(Giveaway!) Special Occasion Outfits Online: The Beauty of Strasburg Children

August 4, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 4 Comments

Complimentary product provided for review purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

My very first baby is about to turn 6. What a milestone for her to get to reach! It’s only been the blink of an eye, really, and yet she has been 100 different versions of herself as she has grown and changed over the past 72 months.

Special occasions, like birthdays or holidays, sometimes warrant a special dress. This year we are going to do some special photographs with Darah in this exquisite, yet simple, dress from Strasburg Children.

strasburg children 1

I love everything about the Lace Morning Gown. It isn’t fussy or uncomfortable in any way. It’s 100% cotton, in fact, so it’s quite soft and easy to wear. And yet, the crocheted lace details makes the dress an heirloom piece. It is the perfect look for capturing that innocence and joy of childhood…the fun of being 6. It will be passed on to Layah and then to the girls’ younger cousin, and then it will be carefully packed away for grandbabies that won’t be on the scene for another few decades. The dress is just that special, and just that timeless.

strasburg children 2

Strasburg Children is an exceptional destination in Nashville, (as well as online for the rest of us!) that offers those special occasion dresses you look for when planning photo sessions, school pictures, birthday shots, christenings or other special occasions. They have pieces with incredible detail that you will be sure to appreciate, because this level of quality and care is becoming very difficult to find.

The price points for clothing at Strasburg Children is on the high end, but right now there’s a sale, and shockingly, this dress Darah is modeling is under $50! For real!!! You’ll find lots of other great deals happening right now so be sure to take a look around and see if you can find something extra special for your little girl.

strasburg children's 3

Because I can promise you this: when you look back on your pictures, you’ll wish you’d taken more (that’s really saying something coming from a blogger!). And you’ll wish you’d captured more of those blissful moments of childhood.

Win it!: One very lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win the dress of your choice from the Summer Collection! EEE!!!

(Giveaway!) Happy, Healthy Heinz: Organic Ketchup from the Best!

July 29, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 4 Comments

Thanks to Heinz for providing products and a fun experience for my family. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

My interest in “greening” my home really started 6 years ago when my oldest was born. It has been a work in progress, and to be honest, one of the last things to get my attention has been food. I just assumed that it would be too hard and too expensive to offer my family organic choices. The hard part really isn’t true, especially over the last few years as organic options have started popping up on my every aisle of even conventional grocery stores, but the expensive part is (mostly). But the more I learn about the importance of organic food to our diet, the more I am convinced that the extra expense is definitely worth it.

But ketchup has been a sticking point for me. I have tried at least 3 different organic ketchup brands and they have all been, well, not nearly as good as Heinz. Heinz has been the measuring stick because it is, in my personal opinion, the best ketchup on the market.

And then I learned about this amaing product:

heinz organic ketchup 1

I had no idea that Heinz had an organic ketchup! All I needed to do was give it a proper taste test to see if my ketchup woes had ended. So thanks to Heinz, we put on a little back porch barbecue to give this ketchup a chance to perform.

While our organic hot dogs, okra and onions were cooking, we did some tomato seed planting in a cute little container bag meant for tomatoes.

heinz 2

This was a great way to talk more with the girls about where our food comes from and what the difference is between organic and non-organic produce. We already have a small herb garden that the girls take care of, and they take immense pride in knowing that their herbs are in a dish I have prepared. In fact, they are more likely to eat it! 🙂

heinz 3

So by getting our kids connected to the growing process and by encouraging an appreciation of how good food reaches our table. we hope we are instilling core values that they will carry with them throughout their lives.

We grilled okra for the first time (just thread them on skewers) and also grilled up an onion, both of which came from our CSA basket this week.

Heinz 5

And then we were ready to put Heinz Organic Ketchup to the test! I love putting a slice of avocado on my hot dogs. It’s a healthy alternative to mayo but still gives you that nice, creamy texture. Definitely try it!

heinz 6

It was good. It was actually SO good that I grabbed the bottle of ketchup to start reading the ingredients, because I was convinced that High Fructose Corn Syrup had to be lurking in the ingredient list in order to produce such a spot-on “Heinz” taste. But look for yourself!

heinz 4

Heinz has a 26 ounce container of their organic ketchup, which is a family-friendly size. They have the same size now availabile for their Simply Heinz Ketchup, which doesn’t contain organic products, but it does contain real sugar and a streamlined ingredient list. You can also find Heinz No Salt Tomato Ketchup and Heinz Reduced Sugar Ketchup. I am so impressed with the line of products this company has created for the conscious consumer!

