People Towels: Green and Clean On the Go! (GIVEAWAY!!!)

October 20, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · 63 Comments

I’ve never been to Japan? Have you? It seems like a gorgeous country, and also a fascinating culture, since they seem to be on the cutting edge of technology, fashion and also eco-consciousness!

I recently learned that in public restrooms in Japan, paper towels are nowhere to be found, and they haven’t been for about 40 years! It has become a cultural norm there for folks to carry their own personal reusable hand towels. While America has certainly started to get more serious about going green (at least this American has), I have to admit that the thought of bringing my own hand towel with me never even occurred to me until I learned about PeopleTowels which is a fabulous company pioneering the “B.Y.O. Towel” eco-habit in the U.S.!

people towels Why have I never considered this idea? It really isn’t that strange, if you think about it. Do you have paper towels in your bathroom to use after you wash your hands? Doubt it! You have a hand towel, don’t you? Good point, Tiffany, but what a pain it would be to carry around a bulky hand towel. I don’t have room in my purse for that!

Quite true, but People Towels has developed a perfect solution. They offer 9 x 9 towels that are extremely lightweight and roll up to a tiny size, so they can be tucked away in your diaper bag, purse, or even your pocket, if needed! I’ve been breaking in the towel at home, and I can tell you that it successfully dries one adult pair of hands, but then it needs some time to dry (10-15 minutes seems to do it for my towel and it is ready to go again). Check out their information on how they were inspired to make such an excellent product!

I’ve gone paper-free in my kitchen, I am mostly paper free in the diapering department (yay cloth diapers and cloth wipes!). Why not go paper free when I’m out and about (rare though those moments may be!)?

I also think that these are the PERFECT introductory hand towels for kids. They have really cute designs that kids will be drawn to, and once they are used to drying their hands on a People Towel at home, drying their hands on a People Towel somewhere else will be totally normal to them. It would only take one generation growing up NOT using paper towels to bring a People Towels revolution to the U.S. and help us ditch disposables in one more area of our lives.

I bet you never even think about your paper towel use in the office and out on the town, do you? I know I didn’t. But guess what: the average person uses between 2,400 – 3,000 paper towels at work alone in a given year. If you work at home, you are already using a reusable hand towel in your bathroom (most likely) so keep it going when you leave home!

Buy it!: People Towels are an awesome gift idea for the eco geek in your life, and they are also great gifts for yourself if you’d like to make this change for the greater good! You can buy sets of 1, 3 or 5 for yourself or your loved ones! One People Towel is $8 but if you buy 3 or more, they are $7 each. My favorite is this 3 day supply. So cute!

Win it!: Lucky you, and lucky planet Earth! One Stuff Parents Need readers is going to win a 3 day supply of People Towels in your choice of available prints! The contest will run until October 30th at 11:59pm EST when a winner will be selected using Random.org. The winner will have 48 hours to respond before the prize is forfeited and a new winner is selected. Open to residents of the United States. Limit one entrant per household, please.

Mandatory entry: Tell me about something you are doing now that is eco-friendly that you are pretty sure you weren’t doing 3 years ago. For me, I’ve switched over to clean cleaning products, and I was using harsh chemicals throughout my house 3 years ago!

Canvas People HUGE Discount is Back!!! (Free Canvas Photo!)

October 18, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

A few months ago I wrote about a wonderful opportunity to get a canvas portrait virtually free from Canvas People. Before I wrote that post, I did my homework to make sure it wasn’t a “too good to be true” situation. This is a legitimate company that is spending marketing dollars in a creative way: by giving away their products so that customers can see for themselves what a wonderful product they can get from Canvas People and then spread the word. I like their style!

They are running a wonderful promotion for $55 off any size canvas. Here are their canvas prices:

Size Price
8×10 $49.99
11×11 $63.99
11×14 $64.99
16×16 $78.99
16×20 $88.99
18×24 $98.99

So…an 8×10 would be free, and you’d just pay $14.95 shipping (and by the way, their shipping prices are right in line with other canvas companies, so they didn’t inflate them for the promotion).

I’m going to get one as a Christmas present for my parents, I think. And (almost) free is a price that fits nicely with my super tight budget. Here’s what I’m getting. This is a dress my mom bought for Darah before she was born and she wanted a picture of her in it so bad. The only way I could get her to smile that day was by giving her my pearl necklace. Ha!

Do you have someone on your holiday shopping list that would love a canvas photo of your child or your family? Now’s your chance to snag a great deal! Just got to Canvas People and get started!

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. I try very hard to only bring you quality companies that I believe in, and I hope you will be as satisfied as I am with Canvas People!

Tasty Brand: Awesome Organic Snack Options for Kids

October 18, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

Once again, I’ve got a great company that you definitely need to check out if you have a baby who is ready to start solids!

