Nice Prizes for “Nice Guys” (And Gals, Too!): $25 Walmart Gift Card Giveaway!

November 12, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 78 Comments

Thanks to Global Influence and Walmart for partnering with me on today’s post. As always, all thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.

Can you remember the first impression you had of your significant other? Was it spot-on, or way off? I remember the very first words I ever heard Tim speak. We were at college orientation for the community-service based scholarship program we were both part of, and we were going around the room stating our name, where we were from and one thing about ourselves. He was wearing a red shirt. And I’ll tell you honestly that I wasn’t dazzled by him. But that’s because I hadn’t planned on going to college to get my Mrs. So I wasn’t exactly in “man hunt” mode that day!

What He Didn’t Say

He gave his name and where he was from. He said he was from Fayetteville, Arkansas, which was where his family was currently residing, but he had actually only lived there for 6 months. He was FROM Washington state, which would have totally gotten my attention if he had said it, as we all know the ’90s were all about grunge, and for those of us not from the Pacific Northwest, that part of the country was so freakin’ cool.

What He Said That Mattered Most

And then he said one thing about himself. He said, “People tell me that I’m a ‘nice guy.'” Now, there’s nothing particularly remarkable about that statement, except for in hindsight. Tim really is a very nice guy. In fact, he’s so much more than nice. He actually did himself a disservice by using such a vague phrase to describe himself. But he’s also humble and not one to brag about himself. He’s a rare gem; one of the good ones. And I pray that our girls find partners as nice as their father. Because in the end, the kindness that Tim possesses is one of his greatest attributes. And it is one of the very first things I learned about him. I can’t help but think that my subconscious hooked onto what he said and put it in my mind to want to get to know him better.

 The Internship

Speaking of nice guys, they deserve to get to have a fun little break every now and again, and I know my guy LOVES to get to watch movies. The Internship is coming out on DVD, and it showcases just how critical first impressions can be!

For the Princesses In Training: Sofia Talking Doll and Talking Castle (GIVEAWAY!!!)

November 12, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 87 Comments

Darah is a HUGE Sofia the First fan. We actually don’t have cable, so she’s never seen the show that features Sofia. She has, however, seen the movie at least a dozen times, and she has a Sofia app that she loves to play with.

Darah knows that she is a very important part of the Stuff Parents Need family. Her role in the company is to be the chief toy tester, which is something she takes quite seriously, you know!

When Mattel recently sent two of their Sofia the First toys for Darah to experience, she was ecstatic. I’ve been observing her and playing with her as she plays pretend, and I’d like to share our thoughts with you!

Sofia the First Magical Talking Castle

sofia the first magical talking castle 1

While the castle came in the box unassembled, I found that it was all put together in about 20 minutes. It wasn’t extremely difficult, by any means. Darah very quickly picked up on what needed to happen in order to get the miniature Sophia and Clover that were included with the set to talk. She also really enjoyed setting up all the little accessories for a picnic.

sofia the first magical talking castle picnic

One of the features of the castle is that Clover has his own built-in hiding place. He can be secured into the under-side of the bench on the second floor and “hide.” Let me warn you right now: it is REALLY easy to not secure him correctly, and to have Clover get stuck in the bench. We “hid” him once and we will never do it again. Sorry, but this was only a cute idea in theory, and not in practice!

sofia the first magical talking castle clover hiding spot

Darah did seem to really enjoy playing pretend with Sofia and Clover. She liked that Sofia had her own bed, and that she had yummy food to offer to Clover. She even liked the feature that made it easy for Sofia to “walk” up and down the stairs. But I did notice that she got bored quickly with only the two toys to play with in the castle. Mattel offers many more friends for Sofia to play with in the castle, but those have to be purchased separately. I get that, but I think they should have included one more human friend, at least. Darah’s solution was to go retrieve her Octonauts and their Octopod, and make them next door neighbors of Sofia’s. Problem solved!

sofia the first magical talking castle front view

I think this toy is quite fun, overall. Don’t expect it to be the world’s most awesome toy or the world’s highest quality toy. It isn’t either one of those. But it does provide a canvas for creative little minds to play and create on, and so it serves its purpose. If you don’t have any handy “neighbors” at home, though, be sure to pick up a few friends for Sofia to play with in her castle. I think you’ll see play time last longer with this toy with a few extras. The Disney Sofia The First New Magical Talking Castle is currently on sale at Amazon for $49.97, down $10 from its original price.

