There’s Still Time for Great Mother’s Day Gifts at a Great Price (Groupon Goods to the Rescue)

April 30, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Thanks to my friends over at Groupon Goods for partnering with me today and putting together this great list of fabulous gift ideas that are also smokin’ hot deals. I’d love to hear what you are hoping for this Mother’s Day!

Mother’s day is just around the corner and we couldn’t think of a better gift than something that makes kid wrangling just a tad easier. Moms are super heroes, event planners, and need to have the agility of professional athletes.  They also deserve a serious break. Give a gift of sanity this mother’s day and remember moms want to be cool too. These gifts are mom and kid proof- no returns necessary.

Carry All Tote

Diaper bags can be a drag to a mom’s shoulders and to their style but if they have to tote around the world, make it a cute tote.  Reboot their style with a tote that can double as a carry all and a stylish accessory. They will have room for toys, snacks, and a little street style. The size will let them haul all of their non-negotiables- and of course everyone else’s too.

Sneakers

Running after little ones can seem like an 18-year free gym membership. Moms need the best support they can get without forgoing style. Sneakers are great but who has time to tie the laces or wants the bulkiness of a running shoe?

Try these Nylon slip-ons or no-tie Converses for a shoe that is worthy of a space in mom’s closet and also their daily half-marathon.

Watch

Keeping track of their schedule and their kids schedule can leave mom with a major headache. When iCal isn’t enough, try a time-piece that can keep a busy mom on track. It’s an easy basic they’ll always have with them that will keep mom feeling stylish and on time for the school carpool. This is the best way to work jewelry into a mom’s practical lifestyle and give her a gift that will be for both her and the kids.

Creating an Art Area for Children (Affordably): What Worked for Us

April 29, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

Affiliate links included. I only promote what rocks my world, and this definitely did!

Over the last few weeks I have been reading two ebooks that were sent my way for review, and that I assumed would give me maybe a few interesting nuggets of wisdom.

But I was mistaken, these two ebooks, which are both about creating a space in your home that invites creativity to come out and play, have actually been quite transformative for me, personally, and for my girls.

art supplies storage

The first ebook is called The New Playroom, and whether you have space the size of a shoe box, an entire room, or anything in between, this ebook will give you great ideas on how to create a space for your child where they can feel encouraged to be a little maker.

As I was reading through the book, thinking about carving out a little nook somewhere for my kids, I was particularly struck by a piece of advice the author, Megan, offered. She cautioned against putting your child’s art space in a tucked away corner or anywhere that would be far away from the action in the house, as that’s honestly where kids want to be.

This gave me a lot of pause, because I was thinking about using a little corner in a back room for the art area. And then I turned my attention to our living room, which is part of an open area that also houses the dining room and the kitchen. It is certainly the heartbeat of the house. And in that area I have a piece of furniture with clear doors that houses crystal vases and fancy serving pieces. They are lovely items, but they are very rarely used. And yet, they are taking up some of the best real estate in the house. I decided on the spot that I would be changing that, and making my home more functional for the kids. We moved around a bunch of furniture, made a few purchases, and came up with this work-in-progress.

art area 10

Let’s zoom in closer on the containers I was able to find for the art area. In the ebook, one of the recommendations was to give a bit of forethought to how you wanted the space you are making to come together. Having too much variety in your storage elements could lend itself to a chaotic look, so one suggestion was to look for clear items, and to look for more natural color schemes. There are also examples of more colorful options that are done well, but the clear/natural look appealed most to me.

I will admit that I was a bit skeptical at the suggestion in The New Playroom that many storage items could be found a a thrift store. I LOVE shopping at thrift stores, and try to make it to my favorite store here in town once a month, if possible. But I know all too well how hit-or-miss they can be. And the options at The Container Store, pretty though they are, can really start to add up fast. So I found myself asking if I had more time or more money to put into the project. In this case, I opted for taking more time, and I hauled myself to the thrift store, assuming that I’d need to make multiple trips over the next few months to scrape together what I needed.

art area 6 But I was wrong, because I actually had remarkably good luck on my first run, scoring a clear cookie jar ($6) and a clear pasta jar ($4) that now hold crayons and markers.

I also found this see through genie bottle!

art area 5 Does anyone know what this is supposed to hold? I thought it would be fun to hold our small supply of yarn. Also, it was $1, and I just couldn’t pass up a funky glass container for a buck! I scored the turquoise plastic bin (it actually came as a set of 2) for $1 at Family Dollar. It holds our ribbon and washi tape.

art area 9 My final thrift store find was this wooden salad bowl for $4. It is now the holder of all the glue (and yes, we have a ridiculous number of glue dots).

