Weekend Pick: Merry Christmas, Splat!

December 7, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 3 Comments

If you are looking for some quality Christmas shows for the kids, I have a recommendation for you! Scolastic Storybook Treasures has just released Merry Christmas Splat…And More Winter Stories. We were sent a copy for review, and we loved it!

This is a fun 37 minute DVD that brings 3 different delightful books to life on video.

MerryChristmasSplatSSTDVD

Merry Christmas, Splat is first up, and it is about an adorable cat named Splat who is trying sooo hard to be good before Santa comes. He’s got his hopes up for some special presents. Darah can definitely relate to this story line, and has already watched it 4 times!

Next is Fletcher and the Snowflake Christmas. Fletcher is very concerned that Santa might have trouble finding his home with all the snow that has fallen! This story has prompted a good conversation between Darah and me about how Santa handles different situations (for example, how does he come to our house since we don’t have a fireplace?).

Snowflake Bentley tells the true story of a boy in Vermont who loved snowflakes so much that he studied them very carefully. This was a favorite of mine, as it reminded me of just what a marvel snowflakes really are!

Finally, Owl Moon, which is narrated by the author, Jane Yolen (a favorite of ours! She wrote How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight!). This story is about a special search by a father and daughter through the woods at night for the Great Horned Owl.

The video is suitable for ages 3 and up and is the perfect DVD to purchase in anticipation of the upcoming winter school break! Amazon’s currently got it at a discounted price of $13.46.

Personalized Kids Jewelry from Isabelle Grace

December 5, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 2 Comments

Our 18-month-old daughter absolutely adores bracelets and necklaces. She could easily spend 30 minutes (a lifetime in the world of a toddler) taking them off and on, and then putting them on her stuffed animals. It is not unusual for Tim and I to find ourselves adorned with her baubles and gems on a daily basis, as well.

layah's jewelry design

Since her big sister is going to be getting that awesome John Hardy find I made at Unclaimed Baggage in the fall, I thought it might be nice for little Layah to have a special piece of her own.

But finding jewelry, especially nice jewelry, that is made for little ones is really hard! Don’t even get me started on the epic quests I go on for screw-back earrings for my girls.

So when I learned that Isabelle Grace Jewelry had a line of silver bracelets in sizes to fit wee wrists, I was thrilled! They sent me a Lovely Hearts bracelet to showcase. Lovely, indeed!

isabelle grace personalized jewelry for kids

The Lovely Hearts line has options for bracelets or necklaces. You can customize your piece by selecting the initial you would like stamped on the heart, and by selecting from 6 different Swarovski accent gems.

Additionally, they offer 4 different sizes for the bracelets, and recommended age ranges that start at 9 months and go all the way up to 16 years.

Isabelle Grace has 13 different pieces in the Just for Kids section of the website. How refreshing to find some many adorable options! Now I’ve just got to convince them to start carrying earrings (screwback, of course!).

If you are searching for something special for a little girl this holiday season, do take a look at the offerings at Isabelle Grace. The Lovely Hearts necklace we reviewed is nicely priced at $45.

Is anyone on your shopping list getting jewelry this year? And please tell me I’m not the only one who struggles to find kids jewelry!

I’m going to be heading over to UBC on December 14th, as that will be Santa Shoppe Day. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there, and there will be pictures and ornament decorating for the kids offered absolutely FREE! I don’t know about you, but the Santa pictures at the mall here are around $30, so I’m feeling pretty excited about spending $0 on them! I’ve also got the inside scoop that there’s going to be another surprise character on hand for the kids (can’t let the cat out of the bag, but it’s a good one!).

Universal Studios Without Kids: In a Word, AWESOME!

December 3, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 11 Comments

You may recall that last month Tim and I had our very first vacation without our girls by our side. we spent our first two nights at Loews Pacific Resort on the Universal Studios property and were treated to tickets to Universal Studios. Definitely check out my review on what it is like to stay on site at Universal. I had no idea that was even a possibility, and now that I’ve experienced it, I wouldn’t recommend that you do it any other way. The perks are fabulous!

Experiencing the Park Without Kids

Ok, so back to Universal Studios! Are you a bit surprised that as a 33 year old I went there with my husband and without our kids? I know, theme parks sort of scream “FAMILY DESTINATION!” and I wouldn’t argue with you about that. I think it would be a fantastic place to take my kids. But I would also say that it is a great choice without them! Think about it: you get to do exactly what you want, eat what you want, and skip over anything that just doesn’t interest you. There is A LOT of joy to be had in being in charge of your “fun destiny”, friends.

Make It Rain!