Sofia the First Talking Doll and Animal Friends

sofia the first talking doll and animal friends 2

This doll is a huge hit with both Darah and Layah. Sofia is wearing her purple amulet, and when you press it, she will talk. Now that isn’t very impressive in and of itself. The magic really happens when you take one of the included animal friends that comes with the doll (Robin, Clover or Mia) and hold them up close to the amulet. That’s when you will hear the animals talking to Sofia, and Sofia talking back! My 18 month old has the hang of how this works and loves to make the toys talk with each other.

sofia the first talking doll and animal friends 1

The Sofia The First Talking Sofia and Animal Friends retails for $39.99. My opinion? The price is a little steep for what it does. Amazon currently has it marked down to $28.99, and that seems like a more reasonable price. My 4-year-old does like having her doll “talk” to her and to her animal friends, so it definitely is entertaining. Beware that the animals unlock certain phrases, so if they get lost, you won’t hear Sofia say those particular things any more. Just a note of caution for those of you with kids who tend to lose their toys easily! With that said, though, if you have a big Sofia the First fan in your home, the doll is cute and a whole lot of fun for the kids. I got bored with it fairly quickly, but fortunately, it isn’t my toy. The ones that matter play with her every day. 🙂

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win a Sofia the First Talking Sofia and Animal Friends doll!

Creating Fun Fall Memories and Drinking Some Seriously Good Coffee

October 25, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 200 Comments

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!!! Yes, I know it isn’t Christmas. And I’m not even talking about Christmas (although that is, in my opinion, the second most wonderful time of the year). I’m talking about FALL. In Chattanooga, this is the time of the year when it is just absolutely gorgeous outside, and so the weekends are jam-packed with festive and fun activities, like heading out to a farm to visit a pumpkin patch. Tim and I both were almost giddy about getting out there with out two little girls, and seeing them run around, laughing and playing together. What we got looked a bit more like this: coffee-mate pumpkin patch Ok, fair enough. I suppose it is a rather strange ritual. So I can understand my daughter’s failure to be super impressed. But lest you think that she is overly sensitive to doing things that are a bit unusual, consider this: coffee mate corn pit   Girl had NO problems getting into a pit of corn and rolling around. It isn’t normal, but it should be! Now “4,000 bags of corn kernels” is on her Christmas wish list so she can recreate the moment in the comfort of her own home. As for me, I have a few rituals of my own for this time of year. We start with a fantastic scent of the season. I put my Spiced Pumpkin candle next to the pumpkin we hauled home from that wacky pumpkin patch thing we had to do.  coffee mate scented candle for fall And while I would NEVER switch out my beloved iced coffee for a hot beverage, I do switch up my flavored creamer. Currently, I’m going back and forth between Coffee-mate’s Pumpkin Spice and Spiced Latte. And just so you know, they are every bit as good as they sound! Also, just a FYI, if you are watching those calories this season, the Pumpkin Spice flavor is available in sugar-free. I’m going to try it next to see if I love it, too! coffee-mate pumpkin spice and spiced latte In fact, the Pumpkin Spice quickly became such a favorite of mine that I felt sad limiting my consumption of it to just coffee (don’t judge unless you’ve already tried this creamer, and if you have, then you totally empathize!). I whipped up these Individual Swirled Pumkin Cheesecakes, and oh. heavens. YES!!!! coffee-mate pumpkin swirled cheescak Let me tell you, friends. If I’ve got a great cup of coffee in my hands, I’m ready for all the pumpkin patches, 4-year-old eye-rolls, and corn pits you can send my way. And if I’ve got a yummy treat to enjoy with my coffee, well then, there’s really no doubt that it must be the most wonderful time of the year, indeed! Be sure to snag these yummy seasonal flavors from Coffee-mate before they are gone from the shelves…they are only here until December! After that, well, you’re just going to have to choose one of the other 25 AMAZING flavors Coffee-mate offers. 😉 Happy fall, y’all!  Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader is going to win a fantastic prize pack from Coffee-mate. It will include the following:

  • 3 full value Coffee-mate product coupons
  • 1 set of Coffee-mate recipe cards
  • 1 French press
  • 4 glass coffee mugs
  • 1 seasonally scented candle

