BrillKids Little Reader Learning System Review: Getting Darah to Read (Again!)

I don’t think I ever mentioned it here, but last Christmas, my parents got Darah the dvds and flash cards that are constantly being advertised on tv to teach babies to read. My mom happened to score the entire set from someone who had purchased it from her grandkids, and the parents weren’t interested in using it. So everything was still in its original packaging, but mom got it for a really good buy!

To tell you the truth, I wasn’t super excited about the system, either. It all sounded like more of a parlor trick than something of substance that would stay with Darah forever and truly give her the ability to read. What I also didn’t like about the system was that you were supposed to let your baby watch the same 20-30 minute DVD every day, twice a day. That was more tv than we liked Darah to watch at that time (by a long shot).

But, we decided to give it a try. Darah did enjoy the videos for a while, and lo and behold, it wasn’t too long before she started reading the words on her flashcards. Even though I still didn’t feel confident about how much she had actually learned (versus memorized), even I had to admit that it was pretty cool to see a 17 month old read the word, “chimpanzee.”

But after about 3 months, Darah had been through all of the DVDs (MANY, many times) and she stopped wanting to watch them. She was bored with them. And she started resisting reading her flashcards. I think the work just got too repetitive and old to her. It probably won’t surprise you to hear that her “reading” skills started to decline, as well. Without those daily video drill sessions, she couldn’t remember as many of those words, anymore. She can still read many of them, but not nearly as many as she could when she was watching her videos, and she doesn’t seem to have nearly as much fun reading now.

So, we’ve been in a reading slump. I’ve wanted to keep moving forward with her on reading, but I haven’t known what to try. Then I learned about BrillKids, another company that has worked hard to develop a system for teaching reading skills very early. Their products are more expensive than what you find on the tv commercials, but after seeing their first semester of english reading for myself, I understand why. BrillKids is actually computer software, as opposed to a DVD. You have the option of buying just the software, or you can buy a deluxe reader kit that also contains flash cards and storybooks and other helpful resources. While the $250 price tag for the kit is tough to swallow, the sheer volume of material you receive really does blow the competition out of the water. I have just been reviewing the software alone, and what really impresses me is that a semester has roughly 6 months of lessons (meant to be taught 5 days each week). Each lesson is different! You are meant to give the lesson to your child 1-2 times, and then you move on to the next lesson. Yes, of course you will see many of the same words, but I love that they switch up their presentation so that children are not simply memorizing.

Another thing I love about BrillKids early reader software is that parents need to be involved. With the dvds, there was really no role for me in helping Darah. You just pop it in and push play. All I could help with was the flash cards. With this system, an adult is needed to click through the lesson, and you go at the speed you desire, so you can stop and have conversations about the words you are learning, you can manually use the arrows to point to the different letters in the words, and you can help make the experience much more fun. I can tell you that Darah absolutely LOVES having mommy involved with her lessons. At this age, it just feels like an extra-special treat for a parent to sit with a child and read, and I love to encourage that. BrillKids allows me to be part of the learning in a way that I just couldn’t with the other system.

If the price tag for the year’s worth of material is just more than you can handle, BrillKids does offer the software download for $150 for a semester. That might be a good way to start to check it out and make sure you like it. I can tell you after trying it for just a few weeks with Darah, I feel much more excited about the BrillKids approach to teaching reading, and I think that boredom is not going to be a problem moving forward, since the lessons always change!

We LOVE the Llama Llama books written by Anna Dewdney. The first book we bought in the series was Llama Llama Red Pajama. It’s all about Little Llama’s lack of patience as he is waiting for Mama Llama to come upstairs and tuck him in to bed. Let’s just say some llama drama ensues, but it all works out in the end!

Using Art to Remember a Loved One

In late August, my mother unexpectedly lost her brother, my Uncle Steve. It turns out, he had been battling stomach cancer for the past year, but the family was unaware. He passed away very suddenly, and my mom didn’t get a chance to even say goodbye before he was gone. It was a very shocking experience.

I spent some time over the next week thinking about my Uncle Steve, and the light he brought to the world and those around him. That’s the way I wanted to remember him; full of joy. It then occurred to me that art would actually be a fantastic way to keep Uncle Steve’s memory alive, and I knew just the way to do it.

