Small Amounts of Sun Exposure Add Up: Rock Your Sun Hat

August 9, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Thanks to Coolibar for providing sample sun hats. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

Melanoma runs on my husband’s side of the family. This means that my husband AND my children are more susceptible to skin cancer than the average person, and this, in turn, means that we take sun protection quite seriously. We have a complete aresenal of sun screen and we try to avoid being outside too much during peak UV ray times (10-4).

But I read something recently that really got my attention. It was about how few people guard themselves against exposure to those rays when they will only be outside briefly. I’m most definitely guilty of not worrying about the exposure I’ll be getting during the few minutes I’m outside running errands, for example. But what I read stated that if you are only exposed to those rays for 5 minutes a day, that’s 35 minutes each week of unprotected exposure, which brings you to almost 1 1/2 hours of unprotected exposure each month! It’s highly unlikely that you’ll experience a sun burn as a result of this exposure, but those cancer-causing UVB rays don’t let you see the damage they are doing by way of burns, so you really are blissfully unaware of what’s happening.

I wish I could tell you that I have a new commitment to lathering up before making the 50 foot walk from my back door to my car, but that’s just not true. There’s actually an easier solution: protective clothing! Specifically, I want to talk about sun hats and why they are such a simple fix!

sun hats 3

I am totally digging this hat from Coolibar (it’s called Marina) because it is cute, obviously, but also because it can fold up and go right in my purse so that I can easily have it on hand any time I’m about to step outside.

sun hats 4

Tim also has a foldable hat (called the Featherweight Bucket Hat). He bikes to and from work, including a mid-day bike home for lunch, and we have realized that he is getting quite a bit of unprotected sun exposure. This hat will fit in his bag.

sun hats for kids 2

For the kids, they are rocking the surf’s up bucket hat. I’m actually going to keep these right in the car for the girls so that they can wear them any time we are out and about.

sun hats for kids 1

One of my favorite features of the girls’ hats is that they hold up great in water. And little kids seem to be especially keen at finding sources of water everywhere they go, so this is a great feature!

We have our kids very well trained to know that if they are headed outside to play on a bike or a scooter, they MUST be wearing a bike helmet. It’s time to start training them (and ourselves, too) that a sun hat is a must for time spent outside, whether it’s 5 minutes or 3 hours. Coolibar hats all have a UPF of at least 50 and their protective powers do not wash out or fade.

I’m putting a sun protective jacket on my Christmas wish list for each family member, as well, because it’s really starting to dawn on me that my mentality of, “Oh we’re only out for a short while” doesn’t make sense, because major damage is done over time, with cumulative exposure rather than only with too much exposure on rare occasion. Those 5 minutes add up terribly fast, and the result is increasing a risk that for my family, is already high. A sun hat, like those from Coolibar, can go a long way toward keeping those I love the most protected.

Have you ever thought about how those few minutes outside every day really add up? I’d love to hear if you take extra measures to keep your skin protected or if this is something you hadn’t really thought of until now.

Make Your Special Treat Really Count: Fiber One Cheesecake Bars

August 7, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

This post brought to you by Fiber One. The content and opinions expressed below are that of Stuff Parents Need.

July 30th was National Cheesecake Day, and I totally missed it.

Sad face.

You know, when incredible holidays like National Cheesecake Day pass us by, it is perfectly acceptable to change the rules and celebrate after the fact. Here’s a way to do it without even having to make yourself a cheesecake.

photo fiber one cheesecake bars 2_zpscj9zt1le.jpg

Look at these gorgeous cheesecake bars. They are from Fiber One, and they come in salted caramel and strawberry flavors. They look gorgeous and they taste positively sinful. I actually just stopped writing this blog post to grab one because it just seemed rude to my body to be writing about this product and not also enjoying it! THEY (nom nom nom). ARE (chew chew chew). AWESOME!