Tasty Brand is a delightful company that offers organic baby cereals and baby foods as well as cereal bars and snacks for your toddler, child, or even yourself! Everything that they make is organic, too!

One product I didn’t get to try but that I’d love to highlight is their frozen baby food. This is the only company I have seen, so far, that offers this, and I think it is amazing! I’m so glad to see these as an option for moms and dads, because sometimes you are too short on time to make your own food, and it is always good to have a little something stashed away in the freezer for those moments! Grandparents and other relatives or caregivers can also keep these tucked away in the freezer for when baby comes over for a visit.

tasty brand fruit snacks We tried two products in the Tasty Brand line, and love them both. First, we went for the organic fruit snacks. I was a little hesitant at first, worrying that Darah might choke on them. I had nothing to fear. Her little chompers went right to work on these! Also, they aren’t as chewy as most other fruit snacks out there, and dissolve in your mouth fairly quickly. I can also report from first hand knowledge that they are REALLY good.

Next, we went for the multi-grain baby cereal. Previously we used Earth’s Best, which offered very fine flakes. At least I always thought they were fine. And then I saw what Tasty Brand offered. You guys, this stuff looks like fish food! They are large flakes, but look more like snow than real food. It is the coolest thing! We keep baby cereals in our cabinet to help thicken up food for Darah. And you know what? I’d keep this stuff on hand to help thicken up our own food, too! Sometimes my soups are just too runny, and using Tasty Brand cereals is a great solution because you can add just a touch or a whole bunch, and the flavor is downright unnoticeable (this is a good thing, in this case).

tasty brand carrot cake Overall, I’m really impressed with the quality of food that Tasty Brand offers. I will definitely be purchasing their organic cereal bars in the future. What an awesome snack option. Darah eats a lot of cheerios and cheese, and these will bring some variety in, which I’m sure will make her happy!

Buy it!: Use the zip locator to find your nearest store carrying Tasty Brand, or purchase it on Amazon or Diapers.com. I think you’ll be really impressed with what you purchase!

Peter Rabbit Organics: Not Just for Babies! (GIVEAWAY!!!)

October 16, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · 74 Comments

I feel as though the organic baby food market has reached a tipping point, and more and more wonderful options are coming on the market. I’m so thrilled to see it!

Today I want to tell you about one such company that offers 3 very delicious fruit snack pouches. Check out Peter Rabbit Organics, a company based in London that now makes products in Oregon so that they can be offered to U.S. customers!

Their pouches are certified USDA organic, and they use local suppliers in Oregon as much as they possibly can. So the food is organic and also local where it is produced. That helps to ensure products that are full of yummy natural flavors!

They call their pouches fruit snacks, but the term may be a bit misleading. When I think of snacks, I think of little treats that aren’t necessarily very good for you. These pouches contain pureed versions of fruit…THAT’S IT!! They are so good for you that I have served them to Darah as a meal!

And so that I could report back to you, I tasted each of the fruit snacks, as well. Um, they don’t taste like baby food at all! They basically taste like a shelf-safe fruit smoothie…yum! Darah had one of the pouches while we were playing in a park one day, and when she was all done, I happily licked the spoon before I put it back in the bag. I’m sure some of the parents around me were grossed out, but that’s just because they’ve never had the Peter Rabbit Organics experience! 🙂

Peter Rabbit Organics offers fruit snacks in the following flavors:
Strawberry & Banana
Mango, Banana & Orange
Apple & Grape (a surprisingly delicious combo, if I do say so myself!)

Find Peter Rabbit Organics Online

So how to you find these to try out for yourself, I mean, for your baby??? Well, they are sold at Starbucks, so you can just follow your nose to the closest store, or you can check out their online store finder. Additionally, you can buy them through online retailers like Amazon.com and Diapers.com. They are definitely something that will be devoured quickly, and they make for the healthiest of snacks!

Win it!: Peter Rabbit Organics wants to give one lucky Stuff Parents Need Reader a set of 3 pouches to try out! These would be fun stocking stuffers or just yummy surprise treats! The contest will run until October 26th at 11:59pm EST when a winner will be selected using Random.org. The winner will have 48 hours to respond to the winning notification before the prize is forfeited and a new winner is selected. Open to residents of the United States. Limit one entrant per household, please.

Mandatory entry: Tell me your favorite fruit! Mine is a mango, with watermelon coming in a close second.

Additional entries:
1. Sponsor love: “Like” Peter Rabbit Organics on Facebook
2. Blogger love: Follow me on Google Friend Connect (not signed up yet? It is painless, I promise!).

Be sure to enter my other current giveaways, found on the sidebar of my home page.

