Children’s Magazines: A Subscription You and Your Child Will Treasure

April 2, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Something is happening at the House of M that I have been waiting for ever since I became a mom: we have a budding reading enthusiast on our hands! Darah has been learning to read for quite some time, now, but over the last month, something has clicked inside her, and suddenly she’s consuming books like The Hungry Little Catepillar on his feast day.

In short, this new development is thrilling to me. I am scouring library shelves and bringing home pile after pile of fun reads. We are tracking her progress through the Good Reads app (free!) and slowly but surely, I’m watching my little girl wake up the the world that is waiting for her inside books.

As I am working on finding all sorts of resources for my little bibliophile-in-training, my thoughts have turned to children’s magazine. I very recently learned about a magazine subscription for kids that is published in England but available for U.S. subscribers, too, and it’s called Storytime.

best kids magazine subscriptions

Storytime sent me a copy of their latest issue (#19) and I fully expected to like it. Instead, I absolutely LOVED it. Each issue comes with 6 stories, a few poems or songs and activities to go along with each story. The stories are delightful to read. The illustrations are vibrant and beautiful. And I really appreciate that unlike traditional magazines, Storytime doesn’t contain any advertising. The focus is on the stories and on the kids who are reading them.

magazine subscription kids

I also very quickly noticed a distinct difference in the printing quality as compared with other magazines. Storytime is the same size as a magazine, and it doesn’t have hard covers, so in that sense it’s like a paperback, but the paper quality is significantly thicker than what you would find in a magazine. Simply put, these issues are meant to be read and enjoyed, and then kept to enjoy again later or to pass on. You won’t find dated material in the issues or poor quality paper that rips easily. So it’s really like getting a new book every month, and that book has a collection of stories within.

Bearing all of these great qualities in mind, I think the U.S. yearly subscription price of $70 is more than fair (go through my referral link and pay for a year up front to get 29% off the cover price!). This comes to just $5.83 per issue, which is a little bit less than what you might pay for a children’s paperback chapter book, and significantly less than what you would pay for a hardback picture book. Shipping from England each month is included in the price, as well.

best kids magazines subscriptions

I am extremely impressed with this magazine and I can see it quickly becoming a favorite of my child’s, especially as she gains confidence as a reader and begins to read on her own during her personal time. Maybe she and I can curl up on the couch together with our favorite magazines!

If you have a little reader on your hands and you are looking for a way to introduce them to the world of magazines, or if you are simply looking for some high quality reading material at an affordable price, I think you will be very pleased with Storytime.

Small Dolls for Imaginative Play: Magic Cabin Halfpenny Dolls Collection

March 29, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Affiliate links may be included at no cost to you. I only promote what I love!

I am guilty of being far too quick to turn to electronic devices when I need to provide entertainment for one of both of my children when we are out and about.

I’m also guilty of being too quick to think that it’s my job to provide entertainment at all, but that’s a topic for another post.

I love when I run across pocket-sized play options that rely on the imagination, and not on passive viewing. So for road trips, plane trips, running errands, or most any time that kids might be away from home and get bored, one great option is to have some halfpenny dolls on hand.

halfpenny dolls 1

These small dolls were sent to us from Magic Cabin (a site I have frequently noted as being the absolute BEST resource for imaginative play).

Halfpenny dolls are exclusive to the site, and are currently offered in 5 different sets (neighborhood friends, nature dolls, Halfpenny family, mermaid family and royal family). They vary in price, but the set featured above is just $24.98, and comes with 4 poseable dolls and a cute little house that the dolls all easily fit inside for transport and storage.

halfpenny dolls 3

My daughters have been taken with the sweet small size of the dolls and with the excellent detailing. It is evident that these are artisan designed and handcrafted with love. The materials are soft and the figures are easy to play with and quite inviting.

halfpenny dolls 2

The set is very lightweight, so adding it to an activity bag or even throwing it in your purse is quite easy and can provide a child with a starting point for some fun imaginary play in most any location. It’s a great alternative to handing over your phone for videos or games and in my experience, the kids love it even more.

