Moving Past, “I Might Sell That One Day” and Finally Decluttering!

January 17, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 7 Comments

The Pile

pile of stuff to sell I have a “pile” in my house. Well, ok, I have a lot of piles in my house. But today I’m highlighting one pile in particular. It is a LARGE mass of stuff that my family no longer wants or needs, and that I have been completely unwilling to donate to my local thrift store. And I donate stuff all the time (at least once a month!). So why the reluctance? I’ll tell you why.

The Possibility

Because this stuff MIGHT be worth some money to someone. Maybe. When you are only a (mostly) one income family, tax deductions don’t really help out much. Last year we had over $2,000 worth of donation receipts but still ended up taking the standard deduction over itemizing because it worked out better for us. So unless we’re donating something worth several thousand dollars, we don’t benefit financially from our donations. That doesn’t stop me from taking stuff in regularly, though. But if I believe that an item has value such that the thrift store would ask for $10 or more for it, I’m REALLY reluctant to part ways. I feel like I should find a way to sell the item and get that little bit of money back into the hands of our household.

So I tell myself, “I will sell this on Craigslist or Ebay!”

The Reality

Here’s the reality, though. In Chattanooga, the Craigslist community is NOT vibrant. There just isn’t a lot of action going on, and I’m finding that people often want to pay garage sale prices rather than Craigslist prices. I have been offered $10 for a table that I listed at $50, for example. People also want curbside service even when you state that the buyer is responsible for picking up the item. I’ve been asked to drive 30 miles from my home to drop off a $10 pillow. Which of course, makes absolutely no sense.

As for Ebay, here’s the deal: I’ve purchased quite a few things from Ebay over the years but I have NEVER sold anything. I know that to be successful with your listing you need to have quite a bit of savvy so that you don’t end up paying someone to take your stuff (people sometimes don’t factor in the true weight of what they will be shipping, including the packaging itself, or the fees that go to Ebay AND to Paypal). Basically, I know enough about Ebay to know that it would be a mistake to just snap a picture of my stuff and list it for 99 cents with free shipping.

So “learn how to sell things on Ebay” has been on my to do list for about 3 years. Seriously. And I haven’t gotten around to it, yet. Meanwhile, my “pile” continues to grow, taking up very valuable space in my small home and making me feel guilty and anxious every time I look at it. I just don’t have the time, and honestly, lack the interest to learn all about how to sell stuff on Ebay. Craigslist is also a big time suck. I’ve sold a few things there, but for the most part, my stuff has languished, with no buyers in sight.

The Alternative

Then I learned about a site called Listia. At first I thought it was just like Ebay and I wasn’t interested at all. But then I researched it a bit further and I realized that it is a way to get rid of your stuff without exchanging money. Through Listia, people accrue points on the site by offering up items to the highest point bidder. You don’t have to offer free shipping for your items, but I’ve noticed that the auctions with free shipping tend to do much better. Then you can use the points you have accrued to bid on other items. Obviously, the goal here shouldn’t be to trade your junk for other junk. But it is a way to find new homes for the things you know will be valued and appreciated by someone, and you get to find your own treasures in the process.  Here’s a video that breaks it down for you if you still aren’t clear on how it works:

Why Listia Makes Sense

I finally had a “come to Jesus” meeting with my pile of stuff, and I added up what I thought I could realistically sell everything for on Ebay, Craigslist or a consignment sale. The total was around $250. Now that’s not chump change in my world, but it was really eye-opening to realize how much time and mental energy I have put into trying to sell this stuff and then feeling bad about NOT selling this stuff. It is TOTALLY not worth the $250 I could theoretically earn. Because it will take HOURS AND HOURS and lots of research to be able to successfully sell it all. I’d much rather be doing a million other things with my time AND I’d much rather have the space this pile takes up reclaimed in my house.

With Listia, I can “sell” the items in about 10 days. Boom. Done. Over. And then I can treat myself to something fun with the points! Forget about the money, because the pursuit of money for these items is not working out so well for me. Time to let it go!

Your Pile

Do you have a pile like mine? I want to encourage you to go through it and be very realistic about how much you could actually get for the items. Also think about how much time it is going to take you to be able to sell them. Then ask yourself if it is really worth hanging onto all of this stuff and letting it clutter your home while you try to sell it? If so, more power to you. Maybe you can teach me a few things about how to be a power seller in a city without power buyers! But if you reach the same conclusion that I did, maybe you should give Listia a try. All you have to lose is stuff you don’t want anymore. Listia even starts you out with 500 credits so that you can do a little shopping! And if you sign up using the link above, Listia will give you 100 bonus credits in addition to the 500 everyone is offered. Woo hoo!

