Ain’t Nobody Got Time for That! Tips to #FightFlu

January 27, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 2 Comments

This post is part of the blogger program by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)and The Motherhood, who compensated me for my time. Opinions shared here are my own.

Have you had your flu shot this season, friends? My entire family got vaccinated this year and we plan to continue to all get vaccinated every year, and as early in the season as possible. In 2012, when Layah was just 6 months old, she contracted the flu. So did her big sister. So did I. All at the same time, 3 out of 4 people in the house were very VERY sick. Poor Tim. Even though he was fortunate and didn’t get sick, he really had to take one for the team that year. It was a miserable experience, and it was extremely scary to have such young children sick with the flu, especially. Tim had to watch them vigilantly to make sure that their symptoms didn’t decline, because little ones are at a higher risk for requiring hospitalization.

I learned my lesson that year in a major way: do NOT skip the flu shot. I really wasn’t planning on skipping it, but I hadn’t gotten around to getting it, yet, when the flu hit our home.

Checklist Photo
Are you in that exact situation, perhaps? You keep meaning to get your flu shot but for whatever reason just haven’t? And are you starting to think that it’s too late now and the season is almost over so you can just skip it?

Well, let me be the one to very politely but firmly tell you that YOU ARE WRONG! I feel like I should apologize after yelling at you, friend, and I am sorry that it came to my using all caps to get my point across, but I want to really REALLY make sure that you understand that you still have time to get your flu shot, because you certainly still have time to catch the flu this season (a friend of mine got the flu in early May of last year, just sayin’). The peak is between December and February, which would be RIGHT NOW!

I Heard the Flu Shot Didn’t Work This Year

The flu shot typically protects against 3-4 different strains of flu, and unfortunately, this year’s vaccine was a poor match for the H3N2 virus, which is the strain that really took off this year. HOWEVER, it is NOT the only strain of flu that is afflicting people! The flu vaccination may still offer some protection, especially against other strains of the flu that will likely circulate late in the season.

Preventative Tips

The best thing you can do to protect yourself from the flu this year is the get a flu vaccination. Additionally, the CDC has 6 tips that can help you avoid exposure and help prevent others from beng exposed to the flu, as well.

  1. Avoid close contact (with people who are sick).
  2. Stay home when you are sick.
  3. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  4. Clean your hands with soap and water.
  5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  6. Practice other good health habits (get plenty of sleep, be physicaly active, drink plenty of fluids, etc.).

If you already consider yourself to be a healthy person with healthy habits, that is great! You still need to get a flu shot, though…

Did you know? That anyone even young, healthy adults can get sick from the flu and spread it to others. Buzz buzz (text message: You coming out tonight? I can't I have the flu. My niece and girlfriend have it now too.) The short time it will take you to get a flu vaccine. Can help protect you and the ones you love. The flu vaccine is safe and does not cause the flu. #GetAFluVax

If You Get the Flu

If you happen to get the flu this season, there are some important measures you can take to minimize your pain and suffering (although it is going to suck, just gotta be honest).

The most important thing is that you really need to get yourself to a doctor as soon as you start to experience flu-like symptoms. That’s because there are prescription flu antivirals that can be prescribed to you, and they are the most effective within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms. Early treatment can have an impact on the severity of your case and the length of time you feel sick. People actually die from the flu every single year, so the fact that there are prescriptions that can help if used quickly is really important to know!

Hopefully you haven’t gotten the flu this year and you won’t, but be sure to take all necessary precautions, including getting a flu vaccine, practicing healthy habits AND getting prescription antivirals as soon as you suspect you may have the flu. Because friends, NOT getting the flu is super awesome!

The Kickstarter Campaign I’m Backing: Crystal Wash 2.0 (It’s a Laundry Revolution!)

January 26, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Thanks to Crystal Wash for partnering with me on today’s post. I was not required to contribute to their campaign, but I chose to due to how awesome it is (as you will soon see!).

Imagine doing your laundry without using detergent (and the clothes actually coming out clean!).

