Quick Tip: Find Games for Kids in the Pantry!

February 25, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 3 Comments

When Darah gets home from school (at noon) I try to put together a “lunchbox” lunch for her, as she sees her friends who stay longer at school eating lunch from a lunch box, and she thinks it is the coolest thing on earth.

Frankly, I love the request, as lunch box lunches can be easy to throw together on a busy day.

Recently while I was in the pantry looking for some crackers for her lunch, I noticed that my Earth’s Best vegetable crackers box had a fun little matching game on the back. So I took out the crackers and rolled them up in their package with some rubber bands, and then cut out the activity from the back of the box. It made for a fun afternoon game that I didn’t have to create and that she thoroughly enjoyed.

Take a second today to scope out the back of the boxes in your pantry (cereal, oatmeal, crackers, etc.). You may discover some fun games to offer to your kids!

I am a blog ambassador for Earth’s Best, and as such I have received complimentary products as a thank you for my time. All thoughts and opinions express here are strictly my own.

Best Buy Recycling! Sending Old Friends to a Better Place

February 23, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

Do you have an old friend that still lives with you, and that you can’t bring yourself to kick out because of all the great memories you share together?

I’m talking about an old friend that looks like this:

iPhone 3G in a red case

This was my first iPhone. I got it just 2 weeks after Darah was born. It reminds me of how many ways my life has changed since that day, and not just when it comes to technology!

But, alas, my phone is very out of date now. It won’t run many of the apps that are currently out and that I’d like to use. And so, it is of no practical use to me. But throwing it in the garbage not only seems cruel, but it also seems not very eco-friendly.

Best Buy actually has a solution for those beloved but outdated gadgets filling up junk drawers in your home. Check out the Best Buy Recycling Program. This is one of the greatest recycling efforts in the entire industry, and it is 100% free! On average, Best Buy is recycling 387 pounds of electronics EVERY MINUTE that the store is open. This is such a huge help for our environment, as technology is the fastest growing type of waste on the entire planet. I, for one, really respect Best Buy for taking ownership of the need to provide technology recycling opportunities since they are one of the largest retailers of this technology.

So how does it work? It really couldn’t be more simple! Bring your old electronic item to Best Buy, hand it over to an associate, and it will be recycled and/or disposed of in a safe and responsible way.

Will Best Buy recyle REALLY old electronic stuff, like my Gameboy from 1994 or even my Atari joystick from 1979? Yes, indeed!

Will Best Buy only accept items I purchased from them? Not at all! It doesn’t matter where or when you acquired the item. If it is an electronic item, they WILL recycle it.

Tim actually has a box of older electronic stuff that we will be sorting through today and carrying over to Best Buy for recycling. The environment wins because these items will be properly disposed of and we win because we will reclaim some space in our home and stop fretting about what to do with all that junk!

Thanks so much, Best Buy, for serving as a hub for recycling electronics. I encourage you to gather up your old technology items that are just gathering dust in your home and haul them over to Best Buy! While you are there, don’t forget to browse through their extensive line of Energy Star certified products, as well. That’s right…you can upgrade that energy-draining fridge you have to one that is much friendlier to the Earth and to your monthly energy bill! Best Buy has you covered!

I have been compensated in the form of a BestBuy Gift Card and/or received the product/service at a reduced price or for free. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Teaching a Child How to Read a Tape Measure (GIVEAWAY)

February 21, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 78 Comments

A few months ago, Darah asked, “How do you read a tape measure?”

Hmm…an interesting question! She can read the numbers on the measuring tape that her dad uses around the house, but she has figured out that the numbers mean something more than just a simple number.

I thought perhaps the best way to help Darah learn how to measure objects and how to read a tape measure would be by getting one just for her that she can use. Learning Resources has an excellent child’s tape measure!

A tape measure is actually an incredibly useful teaching tool. You can learn increments, fractions, and of course, measurements with it. You can also work on comparisons for the younger kids.

child's tape measure measuring a toy

Here’s what we are doing to work on the skill of learning to read a tape measure.

When we are having a “measuring session” I get out a piece of paper and serve as the note taker. Right now we are learning about the foot measurement. The tape measure we have goes up to 4 feet. So we hunt for things that are less than one foot, greater than one foot but less than 2 feet, greater than 2 feet but less than 3 feet, and up to 4 feet in length. It is so cool to see Darah using her critical thinking skills and her estimation skills before the pulls out her tape measure to investigate length. She will often make a guess about how long an item will be. She isn’t often accurate, but this will improve with time, I think. Plus, we try to teach her that it is perfectly fine to be wrong. Better to take a stab at a problem and not get it right than to not try at all!

Does anyone have any tips on how to teach children the concept of inches? I’m not sure how long it will be before we are ready for that task, but I’d like to be prepared once she is!

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win a simple tape measure from Learning Resources!

A Bird in the Bag is Worth Two in the Bush: Conquering My Fear of Cooking a Whole Chicken

February 20, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 20 Comments

Does Pinterest ever cause you to believe that you are something you aren’t? Whenever I am on the site, my mind somehow gets confused and starts to believe that I am an expert chef. I pin things left and right that call for fresh herbs, hard-to-find produce, gourmet cheeses and other such things that you will never find for Buy 1 Get 1 Free at my local grocery store. They also make use of kitchen gadgets I don’t own, and techniques I have never even attempted. But for some reason, I believe, at least for long enough to hit “re-pin” that I could totally make that stuff. The caption swears that it is “so easy!” after all.