You can find them with other Fiber One products at your nearest grocery store, and the boxes look like this:

photo fiber one cheesecake 3_zpstic1ikgf.jpg I’m looking out for you, friends. I know you don’t want to be the girl in the grocery aisle with that super crazy look on her face while searchng for the cheesecake bars. 😉

Here’s what I really love about these products: they taste indulgent and so they make a fantastic choice for a special treat or perhaps some dessert. But you can skip the guilt because these bars come in at just 150 calories and 6 grams of fat, and most importantly, you’ll find 20% of your daily needed fiber in one serving. So your special treat choice doesn’t need to be filled with empty calories, friends. Everything you eat needs to fuel your body. Fiber One Cheesecake Bars for the win!

Fiber One Cheesecake Month Sweepstakes

Fiber One doesn’t think the cheesecake party needs to end after just one day, either, so they are hosting a Fiber One Cheesecake Month celebration, including a Fiber One Cheesecake Appreciation Month Sweepstakes with great prizes! There are going to be 1-2 winners EVERY SINGLE DAY throughout the month of August, as well as a grand prize winner! You’ll also notice a Pin to Win sweepstakes on the Facebook page, so be sure to check that out as well.   photo fiber one cheesecake bars 1_zpspx0gtspl.jpg

Honest Company Organic Cotton Blanket Review: An Honest Assessment

August 2, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 2 Comments

I’ve been eyeing the Organic Cotton Blanket on the Honest Company website for quite some time, and finally decided to take the plunge and order it this summer so I could try it out and tell you all my thoughts.

Here’s the short version: it’s a beautiful, but awfully tiny little blanket that won’t “grow” all that much with your kid.

Now let’s dig a little deeper, shall we?

First, let’s take an up-close look at this blanket that retails for $64, but that Honest company members can snag for $48.75.

honest company organic cotton blanket review 1 It is an absolutely beautiful blanket. I will certainly give credit where it is due, friends. It has a gorgeous, creamy gray color that is truly gender neutral and even color scheme neutral so that it will look great in most any nursery. It is as soft as soft can be, and according to the Honest Company, it is handmade, which does help explain the price tag.

honest company organic cotton blanket review 2

That’s really something you just have to keep in mind when buying from The Honest Company. You are certainly getting high quality products that are made with the environment in mind. They are also made with the employees and craftsmen in mind, too. The Honest Company pays a living wage, and that means that prices are going to look different from what you will find in the aisle of Walmart, plain and simple.

So what’s my beef with this blanket? Well, it’s just so darn small. But let’s be fair to Honest Company for a minute: they advertise this as a blanket for babies and nothing more. The truth is simply that I was hoping that it would be big enough for me to use as a throw. And it isn’t. I wanted it to deliver more than it promised, simple as that.

honest company organic cotton blanket review 3

I think this would be an outstanding gift for a mother-to-be, but I will qualify that statement with this simple truth (at least it’s true here in the South): people LOVE to give handmade baby blankets (and even store-bought ones) as shower gifts. So it is not uncommon for a new mom to find herself with over a dozen blankets, and half of them have been lovingly knitted or crocheted by someone she knows. This could make this beautiful blanket fail to be the standout gift it could be if you knew that the parents weren’t getting any other blankets.

Since I don’t have a baby anymore, and since I happen to know that my little niece has an overabundance of blankets, my plan for this blanket is for it to become a throw at the bottom of my youngest’s bed, which is a twin. I think we can get a few years of decorative use out of it, and it certainly can serve as a throw for little kids. But once they are a bit bigger we’ll need to pass this on to others.

If you are new to Honest Company, be sure to check out my information on how to get started with freebies from the Honest Company, and how to make sure that every bundle you put together has the best products at maximum savings. This is one of the memberships that I enjoy having the most, as it is completely hassle-free. (Giveaway!) Happy, Healthy Heinz: Organic Ketchup from the Best!