Imagine getting an alert on your phone when your wash cycle was complete (no more mildewed clothes due to forgetting!).

Imagine being alerted to just how clean your clothes were getting so you’d know if modifications need to be made for optimal results.

Crystal Wash has made all of this possible right now, and I am super pumped about it!

crystal wash

I absolutely LOVE the integration of smart phone technology with a domestic life task that simply can’t be avoided: laundry. I’m very connected to my phone and I’m also quite forgetful when it comes to my laundry. Check out the device located within the Crystal Wash 2.0 that can alert me when a load is ready to be moved to the dryer. It can also alert me when the bioceramics inside the Crystal Wash need to be recharged. The recharge process is as simple as putting them out in the sun for an afternoon roughly once a month. But that’s easy to forget, too! Crystal Wash 2.0 is going to let you know when it’s time so you don’t have to try to remember on your own.

crystal wash inside

I’m always looking for laundry options that are eco-friendly AND that work, and this seems like the very best of both worlds. I have backed this Kickstarter campaign at the $50 level, and that means I’m getting the Crystal Wash 2.0 when it comes out in September AND I’m getting it for a better price (it retails for $60). It will wash an average of 1,000 loads before it is all used up. That equals to about .05/load. Compare that to name brand laundry pods which average about .31/load. That’s a remarkable savings in and of itself, and the technology capabilities are one heck of an icing on the cake! Here’s a closer look at exactly how all this awesome is made, and how you can get one:

I cannot wait for this product to be produced in large quantities! If you think this sounds like the type of product you would love to have, now is the time to get signed up! They have a limited number of opportunities to get that early bird price that I just snagged, so be sure to jump on it!

January’s Beauty Box 5: Much Better!

January 20, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 3 Comments

Complimentary box provided for review purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Affiliate links included.

If you aren’t yet familiar with Beauty Box 5, it is a very affordable beauty subscription service, with a fun mix of what I could call “drugstore” and higher end beauty products. Some things are full size, and some things are deluxe samples. It’s a good mix for the price, which is $12 if you go month by month, or if you go for a year at once, it’s $99, which makes each box $8.75.

I have reviewed a few different boxes, and most of them I liked, though December was my biggest disappointment. You can check out previous reviews below:

July’s Beauty Box 5

November’s Beauty Box 5

December’s Beauty Box 5

And now, my dears, check out January’s Beauty Box 5, which I quite liked!

Lush Decor (at Penny-Pincher Prices!) ($200 GIVEAWAY!!!)

January 18, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 268 Comments

Thanks to Lush Decor for sponsoring today’s amazing giveaway. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

Head’s up all you folks out there who might be looking for some fresh new home decor textiles. I’ve got a site you simply MUST see because the products are very posh and the pricetags are more suited to those of us on a budget (like me!).

lush decor logo

Take a moment to look around at LushDecor.com. This is a young company with employees who are super excited to bring “inspired” designs to the public at prices that are reasonable. I have seen SO many things on this site that remind me of picturesque rooms I have pinned on Pinterest or seen in magazines but that I knew before even looking that I could never afford. This stuff I actually CAN afford, so I, for one, am thrilled to have learned about the site (so thrilled, in fact, that I’ve already made a purchase!).

Bedding

bedding

I ordered this Lux 6-piece bedding set a few days ago and can’t wait for it to show up! The price point was sort of insane for what you get, and I thought it would be such a breath of fresh air in my room come March or April when spring is in the air and I’m ready to lighten the mood in the house.

They have TONS of other beautiful sets, too (even items for youth!). So be sure to check it out.

Shower Curtains

shower curtain

And just this morning I decided to go for this pretty Esme shower curtain. Our old one is torn and it’s time to replace it. The look of this one is so pretty and the price is DEFINITELY right! 🙂

Window Treatments

window treatments

There are so many gorgeous window treatments on this site, but my personal favorite is the Royal Glimmer Window Curtain. These are actually black out panels, which is very useful. They also just look like something you would spend $90/panel for. Loving that $30 price tag!

