 23, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 2 Comments

Do you remember how awesome summer was when you were a kid? No school, no homework, long days to play outside with friends, lots of slumber parties (even on weeknights!) and of course, family vacations.

My family wasn’t very big on taking major vacations, although we did often go to the beach and to water parks. The beach was only 2 hours from where I lived, so day trips were very doable. I do wish we had been able to do more in the way of vacations.

I think if you don’t plan ahead, the time just escapes you (and the funds, too!). Tim and I have made a list of 5 vacation experiences that we think Darah should get at some point in her childhood. Here they are, in no particular order.

1. Time at an amusement park of some sort. When my youth group would take trips to Six Flags over Georgia, I would always sign up to go, even if it meant that I had to sell candy at school as a fundraiser for months. I LOVE roller coasters and cheesy boat rides and even the live entertainment that they have at these places. I love water parks even more than places like Six Flags, and I will most definitely be taking Darah to Shipwreck Island in Panama City Beach when she is a bit older. The lazy river ride calls my name every single summer! And Disney World….I had been 6 times by the time I left for college! I really do have a “Disney fund” for Darah, and I put $25 into it every single month!

2. Camping/hiking. Ok, so I’ll admit that I’m not necessarily thrilled about this future vacation. I’ve NEVER camped overnight anywhere. I just don’t have the interest. But Tim’s family would do these kind of trips and do lots of hiking on them. He has some of his best memories of his family happened on hikes, and talks about how shared crisis really brings families together. I can see his point. This would most definitely be a bonding experience!

3. Time with family. I went on a few vacations as a child with one of my cousins, and I had a BLAST! Tim would go on a vacation with his cousins every single summer. Darah has so many cousins (all girls so far, but a little boy is on its way!), and I want them to know each other as they grow up, even though they don’t live near each other. Planning some vacation with family is the best way to make sure this happens.

4. Beach trip. Oh heck yes you need to take your kids to the beach! The time in front of the ocean is relaxing for mom and dad, and there’s endless entertainment at the world’s biggest sandbox and swimming pool! Just be sure that you keep everyone slathered in sunscreen and get one of those sun tents for extra protection. I say this as someone who has suffered from MANY sunburns over the years. The beach is fun, but the sunburn is NOT. There are ways to prevent it and make sure that your beach memories are awesome ones!

5. A cross-cultural experience. Taking your child to another country is ideal if you have the means to do it. If that is out of the question, just get outside of the norm. If you live in a rural area, pick a big city to explore, and stay downtown, right in the middle of all those skyscrapers. I’ll never forget my first trip to Atlanta in the second grade, seeing all those tall buildings. I totally fell in love with the city right then and there! If you already live in an urban environment, find a quiet place to go to and explore. I have always wanted to go out West and go horseback riding and stay at a dude ranch (isn’t that funny, since I am not really interested in “roughing” it, otherwise?). Those areas that are known for great skiing in the winter months have their own charm during the summer (and vacationing there is likely a bargain since it is out of season!).

What about you? What kinds of experiences do you think all gets should have during their summers. What are your plans with the kiddos this summer? Do tell!
