Rescue Irritated Skin with Pure Fiji: Review and GIVEAWAY!!!

July 25, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 2 Comments

There are certain people in this world that mosquitoes absolutely love and adore. I am one of those very lucky people. Evidently, I am the tastiest of all treats to any and all mosquitoes in the area, and every time I step outside, it’s like putting blood in a shark tank. They come from miles around, I swear, just to make a little snack out of me.

All this is to say that I’m covered in mosquito bites for several months out of the year. Fun times.

I have some anti-itch cream in my medicine cabinet, and I am not afraid to use it. But it smells so….medicinal. I was really excited to hear about a natural alternative from the company Pure Fiji. They have a Dilo Rescue Body Spray and it is pure indulgence! From the website: “Refresh, Revive and Replenish skin instantly with this soothing natural spray. Made with dilo, aloe and ngi grass extracts to soothe and hydrate skin for 24 hours, discover a gentle yet highly effective way to soothe, moisturize and nourish irritated skin affected by sunburn, dehydration, insect bites, rashes or shaving.”

I really love just how useful this product is. I have used it on razor burns and insect bites so far, and have been really pleased with the results. I am also glad to have it on hand should we experience any sunburns this season (hopefully not!). I love having something that is based on ingredients found in nature. After reviewing the Pure Fiji website, I also have to say that I’m excited to have a product from a company like this. They are doing great things in Fiji and have an excellent commitment to treading lightly on Mother Earth. Their packaging is eco-friendly and they use sustainable raw materials in their production. Good stuff!

Pure Fiji has a drool-worthy line of products for face, skin and hair that will leave you rejuvenated and hydrated, almost as if you are just returning from a fantastic vacation in Fiji! Many of their products make use of coconut oil, which I have learned is one of the very best ingredients for hydrating your skin and your hair. And the smell of their products is unbeatable. It takes me back to the few times when I have had the luxury of going to a spa for massages. I feel instantly relaxed when I smell my Pure Fiji product. That in and of itself is worth a lot to me!

Buy it!: Pure Fiji products are available online and free shipping is offered to orders over $79. The Dilo Rescue Body Spray I reviewed retails for $39.

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win the Dilo Rescue Body Spray! The contest will run until August 4th at 11:59pm EST when a winner will be selected via Random.org. The winner will have 48 hours to respond to winning notification before the prize is forfeited and a new winner is selected. Open to residents of the United States. Why I Don’t Own a Coffee Table

July 24, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

We used to have a cute coffee table. We inherited it from friends. It was glass and iron; really lovely.

But once we found out we were expecting, the table started to look quite different. We noticed the sharp edges and that the materials were hardly baby-friendly. It had to go!

We replaced it with a very clever solution: a leather storage bench. It is lower to the ground than most coffee tables, but it did the trick just fine. It was soft; not one sharp angle to be found! And it had an important purpose, which is that it could hold a lot of baby stuff.

Perfect, right?!

Sort of.

What we quickly realized is that having a large amount of floor space for play time is VERY important. Even before Darah was crawling around, we would shove the storage bench to a corner of the room every day so that Darah could play. Eventually, we asked ourselves why we were constantly moving a piece of furniture, and just let it stay put.

Does it look awesome and totally pull the room together when sitting over to the side? Nope. But I’m in a season of my life where I’d rather have a living room that looks a little bit off than have something that looks picture perfect and also cuts the available play space in half.

The question of where we put our food and drinks and books when we want to hang out in the living does remain unanswered, but I think there are two possible solutions.

1. We could go for something like a cherry console table. That would create a larger surface in the room for holding items. They are meant to go up against a couch or a wall. If we put one behind the couch that would make it very convenient as a place to hold stuff for us (like my iced coffees, because that’s what I’m always drinking!).

2. We could do a magazine end table, either getting a pair or just having one. If we went this route, I’d probably just buy one and then judge for myself if we would get enough use out of a second one to warrant spending the money and taking up the space.

What about you? Are there any pieces of furniture that you are “supposed” to have that you have decided you are better off without? Do you move your coffee table around all the time so the kids can play?

Scholastic’s Goodnight Gorilla and I Stink Review and GIVEAWAY!!!

July 23, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 12 Comments

Scholastic Storybook Treasures has put out two new DVDs in the last month, and we are loving them!!!!