I did make some purchases on Amazon, as well. I thought the prices I paid were fair, especially since they included NOT having to leave my house and go from store to store hunting similar items.

art area 2

The Boon Stash was probably my favorite purchase. At $19.99, I thought it was an affordable and visually appealing way to store a variety of items that might otherwise proove tricky to house effectively. Because my daughters now have easy access to their paint brushes, they are asking to paint much more often. They are also doing more mixed media projects thanks to the googly eyes, beads and the cut out shapes.  This is an item that I’m really glad I purchased, so if you are on the fence, I say go for it!

art area 4

I also purchased these acrylic containers ($19.99 for a set of 4). They were bigger than I thought they would be, although that’s my fault, as the dimensions are listed. But once I started adding stuff to them, I was actually glad for the size. They do come in smaller sizes, though.

art area 8

And finally I decided to get salt shakers to hold glitter. I got a dozen for under $8, which I thought was fair. I saw a similar idea online somewhere (can’t remember where…just check Pinterest and you’ll see it in a few places!). The glitter we have so far is just from The Dollar Tree. I prefer to have a wide variety of colors, rather than buying the larger containers of glitter that only have 1 color. That’s just me, though!

art area 7 For the rest of the storage, I honestly just looked around my house for some things to use. This pretty basket was holding my scarves, and perhaps in some ways that is a better use of it, but I’m very glad to have all the drawing and construction paper housed nice and neat in one area, instead of scattered everywhere like how it used to be. In the end, it was a reasonable trade.

art area 1

We also moved a folding desk area that used to be tucked away in a corner, and because of the location it used to be in, it was NEVER USED. We still need to do some clean up with the television wires, but already this desk is seeing some action! Layah loves to use it when she is doing some intense marker work, especially.

Both Tim and I agree that since we moved the art supplies to a space where the girls can see them and easily access them, the amount of time that is spent “doing art” in our home has quadrupled (and that’s a conservative estimate).

Megan also has an ebook that gives you 30 days of Invitations to Create and I VERY strongly recommend this ebook for anyone out there who is not especially good at coming up with these types of ideas. I royally stink at it, so having a picture and a list of items to lay out on a tray for my kids is extremely useful to me. Not every invitation to play has been a hit with my girls, but each one has gotten some response, and some of them have been very well received. They have also helped me to develop some new ideas about ways we can interact with our arts and crafts supplies to do some cool new stuff.

I absolutely LOVED both of these ebooks, and for me, they have made a very significant difference in how my home looks and feels, and especially how my girls feel in this space. As we look toward summer (just a few weeks away for us!) I am not nearly as anxious about the kids being out of school as I usually am. I feel much more equipped with fun things to do around the house!

Our Plan for Teaching Our 5-Year-Old to Swim

April 29, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

This post brought to you by Stearns Puddle Jumpers®. The content and opinions expressed below are that of Stuff Parents Need.

Darah, our 5 1/2 year old, has been enrolled in swimming lessons on two separate occasions. We’ve been enrolling her in group lessons, which were realistic for our budget (coming in around $6/class). The down side to group lessons is that your kid doesn’t actually get to spend much time practicing swimming. She might get a grand total of 7 or 8 minutes active swimming time because she has to wait her turn while every other child practices.

All this is to say, we have a child who is still doesn’t know how to swim. And I have noticed that we are starting to venture into territory where she feels much more uncertain and scared in the water. She used to be fearless! The time to act is right now. We have a very clear goal to have a swimmer in our house by the end of the summer.

 photo puddle jumper 1_zpsh27cfawh.jpg

We will be enrolling Darah in semi-private lessons and then in private lessons if needed. We are also going to be doing a lot of work on our own before those lessons start to help her increase her confidence and practice the skills she has already learned in the water. One of the items in our pool bag is the Stearns Puddle Jumper. This is a Coast Guard approved flotation device, and it is also a confidence booster for Darah.

 photo puddle jumper 2_zpsgmbcnp3l.jpg

When we took Darah to the pool this weekend, we explained to her that her Puddle Jumper would serve as a buddy of sorts while she is working on her swimming skills. At first, she was not too sure about whether or not the Puddle Jumper could help her.