So my first tip for you would be to see if you can figure out a way to make it rain all day in Orlando for your visit. Rainy day = quiet park! And if you are old like me, you LOVE when all those whipper snappers aren’t crawling all over you, getting in your personal space, and interrupting your views of the foliage. Only half kidding, and you totally feel me on that one, so don’t lie…

universal studios in the rain

Yep, it rained from the time we set foot into the park until about an hour before we left. And it was glorious! November rain in Orlando is NOT cold, but actually quite refreshing! Just get yourself a poncho and go on about your way. I think the longest line I personally noticed was 15 minutes, and most of the lines are under some sort of cover, anyway!

Look Around!

Since you don’t have children pulling at your shirt and dragging you all over the park at lightning speed, you can take a moment to take in the scenery at the park. And friends, it is magnificent!

universal studios scenery

I’m telling you, around every corner you’ll find something that makes you squeal with delight or gasp in awe. The attention to detail that you’ll find in the parks, and especially in Islands of Adventure, will be something you won’t forget for a long time. And without the kids around, you’ll be able to snap more photos as keepsakes!

Get Ready to Scream!

The rides, y’all.

THE RIDES!!!!

I was screaming and laughing so much throughout the day! The rides are absolutely incredible, with many of them combining 3-D effects with motion. Now I will tell you up front, if you get motion sickness easily, you would be well-served to bring those wrist bands for motion sickness. I did fine, but Tim actually had to bow out of the park when we still had about 2 hours left to play. Good thing it was only a 10 minute walk back to the hotel!

universal studios rides Ok, so in my time in the park I got to ride quite a few things. The one I didn’t get to ride that is at the top of my list for next time was Jurassic Park (the splash up above is the grand finale of that one!). From what I did ride, though, here are my top 3 favorites:

#3. Spider-Man. What an AWESOME ride, you guys! You get to do some serious villian-fighting in this 3-D motion thriller. In my pod, there were 3 grown men sitting behind me, and they would shriek with delight every time a new comic book character came on the screen. Honestly, it was a highlight of my day just hearing how thrilled they were. They all turned back into 10-year-old boys, even if only for 5 minutes.

#2. The Mummy. This is an indoor roller coaster, and it doesn’t go upside-down. But OMG it is SOOOOO scary, and in the best possible way! Tim and I both screamed and screamed the whole time, and just when we were about to laugh, we’d start screaming again. This was the ride that as soon as I got off of it I said, “I want to do it again!!!” I was certain that nothing in the park would top that experience.

And then we headed over here…

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

universal harry potter collage

And this is pretty much when my happiness meter just went off the charts. First, I treated myself to some butter beer. It sort of tastes like a butterscotch cream soda. Very sweet, but very delicious! And then I just marveled at all the detail. You guys, it was just beyond amazing. The fact that it was drizzly and gray made it even more perfect! Tim has read all the books and I have dutifully watched all the movies (hey, I can’t blog AND read!). But I will admit to you that walking around this part of the park did make me think that perhaps I should start carving out the time to read the books.

Or to re-watch the movies. Just keepin’ it real.

And this all brings me to my #1 favorite ride at both parks:

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. This is the ride in the castle. The ride is so much more than just the ride, too. From the time you step in line, you are having an experience. There are various scenes that you get to watch while you wait for your turn. It feels very much like you really are walking through Hogwarts! It is, simply put, the best line-waiting experience I have ever had. Well done, Universal Studios!

And the ride, itself. Oh boy! This is the one that actually did Tim in. You are in a little pod that will move around as you ride through various scenes, attempting to join the quidditch match that is taking place between Slithering and Gryffindor. Let’s just say things go a little off course! Oh you guys. It was just the best!!!! And as much as I loved The Mummy, the next time I get to go to Universal Studios, I’m heading straight over to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. And next time, I’m not leaving without one of their beautiful wands!

Our children aren’t old enough yet to be familiar with Harry Potter, so it was actually quite awesome to have the time there without them. We could geek out without boring our children (though I can’t imagine they’d be bored…the place is so magical!). And we were also able to go on the rides without taking turns holding the kids, who would be too small for most of the things we went on. Speaking of which, if you do ever go with small kids, Universal does have a great child swap program. No, you don’t swap children, but parents do get to hang back with the kids while the other parent goes on the ride, and then when they return, it is the other parent’s turn. No waiting in line twice!

All in all, I would definitely recommend a trip to the park, even without the kids. We play with our kids daily, but it is so much fun to have a day just to play with your spouse!

Have you ever been to Universal Studios in Orlando? I want to hear about your favorite parts!!! Let’s geek out about it together!! 🙂

Easy Weeknight Meals Without Ordering Takeout!

November 30, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 3 Comments

Chinese takeout is my weakness. When I’ve had a really hard day, I ask for Chinese takeout. When I’ve had an especially exhilarating day, I ask for Chinese takeout. When the thought of getting the freshly cleaned kitchen dirty makes me sick to my stomach, we order Chinese. And when the kitchen is simply too filthy to cook in, well, you know where this is headed.