July 29, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 4 Comments

Thanks to Heinz for providing products and a fun experience for my family. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

My interest in “greening” my home really started 6 years ago when my oldest was born. It has been a work in progress, and to be honest, one of the last things to get my attention has been food. I just assumed that it would be too hard and too expensive to offer my family organic choices. The hard part really isn’t true, especially over the last few years as organic options have started popping up on my every aisle of even conventional grocery stores, but the expensive part is (mostly). But the more I learn about the importance of organic food to our diet, the more I am convinced that the extra expense is definitely worth it.

But ketchup has been a sticking point for me. I have tried at least 3 different organic ketchup brands and they have all been, well, not nearly as good as Heinz. Heinz has been the measuring stick because it is, in my personal opinion, the best ketchup on the market.

And then I learned about this amaing product:

heinz organic ketchup 1

I had no idea that Heinz had an organic ketchup! All I needed to do was give it a proper taste test to see if my ketchup woes had ended. So thanks to Heinz, we put on a little back porch barbecue to give this ketchup a chance to perform.

While our organic hot dogs, okra and onions were cooking, we did some tomato seed planting in a cute little container bag meant for tomatoes.

heinz 2

This was a great way to talk more with the girls about where our food comes from and what the difference is between organic and non-organic produce. We already have a small herb garden that the girls take care of, and they take immense pride in knowing that their herbs are in a dish I have prepared. In fact, they are more likely to eat it! 🙂

heinz 3

So by getting our kids connected to the growing process and by encouraging an appreciation of how good food reaches our table. we hope we are instilling core values that they will carry with them throughout their lives.

We grilled okra for the first time (just thread them on skewers) and also grilled up an onion, both of which came from our CSA basket this week.

Heinz 5

And then we were ready to put Heinz Organic Ketchup to the test! I love putting a slice of avocado on my hot dogs. It’s a healthy alternative to mayo but still gives you that nice, creamy texture. Definitely try it!

heinz 6

It was good. It was actually SO good that I grabbed the bottle of ketchup to start reading the ingredients, because I was convinced that High Fructose Corn Syrup had to be lurking in the ingredient list in order to produce such a spot-on “Heinz” taste. But look for yourself!

heinz 4

Heinz has a 26 ounce container of their organic ketchup, which is a family-friendly size. They have the same size now availabile for their Simply Heinz Ketchup, which doesn’t contain organic products, but it does contain real sugar and a streamlined ingredient list. You can also find Heinz No Salt Tomato Ketchup and Heinz Reduced Sugar Ketchup. I am so impressed with the line of products this company has created for the conscious consumer!

Win it!: One lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win three VIP Heinz Tomato Ketchup coupons (for 3 free bottles!). You can select the right Heinz Ketchup for your family, or even try them all!

(Giveaway!) Art Lessons for Kids at Home: Home Art Studio

July 24, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 86 Comments

Complimentary products provided for review purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

Can I share with you one of the things that has made me the most uncomfortable as a parent? It’s art.

I know….many of you are going to think that’s completely ridiculous. With all the things out there to be petrified of as a parent, I’m going to get all nervous about art?!

But I have a feeling that somewhere out there, there are people reading this who are giving me a, “Me, too!” Somewhere along the way, and early on in my life, I decided that I wasn’t any good at art, and so I quit challenging myself and I pretty much avoided art if at all humanly possible. This is why people see art I have created with my girls and instantly assume that it was the 5-year-old who made it. Not kidding.

See?!