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win three VIP Heinz Tomato Ketchup coupons (for 3 free bottles!). You can select the right Heinz Ketchup for your family, or even try them all!

(Giveaway!) Art Lessons for Kids at Home: Home Art Studio

July 24, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 86 Comments

Complimentary products provided for review purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

Can I share with you one of the things that has made me the most uncomfortable as a parent? It’s art.

I know….many of you are going to think that’s completely ridiculous. With all the things out there to be petrified of as a parent, I’m going to get all nervous about art?!

But I have a feeling that somewhere out there, there are people reading this who are giving me a, “Me, too!” Somewhere along the way, and early on in my life, I decided that I wasn’t any good at art, and so I quit challenging myself and I pretty much avoided art if at all humanly possible. This is why people see art I have created with my girls and instantly assume that it was the 5-year-old who made it. Not kidding.

See?!

Creepy craft time! ? #artishardforme #notcrafty

A photo posted by Tiffany (@stuffparentsneed) on Jul 21, 2015 at 12:48pm PDT

Here’s the deal, though: I REALLY don’t want my kids to develop the same fear I have of art, and I know that part of how I will keep that from happening is by making art a part of our daily lives. I have created an art space in our home which has been WONDERFUL because it keeps our materials easy to access. We have been doing art much more frequently since making that shift, so I highly recommend keeping your art suplies visible. Even with these changes, though, I still get very overwhelmed as I look through Pinterest for fun new art ideas. I’m never quite sure what is age appropriate or if the instructions are detailed enough for me to follow (8 times out of 10 they aren’t!). art curriculum 1 And this is where the Home Art Studio comes in. I absolutely LOVE this program, you guys! Each DVD is designed to provide art curriculum for the school year (perhaps roughly 1 new lesson every 2 weeks).  Ms. Volin serves as your art teacher and walks you through the steps to make your art. Since you are watching a DVD, it is easy to pause or even rewind if you need to see a step again. art curriculum 2 Darah and I have been working through the Kindergarten DVD this summer as a way to help increase her confidence and her art skills. And yeah, as a way to increase mine, too. That’s right, friends: I’m working my way through kindergarten art. And no, it’s not too easy for me. The lessons are challenging to Darah, as well, but they are certainly doable, especially with an adult on hand to help explain things. This wouldn’t be the kind of thing you’d sit your 6-year-old in front of and then leave the room while it played. art curriculum 3 You, as the parent, also get lesson plans for each activity (they come on the DVD) so that you can know which supplies you need ahead of time and you can prepare the space for the lesson. Speaking of supplies, you can also buy everything you need for each year’s curriculum through the website, or you can simply pick and choose which items you might need based on your current art supply inventory. It is really nice having exactly what the art teacher in the video is using for her projects on hand, and I didn’t have to head to the dreaded craft supply store to try to figure it out myself. So I highly recommend that if you get one these DVDs you at least look over the supply list and see what you might want to buy. The prices are reasonable. 🙂 art curriculum 4 My time spent with Darah working on these art lessons has been absolutely precious to me. We’ve really bonded over our lessons! I’m there to encourage her when she gets frustrated and she truly beams with pride when she steps back and realizes that she finished a project. We have art hanging up all over the house now! Darah has even taken to hanging up the art I made in my room, which totally makes me smile. She wants me to be proud of my work, too! 🙂 I am planning on buying the first grade Home Art Studio DVD once we are finished with the Kindergarten set. This is some truly fantastic material, whether you are homeschooling or simply seeking some enrichment opportunities. It is doing wonders for my daughter, and it’s doing wonders for me, too. First grade art, here I come! 😉

Win it! One VERY lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win the entire Home Art Studion curriculum collection (DVDs for K-5, which is a $180 value!). You can work your way through them with your kids or grandkids, and then pass them on to someone else to enjoy. It’s like a gift that keeps on giving!

(Giveaway!) Great Outdoor Games to Check Out This Summer

July 16, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

Samples provided for review purposes. All opinions are my own, as always.

This summer I have noticed that my girls seem to have developed an interest in games with rules when they are outside. They will create obstacle courses or even dance routines that they have to be able to repeat perfectly before they can move on to the next challenge. We’ve drawn hopscotch on our driveway for them, which has been immensely popular. And we’ve also introduced two new games to the girls: lawn bowling and cornhole.

One Step Ahead offers both of these fun activities, and I’m excited to show them to you!

