Honest Company Mineral Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 Review: An Honest Assessment

July 10, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

I’m a firm believer that if you are spending the day outside with your kids and any part of that day is going to involve water activity (beach, pool, splash park, etc.) then spray on sunscreen is totally the way to go. Ounce for ounce it’s quite a bit more expensive than the lotion, but the convenience factor makes it worth every single penny.

Except there’s a problem: spray on sunscreens have a reputation as being unsafe, because you don’t want to inhale those nasty chemicals and that’s exactly what will happen when you spray them on.

And this is why I turn to Honest Company for my spray on sunscreen option. It’s a mineral-based product and doesn’t have any of the junk that your lungs need to avoid. It’s SPF coverage isn’t sky high (it’s 30) but if you research SPF a bit, you’ll quickly learn that there’s not much of a point of anything beyond 30, anyway. The truth is simply that you need to reapply your sunscreen fairly often if you plan to be outside for a while.

I find the coverage to be even and generous with Honest Mineral Sunscreen Spray, and because it is white when it comes out, you can see exactly where you sprayed and where you didn’t. Unlike other sprays, though, you will need to rub this one in a bit. It only takes seconds, and I supposed it isn’t necessary, but you will look like someone who walked through a splatter paint party if you don’t.

And now for a warning about this stuff: do NOT apply it inside your house or while standing on something you really care about (like your back deck). We have stains on our deck from this stuff because it does not wash off. Learn from our mistakes and put this stuff on while on the grass.

eco-friendly sunscreen

Honest Company sells this product for $13.95, but to get the best price you need to add it to a bundle order, as a bundle of 5 items costs just $7.20 per item, which almost cuts the cost in half. The only bummer is that you can only order 1 spray sunscreen per bundle (I would have purchased 5 at once if it had been allowed!). But you can add up to 3 additional items to your bundle for 25% off, and you can do sunscreen for all 3 of those slots if you want. The price per bottle at 25% off is $10.46, which is competitive with other spray on sunscreens your find at brick and mortar stores, only minus the nasty chemicals.

The product isn’t perfect, especially with the staining factor on hard surfaces, but it’s still my go-to for my kids. I don’t like having to tell my kids to hold their breath while I apply something to their skin, because if it’s that bad for their lungs, why would I slather it all over their largest organ (the skin), too?

An Honest Assessment: Prenatal Vitamins Review (Not Pregnant? That’s Ok!)

March 5, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Referral links to Honest Company prenatal vitamins included at no cost to you. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

I have always had crappy nails, plain and simple. They break easily. I bite them. The cuticles are a mess. It’s just not an area of strength for me at all. Except for when I was pregnant.

When I was pregnant, I had strong, gorgeous nails.

I finally realized that my prenatal vitamins were helping my nails get what they needed to be improved. This got me thinking about whether or not I could continue taking my prenatal vitamins after my pregnancy. Please keep in mind that I’m not talking about prescription medication, as I am not a doctor and can’t really go there. And I’m only speaking about my own experience and conclusions. You should research the issue on your own, as well.

But what I found was that occasionally taking prenatal vitamins when not pregnant isn’t really a bad idea at all.

prenatal vitamins not pregnant

I have been using Honest Company Prenatal Vitamins for a few key reasons. First, I absolutely adore Honest Company and the thought they put into each and every product. The ingredients in these vitamins are things that I can feel completely confident about putting into my body, and if I were pregnant, that I could feel great about passing along to my growing baby. No nasty chemical synthetic junk in here.

Since I am NOT pregnant and don’t plan to be pregnant, though, why would I keep taking a prenatal vitamin instead of a regular multi-vitamin? I will tell you that I don’t exclusively take a prenatal vitamin, and my opinion is that if you aren’t pregnant, you shouldn’t either. But I do take them once or twice a week and I think the ingredients are great for my body in those occasional doses. I also believe that they are helping my nails (and my hair)!

Additionally, if you are still of child bearing age and are in a relationship such that pregnancy is a possibility, even if it is a very slight possibility, it’s not a bad idea to have that extra folic acid  and iron in your system. Surprises happen people, that’s all I’m saying. 🙂

And finally, if you aren’t pregnant anymore but you are still breastfeeding, it’s a good idea to continue on with your prenatal vitamins regularly. Always follow the doctor’s advice on that one, but everything I’ve read seems to indicate that this is a good idea.

If you have some leftover non-prescription prenatal vitamins and are wondering if you should use them up, or if you are shopping for vitamins and you are curious about some of the benefits of prenatal vitamins even if you aren’t pregnant, I recommend checking out what The Honest Company has to offer. I also recommend reading up on your own, as you will find that pregnant women do have different nutritional needs than women who aren’t pregnant, so there’s something to be said for not taking prenatal vitamins every single day if you aren’t pregnant. I hope that helps!