Creepy craft time! ? #artishardforme #notcrafty

A photo posted by Tiffany (@stuffparentsneed) on Jul 21, 2015 at 12:48pm PDT

Here’s the deal, though: I REALLY don’t want my kids to develop the same fear I have of art, and I know that part of how I will keep that from happening is by making art a part of our daily lives. I have created an art space in our home which has been WONDERFUL because it keeps our materials easy to access. We have been doing art much more frequently since making that shift, so I highly recommend keeping your art suplies visible. Even with these changes, though, I still get very overwhelmed as I look through Pinterest for fun new art ideas. I’m never quite sure what is age appropriate or if the instructions are detailed enough for me to follow (8 times out of 10 they aren’t!). art curriculum 1 And this is where the Home Art Studio comes in. I absolutely LOVE this program, you guys! Each DVD is designed to provide art curriculum for the school year (perhaps roughly 1 new lesson every 2 weeks).  Ms. Volin serves as your art teacher and walks you through the steps to make your art. Since you are watching a DVD, it is easy to pause or even rewind if you need to see a step again. art curriculum 2 Darah and I have been working through the Kindergarten DVD this summer as a way to help increase her confidence and her art skills. And yeah, as a way to increase mine, too. That’s right, friends: I’m working my way through kindergarten art. And no, it’s not too easy for me. The lessons are challenging to Darah, as well, but they are certainly doable, especially with an adult on hand to help explain things. This wouldn’t be the kind of thing you’d sit your 6-year-old in front of and then leave the room while it played. art curriculum 3 You, as the parent, also get lesson plans for each activity (they come on the DVD) so that you can know which supplies you need ahead of time and you can prepare the space for the lesson. Speaking of supplies, you can also buy everything you need for each year’s curriculum through the website, or you can simply pick and choose which items you might need based on your current art supply inventory. It is really nice having exactly what the art teacher in the video is using for her projects on hand, and I didn’t have to head to the dreaded craft supply store to try to figure it out myself. So I highly recommend that if you get one these DVDs you at least look over the supply list and see what you might want to buy. The prices are reasonable. 🙂 art curriculum 4 My time spent with Darah working on these art lessons has been absolutely precious to me. We’ve really bonded over our lessons! I’m there to encourage her when she gets frustrated and she truly beams with pride when she steps back and realizes that she finished a project. We have art hanging up all over the house now! Darah has even taken to hanging up the art I made in my room, which totally makes me smile. She wants me to be proud of my work, too! 🙂 I am planning on buying the first grade Home Art Studio DVD once we are finished with the Kindergarten set. This is some truly fantastic material, whether you are homeschooling or simply seeking some enrichment opportunities. It is doing wonders for my daughter, and it’s doing wonders for me, too. First grade art, here I come! 😉

Win it! One VERY lucky Stuff Parents Need reader will win the entire Home Art Studion curriculum collection (DVDs for K-5, which is a $180 value!). You can work your way through them with your kids or grandkids, and then pass them on to someone else to enjoy. It’s like a gift that keeps on giving!

Honest Company Swim Diapers Review: An Honest Assessment

July 20, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Affiliate links included. I only promote what I use and love.

I am SO happy to report that we are now well past the diapering years in my home. If you aren’t past it yet, take comfort…it WILL end! 🙂 But for now, you might be trying to find some eco-friendly swim diapers for your little one. Last year we purchased an Honest Company reusable swim diaper, and we really loved it.

honest company swim diapers

Some people may be a bit confused about the concept of reusable swim diapers, but let’s all just be honest about what swim diapers ACTUALLY do: they keep poop contained. They don’t really keep urine contained at all. And while they are made differently than regular diapers, they do still swell a little bit once they are wet.

A reusable swim diaper, on the other hand, is going to feel and function more like a bathing suit, only it has more intense elastic around the edges to help contain anything that really needs to stay put, if you know what I’m saying. We found the Honest Company swim diaper to serve very well in that capacity. Our daughter just wore it under her swimsuit. You could also wear it in lieu of a swimsuit, though it’s only a bottom (but Honest Company does sell swim shirts separately, FYI).

The prints are cute and the swim diaper works well. If you spend a lot of time at the beach or the pool, you might want to get more than 1. But for us, we only visited on occasion, so 1 was plenty! They are priced at $13.95, but you can choose to add a swim trio to one of your bundle orders (the trio comes with a swim shirt a hat and a swim diaper) and if you add it to a bundle then you get 25% off the price, which is quite nice! Currently they are offered in 4 prints, and the prints seem to change every year (our swim diaper had pinepples on it, and that doesn’t seem to be an option anymore).