Introducing MomFeeds: Bite-Sized Read for Busy Moms

October 23, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 41 Comments

This post is sponsored by Weight Watchers and The Motherhood. However, all opinions are my own.
Next to my dresser in my room, I have a stack of unread print magazines that I subscribe to. I love to read magazines, but finding the time to get all the way through one is really hard to do. Can you relate?
momfeeds magazine pile

7 magazines just waiting for me to read them! What are the odds that I’ll get through them all before the next batch comes in? Not good…

So I was very intrigued by the idea of an all-digital magazine that is available to read on my tablet, FOR FREE. But isn’t it the case that you get what you pay for? So I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from MomFeeds, which is the new publication from Weight Watchers. Would it be full of ads, just like a print magazine? Hard to navigate? What if I only have time to skim the titles? Can I highlight articles to read later, or not so much?

MomFeeds

momfeeds digital magazine from weight watchers
Let me tell you, I was REALLY impressed with MomFeeds. First and foremost, I have never ever read a magazine that had SO many articles that were so timely and relevant to my life.  After quickly flipping through the headlines, I selected 18 articles that I wanted to go back and read. What’s the last magazine you read that had that many articles that spoke to you? Bet you can’t think of one. And even if you can, I bet that magazine wasn’t free!

What I’m Reading

The content for MomFeeds is always being updated, but here are some of the articles that I’m the most excited about right now, just to give you a sense for what you might find if you take a peek!
  • Tastes Forbidden (but it’s not): Easy Fried Rice
  • 4 Rules for a Clothing Budget
  • Mom’s Weigh In: Back on Plan After Baby #2
  • Mom Makeover: Fab Hair Tricks That Make a Big Difference
  • Instant Mom Energy – Blackberry Peach Smoothie

I am really impressed with this curated list of recipes, tips, style advice and news, all packaged in a way that I can easily access. I can select the articles that interest me now, and add them to a list to read as I have the time to do so. And since it is on my iPad, I don’t have to add another magazine to “the pile” to get around to one day. Also? I get to skip past all those ads that seem to take up 50% or more of print magazines.

How You Can Find It

I’d love for you to check out MomFeeds, and it is really easy to find! Simply visit weightwatchers.com/momfeeds. If you don’t already have the (FREE) Flipboard app (which is such an awesome app, but that’s a topic for another day…), be sure to download it, as that’s the app you’ll need to use to read MomFeeds. Be sure to subscribe to MomFeeds so that you get the fresh new content delivered to your Flipboard and you don’t miss a thing!
Sound a little confusing? No worries! Weight Watchers has put together a video tutorial to show you exactly how you can start checking out MomFeeds. They know we don’t have time for anything that is complicated in our lives (we have enough of that, already!) so they want to make it as easy as possible. And it is, I promise!

Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers has really impressed me with this publication, I have to say. They are once again showing themselves to be, in my opinion, a true leader in helping individuals make healthy lasting changes in their lives. For over 50 years, Weight Watchers has helped millions of people lose weight. I have heard from many friends about the Weight Watchers method, and just how effective it can be. I have actually decided on my own to try out Weight Watchers for the next 3 months (3 month online trial subscription provided) and see what I can learn about making choices that are good for me. It’s not just in an effort to change the numbers on the scale, but also in an effort to shift around some of the mental roadblocks that are holding me back a bit, and causing me to reach for food when life gets hard. If a company is willing to provide something like MomFeeds, absolutely free, in an effort to help me on that journey, then I think that speaks volumes about them. I’m on board and excited (and yes, nervous!) about what’s to come!

What we have here is a lovely image of an owl on a card. But if you tilt it a little bit, you’ll see this:

tild & view science 2

What an awesome way for kids to start learning about bones! This is the Tilt & View Animal X-Rays set, offered by Learning Resources. It comes with 18 double-sided cards (each card has additional information about the animal being viewed on the back side).

I can tell you from experience that this set captures the attention of children and adults, alike! It makes a fantastic “on the go” toy, too, as it can easily slide into mom’s purse or take up very little room in the car, but hold a child’s interest for quite a while.

It is priced at $17.99, which is super reasonable and makes it a very strong contender for an item to purchase multiple copies of for the gift closet (we average one birthday party each month…gotta be prepared!).