First up, Goodnight Gorilla. This book is so loved by so many children, including my own. In fact, the more I read it, the more I love it, too! It’s not very big on words, but the pictures tell such a vivid and delightful story. Scholastic NAILED THIS BOOK by bringing it to life. Most all of the little fun tidbits you pick up in the story are also found in the video. It even drew my attention to a few details I had not previously noticed!

And let me just tell you about Darah’s reaction. The first time we played Goodnight Gorilla for her on the TV, she talked and squealed the ENTIRE TIME. She alsready knew the story and it tickled her to see that mischievous gorilla moving about. To say this DVD is a hit would be a massive understatement.

Goodnight Gorilla could stand on its own and be completely worthy of purchase, but Scholastic has bundled it with 15 other delightful stories about animals, all in a 3 disc set that retails for $24.95.

The second DVD set is I’m Dirty and I Stink. This is a set of two DVDs, and the title videos are based on books I wasn’t familiar with until getting this set. They are about garbage trucks and are a lot of fun! Darah now runs around the house saying, “I stink!” which totally makes me laugh. The whole set has a lot of transportation-related stories. It’s just perfect for any child with a fascination for things with wheels. This set retails for $19.95. Also, get 20% off your purchase from now until August 31st by entering code NKFB20 at checkout (this is celebrating the launch of the Facebook page!).

Win it!: Two lucky Stuff Parents Need readers will each get one of these DVD sets. The contest will run until August 2nd at 11:59pm EST when a winner will be selected by Random.org. The winner will have 48 hours to respond to winning notification before the prize is forfeited and a new winner is selected. Open to residents of the United States. The Case for Framed Art

July 22, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 3 Comments

Over the next year, I am going to be sharing several posts with you all about framed art: how to select it, how to hang it, how to enjoy it, how to create your own. I’m SO excited about this topic, because I’ll be writing extensively about it from the perspective of someone who is not artistic (AT ALL) and who has previously not made art any sort of a priority at home. In other words, I’m writing not as an art snob, but as a bit of an art skeptic. I’m certainly not anti-art, but I also don’t think about it in my day-to-day life.

About a month ago, Tim and I picked out our first piece of framed art (we have a few other pieces of framed art in our home, but they were wedding gifts, so this is our first selection). First, let me just say that even if you don’t have strong feelings about art, you may be surprised by just how difficult it can be to reach an agreement with someone else on the piece you like the very most! Tim and I went back and forth on several pieces, but did eventually agree on one. I had the most hesitations about it, as I feared that it would be too gloomy. We were going for something peaceful, but the image we selected did have quite a bit of dark colors in it. I was genuinely nervous that I wouldn’t like it when I saw it on the wall.

Ordering a piece of art from Gallery Direct is very simple, though you do have some decisions to make about exactly what you want your art to look like. Do you want a wrapped canvas? If you choose canvas art, do you want a framed canvas? Gallery Direct has excellent videos that show you what the various substrate options are for your art. We watched them all. And we still couldn’t decide what to do!

So I contacted customer service and asked for some advice. They were WONDERFUL and gave me additional information about each look, and that helped me think about the look I wanted and what would look best in our own home. We opted to get our art canvas wrapped and framed. We even got to select the best color frame for the piece.

You guys. Just wait until you see it!

So after we placed our order, I was totally shocked to see that our art was shipped out the very next day. That is unbelievable customer service, because each piece is custom made to your specifications.

Just 3 business days after I placed the order, I found this on my doorstep.

Woah! We knew it was going to be large, but we weren’t quite expecting this! 🙂 The package was expertly wrapped. Your piece comes in a box within a box, and with plenty of bubble wrap. When Tim got to the actual piece of art, he peeked inside. I asked him what he saw. He quoted Howard Carter who discovered King Tut’s tomb by saying, “Wonderful things!”

He was exactly right, folks. Remember, art is not something that I spend a lot of time thinking about or enjoying. I could take or leave a trip to most art museums (except the Lourve…that place is amazing). But we captured my exact feeling when I got my first good look at our new piece. I know I look like I’m hamming it up for the camera, but I promise, the excitement on my face is 100% real!
It’s lovely, isn’t it? Tim and I spent the better part of the day that we hung it up swooning over it. This piece hangs in our bedroom, and it gave a whole new vibe to the place! Our room doesn’t get a lot of natural light, so the picture below shows exactly what I see every day. Even though the lighting in the room isn’t great, the picture still seems to shine!