What the Heck is a Bundle?

If you aren’t familiar with how it all works, check out my post on getting started with The Honest Company (and note the info included about how to score freebies!). You can shop with The Honest Company a la carte, or you can bundle items together to save money. It’s a great program and I promise you, it’s SUPER easy to shift how often you order or even to cancel your subscription. I change my order dates all the time and it only takes a few clicks of the mouse!

Backyard Mosquito Repellent Options

July 6, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

Thanks to Thermacell for the complimentary review product. As always, all thoughts are my own.

I have a very strong suspicion that my 3-year-old is actually allergic to mosquito bites. When she gets bit (and she seems to be a frequent target, just like her mama), the bites quickly become large, hard welts. Poor baby. They look just awful.

So that’s a big motivator for me to try to keep mosquitoes away from her as much as possible.

Oh, and that whole West Nile thing, too. Totally scary stuff, y’all.

My solution? Honestly? I always vote for inside play. This strategy is NOT WORKING for my kids, which is understandable. So in order to let them run around outside and play, I need something else, and I’m totally not down with spraying my kiddos with DEET.

We are doing a few different things to stay protected. We are working on planting some mosquito repellent greenery, we have a few pieces of bug repellent clothing, and we also have the ThermaCELL backyard torch.

thermacell backyardtorch 2

Have you seen this bad boy? Let me tell you all about! This battery powered device provides a 15×15 square foot zone that repells mosquitoes and other flying insects.

You can install it on it’s stand to be higher up, or you can place it directly on a flat surface like a table. The top of it has a little replacable mat that when heated (by being turned on) releases repellent into the air and sends those bugs flying in the other direction. It comes with 3 mats that each last 4 hours. Replacement mats can be purchased online. I appreciated seeing that the repellent contained in the mats is approved by the EPA.

thermacell backyard torch 1

Additionally, the LED lighting is soft and ambient; perfect for the evenings and not at all bothersome during the day. For me the big pull here is the mosquito repellent capabilities, but having a lighting feature built in is a really sweet bonus!

The Backyard Torch is also very lightweight and the long stand that you can use breaks down really easily so that you can take this with you anywhere. What a GREAT thing to show up with when joining friends for a barbecue or a playdate in the park!

The ThermaCELL Backyard Torch is available online for $34.99 and refill mats are available for $6.99 (set of 3).

What strategies do you have for keeping mosquitoes from biting you?

Honest Company 3-in-1 Facial Towelettes Review: An Honest Assessment

July 4, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

In the past month, The Honest Company released it’s newest product, their 3-in-1 Facial Towelettes. I put them in my latest bundle order to see how they would fare, and I was not very confident that I would like them. This is because I typically find this type of makeup remover to be wildly insufficient for actually removing makeup; I feel like they tend to just smear the makeup on my face around a bit, more than anything else. And I also sometimes find the cloths to be a bit scratchy.

honest company 3-in-1 facial towelettes review

But The Honest Company has a winner with this product, overall! I will say this: if you have gone “all out” with your makeup and are rocking BB Cream, foundation, multiple layers of eyeshadow, mascara, eyeliner, blush and lipstick, then you aren’t going to get all of your makeup off with one of these cloths. I dare say there isn’t a makeup remover cloth on the planet that will be able to help you with that, at least not in one shot. This cloth is no different. But for days when you didn’t wear makeup or you just put on some BB cream and some lip gloss, then you are going to LOVE this product.

honest company 3-in-1 facial towelettes 2

The size of the cloth is generous and the feel is SO soft. But at the same time, it’s quite strong. I have given it a really good tug (I try to be thorough for you guys!) and it didn’t rip or tear at all. The smell is very clean, too. It doesn’t appear to me that it is fragranced in any way. It just smells naturally nice!

