RewardTag: Help Get Your Valuable Back and Fundraising Opportunities!

October 11, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

One of the reasons I hesitated for a long time to get any sort of a smart phone was because I feared that something so expensive would really own me. I’d constantly be nervous about dropping it, or worse, losing it. In the two years that I’ve had my phone, I’m very pleased to report that I haven’t yet lost my phone, but I attribute that more to good luck, and less to the fact that I’m so careful with it. Inside the house, I lose that thing a few times each week. It’s really only a matter of time before I walk away from somewhere in public without my phone.

There’s a company out that called RewardTag that is designed to help you when that situation does happen (and haven’t we all lost something of value before???). There are labels you can put on your valuable items (phones, laptops, cameras,  etc.). The person who finds it will see the RewardTag on the item, and may hop online to check it out. You can list on the website what you are offering as a reward for that item, should it ever be lost. That gives the person who finds it more incentive to get it back to you! Remember, not everyone who finds a lost item intends to keep it for themselves (or sell it), but if they have no idea who it belongs to, there’s not much they can do to get it back to the owner.

You set up the site with all the items that you have placed reward tags on BEFORE they get lost. So if and when they do get lost, the finder can easily track down the person who lost the item, and also see that you are offering a reward for its return. Everybody wins!

Here’s a quick video that shows you exactly how RewardTag works. It’s really interesting!

RewardTag loves to work with various organization to help them raise funds. They offer up to 50% of the profits to organizations who want to partner with them. If you are involved with a PTA or other organization looking to raise some money, they are definitely worth checking out. One of their very first fundraising platforms is happening right now in support of a breast cancer charity with a cheeky name: Babes for Boobs. This is a group of women who are raising money to walk in the 60-mile Susan G. Komen for the Cure Walk. If you are interested in purchasing some RewardTags and helping these ladies raise money for breast cancer research, check out their fundraising page here. RewardTag would prefer that you buy through their fundraising site than to buy from them directly, because they want to see this group raise a lot of money! Additionally, every organization that partners with RewardTag to raise money and successfully raises $5,000 will get an extra $1,000 bonus from RewardTag in support of their efforts. That’s awesome!

Disclosure: I received a complimentary product for review purposes. The opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Rock ‘N Learn Alphabet Exercise Review and GIVEAWAY!!!

October 10, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 64 Comments

Today I’m bringing you my third review of a DVD from the Rock ‘N Learn series. Be sure to check out my other reviews of Letter Sounds and Colors, Shapes and Counting. If you are unfamiliar with the company behind these great DVDs, I definitely want to encourage you to check out the Rock ‘N Learn website. You will be very impressed with the depth and breadth of subject material they cover for children as a compliment to what they are learning at school, or even as a tool to help prepare them for going to school!

The video I reviewed this month is called Alphabet Exercise. This one definitely proves the point that a video doesn’t have to be a hit with a grown up in order to be of interest to a child (I think Barney proves that point over and over in his videos!). Alphabet Exercise, from my perspective, is a bit strange. It has a man dressed up (coat and tails) who does various silly exercises that relate to each letter of the alphabet. I found his costume choice to be so unusual that I really had a hard time getting past it! Who exercises in formal dress??? 🙂 Also, his pants are too long. I know that seems like the weirdest thing to focus on, but all I could think about when watching the video was, “Someone needs to hem his pants!”
Fortunately, Darah did not seem too worried about the man’s outfit. She was much more focused on the letters on the screen and repeating them back, as well as on trying to mimic the various funny moves the man was making. And really, that’s the whole point! I will say that the moves were all things that a 2 year old could at least attempt (although some were too advanced for her to master at this point). But any pre-school or kindergartner would be appropriately challenged by the moves. It’s a great way for kids to work out a little extra energy, and I know that as the weather turns colder and going outside to play becomes more difficult, this video will be a great alternative so that Darah can still get some exercise.

Buy it!: Alphabet Exercise is available on DVD for $19.99 and can be purchased on the Rock ‘N Learn website. You can also save 25% off your entire purchase on the site by using the code JQ7711. Yay!

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win the DVD of your choice from Rock ‘N Learn! Woo hoo!