This post is brought to you buy the wonderful folks at Listia. All opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

White Cloud and Children’s Miracle Network: Teaming Up to Change Lives

January 16, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of White Cloud for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

One of my favorite toilet paper brands is White Cloud. Have you ever tried it? I find it to be really soft and also really affordable. That's the winning combination for me!

But my post today isn't about how great White Cloud toilet paper is. It's about what a great thing the White Cloud company is doing and how you can join in with their efforts.Photobucket

White Cloud has teamed up with Children's Miracle Network, which has 168 children's hospitals all over the United States. They solicited drawings from the children in the hospitals and have narrowed down submissions to 10 inspiring drawings. Now they need the public to vote for the drawing that they most want to see on a limited edition White Cloud facial tissues box. The winning drawing will be on boxes sold exclusively at Walmart stores starting in May. And White Cloud will be making a generous donation to each Children's Miracle Network hospital with winning designs. Isn't that awesome? These hospitals are taking care of our little ones and while I haven't yet had to take my child to a children's hospital, I know the day could very easily come. So I'm happy to see them getting lots of financial support so that they can keep doing what they are doing!

Voters in the contest also have the chance to win. There willb e 3 drawings for a $25 Walmart gift card throughout the voting period (woo hoo!) and at the end of the voting period, 3 grand prize winners will be selected and will receive a one-year supply of White Cloud products.

So how do you enter? Simply Like White Cloud on Facebook and then check out the Voting App. Remember that you can get an additional entry by sharing the sweepstakes with your friends.

In the meantime, if you do want to try out that fabulously soft White Cloud tissue, you can Find a store near you!. Good luck with the giveaway!

Abbreviated rules: No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited. The Children’s Miracle Network Contest and Sweepstakes are sponsored by Kruger Products (USA), Inc. The Contest is open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, between the ages of 4 and 14, who are eligible patients at one of the 168 participating Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. The entry period for the Contest begins on November 29, 2012 and ends on December 28, 2012. The Voter Sweepstakes is open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, 18 years of age or older. Family Dollar Offers an Exclusive Line of Budget Friendly Diapers and Wipes: Kidgets

January 16, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 5 Comments

Give Me Cloth Diapers or Give Me Death???

Most of my readers know by now that I have a little one in diapers (she’s 8 months old now….how did that happen?!?!). And most of you also know that I prefer to put her in cloth diapers. It’s a personal preference and I have no judgment for anyone who uses disposables.

I Use Disposables, Too

Because the truth is, I use disposable about 20% of the time, too. When 3 out of 4 members of my family caught the flu at the same time, I set the cloth diapers aside and went for disposables. When we had family visiting with us for 2 weeks in December, I also went for disposables. And while traveling for the holidays, I left the cloth at home and just went with disposables. In moments like the ones I described above, disposables certainly are more convenient.

Family Dollar Exclusive Diaper

I recently heard about a new wallet-friendly brand of disposable diapers and I decided to do a feature on them because I know many of you out there DO use disposables, whether it be part-time or full-time. And you are also looking for ways to save money (who isn’t?!).

Kidgets size 3 diapers

So I thought you might like to know that is the exclusive retailer of Kidgets diapers and wipes. I’ve been working my way through a 36 count pack of size 3 diapers (priced at just $6.50!) and a 72 count of baby wipes.

Kidgets Scent-Free Wipes

When I was shopping for these products, I was really happy to see that Kidgets offered a fragrance-free wipes option. I grabbed those, as I prefer to keep Layah away from as many chemicals as possible.

Here’s a picture of what the inside of the diaper looks like, for your reference:

Kidgets Diaper Inside

Our Experience

When I first saw the diapers, I thought they looked REALLY thin. Maybe too thin. Fortunately, I had some other disposables on hand from more premium brands and I compared them to each other. That’s when I realized that they really are just as thick as other disposables. Every disposable diaper looks insanely thin to a cloth diapering mama! 🙂

Kidgets Diaper from Family Dollar

I put Layah in these diapers for her active time of day to see if they could withstand lots of crawling and rolling and other types of movement. They stayed on her just fine.

I then put her in a Kidgets diaper for nap time. She’s become a tummy sleeper, so I’m always nervous about how any diaper will do. They passed!

For the ultimate test, I let her sleep overnight in a Kidgets diaper. Still, no problems!

The Kidgets wipes are also really good. While they aren’t as thick as some of the Huggies wipes I have tried, in my opinion they are significantly better than the Walgreens store brand of wipes, which I have also tried. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy these again.