I am completely, over-the-top bananas about my custom framed art from Gallery Direct. You have to be paying close attention to realize that this is a print and not an original. The look is very professional and polished. This is my very first piece of art that I have picked out on my own, and I’m very surprised by what a positive impact it has had on me. I’m here to tell you that if you’ve never had a large framed piece of art in your home, please consider getting one. I think it is common for us to think about changing the paint color in a room, or getting new drapes or a new bedspread. But not many of us think about what we hang on the walls. Take a look around your house: is there beauty hanging on your walls? A piece of art can do something that all the cute throw pillows in the world just can’t do. It can give you pause as you go about your busy day and make you think, help you remember, and invite you into the world you see on canvas.

GET SOME ART. SERIOUSLY!

HALO SleepSack Swaddle Review and GIVEAWAY!!!

July 21, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 3 Comments

Do you think that Snuggies are the original wearable blanket?

Nope! That honor goes to the HALO SleepSack Wearable Blanket! 🙂 SleepSacks are these really awesome wearable blankets for babies. One of my nieces wore SleepSacks religiously as a baby, as they kept her nice and warm. And most importantly, they kept her very safe as they eliminate loose blankets in the crib to help prevent SIDS!

We had some SleepSacks for Darah, but they were honestly never a hit. She was such a fan of the swaddle that the SleepSack was just too loose around her legs for her comfort. She was very used to be snug as a bug in a rug!

So I was intrigued when I learned that HALO had created the SleepSack Swaddle. I had the opportunity to check it out, and while I don’t have a baby to put in it, I still had a few initial observations.

1. It looks very easy to use. Swaddling does have a bit of a learning curve when you do it the old fashioned way, but this swaddler looks extremely intuitive. That’s a great thing for a nervous new parent!

2. I’m not convinced that a newborn would love it, as it leaves the legs covered but not cocooned, which is what I found to be the real reason that babies love to be swaddled. In some ways it mimics being inside the womb – all warm and cozy! But the HALO SleepSack Swaddle does keep the arms close to the baby’s body which is very comforting.

I did spend some time on the HALO website learning about why they designed their swaddler this way, and I came away with some surprising information that really has me thinking. They state that many parents wrap their babies too tightly and this can actually cause hip dysplasia after birth. Their hips need to have freedom of movement and their knees need to be able to extend. There’s no doubt in my mind that we wrapped Darah up very tightly, and for many, MANY months. This gives me pause to wonder if there really is such a thing as swaddling too tight!

How we swaddled Darah is water under the bridge, and I’m not going to waste time worrying about what I cannot change. With that said, when we are ready to have another baby, I’ll be doing more research on this issue and also looking to the HALO SleepSack Swaddle blanket as a viable swaddling option.

Buy it!: The HALO SleepSack Swaddle is available at many fine retailers, including Target, Amazon and Babies R Us. The SleepSack Swaddle retails for $26.95.

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win a HALO SleepSack Swaddle in your choice of size! The contest will run until July 31st at 11:59pm EST when a winner will be selected via Random.org. Getting Your Kids Organized: Part II!

July 21, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

This is the second post in the guest post series from Julie Bestry. If you missed the first post, click here to get caught up (totally worth your time, I promise!).

Make Organizing Fun

Mary Poppins was right about that spoonful of sugar! If you make organizing fun, kids will enjoy mastering new skills. Get them involved in the game. Play an organizing version of Beat The Clock. When it’s clean-up time, play a kazoo to signal the start of the game, or put on silly, upbeat music to get them to pick up as many things as possible that don’t belong in a given room before the music ends.

Keep a small basket at the bottom of the stairs for items that belong on the upper floor, and make it a rule than nobody goes upstairs without carrying the basket (or, for little ones, carrying something from the basket) and putting it away. If anyone is caught ascending the stairs empty-handed, even Mom or Dad, they can’t pass Go or collect $200. Retu

rn to the starting position!

Put Some Structure In The Day

Although everyone likes novelty, children get particular enjoyment and comfort out of fulfilled expectations. That’s why they like hearing the same books read to them over and over. Using reliability, ritual and repetition in creating structure in the daily schedule gives children a sense of security.