The Highest Quality Vanilla: Nielsen-Massey (GIVEAWAY!!!)

October 7, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 86 Comments

For a really long time, I thought vanilla extract was the same regardless of what you spent on it, and I would just go for the cheapest stuff in the store (which still wasn’t all that cheap!). I learned as a young adult that vanilla from Mexico was some of the best in the world, and after purchasing some on a trip there, I had to admit that there was a substantial difference in the quality of my final product when using the “real” stuff versus the junk I’d been using my entire life. But the problem with getting vanilla from Mexico was just that…you had to go to Mexico to buy it! Needless to say, I’ve been out of that stuff for a few years, and just assumed that high quality vanilla was out of reach for me.

And then I slapped myself for being so silly. In this day and age, you are not limited to what you can physically purchase in a store (duh!), and furthermore, I don’t think American bakers are content to have inferior products when the overall difference in quality is so obvious. There had to be a company out there that sold in the United States AND that created only the finest quality vanilla.

Yes, of course there is. It’s called Nielsen-Massey, and if you start doing research online about vanilla, you will see that this company sets the standard. I had the opportunity to try a type of vanilla product I’d never before heard of, and that’s because Nielsen-Massey has the proprietary rights to it. It’s called Madagascar Pure Vanilla Powder, and it is a VERY cool thing for a baking enthusiast to have in her pantry. It can be sprinkled on something as a topping (we’ve used it on french toast and it was TO DIE FOR!), or you can also add it to baking mixes that might be sensitive to color, and adding that dark vanilla extract might detract from the look you are trying to achieve. Clever, no?

Nielsen-Massey also has an extensive collection of other vanilla products, sure to make any at-home cook drool. Since I’m not too knowledgeable about all the different types of vanilla, I really appreciate that the company has a page dedicated to which type of vanilla to use for various purposes. That eliminates the guess work to ensure that you get the product that best meets your needs.

I also had the opportunity to review the cookbook A Century of Flavor, which celebrates 100 years of Nielsen-Massey as a company and gives you the most tantalizing recipe ideas using their products (from sweet to savory!). You can check out some of their recipes directly from their site, including this Crisp Vanilla Butter Cookie that I will be making, and then devouring, in the next week or so.

Buy it!: While Nielsen-Massey doesn’t offer an online store, they can help you find a local retailer, as well as mail order and internet ordering options from retailers. Bad vanilla doesn’t have to happen to you anymore! Get the good stuff, and taste the difference. You’ll never go back to the grocery store junk, I promise!

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader is going to win the Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Powder! Woo hoo!

You Don’t HAVE to Make Your Child’s Halloween Costume! Promise!

October 6, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

Whether you are crafty or not, you probably feel at least some pressure to come up with something original, creative, super cute, and of course, inexpensive for your little one’s Halloween costume. Pinterest abounds with DIY ideas that just scream, “Best mom EVER made this!!!!”

But let me be the one to tell you that if the thought of making a costume gives you any sort of stress or anxiety, you hereby have permission to NOT do it. And you aren’t a bad mom if you buy a costume! Promise! I will be buying costumes every year until Darah outgrows Halloween. As much as I’d love to whip up something awesome for her, it just isn’t going to happen. I lack the skills, the time, and the mental strength to endure it. Just being honest!

This is why I’m glad that there are companies out there that offer great costume choices at affordable prices! It makes sense for me to spend $30 on something that my daughter will delight in and save myself so much headache (and subsequent guilt when the final product doesn’t look quite right!). JustKidCostumes.com is an EXCELLENT resource for those of us who need to make a purchase and then be done with it!

For just over $30, I was able to get a super cute princess costume with fiber optic lights in the skirt! Even if I COULD sew, I couldn’t make something this fun! What I like about this particular costume is that it is generic, so it isn’t any particular princess, which leaves more to the imagination. BUT…it also sparkles and shines! Darah is going to have an absolute blast with this when we take her trick-or-treating (this will be her first year to go! EEE!). I’m even feeling inspired to dress up, myself, and be part of the fun. Tim’s got his costume ready to go. Any ideas for me??? Remember, DIY is NOT my scene! 🙂

While JustKidCostumes.com might not be able to outfit me for Halloween, they can certainly outfit your child with something simple and cute or even something downright extravagant. They’ve got it all!