photo puddle jumper 3_zpspjjqex0e.jpg That fear we have been battling surfaced immediately, and she didn’t want to let go of a grown up. So we talked a bit more about the importance of relaxing and trusting yourself in the water, and letting the Puddle Jumper be a support element. We started saying, “Trust my Puddle Jumper. Trust my body” over and over. And before you know it, she believed that her Puddle Jumper could help her stay afloat! photo puddle jumper 6_zpsoccpx7qj.jpg Once she felt secure in the water, we started working on paddling/kicking skills. This is where we started to really have some fun! photo puddle jumper 4_zpsygahmxps.jpg What a HUGE boost it was to her confidence for Darah to get herself from point A to point B by swimming! photo puddle jumper 5_zpsptubx9ur.jpg Darah asked if we could go swimming again the very next day. This is a big difference from earlier this month, when she would get a bit frustrated/reluctant at the suggestion of a trip to the swimming pool. Stearns Puddle Jumpers are exactly what we needed at this stage in the process of learning how to swim. We can push forward now with more technique work and with increasing confidence in the water!

You can find Puddle Jumpers and other flotation devices at StearnsFlotation.com.

Outfit provided for review consideration. All thoughts and opinions are my own. We are happy FabKids customers!

My little tiny baby bird is just about to turn 3. And friends, if these past couple of years are any indication, then what a mighty 3 she will be!

She has the sweetest, most demure given name, but her spirit is much closer to a great ball of fire, indeed!

And so, isn’t this the perfect little party dress for the occasion?

fabkids fire dress 2

It’s the princess fire dress, and it’s available for $29.95 for FabKids VIP members (and it also comes with black leggings, not pictured). FabKids is an online clothing store for boys and girls, sizes 2T-12. You can shop a la carte directly from the website, or you can snag great discounts by joining the VIP program, which we have happily been members of for close to a year now!

The VIP program is SUPER easy and not at all scary, because you have complete freedom to make a purchase or not every month. On the first of each month, you get an email letting you know that new items are in the store for you to check out. If you see something you like, select it and it ships to you for $29.95, which is a discount over the retail price on the website. If you don’t see anything you want or need, or if the budget just doesn’t allow for a new outfit that month, you simply skip that month by the 5th of the month. You don’t have to call in; it’s a simple, easy to find section of the website where you click to skip.

Even though they send you reminders, should you forget to skip AND forget to select an outfit, you will be charged $29.95 and you will have a credit on the site to use any time you like. I have a few credits waiting for me, and I actually love having them, because sometimes FabKids will come out with a brand new outfit mid-month that I love and I can just snap it up on the spot!

Teaching Children Coopertive Skills Through Games: Dinosaur Escape

April 24, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

Thanks to Peaceable Kingdom for providing product for review consideration. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

My girls both seem to have an affinity for board games. Little Layah has been eagerly playing the likes of Candy Land for almost a year now, and she’s still just shy of 3! Darah’s interest developed right around the same time last year, only she was 4 1/2. It has been a little bit tricky finding games that both girls can successfully play, but we’ve certainly found some over the past year.

One of the things that has become very obvious to me, though, is that the older child is more focused on who is going to win, and therefore, who is going to lose. We have had MANY lessons on good sportsmanship during our board game sessions, and we now end every game with shaking hands and congratulating the winner, as well as every other player on a good game. This strategy has been helpful!

But I have still been on the search for a game that didn’t focus on “every kid for herself” and on being the first or the best as an individual. Oh, and it still needs to be fun (sorry…I’ve found quite a few very dull “cooperative” games out there). Dinosaur Escape has been the game I’ve been looking for, friends!

dinosaur escape cooperative game 1

Dinosaur Escape allows every player (2-4 at a time can join in) to participate in the same goal: get the dinosaurs safely to dinosaur island before the volcano erupts! The volcano is noted as one face on the dice, and every time it gets rolled, one more piece of the volcano is built. Meanwhile, players work to move the dinosaurs out of the deserts and to uncover the coins that have the dinosaurs on the other side of them. That’s the ticket to dinosaur island. But watch out for the T-Rex! If he gets uncovered, all dinos have to move back to the desert and work their way back to the other terrains.

dinosaur escape cooperative game 2

The game has an element of memory to it, but all players can work together to try to remember the locations of various cards. My kids aren’t able to remember all of the rules without an adult present, but as long as we are on hand, they do a great job of playing. I do have to remind them that they don’t “own” any of the dinosaurs and that they can move any one that they want, and that it is a game where either they will both win or the volcano will win. Since it is such a break from the norm with games, it is taking a while for that to sink in, but when they win, they do celebrate together. I love having a game in our stash that focuses on teamwork! And they ask to play this one frequently, which tells me that they are very intrigued by it and find it to be fun.

