Weekend Warriors of Play: How Kids Can Teach Parents to Recharge

October 13, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

I can’t think of a single person who has looked at our election process this year and thought, “This is a great example of a healthy democracy at work! Well done, America!” I’m offering no commentary here on the candidates, but am simply stating that it has been a LONG, drawn out process with more mud-slinging than I knew to be humanly possible.

And frankly, it’s left me feeling just gross. I watched the most recent political debate on a Friday night and spent the entire weekend working it out of my system with my family. We stepped away from the internet and did a little playing and friends, it was SO good for my soul. So good.

Want to see what we’ve been up to? Saturday we were up bright and early and found a kid-friendly trail just a 10 minute drive away from our home (oh how spoiled we are living in a great outdoorsy community like Chattanooga!).

family-hike-2

We got to put on long sleeves for the first times all season (it’s been way too hot for way too long!) and enjoyed some crisp air and some lovely foliage. And not more than 10 minutes into our hike did we have our first awe-inspiring moment. Can you spot the 6 foot tall human standing next to this tree?

family-hike-1

WOW!!! This amazing specimen was just hangin’ out in the forest, doing it’s thing! It was so very awesome to get to just put life on hold for a minute and take in the majesty of it. And my kids were positively giddy to see something so cool, too.

Getting out into nature for a bit with my family gave me the time and space I needed to let go of my daily routine and my entire adult world, really, and to just be present and be a fellow explorer with my kiddos. I find that in nature, kids are the very best guides and leaders and the parents should follow their example. They are highly intuitive and perceptive and seem to know when to stop and linger, when to quiet down and listen, and when to simply delight in something they find.

family-hike-3

The girls also enjoyed using their brand new sit-upons that they made at Girl Scouts when it it was time for a snack break. CLIF Kid Zbars came along on the trip. Tim has been eating CLIF bars since he was a young teen doing rock climbing and snowboarding. I’ve continued to purchase them for our home because they fit the bill for the type of snack I want to offer my kids when they are being active (nutrient-dense, organic, non-GMO, preservative and HFCS-free, and portioned correctly).

The next day, my girls woke up talking about how much fun they had the day before getting to do “fun family” stuff and they asked if we could do something else that day. So we decided to go to the amazing rock climbing gym that we have downtown to work our bodies, to challenge our minds, and most of all, to have more fun together.

family-rock-climbing

Friends, the girls simply THRIVED in this environment! It was a beautiful sight to behold. They were getting fantastic exercise and were loving the challenge of rock climbing and bouldering. They stayed and played for almost 4 hours, and now my husband and I are very seriously considering purchasing an annual membership for our whole family since 3 out of 4 of us love to rock climb, and as for the one who doesn’t (that would be me), this facility also offers yoga classes for its members, and yoga is one of my very favorite forms of exercise. This seems like an awesome option for my family that we can enjoy for some portion of time every weekend, and since we live downtown, we can also head over on the occasional weeknight to play around for a bit.

What this past weekend showed me is that the adults in my family need some time spent playing and having fun and moving our bodies just as much as the kids, and we are well-served if we simply follow our kids’ lead. Life is hectic and busy and it can be all too easy to put the fun stuff on the back burner, but when it’s all said and done, these are the memories we will keep with us.

family-rock-climbing-2

What fun activities might you have access to in your community? If you are lucky enough to have a rock climbing gym, most definitely go check that out, but no matter where you are, there’s surely a walking trail or a patch of nature somewhere close by where you and your family could go and get lost for a little while (and for FREE!). October is such a glorious month pretty much everywhere, so take advantage of it and let your kids lead you this week in some good old fashioned play time. And take a moment to check out this video CLIF Kid video for additional inspiration!

I was selected for this opportunity as a member of CLEVER and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

The Fashion Subscription Box for Girls: Our Kidpik Experience

October 12, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

I’ve been treating myself to the occasional Stitch Fix box (ok…22 of them) for the past 3 years now and have really enjoyed getting a curated collection of clothes to try out, hassle-free. My 7-year-old has asked me the last few times I’ve gotten one in the mail when she could get her own Stitch Fix.