Adults have structure in their workdays – appointments, regular meetings, deadlines, etc. Children have planned blocks of time at school, governed by the clock and the ringing of the bell. Carrying that structure over to family time means that meals should be at approximately the same time most nights, that kids need well-lit desks or tables at which they can do their homework daily (without having to move Mom’s hobby items) and that everyone has a reasonable expectation of “what comes next” in their evening rituals.

Kids (and parents) will feel more relaxed if they aren’t over-scheduled with after-school activities. Just as parents need downtime between walking in the door and cooking dinner, kids need a break at the end of the academic day to blow of steam, have a healthy snack and play. Create (and verbally call attention to) buffer time — make clutter-clearing time part of the schoolwork-to-dinner transition or into a post-dinner ritual.

Escape The Toy Box Jungle

Most children have far too many toys to keep them all in one bin or chest. (Smaller toys will fall to the bottom, never to be seen again.) Sturdy, low shelves allow easier access to larger games, puzzles and toys. Canvas or plastic bins (or even dollar-store dishpans) can work like drawers, sliding on and off the shelves. Laundry-style bins and baskets work well for storing stuffed animals, dolls and larger toys.

(Picture from Darah’s room. We turned a bookshelf on its side to make it just the right height for Darah. And we added some bins on top so that she could take out and put away her stuffed animals all by herself)

Older kids can make good use of stackable plastic drawers. And be sure to make the “One in, One out” rule part of the toy parade. If children know that to get a new toy they’ll have to relinquish older, perhaps no longer age-appropriate toys, they’ll come to understand that space isn’t unlimited. (And it’s good for Moms and Dads to be reminded of this for their own possessions.)

Create A Miniature School Room

Create a quiet, comfortable dedicated study area, and make sure that necessary resources (like dictionaries or computers) are close at hand. Set aside a drawer or shelf for school supplies to eliminate the possibility of students getting distracted from their studies by long, circuitous, Family Circus-style journeys to find a pencil sharpener.

For elementary school students, a simple in-tray may be enough to handle papers, but middle- and high-school students will need a basic filing system to manage incoming paper. A simple desk-top filing box or filing crate, plus sturdy hanging folders and 1/3 cut file folders in your child’s favorite colors, will work well to separate the individual courses and paper types (notes, handouts, quizzes, etc.)

Time Management Sometimes Means Saying “No”

Parents aren’t super-people—they can only handle so much: work, car-pooling, playing bake-sale gourmet and a few other tasks before getting worn out. Kids are the same way. Rather than signing them up for everything that interests them, limit activities to one sport or music lesson and one other club or activity per week. If they handle these well and keep their grades and energy up, they can increase their play-loads later in the year.

Just because there are a dozen activities that interest kids doesn’t mean they can participate in all of them, just like they can’t eat all the options at the candy counter. Help them learn to be judicious and select what will give them the most joy.

Be a Rocket Scientist and a Time Traveler

Most people think mornings begin when the alarm clock rings. In actuality, to successfully launch your family out the door for a great, organized day, build a launch pad the night before.

Establish some time between dinner and bedtime every night for creating a launch pad area for the next day, then time travel to the next morning to help your children think contextually about what they’ll need throughout the day. With your kids, gather up everything they need for school the next morning and place it all by the door they’ll exit: book bags with homework and notebooks, lunch money, permission slips, gym bags and musical instruments. If something won’t be ready until the next day, like a packed lunch or an art project, place a note on top of the book bag to remind them to grab it.

For younger children, build the launch pad while doing a running commentary of what you’re doing and why, so little ones get a sense of the meaning behind your activity. Re-stock the diaper bag, fill a tote with toddler books…and place anything you need to take with you on the launch pad. (Mom and Dad can use the launch pad too, for their keys and briefcases!)

Lay out clothes for the next day (from undies and matching socks to outfits and shoes) to make dressing quick and fuss-free the next morning. Chaos ensues if you ask a pre-schooler “What do you want to wear?” Instead, give a choice of two options: “Would you like to wear the blue fuzzy sweater or the pink turtleneck?” Grant independence but avoid the paralysis of too many options.

Demystify Organizing To Be A Role Model

“Do as I say, not as I do” doesn’t work, as children strive from the earliest ages to imitate their parents. So, if you have a habit of dumping the mail on the kitchen counter and not getting around to opening it for a few days, instructing kids to pick up bookbags from where they’ve dropped them may seem arbitrary. Maintain a calendar and check it daily to make sure upcoming events or appointments are remembered, required supplies or outfits are ready, and no conflicts have been scheduled. Let kids see and ask questions about the items on the calendar.