It’s a good thing for kids to experience boredom. And it’s an even better thing for them to find a cure for their boredom away from a screen.

Shopping tip: always check the top banner on Magic Cabin for their latest coupon code (if one is currently available). If they are running a special, it will be listed there. The current one is 10% off + free shipping on orders over $80.

4 Things You’ve Never Cleaned in Your Bathroom (But Really Should!)

March 24, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

This post was written in partnership with Kimberly-Clark and The Motherhood. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

How’s spring cleaning coming along for you, friends? Have you gotten started yet? For me, it’s mostly been happening in fits and starts, and has involved lots of decluttering. It feels so good to get a counter space completely cleared off and to finally get rid of all that junk that didn’t need to be there! It also feels good to take a few trips to the thrift store to drop off items that could use a place to live, but that have worn out their welcome in our home.

Spring cleaning, for me, is really about feeling like you can breathe within the house. Less stuff, less dust, less grime. Less is most definitely more in this case.

One room in our house that always feels a bit cramped is our bathroom, so I’ve been decluttering and deep cleaning there, especially. As I worked on this room, I actually identified 4 different things that it has NEVER occurred to me to intentionally clean, and they certainly needed a good cleaning. Maybe they are areas that you forget about, too?

spring cleaning bathroom hero

1. Cleaning the sink

spring cleaning 2

I’m  not talking about the part of the sink you can see, because we all know to clean that area (even if we don’t do it as often as we should!). In this case, I’m referring to your pipes and your drain stopper. Break out your Viva® Vantage paper towels and scrub away the nasty grime on your sink stoppers first. If you haven’t tried this particular line of paper towels, it’s honestly a must for spring cleaning. the Viva Vantage paper towels have a terrycloth-like texture and seem to do particularly well when you are scrubbing.

spring cleaning 4

Next, it’s time to give a little TLC to the pipes. I promise you that they have a caked on layer (or 4) of saliva, toothpaste, soap scum, hair and anything else that has been poured down them. The first thing you need to do is take a drain snake (apologies if that’s not the proper name…that’s what I call it!) and stick it down in there, and move it around really good (as if you had an actual clog). This movement helps break the junk up a bit. Now take 1/2 cup of baking soda and pour it down, followed by a mixture of vinegar and boiling hot water. You will be able to see the difference with your own eyes when you peek down there. And while you won’t see the difference in your day to day life, by cleaning your bathroom sink pipes, you are going to positively impact the overall smell in the bathroom, too.

2. Clean the Toilet Bowl Brush Holder

spring cleaning 5

Most people’s toilet bowl brush sits in a holder of some sort so that toilet water isn’t dripped on the bathroom floor. But guess what? That water is just collecting in the holder and it is nasty. So once again, grab those paper towels and an anti-bacterial spray and give the holder a good wipe down, inside and out. This is a quick task to do, but definitely necessary.

3. Clean the bathroom exhaust light

spring cleaning 3

Most people have an ehxaust fan in the bathroom. Since the air is moist in the bathroom, there probably isn’t a ton of dust gathering up there, but I promise you that there is some. By dusting away the debris and cleaning out the light filter, you will brighten the room up and help your fan run more efficiently.

4. Clean your cleaning products

spring cleaning 6

I have a vivid memory of Danny Tanner, the dad in Full House, cleaning his cleaning products. It was a big joke on the show about what a clean freak he was, even to the point of cleaning his cleaning products. But as it turns out, those bottles get rather nasty over time. I checked mine out and realized that they were pretty gross. So I took just a few minutes to wipe them all down. Now they look nice, they smell nice, and they are free of dust and grime. They hang out in the bathroom that I am working hard to spring clean, so they might as well be nice and clean, too.

spring cleaning 1

While you are cleaning up in your bathroom this spring, definitely take a moment to make sure you are stocked up on the supplies you need, like Viva paper towels and Cotonelle® or Scott® 1000 toilet paper, which you can find at your nearest Walmart. I actually completely cleared off a shelf in our bathroom to make room for just toilet paper. The excess bottles of shampoo, bubble bath, and random bath toys had to go in favor of more utilitarian items. I love the change! I also love knowing exactly how much toilet paper I have on hand because as we all know, running out of toilet paper is pretty much the worst thing.