Well, a company called Kidpik is available now to respond to that desire from children to get their own carefully selected styles to try out. We were invited to head over to the website and fill out a style profile for Darah (she got a huge kick out of getting to share her thoughts and opinions on style), Based on the profile we filled out, we were told to expect a box of goodies in the mail shortly with perfect piks for Miss D.

You guys, she started asking THE NEXT DAY if the box had arrived and asked me pretty much every day after that until it actually came!

kidpik-box

The very first thing we noticed when we opened Darah’s Kidpik is that everything in the box coordinated beautifully. As a Stitch Fix customer, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy at how everything could mix and match…I wish my boxes could offer that to help me build a better capsule wardrobe!

Darah noticed the color palette in the box, too, and immediately began to lay out each piece on the floor, and then started putting together different outfit options like she was working on a puzzle. It delighted her to get to play stylist for a bit, and soon after she was ready to try everything on. These are the outfit combinations she chose.

kidpick-love-top-with-cool-jeans

First, those jeans, y’all! To be honest, I was surprised to see denim in the collection because in the profile we noted that Darah doesn’t wear jeans at all (she’s ALL about the leggings and owns ZERO pairs of jeans). But D and I both swooned over these jeans. They are, in a word, perfect. They have a lot of stretch, they have a snap button which Darah liked, and the pattern doesn’t look anything like jeans (I think Darah finds jeans to be terribly boring, and these are anything but).

The shirt is also fantastic, with gold and white sequins spelling out, “Love.” It is her style to a T. She paired it (and every other outfit) with her brand new booties that were in the box. They are maybe 1/2 a size too big but I think she’ll be able to comfortably wear them quickly…like within 2 or 3 months (you know how kids’ feet grow like weeds!). In this shot you’ll also notice a fun bracelet, which was sent along as a freebie. I get the impression that every box has some sort of free gift included.

kidpick-silver-and-gold-outfit

This next outfit was probably Darah’s favorite. When she put it together, she told me it was her Girl Scout outfit, explaining that it reminds her of the song we sing at the end of our troop meetings (make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other’s gold). The dress actually has a bit of shimmer in the fabric, which amps up the wow factor for it, and the gold jacket just tickled Darah to pieces. It’s also a bit on the large side for her, but Darah is super duper petite (and also a bit sensitive about it, so she prefers to wear size 7 clothing even though she fits better in size 6, and we did request size 7 from KidPik….so the size thing isn’t their fault!).

kidpik-september-2016-1

The final outfit was this fun quilted teal dress that has tons of shimmer throughout it. It’s a very cool fabric that I’ve never seen before, and Darah said it made her feel like a mermaid. Again, it was a little big on her but it was just what we requested, and she loved the dress and wore it for the rest of the evening after we were done with our fashion shoot. The headband shown above was also in our Kidpik and she has worn it almost every day to school since she received it.

So in our box we received 2 dresses, 1 shirt, 1 jacket, 1 pair of booties and a headband. You can purchase items a la carte, but the savings are quite significant if you just buy the whole box (you’ll get 30% off!). The total for everything we received at the 30% off price was $105, and I thought that was reasonable, especially considering the fact that it provides so many mix-and-match options that can help make getting ready in the morning that much easier for kids.

And as for getting Darah’s style right, they definitely nailed it. She loves shimmer and shine and pretty colors. I’ve gone online to see the piks for other kids in other reviews and they really do send a wide variety of looks and styles (for example, if your daughter never wants to wear dresses or doesn’t like shimmer that’s not going to be a problem…mine just happens to love them!).

Kidpik offers a variety of purchase options, from a one-time box all the way up to one box per month. I think the option I like the most is to get 4 boxes per year, 1 being delivered each season.

Do you think your daughter would enjoy a Kidpik? Definitely give them a try, if so! They offer styling in sizes 4-14.

7 Stress-Free Holiday Ideas for Large Family Gatherings

October 4, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

My Top Stress-Free Holiday Ideas

Every other year my husband’s side of the family gathers together to celebrate and have great quality time together. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the 3 adult children, their spouses and the 8 grandchildren to all be with each other. We always have so much fun together, but pulling it off can be anything but stress-free!