First up, let’s check out cornhole!

cornhole 1

These are SO fun, friends! They are super lightweight and come apart easily (maybe a little too easily, as I’m currently missing one of the support legs due to my girls playing with them like pirate swords!). They have oversized holes to make scoring a bit easier for kids (or you can use Layah’s strategy and stand right on top of the platform to help your odds). It comes with 2 platforms so that 2 people can play at one time. I really love this game because it’s one that grown ups want to play, too. I think that makes it absolutely perfect for summer barbecues or birthday parties, or even just for play dates (this is a very eay game to toss in your trunk and take with you to a friend’s house).

cornhole 2

We’re working on our underhand toss and our overhead toss with cornhole. And we’re working on taking a moment to think about your toss before you make it. Such a great game! 🙂

The other game that the girls are loving right now is lawn bowling. And I have yet to find an outdoor game that makes my girls squeal with delight as much as this one does!

lawn bowling

Parents, you need to know this: the lawn bowling set does NOT come with magical elves who will blow up your giant bowling ball and pins for you. That’s totally on you. You’ve been warned…

The pain was TOTALLY worth the gain, though! I mean, who doesn’t like to hurl a giant ball at some giant pins? Major stress reliever, I’m telling you!

lawn bowling 3

Something to keep in mind is that this game doesn’t play well with the wind. The pins are quite sensitive, so you’ll need to pick a wind-free day to play outside. I can tell you from personal experience that moving the game inside isn’t a great idea unless if you are going to be playing in a room with anything in it that can’t handle a giant flying bowling ball coming at it. 😉

lawn bowling 2 We are really enjoying both of these outdoor games. I think adding either one (or both) to your outdoor toy collection would be a wise choice, as my kids have been playing with them both daily for two weeks with no signs of boredom!

Want more outdoor game ideas? I’ve got my eye on the One Step Ahead animal croquet set and the giant inflatable honeycomb ball! 🙂

Win it!
TWO lucky Stuff Parents Need readers will win a fabulous outdoor toy by One Step Ahead. One winner will receive the Cornhole game, and one winner will receive the Lawn Bowling game.

(Giveaway!) 5 Ways to Raise a Reader

July 9, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 40 Comments

Friends I hope you enjoy this informative guest post today from my friend Rebekah Gienapp, who serves as a Barefoot Books Ambassador. She has so many great ideas!

Who doesn’t want their children to love to read? Here are my top tips for what you can do at home to raise a reader. You may be pleased to see that you’re doing many of these things already. And if you’re not? They’re easy to implement!

5 ways to raise a reader

Be a role model. Let your child see you reading for pleasure. If we tell our kids how much fun reading is, but they never see us doing it, will they believe us? Maybe you only get time to read after the kids are in bed. If that’s the case, be sure to tell them a little about the book you’re enjoying when they’re awake. If you tend to read on an electronic device, tell your kids when you’re reading a book (otherwise they may assume you’re just checking Facebook again.) Finally, encourage the men in your children’s lives to also model reading. Since so many early childhood teachers are women and read aloud at home is often done by moms, kids can get the mistaken idea that reading is just for girls.

Do everything you can to make reading enjoyable. One of the best ways to help children associate books with feelings of warmth and love is to read to babies from birth, as the American Association of Pediatrics recommends. (If you haven’t started daily read aloud time to your child yet, there’s no time like the present!) Tell your children often how much you love reading to them. Find a cozy place to make a special reading nook. Read aloud is your child’s first theater, so make it interesting by using voices and expression. If your children are not interested in a particular book, don’t force it on them. Sometimes you may have to put up with a book you really don’t like because your child does. As Maya Angelou once said, “Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.”

Make sure your child has plenty of reading material at home and can easily access it. Research shows that having access to a variety of reading material is key to keeping kids’ minds sharp, especially over the summer months. Types of books to have on hand include rhyming books, singalongs, folk or fairytales, picture storybooks, nonfiction, wordless books, world culture books, and books that incorporate math and science concepts. Keep your children’s books on low shelves or in boxes where they can reach them without asking for help.

Read (and re-tell) the story again and again. If you’ve raised a toddler, you may have banged your head against the wall when she asked you to read the same book for the 89th time. While it can get a little boring for us, reading things over and over helps young children reinforce the concepts they are learning. Everything in the world is still new to a young child; it takes a while to absorb it all! For beginning readers, encourage them to read a book for a second or third time after they’ve completed it. This aids in their comprehension as well as increase their reading speed. For children of all ages, use fun ways to re-tell the story to you. You can use simple art activities, act it out with puppets, have them tell a story using a wordless book, or let them dictate the story to you with a new ending.

Help your young reader move up to the next level. Once your child has begun reading on his own, select a book that’s just slightly above his current reading level. Begin reading it aloud to him. During his next designated time to read on his own (bedtime or whenever you’ve chosen) offer him the choice of continuing to read the book you were reading aloud, or to pick something on his own. Often once you’ve gotten a child interested, he’ll want to continue even if it’s more challenging than what he’s used to.

