The Fashion Subscription Box for Girls: Our Kidpik Experience

October 12, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

I’ve been treating myself to the occasional Stitch Fix box (ok…22 of them) for the past 3 years now and have really enjoyed getting a curated collection of clothes to try out, hassle-free. My 7-year-old has asked me the last few times I’ve gotten one in the mail when she could get her own Stitch Fix.

Well, a company called Kidpik is available now to respond to that desire from children to get their own carefully selected styles to try out. We were invited to head over to the website and fill out a style profile for Darah (she got a huge kick out of getting to share her thoughts and opinions on style), Based on the profile we filled out, we were told to expect a box of goodies in the mail shortly with perfect piks for Miss D.

You guys, she started asking THE NEXT DAY if the box had arrived and asked me pretty much every day after that until it actually came!

The very first thing we noticed when we opened Darah’s Kidpik is that everything in the box coordinated beautifully. As a Stitch Fix customer, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy at how everything could mix and match…I wish my boxes could offer that to help me build a better capsule wardrobe!

Darah noticed the color palette in the box, too, and immediately began to lay out each piece on the floor, and then started putting together different outfit options like she was working on a puzzle. It delighted her to get to play stylist for a bit, and soon after she was ready to try everything on. These are the outfit combinations she chose.

First, those jeans, y’all! To be honest, I was surprised to see denim in the collection because in the profile we noted that Darah doesn’t wear jeans at all (she’s ALL about the leggings and owns ZERO pairs of jeans). But D and I both swooned over these jeans. They are, in a word, perfect. They have a lot of stretch, they have a snap button which Darah liked, and the pattern doesn’t look anything like jeans (I think Darah finds jeans to be terribly boring, and these are anything but).

The shirt is also fantastic, with gold and white sequins spelling out, “Love.” It is her style to a T. She paired it (and every other outfit) with her brand new booties that were in the box. They are maybe 1/2 a size too big but I think she’ll be able to comfortably wear them quickly…like within 2 or 3 months (you know how kids’ feet grow like weeds!). In this shot you’ll also notice a fun bracelet, which was sent along as a freebie. I get the impression that every box has some sort of free gift included.

This next outfit was probably Darah’s favorite. When she put it together, she told me it was her Girl Scout outfit, explaining that it reminds her of the song we sing at the end of our troop meetings (make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other’s gold). The dress actually has a bit of shimmer in the fabric, which amps up the wow factor for it, and the gold jacket just tickled Darah to pieces. It’s also a bit on the large side for her, but Darah is super duper petite (and also a bit sensitive about it, so she prefers to wear size 7 clothing even though she fits better in size 6, and we did request size 7 from KidPik….so the size thing isn’t their fault!).

The final outfit was this fun quilted teal dress that has tons of shimmer throughout it. It’s a very cool fabric that I’ve never seen before, and Darah said it made her feel like a mermaid. Again, it was a little big on her but it was just what we requested, and she loved the dress and wore it for the rest of the evening after we were done with our fashion shoot. The headband shown above was also in our Kidpik and she has worn it almost every day to school since she received it.

So in our box we received 2 dresses, 1 shirt, 1 jacket, 1 pair of booties and a headband. You can purchase items a la carte, but the savings are quite significant if you just buy the whole box (you’ll get 30% off!). The total for everything we received at the 30% off price was $105, and I thought that was reasonable, especially considering the fact that it provides so many mix-and-match options that can help make getting ready in the morning that much easier for kids.

And as for getting Darah’s style right, they definitely nailed it. She loves shimmer and shine and pretty colors. I’ve gone online to see the piks for other kids in other reviews and they really do send a wide variety of looks and styles (for example, if your daughter never wants to wear dresses or doesn’t like shimmer that’s not going to be a problem…mine just happens to love them!).

Kidpik offers a variety of purchase options, from a one-time box all the way up to one box per month. I think the option I like the most is to get 4 boxes per year, 1 being delivered each season.

Do you think your daughter would enjoy a Kidpik? Definitely give them a try, if so! They offer styling in sizes 4-14.
