Reynolds Real Moms: I So Desperately Need Your Help!

February 18, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 4 Comments

In two days the Reynolds Facebook page and the Reynolds website are both going to be all abuzz with news of the Reynolds Real Moms. This is a team of 10 moms, some professional home cooks, and some not (I would be in the “NOT” category! Ha!). But we all have some great tips and tricks to share to help you get in and out of the kitchen faster.

reynolds real moms

I am the mom in blue just above the l in “Real.” Thanks to some photoshop magic, I actually look tall, when in fact I’m just over 5 feet. As I told my best friend, this fact alone makes it the best picture of my entire life!

Every Wednesday for the next 6 weeks, new posts will be up on the Reynolds Facebook page by each of the Real Moms. And you will have an opportunity to vote for your favorite at that time. At the end of the 6 weeks, 5 Real Moms will be selected to finish out the campaign for the rest of the year.

As a mom who does not value spending a lot of time in the kitchen, I have really become quite passionate about Reynolds products and how helpful they can be. As I have learned how to make better use of them, I’ve shaved time off my meal prep (and my cleanup!) again and again. I want so badly to get to share with you everything I know, not just over the next 6 weeks, but over the next year.

So I am on my knees begging you to PLEASE vote for me! As per the contest rules, I’m not allowed to offer you anything like extra giveaway entries in exchange for you vote (or else I totally would!). All I can promise you is good karma. If you have any suggestions for me for improvement I would be so grateful to hear them! I will submit another post on Wednesday with the link to the voting site. Can I count on you?

What Documents to Keep, and What to Shred

February 18, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 14 Comments

As I have mentioned before, Tim and I have moved 8 times in the almost 11 years that we have been married. Each time we move, it seems that we have stacks and stacks of papers to go through and make decisions on: are these important enough to pack up and move, or can they be discarded now? And if they can be discarded, how do I know what to shred?

how long to keep important documents

Moving time is always a great time to review your papers and see if you can cull them a bit, but even if you aren’t moving, we’re fast approaching the “spring cleaning” time of year, and I want to encourage you to make this your year to tackle your paper demons. You can do it! Here’s my pile that I’ll be sorting through this spring (and hopefully getting rid of 50% or more!):

pile of papers to be shredded

If you often find yourself unsure of the things you should keep, here’s a basic list:

Tax Returns

Keep your annual tax returns for…well…forever. That’s the bad news for those of you who want a paper-free lifestyle.

But here’s the good news related to taxes…you can get rid of all the supporting documentation for your taxes after just 3 years (something I just learned and am SO excited to know)! That’s how long the IRS has to state that they would like to audit you.  If that makes you a little nervous, it is true that the IRS can audit you after up to 7 years if they suspect that your income has been under-reported by 25% or more. And they can audit you at any point in time if you have committed fraud or just never filed your taxes. I’m assuming that you haven’t done any of those things when I state the 3 year rule, here. 😉

Property Purchase/Lease Documents

If you have purchased a house, you need to hold on to all the paperwork related to the purchase and keep it in a safe place. If you have rented a place, most definitely hang on to your rental agreement. We once moved into a place and had the landlord call us to tell us that our very first month of rent was late. Thankfully he was a very nice man. But I was also able to pull out our rental agreement to show him the address I sent the payment to…turns out it was an outdated address. He apologized for that oversight, and we got everything straightened out. So you never know when you might have to refer to it!

Medical Documents

It is a good idea to keep any medical records that you have for yourself or family members.

Certain Certificates

Birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates and social security cards should all be kept in a safe place, such as a fire-proof safe.

Now for the fun part: What to Shred!

Bills

You definitely need to cross check your bank statements and credit card bills with your own records of expenses (oh how many times I have found problematic charges on my credit card….such a shame). But after you have checked through everything and paid your bill, you can shred ’em!

I do think there is something to be said for being able to estimate your monthly utility bills. I am able to do this by looking at our budget that we keep in a fancy excel spreadsheet and where we record our expenses every month. If you are moving to a new place or trying to sell your current one, that’s a good thing to know about your residence. So if you don’t keep your own records, perhaps you should hold on to your utility bills for a year to get a sense for how expensive your home is to maintain throughout the year. But no more than 1 year, people!

Receipts

If the receipts aren’t for anything that you will be returning or that you will be claiming on your taxes, then set them free!

Papers from School

I think it is a great idea to keep a few pieces of art from your children, but there is really no need to keep every single thing that crosses your threshold. I can tell you as an adult that I’m not interested in having a huge box of school papers from my elementary school years. A very small box will do just fine, thank you very much! If you have a tough time letting go of some of the things out of guilt, I encourage you to snap a photo of the pieces. That way you have them forever! Tim and I recently took pictures of some clay art that he did as a child, and that his mother so lovingly saved for him. I really enjoyed getting to see them, and so did Tim. But after a few weeks he realized that he had no desire to actually keep them. So we snapped photos, and let them go.

Now, obviously, clay creations and other works of art don’t need to go into the shredder. But if you have paperwork about your children that includes any sensitive information (address, phone number, social security number) then those need to be shredded. Children are victims of identity theft, too!

I hope this gives you a good idea of where to get started if you are hoping to move with less paper clutter this year, or to just get your current home to be a bit more organized and less junked up with paper!  Get to it!