Honest Company Organic Healing Balm Review and Uses

I’ve been using the Honest Company’s Organic Healing Balm for over a year now, and I continue to be amazed at what an extremely versatile product this is.

organic healing balm

It’s important to note that a healing balm isn’t intended to be an exact substitution for lotion. It is very thick (think sort of like Vaseline) so it doesn’t spread all that far. But just because you can slather it all over your entire body, that doesn’t mean that this product isn’t crazy useful.

Here are some of the ways I use it.

1. Overdrive for your lotion

I actually will add a dollop of organic healing balm to the lotion I’m about to apply to my body and mix it together really well before applying it. That’s one way that I manage to get a bit of this product all over without having to use half the tube. I think it gives my lotion an extra boost of intense moisturing power, too.

2. Hair serum

Yep, you can take a tiny dab (like the size of a pea) and rub it vigorously between your hands and then run those hands through dry hair to help cut down on the frizz factor. This is such a great hack for those of us in humid climates.

3. Dry Patches

Do you have any areas of your skin that just seem to struggle? For me, it’s the heels of my feet and my elbows. I apply the organic healing balm to those areas on the regular and it makes a really huge difference.

4. Lip Balm

The ingredients in this balm are perfectly safe to apply to the lips, as well. I love when a product can do so many jobs at once, especially if I’m traveling so that I don’t have to carry as much with me.

5. Brow Gel

A very tiny amount of this product can also be used to help your eyebrows look nice and smooth and to keep everything right where it should be.

6. Hand Therapy

Before heading to bed, apply the balm to your cuticles, or even to the entirety of your hands. It provides amazing moisture and helps keep those hands looking and feeling soft.

7. Baby Balm

If you have a little one in the home, try this product out for diaper rash, or even just for a little hand or foot massage.

8. Eye Wrinkle Attack

I’m of the age where those fine lines around my eyes aren’t quite so “fine” anymore. I’ve been dabbing a tiny amount of this product right in that area (obviously not going close enough to get into my eyes) and I’ve been really pleased with the results. This is another hack to try right before bed.

Honest Organic Healing Balm contains sunflower, olive and coconut oils as well as shea butter. Those are all absolutely fabulous ingredients for skin health and happiness. There’s also Tamanu oil, which I have read is great at restoring skin’s moisture, as well as chamomile and calendula which are soothing agents. It is a certified organic product, as well.

Where to Buy Honest Company Products

If you’d rather not go through the Honest Company’s bundles, you can purchase this item at retail price through Amazon.  And if you’d like an option that’s a little easier on the wallet, definitely give Aquaphor a try.

What is Shave Oil? A Closer Look

January 27, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

Referral links may be included at no cost to you. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Last year I started buying my husband shave oil from The Honest Company. When I gave him his first bottle he said, “What is shave oil?” and I said, “………”

I knew it was meant for shaving (obviously) and so did he, but I think what he was really asking is how it works and why he should let go of his beloved shaving cream and give this a try, instead.

what is shave oil? So I did a little research to better understand what shave oil is and how it actually works. What I have learned is based only on Honest Company products and I can’t offer any comments on other brands, simply because this is all we have tried.

If you want to learn more about Honest Company and why I’m such a big fan of the company, check out my extensive list of reviews of Honest Company.

Shave oil is basically a blend of organic botanicals and oils that lubricates the skin so that you can get a very close, smooth shave without dulling your blade. The ingredients are also designed to help prevent irritation caused by the razor, and to soothe the skin.

My husband said that ditching the foam took a little getting used to (sort of like making the switch to more natural shampoos and losing all those suds) but that he has been really pleased with the quality of his shaves and with how his blade is responding. I haven’t noticed razor burn on him since he switched to this shave oil, either.

He also commented that he is surprised by how little of the product he needs. I’m honestly relieved to hear that, because the bottle is only 2.2 ounces big, and the retail price is almost $16. But he uses the same bottle for a few months before needing a new one. He would go through his bottles of shaving cream at a much faster rate.

Best Shave Oil at the Best Price

This is most definitely an item that you should purchase in a bundle at Honest Company (you get to select from a HUGE number of items…any 5 for just $35.95). The per item cost when you do a bundle is just $7.20, so you save quite a bit on this item! It’s one of the very best deals in the bundle option, so I typically pick one up every other time I place a bundle, and now my husband has 3 extra so he’ll be good for over a year. 🙂