Additionally, don’t forget to look through the clearance section of the website. It is LOADED with gorgeous pieces and the mark downs are generous. This is such a fun place to not only window shop, but also to actually shop, because the prices are so good!

Check Out with Amazon

I thought this was a super cool feature of LushDecor.com: you can check out on their website using your Amazon credentials! Most people already shop through Amazon, so this makes it extra convenient. It also provides some peace of mind because in today’s world it can be a little scary to shop at a new-to-you website for the first time. No need to worry with this site, friends! Your financial information gets handled all through the Amazon system. Love it!

Coupon!

Once you’ve looked around on the Lush Decor website, I think you’ll agree with me that their prices are absolutely amazing, already. But just for fun, let’s knock off another 10%! Use coupon code PARENT01 at checkout, and you’ll save an additional 10% on your purchase! Woo hoo!

Win it!:

Power Up with a Triple Berry Protein Smoothie (Perfect for Breakfast or Pre-Workout!)

January 17, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 2 Comments

This post brought to you by AllWhites Egg Whites. The content and opinions expressed below are that of Stuff Parents Need.

Like millions of other people, I have started off 2015 by working on healthier habits. I’m enrolled in a wellness program in my gym to help me develop workout routines and I have access to a nutritionist to help me learn how to make healthy food choices.

As we have reviewed my food log, one of my struggles has been incorporating protein into my breakfast. The old saying that breakfast is the most important meal of the day exists for a reason. You need to power up before you launch into hours upon hours of not only being awake, but also exerting mental and physical energy. My nutritionist suggested that I look for some good smoothie recipes, and I’ll admit, I didn’t understand what that could possibly have to do with getting some protein in my diet first thing in the morning.

And then I learned about the power of AllWhites Egg Whites. This is a very convenient product, found in the refrigerated section of the grocery store. It is made of 100% liquid egg whites and can be used in any recipe that calls for eggs. It’s a great product to have on hand if you are like me and working on some health-related goals.

Last week I printed the $0.50 Off AllWhites Egg Whites coupon (which is still available!) and picked up the product. I then headed over to the AllWhites Egg Whites Favorites recipes page for ideas. They have quite a few smoothie recommendations, but I decided to go for this one first.

photo allwhiteseggwhites5_zps6c1d4ffd.jpg Making this glass of deliciousness is crazy-easy!

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup grapefruit juice
  • 1/3 cup AllWhites Egg Whites
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen mixed berries
  • optional: 1/2 cup ice cubes

photo allwhiteseggwhites2_zpsdec79511.jpg First, add your grapefruit juice to the blender. Grapefruit is an AMAZING source of great vitamins and minerals. I will tell you that the tasted of the juice is quite tart, though, so if you think that will be a struggle for you, you could opt for a different juice or even go half-and-half with grapefruit juice and another juice.Another option if you don’t mind the extra sugar is to add a tablespoon of honey. Experiment with it and see what works for you!

 photo allwhiteseggwhites3_zps1144f735.jpg

Time to add your AllWhites Egg Whites. You may be wondering if consuming raw egg whites is safe. I looked this information up my understanding is that if the egg whites are pasteurized, as these are, then the threat of a food born illness will not be present.

 photo allwhiteseggwhites4_zpsa80b9a44.jpg

Now it’s time to add your berries. My blend had strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. If you want a thicker, colder smoothie, go ahead and add your ice cubes, too. Blend away! Give it a taste and adjust to your liking, if needed (I added more berries to mine after tasting it).

This is a really easy recipe to make because it doesn’t require too many ingredients and it comes together really fast. It’s also quite filling, and it provides some excellent fuel for you as you begin your day. It’s also an ideal food choice before a work out!

If you want more great ideas, be sure to follow AllWhites Egg Whites on Pinterest.