I hope my tips will help you get your bathroom refreshed this spring. Even though I might have added a bit to your cleaning list, I promise taking a few minutes to clean these areas will make a difference in how your bathroom looks, feels and smells.

Hunt, Catch, Eat and Groom: Enrichment Activities for a Happy Cat

March 22, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #IAMSCat #CollectiveBias

I recently wrote a blog post about the fact that our new cat, Gus, is being leash-trained. It’s not exactly common to see a cat on a leash, so I fielded quite a large number of questions about this adventure!

So today I want to do a more broad follow-up post about the importance of offering enrichment opportunities for your cat, and especially for the cats out there that seem to be “high energy” like our Gus.

As we did our own research about ways to keep an energetic cat like Gus happy, we learned about the importance of a daily ritual for him. Cats, by their nature, love to hunt, catch, eat, and then groom when they are awake. And of course beyond that, they like to sleep most of the day!

So as we have worked on enrichment activities for Gus, we keep those key components in mind, as well as their order. Gus doesn’t want to be groomed before he has eaten, for example. The ritual is key!

We keep a container of products on hand that we use daily for Gus. This way, everything has a home and doesn’t get lost! Iams 1

Here’s a peek at our daily activities with Gus that help keep him happy and healthy. First, we give him some time to hunt, or explore. That’s where leash time comes into play.

Iams 3

Gus knows that he gets outdoor time every morning, and he is always ready to go! He is very used to wearing his leash, but we are still working on learning how to “go for a walk.” IAMS™ cat treats are really key in this process. When we are working on giving directions to him with the leash (gentle tugs) we reinforce the movement suggestion with an offer for a treat. This increases his response rate, for sure! And bonus: these treats from IAMS™ offer oral care benefits.

iams 4

He gets about 10 minutes outside in the morning to sniff around, do a little hunting for interesting things, and to just move a bit and get some exercise. Leash training a cat takes longer than leash training a dog, but for the active cat, I think it’s a fantastic enrichment opportunity.

After his “hunting” time he needs the satisfaction of getting to catch something. We have learned the type of toys that Gus likes the best, and they usually involve string and/or something that makes a bit of noise.

Iams 2

Gus LOVES to get to chase after his toy mouse and kick his ball of yarn. He really gets into it when he catches it, which is the highlight of this part of the morning. Gus has been out in the tall grasses, stalked his prey, and caught it! 😉

Now it’s time for the big payoff: his meal! I only recently learned that it’s important to offer cats food at set times, and not to have food out for them to eat at their leisure. Since we made the switch to feeding Gus after he gets to play and “catch” something, we hae noticed a difference in his behavior for the better.

iams 6

For the most part, Gus gets dry cat food, and IAMS™ Proactive Healthy Weight & Hairball Care Dry Cat Food is a great choice for him and for our other cat, Hattie. They are both large cats, so the healthy weight component is a positive, and Gus has medium length hair, while Hattie has long hair. They both can benefit from the hairball support, for sure.

iams 5

About once a week, we also offer a special meal of IAMS™ wet food (Purrfect Delights Salmon is the favorite flavor around here). If you don’t typically offer wet cat food to your cats, I definitely recommend integrating it into your rotation at least once a week. Your cats will go nuts!

After Gus is all done with his feast, he does a little grooming on his own, and sometimes we break out the cat brush and give him a good hair brushing, too, which he LOVES. It’s not uncommon for him to fall asleep while getting groomed or just after. This whole routine is so immensely satisfying for him and really helps meet his need for excitement. Incorporating IAMS™ products into the routine also allows us to target specific dietary needs he has, too. You can find all of the products featured in this post, including IAMS™ products, at Walmart, and note that the wet food and treats are typically on a different aisle than the dry food.

cat food location walmart

If you have an active cat who seems a bit bored or who might be acting out a bit, I want to very strongly encourage you to get him or her on a routine that gives your cat the opportunity to hunt, catch, eat and then groom. You will be amazed at what a difference it can make!