Finally, it’s not enough to be organized; explain to your children, in terms of outcomes, why organization is important. The idea of clutter being aesthetically displeasing won’t persuade the typical first-grader. Instead, focus on how disorganization can make you late for birthday parties. Talk about how buying new glasses to replace lost ones means less money to buy toys or go to movies. If kids understand how disorganization can adversely impact them, they’ll be more eager to cut the clutter, too.

Team Umizoomi Teaches Basic Math Concepts (GIVEAWAY!!!)

July 20, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 147 Comments

Isn’t teaching a toddler so much fun? I think so! Just the other day, I taught Darah about her pinky (pinkie?) finger. She thought the name was hilarious, and brought it up at least a dozen times throughout the day.

I find these teachable moments are everywhere, and I am having a great time helping little D understand concepts that are more and more complex. But one area where I fear I am not doing the best job of teaching is with math. I’m not as quick to pick up on those moments to teach basic math concepts (and those moments really are plentiful once you stop to think about it). So I’ve been on the lookout for some material that can help me out.

Nickelodeon, believe it or not, has actually just launched a preschool math kit. It’s based on their very popular series, Team Umizoomi. Since we don’t have cable, I’d never heard of this show prior to doing this review. Evidently the series shows small children how to solve real-life problems using math skills (perhaps helping to address the question, “When will I ever use this?” at an early age!).

The Team Umizoomi Math Kit includes all of the following:

  • 48-page workbook that amplifies the curriculum covered in each episode, setting up problems and providing opportunities for practice and repetition
  • 24-page storybook that invites kids to join Team Umizoomi on a math adventure
  • 24 Mighty Math Mission Cards – portable cards that provide math-based challenges for kids
  • 48-page activity book that reinforces math skills through simple games and activities
  • Team Umizoomi episode on DVD

We have not watched the DVD yet, as I get the sense that it is a bit more fast-paced than what I allow Darah to watch. As she pushes past the 2 year mark, I’ll test the waters with it a bit to see if it holds her interest. I have found the workbooks to be really cool. Some of the concepts are beyond Darah’s level at this point, but some of the activities we are able to do right now! And they are giving me great ideas about things I can point out to Darah in our day-to-day life, as well.

If you have a little one who is gearing up for pre-school, I think this is a good enrichment option. They are available exclusively at Toys “R” Us (or can be purchased online) and retail for $19.99 each (there are 3 different kits).

By the way, can you believe that Nickelodeon is 32 years old? That is nuts!

Win it!: One Stuff Parents Need reader will win a Team Umizoomi Preschool Math Kit! The contest will run until July 30th at 11:59pm EST when a winner will be selected using Random.org. The winner will have 48 hours to respond to winning notification before the prize is forfeited and a new winner is selected. Open to residents of the United States. Limit one entrant per household, please.

Mandatory entry: Share a tip for helping a toddler learn about math!

My answer: Don’t forget to count backwards as well as forwards! Darah isn’t yet able to count backwards, but she pays very close attention whenever I do it!

To Market, To Market to Buy a New Grill

July 20, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 2 Comments

Now that we have the grill-theft issue handled thanks to our new flexible lock, I am going to start watching the end of summer sales for a great price on a BBQ with a lot of features. I’m not sure if we’ll get one, but I know for sure that the time to get one for the best price is in the next two or 3 months!

But oh my gosh, where in the world do I even start? I confess, I don’t know a thing about outdoor grills. Just by browsing around, the Camp Chef outdoor camp oven caught my eye. It looks like an oven! But it’s for outside! Cool!
And it is cool. But we don’t camp. So that’s not the thing I need to purchase. See how easy it is for me to go off on a tangent and then buy the totally wrong thing?
What about a gas grill? I noticed some Weber gas grills on sale already. They sure do look sharp. But what are the reasons to choose gas over charcoal? I have no idea…
Fabulous readers, can you offer me any advice? It would be so nice to pick something out for Tim as a surprise. When it comes to stuff like this, I never do the selecting because I don’t know what I’m doing. But you can help me change that! If you have a grill, what do you have? Would you buy the same grill again if you had to do it over? Any tips for me? I know I’m shopping at the right time, but that doesn’t mean it is impossible to make a bad purchase!
Thanks for your help!