It’s a logistical nightmare to figure out how to house, feed and entertain 15 people, some of whom still take naps (and many of whom sure wish they could sneak in some naps!) under one roof. The logistics get even more complicated when you add in the fact that we live in entirely different parts of the world, with one family in California, one in Arkansas, one in eastern Tennessee and one in Switzerland.

Your family may not be quite that spread out, but it’s becoming more and more normal for families to live far apart and for gatherings to be a bit of an act of Congress. So today I wanted to share a few solutions we have found that really helped gather us all together with less hassle.

stress-free holiday ideas

Get a Vacation Rental for Large Families

My first stress-free holiday idea if you are bringing in family from many different parts of the country or world is to re-think the meeting location. It may be the default option for everyone to travel to grandma’s house, but is there another option that might actually be better? The best family holiday locations might not be in the city where anyone actually lives! For example, one year my family met up in Tunica, Mississippi, where NOBODY lives. We did this because we knew that the California and Switzerland crews were going to have to fly, regardless, but by finding a place that was within driving distance for the Arkansas and Tennessee families, we helped those two families save quite a bit because plane tickets were no longer needed for those 9 people.

As for the lodging, we found a large home on VRBO that was available to rent in the area (AirBnB is another great place to find homes to rent, FYI). It cost less than what those 9 plane tickets would have cost and it also had an additional benefit: nobody had the arduous task of serving as the host! Nobody had to do a deep clean of their home right before the holidays, and nobody had to contend with inflated home maintenance bills (water, electricity, gas) that a large party would cause. And no family had to feel like they weren’t really on vacation because they were just at their house. It was honestly GREAT! Vacation rentals for large families can be surprisingly affordable, especially if each family can tackle a portion of the overall bill, and we have found them to be a big component of cutting out stress while we are gathered together.

Stagger Visits a Bit

My second stress-free holiday idea applies in the event that you cannot find a unique location and must all gather at one family member’s home: stagger your visits a bit. This past Christmas the family was able to make the trip out to California (we were saying goodbye to the family home which is going to be sold later this year), and the home is very smartly designed with tons of open space. Still, it only has 3 bedrooms (and a den that becomes a fourth bedroom) and 15 people under one roof is just a lot! My family had the most flexibility with our travel plans, and we wanted to spend a lot of time in California since it would be our last visit for who knows how long, so we went for 20 days (I know!!!). It was just us for 5 or 6 of those days, and that transition was really nice. We got adjusted to the time zone and found our rhythm in the home before the next family joined us, and then a few days later the third family joined us and that’s when the fun factor reached its peak, as well as the chaos factor. But because we had our grounding, we were totally ready for it and it made things surprisingly smooth.

Plan Out the Meals

My third stress-free holiday tip is to take the time to plan out your meals BEFORE you gather together. For our California trip, I created a Google doc for the family so that everyone could have input on what their families liked to eat, or if there were any restaurants they wanted to visit (hello, In-N-Out!). The document, of course, is flexible, and we found ourselves rearranging, adding to, and taking away things that had been pre-planned, but having this guide on hand made our grocery trips much more efficient and effective, not to mention the fact that it helped keep the Christmas budget for a large family from spiraling out of control. It also kept the chaos to a minimum, especially as the numbers of folks in the house grew.

Split the Cooking Between the Families

My fourth stress-free holiday idea is to assign cooking days to families. Having the meals planned out is extremely helpful, but it can all fall apart if there’s no plan in place or who is actually going to turn the ingredients that were purchased into meals. We plotted out which families would be responsible for preparing which meals, and of course, we also helped each other out, serving as sous chefs when someone else was in charge, or helping by blocking the kids from the kitchen and taking them out to play. If there is a clear picture of who is doing what, it will prevent so much confusion and frustration and it will ensure that dinner makes it to the table before kids start melting down.

Figure Out Your “Must Haves” Right at the Start

My fifth stress-free holiday tip is to think about what is flexible and what isn’t for your family. If you have a little one for example, you may need to be very firm about sticking to the nap schedule (for the sake of everyone’s sanity!) but if you have older kids, you may have some wiggle room about exactly when bedtime is. It’s important to be open and honest about anything that really needs to happen for your family to stay happy (such as a daily iced coffee for me!). Your extended family doesn’t live with you day to day, so they don’t know if you don’t tell them!