Do you have any other ideas for fun ways to engage active cats and keep them happy and healthy? I’d love to hear! You can also find some really great ideas for keeping your cats happy here. SO many cute ideas!

(Giveaway!) How to Turn Dirty Water into Clean Water: An Awesome Spring Break Experiment

March 21, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 20 Comments

Special thanks to P&G and The Motherhood for partnering with me for today’s post. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

In the fall I wrote a post detailing the incredible work P&G has done in providing clean drinking water to people all over the world.

Since the program’s establishment in 2004, 9 billion liters of clean water have been provided, and this has helped to save an estimated tens of thousands of lives in over 75 countries. But P&G wants to do even more, and has the goal to provide 15 billion liters of clean drinking water by 2020.

My girls and I saw first hand how the purifier of water packets worked back in the fall, and it created a lasting impression.

can purify contaminated drinking water, turning it into safe drinking water in a short amount of time. Each packet can treat 10 liters of water. The contents of the packet kill bacteria and viruses and remove parasites, as well as solid materials. It provides enough clean water for a family of 5 for a day. The packets are highly portable because they are so small and lightweight, and this makes them great for emergencies, natural disasters, as well as for any place in the world with very limited access to clean drinking water. All you need is a packet, a bucket, a stir stick and a filter cloth and you can turn dirty water into clean water.

What an amazing product! When you consider that around 1,000 children die each day to diseases caused by contaminated drinking water, and that women and children spend around 40 BILLION hours each year collecting water (often at the cost of being able to go to school and/or earning income since it takes up so much time), this product is life-changing in every way.

See For Yourself

Fortunately, in the United States, we have easily accessible clean drinking water. But you can now have the experience of transforming dirty water into clean water by purchasing a P&G Safe Drinking Water demonstration pack. For each set of packets purchased, $1.80 will be donated to the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Fund, which is enough to provide clean drinking water to 1 child for 3 months!

To complete the activity, you will also need a large bucket (clear is best), a stirring spoon, some dirt, two cups, and a clean, cotton cloth (as well as items to help hold the cloth in place, such as a bungee cord or some clothes pins).

Begin by filling your bucket with water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes. You may be surprised to see a few particulants settle to the bottom, even in your clean water!

Now mix a little bit of dirt in with a little bit of water to make a muddy paste. Then add a little bit more water to further dilute the mixture, and then add all of that into your clean water.

Give it a good stir and let it settle for a minute or two. Scoop out a cup of it, and just imagine that this is your drinking water. This is the reality for millions of people all over the world

So, how can we clean it? Well, it’s time to add the P&G Clean Water packet!

This is the really fun part! Stir the contents of the bucket for 5 minutes. For the first 3 minutes, or so, you probably won’t see much of a change in the water. But during the last 2 minutes of stirring, you may start to notice some interesting stuff happening in the water. Bits of dirt and junk seem to be forming their own little clumps. By the time you stop stirring, you will notice some serious separation going on, and the water getting clearer and clearer.

Let it settle for 5 minutes, and then put your cloth over the bucket top to act as a strainer. Pour the water into another bucket.

Now let this water sit for 20 minutes, as the product is still working on the disinfection piece of cleaning the water.

Now you have clean, safe drinking water for your family for the day. Isn’t that AMAZING??!!

During your Spring Break, I want to encourage you to do this activity with your kids. It’s super neat to watch, and it also can lead to a terrific discussion about the global clean water crisis and the role science and technology can play in finding a solution, as well as the role we each can play by contributing a small amount of money to help provide clean water to those in need. You can purchase a P&G Purifier of Water packet set for $6.99!

Win it!