(Giveaway!) Anchored: One of the Best Books I’ve Read

July 2, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 58 Comments

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I also purchased a copy of this book on my own to pass on. Because it’s just that good, people. Affiliate links may be included. #AnchoredHope

Yesterday was a banner day for my friend Kayla Aimee, as it was the official launch day of her first book, Anchored.

AnchoredBonusPrint1

I completely devoured my copy that arrived early, and honestly, the speed with which I read through it surprised me a bit. This is because I was slightly afraid to read it.

You see, Anchored is the story of Kayla’s start to motherhood, when her daughter was born at just 25 weeks gestation. She was a micro-preemie, and she spent 156 days in the NICU before finally getting to come home. It’s a hard story, obviously. And I don’t really do “hard” stories that are about children. I just have a SUPER low tolerance for them and find myself all too quickly dissolved into a pile of mush and heartbroken by proxy. So my coping strategy is to simply avoid reading those sad stories. It’s not brave of me, but it is a way I have found that helps me not fall apart on the daily from all the sadness in the world.

But Kayla tells a tale that feels painful, absolutely, but that is also helpful and even healing for anyone who has gone through something tough (and haven’t we all?). I cried quite a few tears while reading. Some were for baby Scarlette, and some were for Kayla, and some, as it turns out, were for me. It’s quite a gift an author has to have to tell such a story and help you feel part of it at the same time. Kayla does this, and she does it well.

Also? You’ll be very surprised by how often you laugh while reading the book! And not the polite type of pseudo-fake laughing. I’m talking about big belly laughs. Kayla is a riot, and the type of person who is especially prone to having awkward things happen to her, and she shares those moments of the absurd with you because it’s simply part of who she is.

It’s the book I have enjoyed the most in quite a long time. I’m even reading it out loud to my husband now. I hope you will enter my giveaway below for a free copy. But I also hope you will BUY a copy; it would be an AMAZING gift to give to your nearest hospital with a NICU, or to share with a friend. You don’t have to have a preemie, or even be a parent for this story to resonate with you. If you’ve ever turned to God with the question, “WHY?!?!” then you will be able to relate.

Win it!:

One Stuff Parents Need reader will win a copy of Anchored!

Let’s keep this simple: to enter, simply leave a comment, including your email address (so I can contact you!) telling me your favorite book (could be a favorite recent read OR your all-time favorite book!). That’s it!

Contest open to residents of the United States, ages 18 and up. Limit one entry per household, please. Contest ends at 11:59pm EST on July 16th and a winner will be randomly selected from eligible entries received. Winner will have 48 hours to respond to winning notification via email before an alternate winner is selected. Stuff Parents Need is not responsible for prize fulfillment.

(Giveaway!) A New Way to Rock Your Iced Coffee at Home: Folgers Iced Cafe

June 29, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 9 Comments

I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Folgers. I received a promotional item to thank me for my participation.

Fellow iced coffee afficianados, lean in a little closer, because I’ve got something super exciting to share with you and I don’t want you to miss a single drop of this goodness.

Folgers has just dropped the mic, so to speak, in the world of iced coffee. Check these out!

folgers iced cafe 3

You are looking at products. These are tiny (purse-size! easy to travel with!) containers of 100% coffee extract, with no sugar or preservatives. Just add two squeezes to a cup of cold milk, stir it, and BOOM! iced coffee at the ready for you.

You can choose from Original Latte, Vanilla Latte, Caramel Macchiato and Hazelnut Latte. I’ve tried everything but the Vanilla Latte so far, and I have loved them all! I have done lots and lots of experimenting with different ways to make iced coffee at home, and this is definitely the fastest way to go without purchasing the pre-made stuff that has more chemicals than I’d prefer.

folgers iced cafe 1

AND! I SO love that I can put this in my purse. I’ve been at play dates before where the other mom doesn’t drink coffee at all, and so no coffee for me. Now I could just ask for a glass of milk, though, and be all set!

If you work in an office setting, how perfect are these for your desk?! They won’t take up precious space in the work room refrigerator (and possibly get consumed by others!) but will instead be safely tucked away in your office for your coffee break.

#FolgersFridays

If you aren’t already following Folgers on Facebook and Twitter, take a moment to do so now because they are doing an amazing summer promotion from now through September 4th called #FolgersFridays. Each Friday they have AWESOME prizes (a gift basket worth $200!) that they are giving away, and you enter by leaving a simple comment on their #FolgersFridays post that day.

(Giveaway!) TOMY Inside-Out Plushes!!!!