So ensure you pack those small necessities that bring you comfort—whether it’s your favorite travel pillow, a specific brand of tea, or a pair of fun patterned dress socks that make you feel put together even in a full house. Those little things can make a big difference.

Blend the Cultures

On a related note, my sixth stress-free holiday idea is for the adults to get together after the kids go to bed to hash out holiday traditions and to figure out how to blend them together. For example, in my family, Santa’s presents are open and on display, and in my husband’s family, they are wrapped in special tissue paper. Getting everyone on the same page about what traditions are really important and which ones can be a little different this year matters, and it also adds to the fun to get to incorporate someone else’s traditions into your celebration.

Take Turns Watching the Children

My seventh stress-free holiday tip is to leverage the babysitting power you have with all the adults on hand so that other adults can have quality conversations with each other. My brother-in-law, Brian, was highly skilled in this area, and he would take all of the kids out, along with one other adult who was available, and that would leave the other adults to have some much-needed quality time with each other, having good conversations without being interrupted 8,000 times, or to go do a fun activity together (small groups of adults took turns going to see the new Star Wars movie, for example). This strategy also works well to give the adult couples a chance to go out on a date, which is such a nice treat. By sharing the child-watching responsibilities, the adults actually got a chance to relax and have a bit of fun!

What all do you think? What are the stress free holiday ideas you use for your family? Leave a comment below and we can all help each other be happier and less stressful this holiday season!

(Giveaway!!!) Home Update Inspirations for 2017

October 3, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 58 Comments

Thanks to Olympic and The Motherhood for partnering with me on today’s post. Compensation has been provided. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Friends I am still MAJORLY in love with the transformation we did to our living room over the summer (missed that before and after post? Here’s where to find it!). The difference in the vibe of space is huge and the amount of effort it took was shockingly small. If you know how to open a paint can, dip a brush into it, and put that color on the walls, then you can have just as dramatic of an update to a room in your home this year, too.

I’m thinking ahead about the room I want to change in 2017, and it might be time for my oldest child to get some fun new updates in her space. My oldest loves to play with her stuffed animals more than anything else, so I’ve been thinking that it would be fun to give her a space where animals love to live: a forest!

forest-bedroom-ideas

I’ve been looking for some ideas that will grow well with her (as tempted as I am to make a fairy room, I know that she’ll outgrow fairies fairly soon…which hurts my heart because it means she’s growing up, but I digress…). By creating a woodland room, though, there’s still a prompt at hand for awesome imaginative play, but it doesn’t feel too childish at all. It can also simply be a calming and serene space, which is really nice.

I went for the moss point green in the Olympic paint line. It’s such a rich yet very natural shade that makes me think of a forest as soon as I see it. It’s quiet and calm, yet totally full of life at the same time. I think it’s pretty darn great! And if you like the other inspirations, feel free to check out the wood desk, the owl print, the log pillow, the feathers garland, the watercolor forest bedding and the forest wall hanging.

Paint Your Walls Right Now!

If you want to see how your room might look with a new color, try out the Olypimc Paint Visualizer tool. With just a few clicks you can view your room with a brand new color on the walls! You can also pick up affordably priced paint samples if you want to compare and contrast a few different options side-by-side on your walls.

Giveaway!

Can you think of a room in your home that could benefit from an awesome new color on the walls? Here’s your chance to get that project rolling with a $50 Lowe’s gift card so you can visit the Olympic Color Center!

Natural Hair Conditioning Treatments: My DIY Approach

September 28, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

For the past few weeks I’ve been using a natural hair conditioning treatment and I have been really pleased with the results. In fact, just yesterday I received a compliment on my hair from a complete stranger, and this sort of thing just NEVER HAPPENS in my life anymore. As in…I cannot for the life of me remember the last time a stranger paid me a compliment. So it was kind of a really big deal. 🙂

I put together this recipe while searching online for the best hair conditioning treatment. I had some particulars that I was seeking:

  1. I didn’t want it to be terribly expensive
  2. I didn’t want it to have to sit in my hair for some length of time and then be washed out (who has time for that?!)
  3. I wanted it to be natural, so no nasty chemical stuff, please.
  4. I wanted my hair to look and feel better with use. Otherwise, why bother?