Yummy Super Bowl Face-Off: Buffalo Chicken and Bacon Wedge Salad with Naturally Fresh Bleu Cheese Dressing

January 16, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 42 Comments

Special thanks to The Motherhood and Naturally Fresh® for partnering with me today. It’s always a joy to get to spread the word about delicious products my family enjoys. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

You know, I’m not very interested in “the BIG game” that gets played in a few weeks’ time. I am VERY interested, however, in the commercials, the fun half-time show, and most of all, the food. Super Bowl food is all about going big or going home. It’s a fun opportunity to take your dishes to the extreme in the flavor department.

One of the most popular Super Bowl menu items is buffalo chicken wings. I have a confession to make about this particular dish: I only like it a little bit. As in, if someone else made chicken wings I would eat 1 or maybe 2, and the part I would enjoy the very most would be that awesome bleu cheese dressing. Most wings are just too hot for me to handle, and too messy for me, as well.

But when I learned that Naturally Fresh® had a lite bleu cheese dressing available, I honestly couldn’t stop thinking about it. I wanted to try it, and I wanted to create some sort of a recipe where the bleu cheese dressing could justifiably be eaten in large quantities. (What?! Don’t judge me until you’ve tried it!). So I knew that I needed to revisit the buffalo chicken wing issue and bring some heat to the table in a new way.

buffalo chicken salad . So it eats much more like a main dish than a side, if I do say so myself!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb bone-in chicken thighs
  • 1/3 cup hot sauce of your choice
  • 4 Tbsp butter
  • 1 Tbsp vinegar (white or go wild like me and use apple cider)
  • 1 tsp garlic salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1/4 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 head iceburg lettuce
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 package bacon
  • 1 jar Naturally Fresh Lite Bleu Cheese Dressing

buffalo chicken 1

In a slow cooker, add hot sauce, butter, vinegar, garlic salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce and chicken wings. Place the slow cooker on low for 5 1/2 hours. After 1 hour, briefly open up the slow cooker and give the contents a good stir so that the sauce gets coated on the chicken. Return the lid and resume the slow cooking process.

Meanwhile, cook the package of bacon in whatever way you prefer to cook it. My style is to line 2 baking pans with foil, add the bacon, and cook them for 15-20 minutes (start watching at minute 15) at 400 degrees. After it cools down a bit it should be easy to crumble (you can always cut them up with kitchen shears!).

When the chicken is nearly done cooking, prepare your salad wedges. Simply cut your head of lettuce in half, and then cut each half again.

buffalo chicken 3

Now take your cooked chicken out of the slow cooker. Careful, as it is going to just fall off the bone. You want to remove any obvious bits of fat that remain, and of course remove all the bones. Shred the meat by using two forks. It will be easy-peasy. I recommend leaving the shredded chicken out of the slow cooker, but adding back to it approximately 1/4 cup of the sauce it cooked it to help ramp up the flavor a bit. You want moist, but not sopping wet shredded chicken.

buffalo chicken 2

Now it’s time to put it all together!

Simply place a wedge on your plate, and then generously drizzle it with that yummy Naturally Fresh Lite Bleu Cheese dressing. Look at those delicious chunks!

buffalo chicken 5

Add your tomatoes and your bacon, and then put the buffalo chicken around the edge. This makes it easy to grab a hunk of buffalo chicken each time you cut into your salad and take a bite.

buffalo chicken 6

While it takes a while to make the chicken, it is pretty much effortless and the end result is well worth it. I thought the chicken had some heat, but it wasn’t as intense as more traditional buffalo chicken wings. But the marriage between the flavor it had and the Naturally Fresh Lite Bleu Cheese dressing was perfect in every way! I ate this exact meal 3 times in a row after making it because I loved it so much! I probably would have kept going, but I ran out of wedges! 🙁

If you haven’t tried Naturally Fresh products yet, you are really in for a treat. These products are free of artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. They also leave out MSG and artificial thickeners. Truly they have captured the flavor of great, homemade dressings! And if you are wondering if the lite version of the bleu cheese is lacking (as lite dressings sometimes are) I can tell you that it doesn’t taste lite at all. The company uses a nonfat buttermilk to achieve that rich flavor without as many calories.

