Crazy Stuff I Feed My Baby, and My Thoughts on Whole Grains

November 12, 2012 · by Tiffany Merritt · 2 Comments

When Darah was getting ready for solid foods, I read the book Super Baby Food. While I would argue that it is a poorly edited book, it does still contain a great deal of helpful information, as well as encouragement to have your baby try various foods that I wouldn’t have even considered before. I’m actually headed to Whole Foods later this morning, and these are some of the items I will be purchasing today:

  • Brewer’s nutritional yeast
  • Ground sprouts
  • Powdered kelp
  • Wheat germ
  • Tahini
  • Brown rice
  • Earth’s Best infant cereal
  • organic plain yogurt

Some of this stuff probably sounds pretty crazy, right? But I know from experience that if you expose your child to food that is so healthy early on, when food preferences and tastes are developing, you stand a much better chance of having an adventurous eater who will go for more than chicken nuggets, mac and cheese and peanut butter sandwiches later on. I was amazed at the stuff Darah would willingly eat as a baby, and I know giving her such yummy things helped her immune system and of course gave her body excellent fuel on which to run. While Darah still has her picky moments, to be sure, she is much more adventurous with what she will try than most other 3 year olds. I’m going to do the same thing for Layah, and so far she is loving everything she has tried!

Maybe I’m not going to convince you to start putting powdered kelp in your baby’s food, but I do want to emphasize just how important it is to make sure your little one is getting whole grains. The USDA recommends that at least 3 of our grain servings each day be from whole grains and have great, unique flavors. When kids eat whole grains from a very young age, they tend to develop a preference from whole grains over enriched products and that sets them up for nutritional success! Darah loves whole grain bread, for example, whereas I had to make the transition over to whole grain bread in my twenties. It was kind of painful. Just sayin’.

As Layah continues to have Earth’s Best infant cereal added to each of her meals, I appreciate knowing that she is getting lots of fiber to help her digestive system function smoothly. A constipated baby is such a sad sight, and so far we have not had any problems in that area. I also know that I’m hard wiring her taste buds to enjoy the taste of whole grains.

While I’m at the store today, I’m also going to be on the lookout for a product I haven’t yet purchased from Earth’s Best, which is the Fruit and Grain Purees. These squeeze pouches come in some really great blends, such as apple peach oatmeal, apple plum kamut, banana raspberry brown rice and pear apricot barley. Don’t those sound awesome?! Each pouch has 45% of the daily value of Vitamin C in addition to lots of great fiber. I love to make my own baby food, but even after getting some unique items at Whole Foods, I still can’t put together concoctions with all the fun stuff that some of these pouches have on hand, so I’ll be glad to have them as well.

I also appreciate the convenience factor. Just yesterday we were out and about and had to cut our outing short to come back home and feed Layah because I didn’t have any baby food with me. These fruit and grain purees are the perfect thing to keep tucked away in the diaper bag and my purse for such situations.

The Earth’s Best fruit and grain pouches are intended for babies 6 months and older. I can also tell you that my 3 year old continues to love these types of food, too. She eats them as a special snack.
Have you tried the Earth’s Best fruit and grain purees? How about their infant cereals? I’d love to hear if you have a favorite!

How to Introduce Baby Food: My Best Tips for #Feedingmagic

October 20, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

Thanks to Plum Organics for sponsoring my post about tips for baby feeding magic. What if you let baby choose what’s for dinner? Check out their cute “Quest for Yum!” video and see what happens!

how to introduce baby food

I will never forget the day that we gave Darah solids for the first time. It was New Year’s Eve, and we had just come back from a big trip out to California. She was days away from turning 5 months old, and her doctor believed that she might be ready to be introduced to solid food. I waited about 2 weeks after he made his suggestion, and I also determined that I was going to make the majority of her food. So that her first exposure to food would be very smooth (and I mean that literally), I opted to use rice flakes instead of homemade food, which was a bit thicker.

Her first dining experience was pretty funny. She liked the food ok, but was mostly very intrigued by the spoon and by having a different texture. She only ate a few bites, and then she was all done with that for the day. That brings me to my first tip when introducing solids to your baby: Quantity is not important at first. It’s all about exposure. If your baby eats just a bite or two and then wants her milk for the rest of her meal, go with that. If he falls madly in love with the food you have presented and wants more than you prepared, go with that!

My second tip for baby feeding magic is to get yourself some equipment that makes the process of making food easier. Is it absolutely necessary to have a baby food maker? Of course not. People have made baby food for eons without them. But they sure are nice and can help you feel a lot of peace of mind about the way you are preparing the food. Our baby food maker would allow you to steam the fruits and veggies (yes, even fruit needs to be cooked at first) and then, in the same container, puree them. It was awesome, and cleanup was a breeze. We also had ice cube trays that came with a lid for baby food making, and those were indispensable. It helped us easily make appropriate serving sizes for Darah. When it was time for her to eat, feeding her was almost as simple as opening a jar. Instead, I opened the freezer and picked out a balanced “meal” and then popped them in the microwave.

My third tip is to seek out resources for advice and inspiration. We had a book that was all about making baby food. While I found the author to be a little bit crazy in her zeal for homemade baby food, her advice about when different foods can be introduced and her instructions on how to make your own grains were referred to countless times (it’s actually still sitting out on my kitchen counter because we will sometimes make some whole grains to add to Darah’s yogurt!). This resource gave me the confidence I needed to know when to introduce certain foods. I also poked around online to get some recipe ideas, as your will find that eventually your baby grows tired of meals with just one taste. They start to crave more complex tastes, and its quite easy to put together something they will find enjoyable. I think one of the best tips I ever got online was to combine squash, which Darah didn’t especially like at the time, with pears. Once I did that, she gobbled it down every time I fed it to her!

My final tip is to give yourself permission to go with convenience from time to time. There were times when I really wanted to introduce a particular fruit or vegetable to Darah, but it wasn’t in season, so I couldn’t easily make it myself. I turned to what was shelf-stable during those times, and never had a problem with Darah turning her nose up at anything (well, except avocados, but those were homemade!). We also just went with stuff in jars and pouches any time we were traveling. It is possible to travel with your own baby food, but we just cut ourselves some slack in that department. Also, since we saved SO MUCH MONEY (oh yes, you will save LOTS), when I needed to turned to prepared food, I could go for the organic options, which felt great.

Check out one of the companies that we regularly turned to for help when using homemade wasn’t ideal. Plum Organics has a super cute video about babies choosing “yum!” at feeding time and always getting it right by going with Plum Organics. Darah always loved their food, and I would definitely recommend it to others.

So what about you? Do you have any tips for baby feeding magic? Best recipes? Advice for success?

Baby Bites Review and GIVEAWAY

July 5, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 81 Comments

I just finished reading a FANTASTIC book that should be in the home of anyone with a baby or toddler. It’s called Baby Bites, and it is written by Bridget Swinney, a Registered Dietitian. It is chock-full of really good information that parents need to think about when getting their babies started on solid foods. It even has tips and tricks for those of us with picky eaters on our hands.

While Darah eats table food at this point, I still got a lot of really good ideas about foods to expose her to, and what her daily diet needs to have in it. I’m doing a decent job, but after reading this book, I see some areas where I’m missing the mark and need to be a bit more intentional. The book didn’t make me feel guilty about these shortcomings, but rather, left me feeling more empowered to take control of making sure Darah is surrounded with healthy foods and healthy messages about our relationship with food.

Baby Bites is available from Amazon for just $10.40 and is well worth it! I highly recommend this read!

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win a copy of Baby Bites. The contest will run until July 15th at 11:59pm EST when a winner will be selected using Random.org.