FIVE lucky Stuff Parents Need readers will each win a P&G Safe Drinking Water demonstration pack!

To enter, simply leave a comment below stating that you want to be entered (and be sure your email address is listed so that I can contact you if you win!).

No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited. Open to legal residents of US & DC who are 18 years of age or older. Giveaway starts 03/21/2016 and ends 04/04/2016. Sponsored by The Motherhood with a P&G Purifier of Water packet. For the full list of rules, click here.

Bunny Costumes for Kids: My Top Picks

March 17, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Affiliate links may be included at no cost to you. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

Earlier this week I had a flashback to my oldest rockin’ a bunny costume when she was a young toddler. My heart absolutely melted when I saw the cute picture of her on this blog post, and it got me thinking about how much I enjoyed getting to see my little bunny (that’s her nickname) dressed up like a bunny.

So now I’m thinking about doing it again this Easter, and I thought I’d share my research with you in case you are looking for bunny costumes right about now. I’ve searched high and low and these are the cutest bunny costumes the internet has to offer at the moment (that aren’t CRAZY expensive, that is!). There aren’t as many children’s bunny costumes out there as I was hoping, and I was super surprised by how many of them had cotton tails on top of the head of the costume (I can’t make this stuff up, y’all…it’s weird). So hopefully I can help you weed out the strange stuff (as well as the half a million adult female bunny costumes).

bunny costumes for toddlers

Infants and Young Toddlers

I am totally freaking out over this set which is perfect for the pre-crawler. Dress them only in these pieces for a photo shoot, or combine it with a white or gray onesie and baby legs to go out and about. Available through etsy.

bunny 2

This is the one my sweet little Darah had and it is just too much! Those long, soft ears! Those feet! That cotton tail! Baby needs to be able to sit up unassisted to rock this one. Sizing starts at 6 months.

If you want something in total spring colors, this is definitely the way to go. Look at that gingham! Gaaa!!!! I saw this costume a few different places online, but Amazon has the best price.

Kids

bunny 1

For the older girl, I think this wacky take on a cartoon favorite is the way to go. There’s no bunny more awesome than Bugs Bunny, after all! Available at Kohls.

I also like this play on the White Rabbit. This would be so cute paired with a rabbit nose piece!

Thank Goodness for Netflix, and Thank Goodness for LEGO (A Pneumonia Story)

March 17, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

I’m a member of the Netflix Stream team and enjoy free streaming service. I have been a happy Netflix customer for 11 years, now and am thrilled to share about my experience.

Last Tuesday started out like most any other. My oldest daughter gave her first presentation ever to her first grade class and I happily attended the presentation in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of my daily work schedule. I noticed that she seemed a little bit low energy, but I chalked it up to nerves. Giving a presentation is a big deal, especially if you are only 6 1/2 years old!

Darah had been wrestling with a cough for about two weeks, and it had mostly improved over that time, though over the past 3 or 4 days it seemed to get worse. When she came home from school that afternoon, a little voice inside my head said, “Go ahead and take her into the clinic nearby for a quick check.” It was 4:50 pm when we left for the clinic.

At 6pm we found ourselves in the ER of our children’s hospital.

A rapid heart rate gave the nurse practitioner who first checked her out concern, and so mama and Darah put on our bravest faces and went to get more help. Before I knew it, my little bunny was hooked up to oxygen machines, undergoing chest x-rays and had an IV to get more fluids in her system. It was our very first visit to the ER, and while I know with certainty that the circumstances could have been much worse, it was still an absolutely horrible moment for me, and I am so thankful for medical teams who knew just what to do to help her little heart calm down, and to get more oxygen in her system while determining the problem, which turned out to be pneumonia.

Pneumonia meant that Darah would be spending the remainder of the week at home with me, trying her hardest to rest. The first day that wasn’t much of a challenge, as her little body was still working so hard to fight. But by Thursday I could tell that she really wanted something fun to help her stay occupied.

Thank goodness for Netflix, y’all.