In addition to Bleu Cheese and Lite Bleu Chesse, the company also offers a Ranch and brad new to the scene this month, Lite Ranch (half the calories of the original!). You can find these products in the refrigerated section of the store at Kroger and Publix.

Win it!: FIVE lucky Stuff Parents Need readers will win one coupon each for a free 12 oz. bottle of Naturally Fresh dressing!

Smoothies of the Rainbow to End Your Breakfast Slump

January 15, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 3 Comments

Thanks to Foodie.com for partnering with me to develop this colorful collection of smoothies. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own!

Check out Smoothies of the Rainbow

by Tiffany at Foodie.com

Breakfast is the hardest meal of the day for me. I grew up eating cereal all the time, always. After trying out Paleo for a few months last year, one of the long term effects of that shift was that I stopped craving cereal. Like, at all. I probably eat a bowl of cereal no more than twice a month, now. I used to eat cereal every single day, and sometimes twice a day, so this shift is major.

The trouble is that I don’t really know what to do for breakfast now. I actually pretty much hated Paleo breakfasts, so I’m not interested in that. And all I can think to do is get loaded up on carbs, which isn’t what I want to do, either.

Smoothies are a great solution, but only if you find some cool recipes so that you don’t have the same exact stuff every morning. I think smoothies are intense, and so I’m not inclined to drink the same recipe too often. I need to switch it up!

So to get some inspiration, I looked to the rainbow and put together the collection of colorful, and (mostly) really good-for-you recipes. I hope you give some of them a try!

Rental Property Tax Deductions (and a Nice Price Break on Tax Prep)

January 12, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

Thanks to ShoptAtHome.com and H&R Block for partnering with me on today’s post. All thoughts and opinions are my own. The information offered below is not intended as legal advice, nor is it guaranteed as tax laws can very state by state. Professionals at H&R Block can help answer any tax-related questions you might have!

Tim and I are in the same boat as hundreds of thousands of other people in the United States who would love to sell their home, but aren’t yet able to due to the recession and subsequent housing market bloat. We refer to ourselves as “reluctant landlords.”

We are actually quite lucky, all things considered, because we have amazing renters who take excellent care of the property and who are timely with their payments. Things certainly could be a lot worse. And as it turns out, there are some tax breaks that you should pay close attention to if you own a rental property, and I thought I’d highlight some of the ones we’ll be using as well as some others that may be applicable to you if you had to find new renters in 2014.

rental property tax deductions

How to Claim Rental Property Tax Deductions

When you are filing your taxes, you use the Schedule E form to claim your deductions for the rental property. Having receipts is key, so don’t forget to save them all, and to keep records throughout the year. If you didn’t do that last year, learn your lesson and start now for your 2015 taxes.

What to Claim

Many of the tax deductions you can claim for your rental property relate to getting new tenants in the home. So any advertising you spend to raise awareness of the property is deductible. If you use an agent to help find renters, then the commission paid is also deductible.  And if you hire a cleaning service prior to renters moving in or after renters move out, this is also a deductible expense.

Once you have renters in place, as we do, you can claim deductions for any maintenance expenses that you will incur as the owner, which is helpful. If the house has any sort of dues or fees required of it (such as a home owners association), those can be written off, as well.

Mortgage interest is something that we were told we wouldn’t be able to claim after 2 years out of our house, but I’ve been doing some research this week and what I’m reading indicates that you CAN claim your mortgage interest as a deductions for rental property (remember that I’m not a tax professional and consult with the pros at H&R Block for the final word on this). Friends, this is VERY exciting news to me, and will really help us out with our tax bill!

The taxes you have to pay for your property each year are also deductible. Our rental home is in Memphis, which has some of the highest property taxes in the universe (at least it feels that way!). I will take that tax deduction with joy!

You can also deduct your insurance premiums, so be sure to have those totals you spent on hand when it is time to prepare your taxes so that you don’t leave them out. Every dollar matters and helps, friends.

Does the rent you charge include utilities? If so, hang on to your utility bills because those expenses are deductible.