Easing Back, Heel and Knee Pain From the Ground Up (Giveaway)

October 11, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 156 Comments

fleetwood mac quote

Isn’t that the truth? Every time I hear that song, this part of it seems to resonate with me just a little bit more. I am, indeed, getting older. And that’s not entirely a bad thing. I’m more comfortable in my skin, more confident, and more willing to push myself to do hard-but-good-for-me things.

But I’m also feeling my age start to catch up with me, too, and that means that my body is a bit more creaky and that I experience more pain after being on my feet for a while. For me that pain is primarily in my calves and my back. And I recently learned that a lot of the source of that pain actually comes from my feet. Please check out the article below for some really great tips on steps you can take to alleviate heel, knee and lower back pain, just by taking better care of your feet. I have started to implement some of these strategies and I can tell a difference in how I’m feeling already!

Consider an area of your body that you use the most and probably ignore more than you should.  That nagging pain in your heel in the morning, your sore knees, and your aching lower back are all related to our body’s foundation, our feet.  Fortunately, the pain is not only treatable, but preventable as well.

Phil Vasyli, podiatrist and innovator behind Orthaheel shares easy, affordable, and accessible tips for anyone to treat and prevent foot pain so that the rest of the day we are free to move, walk and run with ease and comfort.

Advising his patients to pay particular attention to lower body alignment and the proper posture of their feet will help achieve proper biomechanical body movement, and therefore maintain pain-free feet at all times. “An orthotic device realigns the rear-, mid-, and fore-foot, removes the tractional forces, and raises the arch back up to its proper position,” says Vasyli.

  • Wear slippers.  Never walk barefoot, even indoors. Advisable to put on soft, comfortable slippers, but be sure they also have hard soles and adequate arch support.  Look for slippers with a deep heel cup to stabilize, support, and realign the feet, helping to improve posture and balance.

  • Home therapy:  Roll or massage the foot on a golf ball or tennis ball to improve blood flow and break down adhesions that result from exertion and possible injury.

  • Maintain/increase flexibility: Stretching is the best method to counter the constant contraction of muscles throughout the day and especially while walking.  Since the calf is the most over-used muscle across the board, it is essential to stretch.  Gentle stretching exercises of the calf, hamstring, and posterior muscle groups maintain flexibility and healthy muscles in the recovery phase.  Should you stand for long periods of time, take time to do recommended toe, heel, calf, and Achilles stretches.

  •      Roll feet in both directions to warm up ankles.  Try drawing the entire alphabet with your feet.
  •      Flex and point toes for 2-3 sets of up to 10 full reps.
  •      Stretch Achilles by flexing foot against a wall and lean forward.  Hold stretch for 2 sets of 15-30 seconds each.
  •      Stand facing wall with feet 2ft apart and heels firmly planted on ground to stretch calves.
  • Massage: Regular massage of the feet, legs, and lower back focusing on the lymphatic system drains away toxins and loosens the contracted muscles.  Other benefits include: increased blood flow, range of motion, flexibility, decreased muscle tension and spasms, and an overall sense of well being.

  • Ice: Twice daily icing on strained foot muscles for 20mins at a time prevents inflammation.   A common recommendation that works well for runners and those with plantar fasciitis is to freeze a water bottle and roll it under your foot slowly from the fore foot to arch to heel for 20mins.  In addition, elevation of the feet encourages all built up and congested blood/inflammation in the feet to drain.  Ice increases healing and peripheral circulation.

Want to know which tip struck me the very most? The one about wearing slippers! I work from home, so I spend the majority of my dare barefoot, simply because I can! But for the past few weeks I have been wearing slippers sent to me from Orthaheel, (the Geneva) and can I just say this….

WOAH.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My feet feel SO good in these slippers! And I really even hesitate to call them slippers, because look at that sturdy heel. You can absolutely wear these out of the house without worrying that you are going to damage them. They are ready for a trip to the grocery store of the school pick up line. And yes, I have worn them to both places!

orthaheel orthopedic slippers, Geneva

So now that I’m experiencing less pain, I want you to have the same experience! You can purchase these fantastic slippers for $69.95 for yourself or a loved one here. Or…

Two Fantastic New Releases from Scholastic (Giveaway!)