My Uncle Steve was among the most loyal University of Alabama fans in the country. He lived and breathed that football team, and could tell you anything and everything about the players and the coaches. It was his passion. Nothing brought Steve more joy than game days, and the thrill of victory when Alabama won was always the icing on the cake.

 

I did some searching online for a great photo of Bryant Stadium, where the University of Alabama plays at home games. I found a terrific shot with a creative commons license that I could use, and then I headed over to Gallery Direct to turn a photo into a beautiful piece of art.

The original photo size was not the standard requested size for Gallery Direct, but they have incredible customer service, and worked with me to make the piece work in a setting. This is something I absolutely love about this store: if you have a question or problem, just email or call them and they will work with you to resolve it. They want to make sure that you get exactly the type of custom framed art that you want, whether it be using a print they have in stock, or a photograph of your own.

I decided to put the photo in an aluminum floated frame option, and I really love the result. It’s sleek and modern, but also timeless. It also really lets the excitement of the image shine through as the star.

When I look at this picture, it’s impossible for me to not think of my Uncle Steve. It’s also impossible for me not to smile. This proudly hangs in my parents’ home as a reminder of Steve and of the happiness that football brought to him. Getting a Handle on Facebook, the Dummies/Idiot’s Way: Review and 50% Discount

I love social media. I mean, I’m a blogger…hello! Social media is where my news, my inspirations and my tips and tricks for everyday life come from. I get most of my information from blog posts 0r from the occasional dip in the Twitter stream (more like VAST ocean, but you get the idea).

And then there’s Facebook. I totally get how to use Facebook.

Kind of.

Ok, not really.

Embarrassing to admit? Yup. But that’s the first step I need to take to start to master this beast of a tool that can help make or break you as a business and that can keep you connected with your friends in a really manageable way…if you know what you are doing.

I was asked to review two popular guides to understanding Facebook and to give my overall thoughts about which one I like best. I have read through The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Facebook and Facebook for Dummies.

Um, wow. I really learned a lot about Facebook after getting through these two books. I’ve got plenty of stuff highlighted that I need to go back and re-read or just execute in my own personal and professional Facebook pages. I think both books can teach anyone a thing or forty about how to get more out of Facebook.

But what if you don’t really want to read 579 total pages about Facebook? Fair enough. I can tell you which book to get if you need to choose.

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Facebook is the winner for me, for the following reasons:

1. It’s a bit shorter, with fewer pages and the book, itself, is smaller, so that means even less text. Yes, in this case I do believe less is more. This is a guide for people who want to important info, and then want to move on. Facebook for Dummies sometimes wanders down a rabbit hole and you are left wondering why you need so much background.

2. While both books offer step-by-step instructions, I noticed that The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Facebook offered more of those guides. This is exactly what the reader needs. Tell me exactly how to do it instead of going on and on about why I should do it!

You aren’t going to make a huge mistake if you pick up Facebook for Dummies, but I think you’ll master Facebook faster and with fewer moments where you actually feel like an idiot if you go with The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Facebook.

Where I Bought Tim’s Halloween Costume (It May Surprise You!): Yandy.com Review

I’m not sure that Tim has ever had a “real” costume for Halloween since I have known him. By “real,” I mean something that didn’t look like a last minute Goodwill purchase.

It’s no secret that my man bears a striking resemblance to a certain popular young wizard, and for YEARS we have been saying that he needs to just give in and be Harry Potter for Halloween. We are thinking about hosting a family-friendly Halloween party this year, so I knew that it was now or never. I got him his Gyffindor robe, and he’s now well on his way to transforming into HP this year!

But where I made this purchase might cause you to raise an eyebrow or two! I bought it from Yandy.com. Let me just go ahead and tell you before you click over: Yandy.com is primarily a lingerie boutique, though they also have one of the most extensive collections of costumes you will find, especially if you are in the market for a sexy costume.

 

Now, that’s not really the season of life I find myself in, but if you are looking for something on the cheeky side, then this is the go-to spot. If Yandy.com doesn’t have it, it probably doesn’t exist!
But they aren’t limited to the risque in their collection, although that is their specialty. You can find some more modest options. They also have a really fun selection of costumes for men. I also picked up a pair of black pants for Tim (they are meant to wear with costumes) so that he doesn’t have to wear his dress slacks when he is dressed up in his costume. These pants will easily transform to a base for other costumes over the years, so I think they were a great find.