One of the 5 million things I love about Netflix is how they are generating their own exclusive content, and they are doing it pretty near constantly. It seems like every other day there’s a brand new show available. During our pneumonia break, we discovered two new LEGO shows that Darah and I both enjoyed watching.

Netflix LEGO Bionicle

LEGO Bionicle was a big hit with Darah, so much so that she promptly put together a LEGO Bionicle figurine we were sent afterwards. She even selected another LEGO Bionicle set from Toys R Us after a follow-up appointment with her pediatrician. Little bunnies with pneumonia get to drop by the toy store, you know. There are currently 3 episodes of LEGO Bionicle on Netflix, and this is Netflix Original content, meaning that you can only find it here.

LEGO_Bionicle 2

LEGO Friends can also now be found on Netflix, with two original episodes. We already have a few LEGO Friends sets around the house, and watching the programs certainly renewed Darah’s interest in building with them.

Netflix LEGO Friends

This really turned out to be the perfect pairing for a sick little girl who needed to take it easy, but who still craved something interesting to do during her awake time. The episodes on Netflix were highly entertaining, and building LEGO sets with the characters she just watched was really fun.

LEGO Friends Slam Dunk Still 3

I recommend that your child NOT get pneumonia, but obviously we are not fully in charge of that type of thing, so should you find yourself with a sick kiddo, I highly recommend this prescription for fun in addition to the medicine the doctors say to take. And even if your kid isn’t sick, consider enriching the television experience of LEGO with some building time, or vice versa. You can find a huge array of LEGO shows on Netflix streaming!

Allergies Worse at Night? The Surprising Reason and How to Stop It

March 16, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Affiliate links may be included at no cost to you.

Are you waking up first thing in the morning with allergy problems? Sneezing, trouble breathing through your nose, itchy, watery eyes, etc?

why are allergies worse at night

There are many reasons why this could be happening, but there’s one culprit that most people never even consider: your mattress.

Mattresses are exceptionally good at housing all sorts of things you might be allergic to, such as dust mites and pet dander. Vacuuming your mattress often can help with this matter a little bit, if you can remember to stay on top of it. Which I, personally, cannot.

A better alternative? Keep those allergens from ever touching your mattress at all. The way to do this is to get an anti-allergen mattress cover, like the one SureFit sent my family to check out. We put the anti-allergen mattress cover on my daughter’s thick twin mattress because we have been noticing some allergy problems for her that tend to peak in the night or first thing in the morning. After considering the fact that our cats really love to sleep in her bed with her, we realized that we needed to vacuum her mattress and then add the SureFit Anti Allergen Mattress Pad to keep things in check from now on.

antiallergen_mattresspad

Putting the mattress pad on was extremely easy, and that’s thanks to the special way SureFit products conform to the corners. They have plenty of stretch while still giving a snug fit. I was really impressed, as I find that most any time you have to fit something directly on top of the mattress you are in for a bit of wrangling. Not the case with this product!

The mattress pad protects against those allergens while still providing a breathable layer, which makes it very comfortable to rest on. And it’s machine washable and can be tumble dried, which makes care easy, too.

One question I immediately had about the mattress pad was how often I should wash it. My online research indicates that as a general rule, it’s a good idea to wash it once a season (so about 4 times a year). Basically, when the seasons change, wash your mattress pad!

Great Price for Such a Helpful Product

As we head into spring allergy season here in Chattanooga, I expect the addition of this anti-allergen mattress pad to help our daughter’s allergies improve a little bit. It can’t do much about the pollen in the air, but it can keep it from settling into her mattress if we open up her windows on beautiful days, and it is certainly going to keep dust mites and pet dander from adding fuel to the fire, so to speak. At $59.99 for a twin, the price point is fair because it is going to save quite a bit of misery over the 5 years or so that we will use it before replacing it. That comes to just $12/year!

Have you ever thought about the allergies building up on your mattress? If not, I’d definitely suggest getting an anti-allergen mattress pad like the one we are using from SureFit.