So here’s where I landed. I hope you give it (or some variation of it) a try and let me know how it goes!

hair-conditioning-treatment-using-essential-oils

I start out with organic argan oil (I use this brand and love it…it’s a reasonable price for how long it will last you). I use two full pumps just after showering on my thick, full hair that comes down a few inches past my shoulder (my hair is long but on the short side of long….make sense?). Argan oil is an excellent natural moisturizer for hair and it leaves great shine but not a greasy look or feel. But I don’t just use argan oil and call it a day. I add some key essential oils to really ramp up the benefits.

For each essential oil mentioned, I’ve added 4 total drops to the entire bottle. That’s it! A little goes a long with with essential oils, especially when you use the good stuff (I swear by Young Living).  essential-oils-for-healthy-hair

So here’s what I add and why:

  • lemongrass (strengthens hair follicles)
  • rosemary (stimulates hair growth, can slow graying)
  • peppermint (promotes a healthy scalp, uplifiting scent is great for morning showers)
  • tea tree (fights off fungus that can lead to dandruff, moisturizes the scalp, lice are repelled by it)
  • cedarwood (promotes hair growth, promotes hair thickness)
  • ylang ylang (strengthens hair follicles, moisturizes, reduces hair loss)

Overall, it’s a very simply DIY hair conditioning treatment that I use after every shampoo (and often in place of my conditioner). I tried the argan oil by itself but since I already use essential oils and know that they can be great for the hair, I decided to add them into the mix and my results have been really positive. My frizzies are very much under control and my hair has great shine and manageability.

If you are new to the world of essential oils and need some help getting your hands on the really good stuff (oh heck yes, there is a HUGE difference in quality from brand to brand) feel free to reach out to me, as I place an order with Young Living once a month and I’d be happy to pick something up for you (you have to have a membership to YL to get wholesale pricing, or you can sign up yourself as a retail customer, but you will pay 24% more). If you were just going to try one oil, ylang ylang would be my very top pick, but go for what sounds the most helpful based on your particular needs. You can reach me at stuffparentsneed (at) gmail (dot) com.

The Best Toys for 12-18 Month Olds: Top 25 Picks

September 23, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Affiliate links may be included at no cost to you. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and none of these companies requested inclusion in this list of top baby toys for 12-18 months.

I have been so pleased with how helpful folks have found my round up of best baby toys for 6-12 months that I decided it’s time to offer some thoughts on what rocks for the next age bracket, those adorable (and exhausting!) 12-18 month olds who seem to be into EVERYTHING!!! Based on my personal experience, advice from a friend who had a toddler more recently than me, and based on my experience with certain brands, I present to you the best toys for 12-18 month olds. I hope having this list of top toys helps you out as you work on birthday and holiday shopping or wish list making!

best-baby-toys-12-18-months

  1. Teepee Tent

The price is VERY nice for this item, and as teepee owners, I can tell you that this is a toy that will get used for YEARS before it it retired. You will be hard-pressed to get more bang for your buck!

2. Topanifarm Cubes

Take your stacking blocks to a new level! These are bright and beautiful, which will draw your young toddler to them, and the added animals (not small enough to be choking hazards, though children this age should always be supervised during play) are a HUGE interest builder for kids. Absolutely love this and wish it had been around when my kids were little.