Baby Sign Language and Potty Training

October 15, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · 4 Comments

sign language potty training Since we announced that Darah is working on potty training, and that sign language is really helping out with this endeavor, today I’m bringing you a helpful guest post on this very topic! Misty Weaver is the Chief Editor of Baby Sign Language, a FANTASTIC online resource center for parents and family members who want to use sign language (just a little, or even a lot!) with their young children to help communicate. Check out her helpful tips on using sign language to help with potty training!

For stress-free potty training, try teaching your baby sign language. Baby sign language is a fun way to communicate with your baby, and the signs are easy to learn. Best of all – Baby Sign Language really works. Signing is ideal for times when words aren’t enough – times like potty training! Read on for a some great signs to use when potty training…

When To Start Signing For Potty Training
At least three months before you plan to begin potty training, start using the signs for wet and dry, pee and poo, diaper and potty. Use the signs for wet and dry when bathing or washing and drying hands. This will help when it comes to showing your toddler the difference between a wet diaper and a dry one, so he can understand when he has done a pee. Eventually he will understand enough to be able to tell you – or sign to you – that he has a wet diaper.

First Steps
When you begin to sit him on the potty, make a big fuss whenever he does a pee in it, and show him the sign for Potty. Encourage him to sign Potty when he needs a pee, even if he does it in his diaper. The same for poo. When there are accidents (and there will be!), stay calm and merely sign Wet, so he knows what it feels like to wet himself. It’s important to sign calmly, with good eye contact, so your toddler can tell you aren’t angry with him.

Overcoming Frustration
It can be difficult for toddlers to get the hang of using the potty, and anything you can do to reduce any frustration is a good thing. This is why Baby Sign Language is such a great tool, as it doesn’t depend on a child’s ability to communicate verbally – an extra stress when trying to learn a new, important skill. Once he gets the hang of going on the potty, it will be easy for your toddler to tell you with sign language when he needs the potty, or if he’s had an accident, whatever his language skills at the time.

Make It Fun
Baby Sign Language can be an important part of communication for parents and babies, but it works best when you make it fun. Don’t take signing – or potty training – too seriously. Sign as part of your everyday routine and enjoy it!

Signs For Potty Training
Potty: To sign potty, make your hand into a fist with thumb peeking out between the index finger and the middle finger. Hold the fist out and shake it around a little.
It is like baby is ringing a bell to let you know it is potty time.

Diaper: Sign diaper by taking your hands and placing them down around your waist. Take your index fingers and middle finger together from each hand and tap them on your thumbs. It is like you are playing mini castanets at waist height.
sign language for potty training

Wet: The wet sign is made by reaching up with your hands bringing your fingers and thumbs together while pulling down. Use the wet sign for baby to tell us when she has wet her diaper and needs the diaper changed.

Thanks so much, Misty, for all the helpful info!

What about all you great folks out there in bloggy land? Do/did you use sign language any with your kids? Any potty training tips to share???

Eli Monster Cloth Diapers: High Fashion Meets Function

October 14, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

darah from stuff parents need in eli monster cloth diaper I’ve got another fabulous cloth diaper for all my great readers today, and this one is definitely the most fashion-forward diaper I’ve yet to review. When I think of cloth diapers, I think of cuteness, for sure (fluffy butts are to die for!), but I don’t exactly think “fashion-forward!”

Many companies put out really cute colors, but any time I have tried out a diaper with a pattern on it, the material has been cotton, and the result has been that moisture always came right through the side of the diaper and worked its away across the front or back of the outer layer. Those diapers were always officially useless after an hour, max. Uh, no thanks.

But The Eli Monster is a WAHM company run by a great woman named Stephanie with an eye for design and with the desire to not compromise functionality in order to have something SUPER cute. Check out my video to learn more about how Eli Monster combines fashion and function to make one snazzy diaper!

As you saw in the video, we tried out the new pocket diaper in the Eli Monster line, and we totally love it. While I haven’t personally tried the AIO diapers or the fitted diapers, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy one because the craftsmanship of this diaper is outstanding, and I’m guessing the same holds true for all the products at Eli Monster.

Buy it!: The Eli Monster pocket diapers are $21.50 and come in the most delightful selection of prints you have ever seen! They can be ordered in Velcro or snap!

Win it!: You have a chance to win a $20 gift certificate to Eli Monster! That means you’ll be able to pick out the item that best suits your little monster! 🙂 The contest will run until October 24th at 11:59pm EST when a winner will be selected using Random.org. The winner will have 48 hours to respond to the winning notification before the prize is forfeited and a new winner is selected. Open to residents of the United States. Limit one entrant per household, please.

Mandatory entry: Tell me about a piece of clothing you or your child wears that combines high fashion and function. For Darah, her Babylegs footless tights are amazing. They keep her warm and are so cute. For me, it’s got to be my purple “leather” flats from Wal-Mart. I got them on clearance for $3.00, they have NEVER hurt my feet and they are such a fun, trendy color!