The 3 things this product is supposed to do, if you were wondering, is cleanse, moisturize and remove makeup. I think cleanse & remove makeup are sort of one and the same, but whatever.

I have rather dry skin and my skin feel soft after using the product. I still apply a moisturizer after using it, though I could probably get away without it, especially during the warmer months.

And of course, these towelettes will travel well, which is one of the reasons I like them so much. They are a convenience product. You get 30 towelettes for $6.95, which is enough to last you a month if you only clean your face with this product once a day.

How to Buy Them

I always will let you know when something is best to make part of your bundle or if it’s best to make it an add-on item. At $6.95 retail, you’ll be paying more for the product if you put it in one of your 5 bundle slots, as each bundle slot item breaks down to $7.20 per item. If you make it one of your add-on items, the price drops to 25% off, making it $5.21. So that’s the way to go!

One complaint I have heard from folks about the bundles is that a good chunk of the items available for bundling actually retail for less than $7.20. While I try hard to only buy those items as add-ons, there is something to be said for including one in each bundle if it is something that you need and use all the time AND if you are getting more expensive items in your other slots so that you are still coming out money ahead. Since this item is only 30 cents away from the $7.20 per-item-price, if you are struggling to fill your cart with items that cost more, this might be one to include in one of the slots.

What are Bundles?

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, here’s the Cliff’s Notes version of the story: The Honest Company offers “bundle” deals to folks who subscribe to their products. You can get any 5 products from a select group of offerings for $35.95 and then get up to 3 more items for 25% off retail price. By default, you will get one shipment each month. However, it is SUPER easy to change the date of your bundle. You can push it back a week, a month, 2 months, whatever. You aren’t promising to spend a certain amount within a set time limit. And I LOVE that! The Honest Company also alerts you when it is almost time for you bundle to ship, and that gives you the chance to hop online and change your dates if you aren’t quite ready for another shipment. In exchange for being signed up with them, you will find that you can get some pretty good buys in the bundle. For example, my husband’s shave oil retails on the site for $15.95 but by getting it in the bundle, I’m only paying $7.20!

What are the Best Buys?

I have you covered, friend! I am slowly working my way through most every product offered by The Honest Company to tell you what you should buy and what you should skip. Start with my master list of Honest Company Reviews, and also be sure to check out how you can get several Honest Company free samples before you make a purchase. 🙂

(Giveaway!) A New Way to Rock Your Iced Coffee at Home: Folgers Iced Cafe

June 29, 2015 · by Tiffany Merritt · 9 Comments

I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Folgers. I received a promotional item to thank me for my participation.

Fellow iced coffee afficianados, lean in a little closer, because I’ve got something super exciting to share with you and I don’t want you to miss a single drop of this goodness.

Folgers has just dropped the mic, so to speak, in the world of iced coffee. Check these out!

folgers iced cafe 3

You are looking at products. These are tiny (purse-size! easy to travel with!) containers of 100% coffee extract, with no sugar or preservatives. Just add two squeezes to a cup of cold milk, stir it, and BOOM! iced coffee at the ready for you.

You can choose from Original Latte, Vanilla Latte, Caramel Macchiato and Hazelnut Latte. I’ve tried everything but the Vanilla Latte so far, and I have loved them all! I have done lots and lots of experimenting with different ways to make iced coffee at home, and this is definitely the fastest way to go without purchasing the pre-made stuff that has more chemicals than I’d prefer.

folgers iced cafe 1

AND! I SO love that I can put this in my purse. I’ve been at play dates before where the other mom doesn’t drink coffee at all, and so no coffee for me. Now I could just ask for a glass of milk, though, and be all set!

If you work in an office setting, how perfect are these for your desk?! They won’t take up precious space in the work room refrigerator (and possibly get consumed by others!) but will instead be safely tucked away in your office for your coffee break.

#FolgersFridays

If you aren’t already following Folgers on Facebook and Twitter, take a moment to do so now because they are doing an amazing summer promotion from now through September 4th called #FolgersFridays.