If you live int he same area as your rental property, note the mileage on your car for every trip to the home for the purpose of working on maintenance, collecting rent, or showing it to prospective tenants. You can claim 56 cents/mile in deductions for those trips.

This list isn’t exhaustive, by any means, but it covers some of the more common deductible expenses associated with owning a rental property. I’m going to shave some money off my tax bill this year thanks to this list, and I hope it will help you, too!

 Where to File

Just because you own a rental property and therefore will have a somewhat complicated return, that doesn’t mean that you can’t take advantage of filing at home using a service like H&R Block. Tim and I usually file at home and while the process takes some time, the steps are laid out in a very intuitive way so that you don’t worry about missing something! H&R Block is a great option because they have online services you can take advantage of, as well as brick and mortar services if you’d prefer to have some face time with a tax professional. We’ve used both services, ourselves, and have been pleased with the results. Online you’ll have access to real-time professionals who can get your questions answered. When you are ready to file, you can click a few buttons to submit everything online or you can print your information to file by mail. Either way, you get a maximum refund guarantee with H & R Block.

H&R Block stands behind their calculations to the point where if you receive any IRS penalties due to errors in your filing, H&R Block will reimburse you. Additionally, should you be audited, H&R Block will help you prepare for the audit and provide a tax professional to represent you in person, FOR FREE. Their commitment to you doesn’t end after you file.

Free Federal Filing and Cheap State Filing

If you have a simple federal return, H&R Block will file it for you FOR FREE. Boom! Additionally, right now you can get your state taxes filed for $9.99 which is their lowest offer of the year (so no need to wait for anything better…it won’t get better than this!).

Save Even More

While the $9.99 offer at H&R Block is the best deal you will find, using ShopatHome.com actually will help you save a little more! Go through their link to earn 12% cash back on your expenses at H&R Block. See? Tax season isn’t so bad, after all!

The Perfect Girl’s Valentine’s Day Dress for Maximum Comfort (It’s from FabKids, Of Course!)

January 11, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Outfit provided for review purposes. We love shopping at FabKids!

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner (I believe it’s 34 days away!) and you may be looking for something special for the occasion for your kids.

And maybe you are also hoping to avoid something that is entirely pink and red. And itchy/uncomfortable in any way, too. I feel you…my youngest LOVES to wear dresses but you can just forget it if they aren’t super comfy. It can be hard to find dresses that are as comfortable as a shirt and pants, friends!

fabkids january 4

But FabKids has done it this month. They just launched the Pink Be Mine Outfit (though it is hardly head-to-toe pink). It is a simple silhouette in 100% cotton and there are not zippers or buttons, which Layah loves!

She wore it for the first time yesterday and she stayed in it the entire day. I’m sure some of you out there also have kids who love to change outfits multiple times a day, as mine do, so you can understand that staying in just one outfit from start to finish is actually a really big deal.

fabkids January 3

As you can see by the pose she chose to strike for me here, the dress is super comfy. I love the bright, bold colors; frankly it reminds me of the neon trend that happened around 1987 (remember that?) only much cuter.

fabkids January 2

If you haven’t tried FabKids yet, I have to tell you that I have had nothing but great experiences being a member. When you sign up, you are agreeing to receive a personalized shop to check out at the beginning of the month. You have 5 days to either select the outfit you want for the month OR you can skip the month. Skipping is as simple as pushing a button (no phone calls required!) and you can skip as often as you want without any sort of issue. If you skip within the first 5 days, you aren’t charged for that month. You are sent an email to remind you to shop; they aren’t trying to pull a fast one on you. And should you forget and your card is charged, you simply have a credit to use in the shop, and you can use it that month, the following month, or any time you like. It’s there waiting for you when you are ready! All outfits are $29.95 and FabKids always has something on sale, too! I’ve scored some seriously good buys there, personally!

Obviously my experience with FabKids is with their line for girls, but they also have cute stuff for boys, so don’t forget to check that out, boy mamas!

fabkids motocross

FabKids is such a great resource for busy moms and dads. What’s not to love about it? Even our cat, Rose, is feeling the love. 😉