How to Clean Glasses

October 13, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

I’ve been wearing glasses for almost exactly 2 years now. Even though I’m a complete and total grown up (at least in theory), I have NO idea how to take care of my glasses. I’ve improved in this area a bit, but I’m still always leaving them in random places. I also don’t know how to clean them. Tim has been very impressed (and not really in a good way) at just how filthy my lenses always seem to be. Mostly, I blame my beautiful daughter, who loves to touch mommy’s strange eye covers. But I’ve been known to touch my glasses with dirty hands and spend the next two hours with specks of debris or fingerprints on my glasses. Wish I was kidding! 🙂

best way clean glasses Fortunately, it turns out that learning how to clean glasses isn’t as hard as I thought, as long as you have a quality product to use on them. I have been using Brilliant Lenses Eyeglass Cleaner and the microfiber cloth that comes with the cleaner for the past week. Wonder of wonders, this stuff actually cleans my glasses! It’s SO much better than what my breath and a t-shirt can do (uh, yeah, that is how I’ve been cleaning my glasses for the past 2 years). The microfiber cloth is really soft and very safe for lenses (more safe that cotton or whatever other fiber my clothes might be made of). The cleaner itself also adds a protective barrier to the lenses to resist scratches and soiling from water, sweat, dust and dirt. Oh heck yeah I needed this stuff!

Buy it!: Are your glasses gross? I bet they are! Help is on the way! You can pick up a set of 2 cleaners and a microfiber cloth for just $7.99. These are PERFECT stocking stuffers or holiday gifts for anyone in your life who wears glasses.

Win it!: Get Cleaners Online wants one lucky Stuff Parents Need reader to win your own glasses cleaner set! Woo hoo! The contest will run until October 23rd at 11:59pm EST when a winner will be selected using Random.org. The winner will have 48 hours to respond to the winning notification before the prize is forfeited and a new winner is selected. Open to residents of the United States. Limit one entrant per household, please.

Mandatory entry: Tell me about something that you really never have cleaned the right way, or learned how to clean properly much later than you should have (my answer would be that I never really knew how to have a fighting chance of getting stains out of clothes until about 1 1/2 years ago, thanks to being taught a few tricks by my mother-in-law!).

Potty Training Announcement with iStyle Originals

October 12, 2010 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

We have an announcement to make. It is big. Really big.

No, not that (I told you, baby #2 is a long way off!).

But for parents who have changed countless diapers, some not so bad, and some that have made us gag, we’re pretty excited. Ready?

Darah has been learning about using the potty for a month now, and it is going really well! My BFF Leslie gave me really good advice about potty training early: BE RELAXED! We have been, and that is working great for us. Would I call Darah officially potty trained? Absolutely not. But she pees in the potty on a regular basis, and is starting to proactively tell us when she needs to potty (thanks to sign language!). She poops in the potty every other day or so. When she poops in her diaper now, it seems to really bother her. I haven’t quite figured out why that is, since I don’t scold her or even frown at her when she does it. Any thoughts on why it upsets her?

iStyle originals The company iStyle Originals certainly helped us make the big announcement in a fashionable way. Isn’t that shirt adorable? And that face?! PRICELESS! While iStyle Originals isn’t affiliated with Apple, they certainly offer some unique and downright perfect gift ideas for all the Apple fans out there, as well as for their little ones! Darah’s shirt is part of the Nanowear collection, “coverage for your portable unit.” Hilarious! They also have Adultwear, Doggiewear and accessories! I’d love to have the iTweet shirt, as I’m trying to really get into the swing of things on Twitter (finally!).

iStyle originals 2 I especially love these products as holiday gift options because of their packaging. The boxes that the shirts come in are incredibly clever, and will make any technology fan laugh out loud! The shirts are also soft and comfortable, and for us at least, are holding up well in the wash. I love that they are black, too, because black fabric hides all those food and juice stains beautifully! If you are more daring than me, they do offer some options in white, as well.

Buy it!: Go ahead and get some of your holiday shopping done right now! Most of the products on the site are an affordable $19.99! iStyle Originals has humorous gift ideas for the techno savvy person that will actually get used, rather than just be tossed in the closet!

Edit: this giveaway is closed.

Win it!: iStyle Originals is giving you the chance to win the item of your choice from their site! Woo hoo!!! This will be a great gift for someone, or even a fun treat for yourself! 🙂 The contest will run until October 22nd at 11:59pm EST when a winner will be selected using Random.org. The winner will have 48 hours to respond to winning notification before the prize is forfeited and a new winner is selected. Open to residents of the United States. Limit one entrant per household, please.

Mandatory entry: Give iStyle Originals a suggestion for a shirt…something you would wear (even if you don’t think it has mass appeal). For example: I personally would wear a shirt that says, “iBlog.” I’d also wear one that says, “iTeach.” Get the idea?