Chinese food is super tasty, super filling (well, for an hour, at least), and relatively cheap. But it is still a budget buster for us if we spring for it more than once a month.

I’ve thought before about trying to learn how to make it myself, and on the whole, my attempts have been lackluster. What I can never seem to nail down is the sweet and savory sauces that I love so much.

But I’ve been trying out Panda Brand Ready Sauces, which were sent to me for review, and I’m totally sold on them. I will be re-stocking my kitchen with them as soon as I run out, no doubt about it. I have never before had a product get me so close to the real deal. Close enough that I’m willing to save money and make it myself (except for when the kitchen is too dirty…don’t judge).

panda brand ready sauces

Last week, for example, I was staring down the clock at 4:30 with absolutely no dinner plan (we eat around 5…yeah, we’re old like that). I then grabbed the Lettuce Wrap sauce, since I knew I had some leafy greens on hand and some chicken, and went to work.

Why did I choose it? Well, first, because I wanted to order Chinese takeout (obviously!). But second, because I noticed this:

panda 3

I got my ingredients ready (of course I was missing half of them, so I substituted!) and in just a few minutes, I had this!

panda lettuce wraps

And let me just tell you, it was finger lickin’! Sweet as can be, but free of high fructose corn syrup (yay!). Also free of MSG and preservatives.

The Panda Brand Ready Sauces are just the latest in a large line of products in the Lee Kum Kee family that you should definitely check out. You can pair your Ready Sauces meal with some Annie Chun’s rice and round out the meal without having to spend any extra time cooking…it is designed to be ready FAST!

Today my family is heading back home from our Thanksgiving fun, and I can promise you this: I’ll be in the mood for Chinese food when we get home, and I WON’T be ordering takeout this time! 🙂

What’s your favorite Chinese food dish? Have you tried these sauces yet? Let me know!

Hello Kitty 13.5″ Doll!

November 29, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 3 Comments

Want to see something ridiculously cute that just came in the mail?

Check this out!

hello kitty doll 1

I mean, c’mon. Cuteness overload!

Hello Kitty, which has been an iconic symbol of childhood ever since I was a little girl, myself, has just been released for the first time ever as a posable doll. She stands at 13.5 inches tall and has removable fashions so she can be dressed. She can also stand, sit and do various poses.

My only complaint about the doll is the variety of “styles” that she comes in. Options include dancer (shown above), princess, best friend and pop star. I’ll be the first to tell you that my daughter wanted the princess doll as soon as she saw a picture of it, but still, I find the options to be quite limiting, and to further enforce the idea that these are the only things for little girls to strive to become.

hello kitty doll 2

But I’m not going to blame the Hello Kitty Doll for the problems of the toy industry. That would hardly be fair. And admittedly, she is really fun to play with (yes, I have already had several tea parties with Miss Kitty). Both my toddler and my preschool enjoy toting her around quite a bit! And if you have a Hello Kitty fan in your house who loves to play with dolls as well, then you pretty much can’t get a better present than this one. She retails for $24.99 though at the time of this writing, was significantly higher on Amazon, which tells me she must be a bit hard to find this holiday season. Good luck, friends!

Thanks to Blip Toys for sending the doll our way for review!

Orbit Gum for Kids: Bring on the Smiles

November 27, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 2 Comments

So a while back I wrote about how much Tim and I like Orbit gum, and about how we are a house divided on whether or not our 4-year-old should be allowed to chew it. Tim thinks she is old enough to handle the responsibility (meaning the proper chewing and not swallowing of the product, and the proper disposal of it). Me? I’m not so sure.

So the folks at Orbit reached out to me to let me know that they actually have a gum designed just for kids. Now they can’t promise that this gum won’t get stuck in the carpet or in Darah’s hair (I would so totally buy that gum if they made it, though!). But they did have some interesting things to tell me about it. They sent me some information and some samples to check out.

Orbit for Kids prioritizes helping keep mouths healthy. The gum is sugar-free, and did you know that chewing sugar-free gum can actually be good for you? It will increase saliva flow which helps protect teeth from decay, as well as clears the mouth of food debris. I had no idea! This makes it really good to have as an after dinner snack when we are away from home. Also, it tastes yummy!

I captured the look on Darah’s face when I presented her with this gum, and then told her that it was just for kids, which meant that she gets to chew it.

orbit gum for kids

And you know what? So far, she’s done an excellent job of being responsible with her gum! She chews on it for about 5 minutes, and then she goes over to the trash can and spits it out! I’m impressed, I have to say.

And just look at that face? Santa’s most definitely going to be putting Orbit for Kids in her stocking this year!

What about you? When did you start letting your kids chew gum? Did you know that sugar-free gum has all these benefits?