And then after I step away from the delusional fog of Pinterest, I realize that I’m a real mom, with real time and budget constraints, and perhaps more importantly, with real culinary challenges.

For example, I am 32 years old and even though I cook for my family at least 5 days a week and have for the past decade, I have NEVER cooked an entire bird of any sort. I’ve always assumed that it was too gross and too hard.

But today, my friends, I overcame my reluctance and found a way to make a chicken that was honestly easy. I documented the whole process so that you can learn with me if you have never done this before!

So, here are my elements for our dinner. Notice the complete absence of all those gorgeous veggies from Martha’s version. I just don’t have time for all that, you guys!

Reynolds Oven Bags meal prep

I did, however, pick up some Reynolds Oven Bags, which are rumored to be a secret weapon of home cooks, as they make dinner much less of a chore and cleanup nearly effortless. Sign me up!

And look what I found when I opened my box!

Reynolds Oven Bags coupon

Saving me time AND money. You are seriously speaking my language, Reynolds.

Ok, so I printed off a recipe from the Reynolds website and was feeling super confident. I was about to stop being such a chicken about cooking a chicken!

stuffparentsneed.com Tiffany Merritt

Then I got to the part of the recipe where it told me to loosen the skin of the bird by massaging it with my fingers (why no, I didn’t read the recipe through before beginning…who actually does that?! Smart people….that’s who). This is how I felt about these instructions:

stuffparentsneed.com not wanting to make a chicken

And then I promptly went to the Reynolds website and found a rosemary and basil chicken recipe with no massaging required. Gotta walk before you can run, right?

The first step was so much fun. Add a tablespoon of flour to your oven bag, close it with your hands and SHAKE, SHAKE SHAKE! I didn’t know this recipe would have a little bit of therapy wrapped into it. Mama worked out some aggression! 🙂

Reynolds Oven Bags with flour

Then I melted some butter and poured it on top of the chicken. Again, no massaging required!

Then I put together the spice mix that uses dried herbs. This may cause the hardcore foodies to wrinkle their noses, but not me! My fresh herb garden is not equipped to handle requests on account of it NOT EXISTING. Rosemary and basil were blended with salt and pepper for this lovely mix.

Reynolds rosemary and basil chicken herbs

Now here’s the part where I actually had to touch the chicken. But really, it wasn’t so bad. I mostly sprinkled the herb mix on the chicken and just patted some on in the places that weren’t covered as well by my culinary fairy dust. And look how pretty!

Now all I had to do was put the chicken in the Reynolds Oven Bag and use the tie to secure it. You simply run the tie through the outer loop and the pull it through until it clicks on the tightest possible hinge. Super easy.

Then you poke roughly 6 holes in the bag (I stayed near the top) to provide some ventilation during the cooking process. Then tuck the top part of the bag under the chicken to secure it, and stick it in the oven which has been preheated to 350 and set your timer for 90 minutes.

While I waited for the chicken to cook, I also used the Reynolds Oven Bags to make the most scrumptious herbed corn-on-the-cob. And don’t be fooled by the name, people! Reynolds Oven Bags also work in the microwave! That’s how I used them to make the corn.

Then it was time to clean up. Which of course, I loathe and despise. Just sayin’. But can I show you the pile of dishes I had after preparing the chicken AND the corn?

clean up after using Reynolds Oven Bags

That’s it! So those Reynolds Oven Bags really did save me a lot of time in the cleanup department. But just as importantly, they cooked the food BEAUTIFULLY! I may have eaten two pieces of corn before my family even knew dinner was ready. Don’t judge.

And I can I please show you what my very first cooked whole chicken looked like? I am SO STINKIN’ PROUD!

Roasted chicken using Reynolds Oven Bags

It is golden brown, juicy and perfectly cooked. See?

chicken cooked with Reynolds Oven Bags

Reynolds Oven Bags made cooking something I have feared for 10 1/2 years a total breeze, from start to finish. I am so impressed with just how easy it was! And now it has me thinking that cooking a turkey just might happen in the near future. A turkey!! The thing I swore I would NEVER even attempt! But now that I have my secret weapon and had such great success with so little effort, I’m ready.

Bring it on, bird.

I am a Reynolds Real Moms finalist and have received some complimentary Reynolds products as a thank you for my time. All thoughts, opinions, and culinary mishaps listed here are strictly my own!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Safari So Good Book and DVD Review

February 20, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 98 Comments

Did you know Dr. Seuss’ birthday is coming up on March 2nd? Many schools participate in Read Across America day in celebration of this author who produced so many outstanding books, and whose company continues to publish delightful tales.

I want to celebrate his birthday today by introducing you to the latest book and DVD combo that has come out of the Cat in the Hat Learning Library. Darah and I recently read Safari So Good and it was such a fun read! We were able to go exploring together and on every page, we learned interesting facts about African wildlife. The book is available for $12.99 at Walmart, Barnes & Noble and online.

The DVD by the same title was an excellent compliment to the book, as it expanded upon what was shown in the book through music and a bit of humor. Martin Short is the voice of the Cat, which makes it all the more fun for the grown ups, I think! The DVD retails for $10.95 and can be found or on Amazon for under $10!

Darah loves the Safari So Good DVD, and I have watched it with her and definitely give it two thumbs up. But the book is her real treasure. Can I please show you the page she keeps turning to and asking questions about? It’s this one:

cheetah cubs playing with elephant poop

Yes, she wants to know ALL about why baby cheetahs play with elephant poop! It is completely fascinating to her! The Cat in the Hat definitely has his finger on the pulse of what will get a kid’s attention!

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win a copy of the DVD, Safari So Good!