October 7, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 104 Comments

Special thanks to Scholastic for providing these fun DVDS for review and giveaway. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Today I have a fun hodgepodge of new releases from our favorite DVD source, Scholastic!

null

First up, let’s talk all things Halloween! Scholastic has just released a 3 disc set of Halloween favorites that are sure to get your kids talking! Definitely check out the Halloween Stories Collection, Volume 2. You’ll find witches and skeletons, and also a lot of fun and bravery. My 4-year-old is able to watch everything on the set without freaking out, just to give you a litmus test of the “scary factor.”

I think Darah and I both have the same favorite video on the set, and that is the Day of the Dead. Darah really enjoys seeing the dancing and instrument-playing skeletons, and it also gave us the opportunity to talk about another culture, as well as what happens to people when they die. Being able to talk about celebrating the memory of others seemed to really resonate with her, which got me thinking that we need to do a little Dia de los Muertos celebration of our own, this year!

This DVD set retails for $24.95 and provides some great stories for this time of year! I definitely recommend it. It would be fun to show at a sleepover! 🙂

children make terrible pets dvd

I have two other great DVDs to share as well! Children Make Terrible Pets, and More Stories About Family (ARV $14.95) is SO cute, you guys! The title story is all about a bear who finds a young human and wants to keep it as a pet. Her mother tries to warn her that children make terrible pets, but this is one lesson she has to learn on her own. Darah thought it was absolutely hilarious. Such a fun one….great for the stocking!

mo willems dvd

And last, but certainly not least, there’s a new Mo Willems DVD out!!! Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late is, like all the pigeon tales, quite funny. But the real treasure in this set, in my opinion, is Knuffle Bunny Free. I’m not going to give away too much about this story, but I’m going to be real with you guys and tell you that I BAWLED my eyes out while watching it. Darah did not…so please know that it isn’t horrifically sad. It just struck one heck of a chord with me as a parent, thinking about my own child growing up a little bit. I’m actually tearing up just thinking about it now. It is such a sweet, touching story. MUST WATCH! This one also retails for $14.95 and should be required viewing. Just sayin’.

Win it!: Let’s do a giveaway for TWO winners, today! One will win the Halloween set, and the other will win the Children Make Terrible Pets and Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late discs.

Fall Transitional Piece for Kids: Upcycled Cashmere Leg Warmers

October 5, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 76 Comments

Transitioning into the fall wardrobe is a delightful time for me, personally. I absolutely adore fall clothes; so cozy and comfy. My daughter, on the other hand, as a bit of a harder time. You see, she’s a dress girl, through and through. I invest heavily in thick tights for the winter months, because I know Darah is going to want to wear a dress if at all possible, even if it is 40 degrees outside.

I recently connected with Kate Joranson, the owner of Tree Line Studios. She is all about helping folks “fill in the gaps” in their wardrobe, and successfully navigate the changing seasons, or hold on to a piece of clothing for just a little bit longer as warm days yield to chilly ones. She sent Darah a pair of cashmere leg warmers to try out, and we had a lot of fun modeling the look out in the yard.

Cute Cashmere Legwarmers

We decided to pair these adorable leg warmers with a pair of tights, just to test how they might feel as an extra source of warmth. Darah commented within just a few minutes of putting them on that her legs were warm and toasty!

cashmere legwarmers 2

Kate has recycled all of the cashmere that she uses for her leg warmers, scarves and fingerless gloves. She adds cute hand-knit trim and cuffs and brings these beautiful fabrics back to life for a whole new adventure.

cashmere legwarmers with knit detailing

And yes, just in case you noticed, Darah’s shoes are, in fact, on the wrong feet. She dressed herself, and this little detail was lost on me. Oh well. She’ll be fine!

I love what Tree Line Studio produces (very high quality products) and I love the sentiment behind them (use it up, wear it out, stretch the life). These leg warmers could also be used as sleeves to help squeeze some extra time out of a beloved short-sleeve shirt. There are many ways to wear this look, and it is a great way to add a pop of color and fun. I love having them since I know that Darah plays outside every single day for at least 45 minutes, even when it is freezing outside. These leg warmers not only can help with the transition to fall, but can also be a layering piece during the coldest time of the year to provide extra protection.

Also…they are so stinkin’ cute!

Do you have any tips for things to do to transition your wardrobe during the changing seasons? I’d love to hear them!