This is a game I’d definitely recommend, especially if you’d like to have a game that’s not as likely to induce feelings of competitiveness between siblings. You can purchase it online for $17.99.

I’d love to hear if you have another cooperative game that you’d recommend to others!

The Tooth Fairy Pillow for Your Child’s “Mighty Twenty”

April 22, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Product provided for review consideration. All thoughts, opinions, and eager little girls are my own.

Last week Darah, out of nowhere, had this to say over breakfast: “It’s no fair, mom!” When I asked her what wasn’t fair (thinking she was going to tell me that her sister’s bagel was half a centimeter larger than hers, or something similar), she further explained. She said, “I’m the ONLY kindergartner in my class who hasn’t lost a tooth yet! When is it gonna be MY turn?”

Oh, what a bittersweet moment I had right then! It was one of the first times that Darah has expressed frustration at still being “little” and an eagerness to get to be big. She later said, “I can’t wait to have all my grown up teeth, because then I’ll be grown up!”

Slow down, little one!

Still, the moment made me realize that she really is going to start losing her teeth soon, and I need to have a plan together for maximum tooth fairy success. Mighty Twenty is a company I recently connected with, and they are all about celebrating the journey that Darah can’t wait to be on! There are twenty baby teeth that kids will lose over the course of several years, and Mighty Twenty wants to celebrate every step (or rather, tooth) along the way.

mighty twenty tooth fairy pillow 1
Mighty Twenty offers a fun variety of pillows perfect for the tooth fairy to easily spot, complete with a special pocket in the front for the tooth, and a larger pocket in the back for the tooth tracker journal.
mighty twenty tooth fairy pillow 2
I love the journal aspect so that you can easily keep up with the dates that teeth are lost. I think I have a chart like this in a baby book…somewhere…yeah, the odds aren’t good that I’ll remember to update that. But this little journal, which is conveniently located in the back pocket of the pillow, has a darn good chance of getting filled out!
mighty twenty tooth fairy pillow 3
Additionally, Mighty Twenty has a fun videos that are perfect for kids who are about to start losing teeth or who are currently snaggle-toothed! They offer a fun way to help kids who might be hesitant about losing teeth to feel more connected with other kids who have gone through it.
I really love that Mighty Twenty is celebrating losing teeth for what it really is: a developmental milestone of life! You can shop online for Mighty Twenty products, including the pillow and journal set featured here ($29.95). Or you can check the list of retailers to see if you have a local option (shout out to Genevieve Bond, here in Chattanooga!).
Do you have any special rituals related to losing teeth? Anyone want to tell me the going rate for a tooth these days?

My Favorite Deal of the Year! Ultimate Homemaking Bundle (99 eBooks for 97% Off!)

April 21, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Affiliate links included. You better believe I’ve already bought this amazing deal! And I couldn’t keep it to myself! 🙂

If I knew it wouldn’t give you a headache (or exaserbate the headache you may already have) then I would be banging pots and pans loudly right now to get your attention. I want to show you what I purchased as a Mother’s Day gift to myself, because I’m going to ask for some time to get to read through the books during my special day, and that means PEACE AND QUIET!!! 🙂

mother's day gift peace and quiet

Friends, right now there is a crazy/awesome/ridiculously good deal happening, and it has overstressed, overworked mamas like us in mind. It’s called the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle, and for $29.97 (which is the price of a new hardcover book), you get access to over 99 eBooks all about issues related to homemaking.

Do you need to be a stay-at-home mom for this to be relevant? Of course not! Many of the topics covered are relevant to all adults: we’ve all got to clean and plan meals and then prepare them. If we are married, that’s a whole other type of work we have to tend to. And we’ve got to manage our households. Throw kids in the mix, with their schedules, their messes and their developmental needs and you’ve got a heck of a lot of work that isn’t necessarily intuitive.

I can’t tell you how many times I have said aloud, “I have NO idea what I’m doing!”.

The Ultimate Homemaking Bundle provides a true treasure trove of resources for those of us in the trenches of managing the household. You’ll find countless tips and tools that can help you do your work smarter, not harder. And just as importantly, you’ll find something I crave so much as a busy mama….hearing that, “me, too!” from another mom. That goes SO far in helping me know that I’m not in this alone, and that I’m not the only one making it up as she goes. You’ll find healthy doses of encouragement in this bundle, friend.