3. Step 2 Whisper Ride Buggy
Ride-on toys are pretty much always loved by this age range of kids. A friend of mine got this as a first birthday present and it’s still going strong a few years later!  Comes in pink or blue.
4. VTech Sit to Stand Learning Walker
This is the perfect choice for the little ones who are taking a bit longer to start walking (my oldest didn’t walk until 14 months, for example). The activities all along the front side draw the child in to engage, and those handle bars up top become irresistible, and before you know it, steps are being taken!
5. Fat Brain Toys Rolligo
I recall my kids enjoying taking things out of containers and putting them back in over and over again, and being highly entertained by that process. This Rolligo toy has balls that can come out of a funky and fun container and then get put back in. It might not sound fun to us, but I promise, it will be a huge hit with young toddlers!
6. Fisher Price Go Baby Go Poppity-Pop Musical Dino
A ball popper is a must for this group, and isn’t this such an awesome one?!
7. Boon Water Pipes Bath Toy
Toddlers are SOOO squirmy in the tub, so finding a great tub toy is critical, and this one is a big winner. What toddler isn’t going to LOVE getting to dump water through pipes over and over?
8. VTech Spin & Learn Color Flashlight
Let me keep it real: this is a toy that makes a lot of noise and flashes a lot of lights. It will NOT be the favorite of the parents. But it will be much-loved by the little ones. The perfect gift for a grandparent to give. Ha!
9. Fisher Price Play n’ Go Farm
This one should bring back some memories. The design is very similar to the farm play house many of us had as kids. Love the classic look of it. I’d want to play with it, again!
10. Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Crawl Around Learning Center
Any young toddler will enjoy this learning center, but it is another one that I’d recommend for the child who isn’t yet confidently walking. Movement all around is encouraged to play with everything, though, which I really like.
11. Playhouse Tent with Tunnel
So perfect for shaded outdoor play! Most definitely buy some ball pit balls to go with this because it will greatly increase the amount of time the toddler wants to spend playing here.
12. B. Toys Toddler Music Band
Oh heck yes. This will be great fun for the little ones, and so nice to have around if you have a play date, because at this age kids will do parallel play, but not really play together. If everyone can have their own instrument, then fun will be had by all!
13. Fisher Price Stroll Along Walker
Absolutely love this as a way to practice walking while also practicing pretend play with a doll. The stroller is also a walker. Also, note the wallet-friendly price-point!

14. Melissa & Doug Shape Sorting Drum

This one is such a great choice for those little growing minds! Having 3-dimensional shapes to hold helps the brain tremendously to be able to truly understand them, and to create maps in their brains of the objects which will help them down the road in preschool and elementary school. This also fulfills that need little ones have to put stuff in boxes and take them out, only with a more challenging element.
15. Fisher-Price Bright Beats Dance & Move BeatBo
So this item is actually on the recommended list for 6-12 months, too, and that should tell you something about what a huge hit it really is! My friend’s daughter is still playing with this at 2 1/2, so if you are looking for a toy that will grow with the child, this really is a great choice.
16. Finger Puppets
Busy little toddlers can really struggle to sit still for story time, which can be tough on parents who have heard about how important it is to read every day to your little one (and it IS really important!). A finger puppet can tremendously help a child keep her attention on the story and even get the little one involved if they want to wear the puppet (side note: I also HIGHLY recommend sing-a-long books for toddlers…dancing while reading? A perfect choice!).
17. Baby Einstein Learning Table
My girls had something very similar to this and played and played with it! Great for curious minds!
18. Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Smart Train
This comes with over 50 tunes and phrases and with different challenge levels depending on the child’s development. Big hit!
19. Melissa & Doug First Bead Maze
I remember these types of toys continuing to interest me even as a 1st grader (they were in the waiting room of our dentist). What I really love about this one is that it is small enough for travel (something to do in the car!) and that it has suction cups so you can secure it on a flat surface. Brilliant!
20. Little Tikes T-Ball Set
Is the little one you are buying for already running? Give him/her something to chase after! Love this classic toy that will get played with for quite a while before it is outgrown.
21. Moluk Mini Bilibo Baby Toy
These look AWESOME!!!! Watch the video on Amazon to see the different kinds of things little ones do with this imaginative product! Definitely another one I wish I had known about.
22. Mirari Bouncy Bop Shape Sorter
Cute variation on the shape sorting concept: the shapes will bounce inside!
23. Mega Blocks
Believe it or not, it’s not too early to start building with your little one. These are a perfect precursor to Legos, and they are big enough that you won’t accidentally step on them. 🙂
24. Leap Frog Musical Rainbow Tea Set
This is another toy that will grow with your child as the interest in imaginative play develops. At this stage, the songs played by the set will be most enjoyed.
25. Brilliant Basics Corn Popper
I couldn’t wrap up this list for toys for 12-18 month olds without including this one! What a classic! And I have to say, as a parent who listened to toddler toys, I’ll take the popping sound over music any day (just my personal preference!).