A word of caution: PLEASE do not skip past the shredding part of this exercise. It is possible that nobody will go through your garbage, and find your personal information and commit identity theft. But it is also possible that they will. After all, identity theft is a lucrative business, and well worth taking a peak through your trash for many people. If you have a garbage bag full of shredded documents, would-be thieves will have nothing to search for, and that’s a very good thing.

My Bathroom Cleaner is EPA Approved!

February 16, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

This post brought to you by CLR. All opinions are 100% mine.

I absolutely DO NOT LIKE cleaning our bathroom. Typically, this is how it gets cleaned: I will go in and pick clothes/toys/whatever the children drag in there off the floor. I will also clear off the bathroom counter, as I fully admit that 90% of the mess there is mine.

And then I have Tim go in to do the cleaning. This division of labor started when I was first pregnant with Darah 4 years ago. The reason we started it was because the cleaning products we used were unsafe for pregnant women to inhale.

Which of course, got me thinking: if they were unsafe for pregnant women, weren’t they really unsafe for everyone???

That’s when we made the switch over to more eco-friendly cleaning products. I have been using CLR Bath & Kitchen Cleaner for a few years now, and have been extremely impressed with it. I gave it a try because I read that it had been given the “Design for the Environment” designation by the Environmental Protection Agency. It is most definitely safe for everyone in the house, including small children and pets.

When I use CLR in the kitchen, I have found it to work just as fast as my old products, only minus the strong smells. While I typically spray my cleaners on the counters and let them sit for a few minutes before wiping, I have found that to not be necessary with CLR. I really appreciate how quickly and effectively it takes care of the dirt and crud on our counters. Tim likes using it in the bathroom because it knocks out the soap scum in the tub. While I don’t have experience with lim deposits and hard water stains, CLR is also said to make short work of those, as well.

photo Jelmar|WeCleanMoreThanYouThink-Home_zpsc4d6b490.jpgOnce we eliminated the nasty chemicals from our home and replaced them with products like CLR, I lost my excused for not doing the tougher parts of cleaning the bathrooms. Thankfully, Tim has been a sweetheart and never mentioned that fact, and so our little arrangement continues! 🙂

We have been really happy customers of CLR and I definitely recommend you give it a try. Also be sure to follow them on Twitter (@clrcleaners) as they tweet some good cleaning tips and the occasional giveaway!

Vegetables for Kids: Tips and Tricks (GIVEAWAY!!!)

February 16, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 82 Comments

I am the mom that serves things like powdered kelp and tahini to my babies. I make plain yogurt at home and add things like nutritional yeast and liquid DHA for babies to dishes. I steam and puree every vegetable I can think of and spoon it into those tiny little mouths. And I do believe I laid a good foundation for my kids being more adventurous eaters.

But with that said, I have to admit that my oldest, in particular, will still have days where she wants nothing more than to survive off food that is orange and brown (bread, cheese, peanut butter). So if you are ever feeling guilty that you “didn’t do enough” to get your kids to eat fruits and vegetables and other healthy foods, take it from the mom who went all out in that department: kids are just going to be picky, at least from time to time.

Vegetables for Kids

BUT….I do believe that if you are feeling defeated in the battle over vegetables for kids that I can offer some tips that will help!

Offer Variety

First and foremost, if your child is still a baby, then there’s no time like the present to introduce as many different flavors as you possibly can. You’d be amazed at the things that you can puree or just chop up and put on their high chair trays. With my youngest, Layah, I have found that there are days when she just really wants to feed herself. That’s when I ditch the purees and break out things like rice and peas. She goes to town!

Offer Often

Also, if a baby rejects a food, put it away for a few hours and try again. Just yesterday Layah only ate 2 bites of the sweet potato porridge I made for her breakfast. I offered it to her again for dinner and she ate the entire thing! Just because they reject it once, that doesn’t mean that they won’t ever like it.

Set the Example

My nine month old is interested in trying ANYTHING that is on my plate. That motivates me to make sure I’ve got plenty of good food there. For example, yesterday I was having mac and cheese and I will admit, I didn’t have any vegetables on my plate at first. When I saw Layah making googly eyes at my food, I hopped over to my freezer and got some sugar snap peas. After a few minutes in the microwave, they were steamed and ready to eat. I got a good serving of veggies, and BOTH of my kids ate a good amount, too…all because it was on mommy’s plate!

Veggies ARE Snacks

My 3 year old asks for “a special treat” every day after her quiet time. I have moved out of my bad habit of giving her something sweet and started to offer her fruits and veggies. Carrot sticks with hummus, for example, have become one of her favorite “treats.” If you treat vegetables like they are something to look forward to, then they eventually will become so!

Blend Tastes

It is true that some vegetables have a more bitter taste, which can make them tough to swallow, literally. But I have learned that there are some vegetables that go nicely together and improve the overall flavor when combined. Earth’s Best has just launched a line of Organic Veggie Purees. These, my friends, are the new best friend of parents battling picky eaters.

Earth's Best Veggie Pouch vegetables for kids

Earth’s Best does an excellent job of finding the perfect match of vegetables to puree together so that the taste is fantastic and the nutritional benefit is huge. Darah begs to eat these any time she sees them in the pantry. She thinks they are “special treats.” And they are…they just happen to also be really good for her!

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win all the new Earth’s Best Veggie Pouches!