AND…I’ve got a coupon for you, to make shopping for your child’s costume that much more fun! Use code BLOGGER10 now through October 16th and score 10% off! Yay!!!

Disclosure: I received a complimentary product for review purposes. The opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Moon Dough: No Longer Messy!

October 5, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 2 Comments

For the past year or so, I’ve been reading reviews online about this product called Moon Dough. From what I have read, this is a love/hate product….kids love it and moms hate it, because it makes such a huge mess every time it gets played with. Understandably, I wasn’t really interested in reviewing the product. We have enough messes in our house as is; no need to add more to it!

But then I got an email asking me to consider reviewing the product. As I read the email, I saw that that company had been listening to the feedback from moms and had gone back to the drawing board and completely overhauled the dough formula so that the mess factor would be drastically reduced.

I LOVE when a company listens and responds! So I decided to go for it, but I’ll admit I was still worried that I’d find crumbly bits of moon dough all over the house.

NOPE! Yes, it can crumble a little bit (more than play-doh), but it isn’t much at all. Certainly not enough to have to get out a vacuum after play time or anything like that. I would actually say this toy is pretty close to mess-free. Way to go, Moon Dough!

So what else makes Moon Dough unique? Well, unlike play-doh, Moon Dough NEVER dries out. I put it to the test, and it really doesn’t! Your child can make a creation, leave it out on display for a week, and then play with it some more. The dough also feels different from play-doh. It’s honestly hard to explain…it’s much lighter…almost foamy in its texture, but still very easy to mold. It’s very unique, and I really liked playing with it. Darah did, too!

We received the Moon Dough Push N’Pop Breakfast set, which comes with 2 colors of moon dough and several molds to create a fun breakfast (pancakes, waffles, toast, and berries!). It retails for $9.99, which I think is a fair price. I do wish it came with one more packet of moon dough, just to vary the colors a bit more. But other than that, I think this is a great toy for a great price. It will keep the kiddos entertained for quite some time and won’t leave you muttering under your breath while you clean up the mess afterwards.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary product for review purposes. The thoughts and opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

(NEW POST!) Kidorable Makes Kid Towels To Grow With Your Child! (GIVEAWAY!!!)

October 4, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 71 Comments

When Darah was a baby, she had the CUTEST collection of towels. Lots of adorable hooded and super soft things; it was so much fun to wrap her in all that cuteness.

Unfortunately, it seems that whoever makes most of the baby towels in this world borrowed notes from the people who make most of the swaddling blankets, and that means that they are WAY TOO SMALL. Darah never was a big baby, but she still outgrew her towels by the time she was just over a year old. RIDICULOUS!

Kidorable, the makers of those insanely cute umbrellas, rain jackets and rain boots, also has a line of kid towels, only they sized them right! You can purchase a small which they will tell you up front will last you until about age 2 (that’s an improvement over most other small towels!), or you can go with a toddler size, which should get you from 3-6.

We checked out the Lucky Cat towel, and it is AWESOME! I can tell now that it will last for several years, both because of its size, and also because of the overall quality of the towel. Yes, the price is higher than what you might pay for a kid’s towel at a big box store, but you are going to get something that will last longer and be twice as cute.

Kidorable towels also come packaged beautifully, in a cute plastic container that only needs to be plopped in a gift bag in order to be ready to go for a birthday party! I love when companies go the distance with every detail, because it makes me much more likely to turn to them for gift-giving occasions. I despise wrapping gifts, and I have a bit of a complex about my packages always looking so unfortunate (and they really do…I almost couldn’t be worse at wrapping). Kidorable makes it easy for your present to shine! 🙂

I also love that the Kidorable website will show you every other product they offer in the same theme that you are considering. For example, the Lucky Cat theme can also be found on an umbrella, jacket, boots, backpack and hangers. It’s easy to put together a really fun collection for someone over time!

Buy it!: Kidorable towels are available in 10 fabulous styles (don’t miss the fireman! SOOO cute!) for $33.00.