So with this bundle you get 99 eBooks (click here for the list!). But friends, that’s not all!!! Oh no! Not even close! You also get audio courses, printables and an AMAZING list of free bonus offers (and I promise, I’m not talking about the kind of bonus offers that nobody actually wants…I saw a free kid’s arts and craft box, a free online craft class, free meal planning subscription, etc. Good, good stuff!).

 Topics

You may be wondering exactly what topics are covered in the bundle. You’ll find great materials in each of the following categories:

  • Cleaning
  • DIY
  • Faith
  • Faith for Kids
  •  Finances
  • Food: Cookbooks
  • Food: Meal Plans & In the Kitchen
  • Holidays
  • Homeschooling
  • Marriage
  • Motherhood
  • Organizing
  • Planners & Printables
  • Pregnancy & Babies
  • Self-Care
  • Working from Home

Great list, right? But what if some of the topics don’t apply or simply don’t appeal to you? I would say that first and foremost, even if you only really like 2 or 3 of the eBooks you read, you’re already getting a deal. I predict you’ll like at least 30, though! AND…I also have learned that if there is an eBook in your bundle that you know you won’t read, you can GIFT that particular title to a friend. Is that awesome, or what?! So if your kids are already grown up, for example, and have little ones of their own, you might gift the titles specific to children to one of your kids! Or if you have a good friend who is expecting, send along the pregnancy titles to her.

The value of the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle exceeds $1200. What an AMAZING deal for $29.97!

ultimate bundlejpg

Friends, this is one to trust me on. It’s a killer deal and I am confident that you are going to be so glad that you snagged it! It’s only available until 11:59pm EST on Monday, April 27th, so the time is now to jump on it. I missed one of these bundles last year because I thought I’d remember to go back and buy it, and of course I forgot and I STILL regret it!

Attention Bloggers!

And if you are a blogger and would really like to spread the word to your readers about this bundle, consider filling out an application to become an affiliate. They let you know super fast if you are approved since the sale is SO quick!

Y’all want to see me get madder than a wet hen? And over something that is probably not worthy of my level of outrage? Thought so! Check out my review of the April 2015 Beauty Box 5 offerings in the video below:

You guys, I honestly do love this subscription box. It’s like a fun, affordable little surprise in the mail every month. You can order month-by-month, but the best deal is the year subscription for $99, which equals just $8.75/box shipped to you. You can’t expect to love everything, all the time, but I think that’s understandable. And besides, if you don’t like something you can always post a YouTube video where you pitch a fit about your over-abundance of lip products and sound like a brat! 😉

The Little Black Dress for 2015: Mine Has Pockets!

April 14, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 4 Comments

Dress provided for review consideration. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always. Affiliate links may be included at no cost to you.

One of the things on our 2015 vision board is to go on more dates. That means that I actually need to have a dress that doesn’t date back to 2010, when I last worked in an office setting and therefore couldn’t rock yoga pants 24/7.

I turned to eShakti to find a dress that might serve multiple purposes (date night, a memorial service, media events) and I was definitely not disappointed. I got exactly what I was looking for in this leafy vine embellished crepe dress and I got it customized so that it would fit me just right.

eshakti dress 3

The fit-and-flare look flatters my figure, so I started with that silhouette in mind. Then I customized this dress in a few ways. I believe its default pattern is to hit in between the knee an the ankle. This is a really bad look for a short, curvy figure, because it just cuts you off. So I told eShakti my height and asked that the dress be knee-length for me (knee-length for someone who is 5 foot 10 is different, hence the need to specify how tall I am).

eShakti dress 2

I also had these sweet little sleeves added. I thought it made the dress a touch more conservative and season-less, which is what I wanted. I thought it turned out great!

eShakti dress 1

And finally, I went for pockets, which I LOVE SO MUCH! Dresses with pockets are so smart and so practical. I was thrilled to be able to include that in the order.

But here’s the thing I want you to know: adding in all these customized elements was as simple as entering a little bit of information and clicking some options. You don’t have to be an amateur dress designer to come up with something that will work for you. eShakti walks you through the process and makes it simple to get what will work best for you. Also, customizing is just an additional $7.50 fee, which is crazy affordable. The dress I got, for example is currently on sale for $71.95 and if you customize it, the price goes up to $79.45. That’s pretty much paying an off-the-rack price for a custom dress. I don’t think you can beat that price!

I definitely recommend that you give eShakti a try the next time you find yourself in need of a dress. You’ll be able to find a look that fits you like a glove! Want to learn more about the brand? Connect with them on Facebook, Pinterest & Instagram.