Here’s some additional information on Kidgets Baby Wipes straight from Family Dollar!

Introducing the newest addition to the family of Kidgets products: Kidgets Baby Wipes!

Available exclusively at Family Dollar, Kidgets baby wipes are made with a special three-layer fabric that is Thick, Strong, and Soft!! Available in Unscented and Fresh Scent, they are the perfect addition to your changing table, car, or diaper bag. Convenient press-open lids make on-the-go changes a breeze!

Family Dollar’s line of Kidgets diapers is also second to none. Family Dollar realizes that you want the best for your baby. That’s why they developed Kidgets – a soft, absorbent diaper that’s also a great value. With an ultra absorbent core, strechable grip tabs, and a cloth-like outer core, they are are so sure that you’ll love the Kidgets diaper that they offer a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee!

 – only at Family Dollar!

Your Experience

Have you tried Kidgets diapers or wipes? What did you think? Did you know that Family Dollar has its own brand of diapers? If you use disposables, what brands do you use?

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Family Dollar. My experience is my own.

Your New Diet-Friendly Brownie from Fiber One

January 15, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 219 Comments

Hiding Junk Food

Have you cast aside all your holiday chocolate yet? Making all of mine less accessible has been on my “to do” list for about 3 weeks now. Somehow it seems to be the item that keeps getting bumped to the next day’s list.

All the while, I’m totally eating it. I suppose candy is harder to get to and eat if I’ve ALREADY eaten it, right???

Making the Switch

Fiber One Brownies

But now I feel ok to get the job done, because I’m putting something yummy in its place. I’ve got Fiber One 90 Calorie Brownies. In addition to being a low-calorie dessert option, they also each contain 20% of your daily fiber requirement (5 grams).

I am loving these for several reasons. First, they taste great! I wasn’t really expecting a low calorie, high fiber brownie to delight my taste buds, but I was mistaken. They are delicious and I’m more than happy to swap out my chocolate stash for these.

Fiber One Brownies 2

Second, they are sized right. We Americans have serious portion control issues, and seeing what size of a treat I should be eating is helpful.

Third, these are highly portable. I’ve been sticking them in my purse so that when I’m out running errands and Darah announces that she’s hungry, I’ve got something to give her that will be a special treat for her, and won’t make me feel guilty. Tim also has a stash of these in his drawer at work so he can satisfy a craving for sweets easily.

Fiber One Brownies 3

Are you seeking a sweet treat that you will actually enjoy eating, and that will help you step away from the junk food with ease? I definitely recommend Fiber One Brownies. I’ve only tried the Chocolate Chip (love, love, LOVE them!), but they also offer Peanut Butter and Fudge varieties. Incorporating Fiber One Brownies as part of a weight management plan just makes sense!

I received complimentary products for review purposes from General Mills. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Our Word for 2013: Awakening

January 14, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 7 Comments

Hibernating

I feel so much like I imagine a bear feels after hibernating all winter.

My eyes are stunned by the brightness of daylight around me and the busyness of life. My body is stiff and achy.

But I’m hungry. So very hungry.

bear Photo credit: Rosemary Ratcliff

To say we have been hibernating isn’t accurate in every since of the word. You see, I feel in many ways that the last 3 years have been a season of life that were very busy, indeed, but very focused on one aspect of my life: my family. Elements that were not directly applicable to the survival of my family and to child-rearing, more specifically, had to be set down. Some things I continued to run over and play with for a few minutes every day, whining each time I had to put them back down (such as learning new professional skills via my blog). Time to build and nurture relationships was also extremely tough, though we did make an intentional effort to make Chattanooga feel more like home (our word last year was rooted).

Life on “Pause”

Because we decided to expand our family and add a second child, Tim and I have felt that some aspects of our life have been on “pause” since August of 2011 when we learned we were, indeed, expecting. The latter part of 2011 was consumed with just getting the bare necessities since I was SO sick during about half of my pregnancy. And 2012 was all about prepping for and adjusting to life as a family of 4 (oh, and moving….yeah, we did that 3 weeks before Layah was born and while I was on bed rest). And if I’m being really honest, we’ve probably been feeling this way since moving to Chattanooga in 2010. This is when we left our house behind and became very reluctant landlords (a decision that costs us a few hundred dollars every month). It is when I gave up my full-time job and almost half of our income. I will tell you that making this move was one of the best decisions we ever made. Still, it came with a price.

Spring in the Air

Turning the corner to 2012, when we have no plans to add another child to the family (for good…we are DONE, people!) and no plans to move anywhere, and no plans to do major job changes, well…this year is like that first hint of spring coming. Tim and I are so worn out and so worn thin by our depleted resources and we are so darn hungry for that new season of life.