The point of all of this is that Yandy.com might not be the place you would think to look for a costume, but check them out; their collection is uncomparable and they just may have what you are looking for, after all! This company works very hard to keep their prices, on average, 10% lower than their competitors without compromising customer service. They are definitely worth a look!

If You Care Eco-Friendly Baking Products Review and GIVEAWAY!!!

Today we are going to talk about two elements commonly created or used as part of creating supplies you find in your kitchen: chlorine and dioxin. Most people know that paper, in its natural state, is light brown in color. In order for it to be that bright white we are used to seeing, it has to be bleached. When paper is bleached at a paper mill, the waste left over is sent into our lakes and rivers. I think many people think that this sort of dumping must surely be illegal, or something that hasn’t happened in a few decades. NOPE! It’s still happening now, and it is terrible for the environment.

Aside from the negative impact to the environment, it also has a negative impact on people. Check out the image below to learn more about what chlorine has been linked to:

Wowzers. That’s pretty rough, people. I didn’t realize all of this until I started doing research for this post, and I’m pretty freaked out by it.

Next, let’s move on to dioxin. According to my source, “The term ‘dioxin’ describes a group of highly toxic chemicals which are produced by several industrial processes that use or burn products containing chlorine, including incinerators and “kraft” paper mills. Dioxins are among the most potent toxic chemicals known.” The effects on humans are very serious, with compelling scientific evidence linking dioxins to cancers, and disruptions in hormonal, reproductive and immune systems.

So what does this have to do with products you may find in your kitchen? Well, your parchment paper,  your coffee filters and your baking cups have all been bleached! That had never even occurred to me until recently. And I didn’t know that I had any alternatives to buying the bleached products. But now I know that I do!

Lavera Organic Liquid Foundation Review

It’s not uncommon for me to get questions from readers about how to go green when it comes to makeup. My typical response has been to try mineral makeup. I have used a powder-based foundation from a well-known company off and on for  years, and I always notice that my skin looks and feels great whenever I use it. Plus, it has far fewer chemicals than most other foundations.

But, I do find it to lack the overall coverage that I can get from most liquid foundations, and sometimes I really want that coverage. In those cases, I haven’t personally known about a quality “green” liquid foundation.

Until now! There’s a fantastic natural beauty company called Lavera that I’m excited to share with you. They are based in Germany, and in 2008 and 2009 they ranked as the #1 green beauty brand based on testing of product ingredients, beating out over 33 other brands. They are certified by BDIH, which is the toughest certification process in the entire world for making sure products are green. So let there be no doubt, the products on the Lavera site are really and truly eco-friendly!

I was pretty blown away by their vast selection of green beauty products, but what really caught my attention was their organic liquid foundation.  From their site, “This hydrating foundation blends easily and hides imperfections, creating a porcelain-smooth canvas. I don’t know about you, but sometimes when something sounds too good to be true in the makeup department, I worry that it won’t really work. I was genuinely nervous about this foundation before it arrived. I feared it would have the coverage of a tinted moisturizer at best, or that it would lack the staying power of a more typical liquid foundation.

I’m so pleased to report that these things are untrue for Lavera liquid foundation! This stuff has held its own beautifully against my other liquid foundations. It lasts just as long as everything else and provides the level of coverage I want.

I have the porcelain shade, which is slightly pale for me right now, but will be perfect in a few months for winter. I would like to see Lavera come out with more shades than they currently offer, as I think their selection is a bit limited (it is currently offered in 5 shades). I do think that if Lavera wants to become as popular in the United States as it is in Europe, more shades are a must!
But as far as the quality goes, I’m very impressed. The liquid foundation is available for $22.50, which puts it in a similar category as department store brands. And you can be assured that this foundation leaves the chemicals you don’t want or need off your face. ChildUp Counting Flash Cards Review and GIVEAWAY!!

I think most every parent works with their baby and toddler on learning ABCs and counting from 1-10. But beyond recognizing the numbers, are you doing any work on teaching math fundamentals? I think its a common perception that a young one’s brain isn’t meant to understand concepts like addition and subtraction, at least not until they reach kindergarten, so why worry about anything beyond counting?