Win it!: Oh goody! I get to host a giveaway for the product that put Kidorable on the map….their umbrellas!!!!

(New Post!) Shenzhen Ceramic Knife Review and GIVEAWAY!!!

October 3, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 130 Comments

My sister is getting married in about 8 months. She recently asked me for a list of household items that I absolutely love but that might not be on her radar to add to her registry. One thing that immediately crossed my mind was high quality knives.

We received Cutco knives as a wedding gift 9 1/2 years ago, and to this day, they have not needed to be sharpened. They get used constantly. I absolutely love them.

But let me tell you what I DON’T love….the hoops you have to jump through to buy them, and the expense. While I think the price is ultimately justified by the quality, it really stinks having to fork over so much money for a knife. I don’t even dare to dream about owning a full set of those bad boys. But what is worse than the price is the fact that Cutco knives are difficult to buy. There is NO option for buying directly online. You MUST contact a local sales rep and work through that person.

And I’ve already explained how ambivalent (at best) I feel about working with direct sales reps. The pressure to buy more always feels like it is there, and that just makes me uncomfortable. And then you get asked to consider hosting a party, which can be tempting because it would be nice to get a hefty discount on your own purchase. But then you’d have to host a party. When all you want to do is buy a knife. Sheesh.

I recently had the opportunity to try out some high quality knives that are very easy to buy and that are much more affordable than Cutco. They are called Shenzhen, and they are ceramic knives. I’d never heard of ceramic knives until learning about this company, but I was really intrigued to try them out.

There are a few key benefits to using a ceramic knife:

1. Ceramic knives’ hardness means that the ceramic blade will resist wear and remain sharper than a steel blade.

2. non-stick surface makes the ceramic blade easy to clean.

3. No metallic taste or smell. The ceramic blade will not interact with your food’s taste, as metal can do.

I have used our chef’s knife to cut through butternut squash, and it slices with complete ease. I’ve been very impressed! Right now you can buy a 3 piece ceramic knife set which includes a 6″ ceramic chef’s knife, a 4.8″ ceramic slicing knife and a 3.2″ ceramic paring knife (exactly the knives you need the most when starting a collection), all for $64.98 which includes free shipping. That’s a great price for high quality knives that will go a long time without needing to be
sharpened!

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader is going to win a chef’s knife from Shenzhen (ARV $34.99)

Tropical Traditions Organic Coconut Water Vinegar Review and GIVEAWAY!!!

September 30, 2011 · by Tiffany Merritt · 24 Comments

Tropical Traditions has a very cool product on the market that I want to highly recommend you add to your pantry. It’s called Organic Coconut Water Vinegar, and I think it makes an excellent alternative to distilled vinegar for your recipes. It’s got a great flavor and it is PACKED with nutrients. If left on its own to ferment and turn into vinegar, those nutrients are retained in the vinegar. Most vinegars, coconut or otherwise, are pasteurized using a heat process which does kill off most of those great vitamins and minerals that it normally possesses. Tropical Traditions has worked closely with scientists for use to produce an incubation system that is truly safe and that retains all the goodness that coconut water has to offer.

Additionally, Tropical Traditions is dedicated to making sure their harvesting practices are sustainable. Most other coconut vinegar products are made by harvesting a coconut flower bud, which if left alone would produce coconuts. Trees dedicated to this process will never produce coconuts, as a result. Tropical Traditions uses the coconut, itself for a more natural and healthy final product.
So what do you do with coconut water vinegar? I took the same approach to using this product as I did to using coconut oil, which was a new product to me when I first started using it. I simply started reaching for my coconut water vinegar when I would have normally reached for traditional vinegar. The results have been absolutely delicious! I personally find the flavor to be brighter, though not at all overpowering. And I love knowing that I’m using something that is so very good for my family and the environment.

Buy it!: A 16 oz bottle of Tropical Traditions Organic Coconut Water Vinegar retails for $10 and a 32 ounce jar retails for $18.50. I know our 32 ounce jar is going to last a really long time since recipes that call for vinegar usually don’t call for more than a tablespoon.

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win a bottle of Organic Coconut Water Vinegar!