Perhaps I’m being premature with my word choice. After all, I still have a baby at home and a young preschooler. I won’t be out of the “season of young kids at home” for quite some time. Yet I still feel like the ground beneath us is becoming a bit less frozen for once. And it feels so good.

I’m ready to awaken and to start frolicking a little bit more. I want to enjoy my days a bit more and not simply survive them. I know there will be PLENTY of days this year when I will have to call it good to just keep my head above water, but I expect to have some days where I can actually make some progress on…well…anything. Making progress on ANYTHING will be a move in the right direction this year.

Using Our Word as a Compass

Our word is a great place for us to start when making goals for the year. It is like a compass. But we can’t just choose a word and be done with it. We need to make more specific goals so that we know which areas of our life we are the most eager to get moving on again. For me, I would say the financial area is going to be important this year. We haven’t saved money for retirement since I quit my job, and that just breaks my heart. It is time to work towards changing that as a gift to ourselves and as a gift to our adult children.

Can anyone else out there relate to how I’m feeling this year???

What word are you using to guide you and your family this year? Have you written about it? Feel free to post a link in the comments so I can come read it! Or just share some of your goals and ideas for this year. I’d love to hear about them and encourage you.

Headed Back to the Gym? Get a New Lock for Your New Look! GIVEAWAY!!

January 10, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt · 83 Comments

If you have recently joined a gym (or like me, just started going back to the one where you already have a membership) then this post is for you!

Going to the gym is much less of a hassle when you have a locker to stow away all of your stuff. I’ve experienced not having a locker before and having to pile up all my belongings on the gym floor. Not only is that gross (if you’ve ever seen The Biggest Loser then you know that gym floors are soaked to the brim with sweat), but it is also a distraction. I was always keeping an eye out for my purse as dozens of strangers passed by it. This made it more difficult to stay focused on my pace on the treadmill!

1534D Master Lock might not be the company you first think of to help you achieve your resolution to get in shape, but they do have something that can help you: a fantastic combination lock. I want to encourage you to get one of those lockers at that gym, and to put an awesome Master Lock lock on it. The 1534D is a great choice for a combination padlock. I like that you have a choice of using letters, numbers, symbols or any combination therein. This makes it MUCH more difficult to be cracked, because there are over 25 million combination possibilities.

I also like that the soft touch dials offer a no-slip grip. This is perhaps the feature that makes this lock the most ideal for a gym setting. Sweaty fingers aren’t a problem!

The lock retails for $12.00 and will serve you well at the gym or most anywhere else where you need to keep items secure.

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win a 1534D combination padlock from Master Lock

a Rafflecopter giveaway

How We Hang Art on the Fridge: Super Strong Magnetic Clips (GIVEAWAY!!!)

January 9, 2013 · by Tiffany Merritt ·

If your child attends any sort of parents’ day out, day care, or preschool (or if you are just a crafty parent), then your house is likely swimming with pieces of art that your little Rembrandt has completed.

I shared a long while back one way that we display some of our favorite pieces. We have frames set up along a short wall in our house and we rotate out the art work. It is at Darah’s eye level, which she really enjoys. And it elevates the art to gallery status, even if only for a few weeks.

But as Darah has gotten older and started to do more coloring and drawing, and as she has started to request that more of her work be displayed, we’ve run out of framed space. And so, we turned to the fridge.

I wanted to find some magnets that Darah would be able to make use of on her own. But I know from experience that she loves to play with magnets and sometimes leaves them on the floor. With a crawler in the house, this just won’t do.

Learning Resources has the perfect option: Super Strong Magnetic Clips. These magnets are strong enough that Darah can’t take them off the fridge, yet because they have a clip, Darah is still able to use them and hang her artwork all by herself. I like that with these magnetic clips, the child has control over which art pieces get displayed and which get removed, or at least put behind other art.

photo (10)

The Super Strong Magnetic Clips, in addition to being great teaching tools for children, are also true work horses. Each clip can hold up to 50 pieces of paper at one time (!) and in terms of weight, can hold up to 20 pounds. Can you believe that?!

Learning Resources offers this product for $14.99 for a set of 4. These are magnets that you will use for the rest of your life. They are durable and oh-so-useful. While you are checking them out, see what else you might find at Learning Resources. They are having a huge after-holiday sale with many items 20-50% off! 🙂

What about you? What do you use to display your child’s art work?

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win a set of Super Strong Magnetic Clips

a Rafflecopter giveaway