June 24, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 134 Comments

Tim took the girls to the box office smash of the summer last weekend. Yes, I’m talking about Disney Pixar’s Inside Out! My little loves were jumping up and down with excitement to get to have a special movie date with their daddy. And just in case the movie had some scary scenes (and Tim said it did, by the way), they were rockin’ some brand new lovies. Check out the TOMY Disney Pixar Inside Out Talking Plush!

inside out 2

This is Joy!

inside out 3

And this is Sadness. The main characters in the movies are actually the emotions of a little girl named Riley. They are Riley’s advisors and guides throughout her daily life. Things get a little out of control for Joy, Riley’s chief emotion, when a cross-country move happens. Tim reported back that it’s a fantastic film with lots of great conversation starters about feelings. I can’t wait to see it on DVD!

The girl each gravitated toward a different plush, with Darah claiming Sadness and Layah claiming Joy. So it was absolutely hilarious to me when my husband texted this shot from the theater, as the girls are modeling the opposite behaviors of their dolls!

inside out 1

It turns out that little Layah didn’t want her own seat, but instead wanted to sit in her daddy’s lap the whole time. Which she did, all with a big smile on her face!

Here’s the entire line of TOMY’s plush figures for Inside Out. Aren’t they awesome?! From left to right you’ll see Joy, Anger, Sadness, Disgust and Fear.

These toys each talk and say several different phrases whern you squeeze on of their hands. They are so much fun and really help bring a great movie to life at home. They are available online for $19.99 each.

Win it!

One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader is going to win TWO fabulous Inside Out Talking Plushes by TOMY (fulfilled randomly, which makes for a fun surprise!).

4 Ways to Clean Up the Air in Your House

June 24, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 35 Comments

Thanks to Airfree for providing a review sample and a giveaway item. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

Since I work from home, I spend A LOT of time inside these four walls. My kids are also inside a lot since the summer temps have been too hot to safely play outside for over a week now, with no signs of cooling off in sight.

Do you ever wonder just how clean the air is inside your home? Chances are that it could use some improvement, and there are some pretty darn easy ways to clean up your air and breathe a little easier while inside.

how to clean the air inside your home

1. Protect Your Bedding

Bed bugs and mites and all sorts of nasy things take up residence on our bodies, like it or not. And the bed is where many millions of them go to die, as well as to reproduce. UGH!!!! You can keep these microscopic critters from building up in your home and contributing to congestion by using mattress protectors and pillow protectors that are bug proof. They are easy to find, affordable, and very much worth it. Make sure you have them, friends!

2. Make Use of Technology

Technological innovations have been very impressive when it comes to devices you can put in your home to help rid the air of harmful particles. Airfree has the Onix 3000 that is well-suited for spaces up to 650 sq ft. It uses a little bit of heat in a concentrated area to destroy airborne allergens. You can feel the heat when you get very close to the machine, but you almost have to be touching it to feel it. I have not felt any difference at all in the temperature of a room when the Onix 3000 is on, just FYI. The air that is heated in the device is cooled back down before being released.

airfree onix 3000 1

The Onix 3000 can help guard your home against bacteria, viruses, mildew, mold, dust mite allergens, pet allergens, pollen and tobacco odors. That’s some intense stuff it helps eliminate! All you do is plug the device in and it goes to work. It is completely silent, but does emit a blue light (it actually makes a great night light!).

As a default, our Airfree Onix 3000 sits in the room that serves as our primary entrance to the house, though I will also take it upstairs once a week to let it do its thing up there. 🙂

I LOVE that there are no filters to replace with this particular device. It’s also very lightweight (less than 5 lb) and compact, which makes it easy to make space for and to move around.

airfree onix 3000 2

Want to learn more about how this awesome device works? Click here for details!

3. Ditch Your Chemical “Cleaners”

I totally get it…stuff that smells like bleach smells CLEAN! But friends, the truth is that you are just swapping one set of nasty airborne stuff (germs) for another (toxic chemicals). There are SO many natural alternatives that are effective without compromising your ability to take a deep breath (I’ve got detailed Honest Company reviews on my site; it’s our go-to brand!). If you can’t bear to give everything up at once, commit to making the switch to an eco-friendly (and lung-friendly) alternative as each of your cleaners gets used up.

4. Shoes Off!

My family has gotten in the habit of taking our shoes off once we get in the house (we toss them in a simple wooden crate). It has made a HUGE difference in the amount of dirt that gets on our floors, so there’s definitely a visible difference. I know there’s a difference that my eyes can’t see, too. Also? the shoes are near that Onix 3000, so what lingers on them doesn’t stand a chance!