EMF Protection Cell Phone Accessories (Gift Idea for a Techie!)

September 22, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

Are you concerned about exposure to electromagnetic fields and radiation through your cell phone? I get pretty freaked out when I think about this device and having it so close to my brain every time I’m talking on the phone, and so close to my body every time that I’m using it (which is approximately 55 times a day, just sayin’).  emf-protection-cell-phone-accessories

Vest sent me a few very interesting cell phone accessories that are designed to limit our exposure to these elements. I think they make really neat gift ideas for any friends who might be techies, or who might be the eco-friendly type and would appreciate keeping radiation away from themselves a much as possible.

After trying out the products for a while, here are my basic thoughts on them.

emf-protection-earphones-and-cell-phone-case

First, I want to talk about the cell phone case and the headphones. The case is ideal for the person who really wants to keep their case slim. It definitely falls into the slim category, and for some people, that’s fantastic. It won’t add a bunch of bulk or weight while also providing some protection to the device, and of course also providing protection against radiation, which is something you don’t get with other cases. But I will say that the overall protection for the device is not quite at the level that I want it to be at. I’d like to see a bigger lip around the phone, personally, to help ensure protection against the screen cracking.

The earphones are something truly unique that I’ve never seen before, and they are going to be a great gift choice for someone who prioritizes protection against radiation first and foremost, and doesn’t prioritize having a crystal-clear sound. The speakers are actually housed in a part of the devices that sits at chest level, and then the sound actually travels up to the earbuds through plastic tubes. It’s a very clever idea! If earbuds are purely functional for you then these are perfect. If you are an audiophile and you want to listen to music all day, you will likely be frustrated by this set, as you are having to sacrifice some sound quality for protection.

emf-protection-wallet-case

The wallet case got some high praise from my husband when he tried it out. He absolutely loved the idea of having a wallet and cell phone case combined together in one slim design, and he also loved the fact that you could turn the wallet into a cell phone stand. His only concern was that if you drop the wallet and on the way to the ground the flap flies up, leaving the phone exposed, the protection would be more limited and you’d probably find yourself with a cracked screen. So in his case, since we have young kids who use our phones, too, it was enough of a deal breaker for him to ultimately not switch out the case he has for this one. But if you are someone who doesn’t run a high risk of dropping your phone, then it’s really quite cool!

So all in all, Vest products do seem to offer fantastic protection to your body, but there are trade offs you have to make in order to get that protection. This makes them not right for every individual, but still a great choice for many folks and something to consider when working on your holiday gift ideas.

(Giveaway!) Gearing Up for Great by Inspiring Your Kids

September 20, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 31 Comments

Today’s post is brought to you in partnership with Office Depot® OfficeMax® and The Motherhood. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Are you back in your rhythm now that the kids are back in school, friends? I had some struggles finding my groove in the first few weeks, and I actually noticed that my kids were having a hard time, too. They were both facing some new challenges at school (multiplication for one, reading for the other) just as I was facing a rather dramatic increase in my workload, and I could see the stress and overwhelmed feeling on my face mirrored back to me in theirs.

So I decided that we ALL needed a morning affirmation to put us in the right frame of mind for the day. Here’s what we say each and every morning before the school day (and work day) begins:

Truth be told, I made this up on the spot one morning when I realized that we were all struggling and claiming defeat before the day had even started. But here’s why I picked the 3 statements that I chose:

  1. I’m ready to have a great day! There is so much power in deciding that the day is going to rock! As you think it, so it shall be, more often than not! 🙂 If you know at the start of the day that it is going to be a good one, then you can’t help but be excited about it.
  2. I’m excited about the challenges that await me! This is an acknowledgement that hard things are definitely going to be part of our great day. A great day does not equal an easy day. But those challenges are terrific opportunities to learn and grow, so BRING. THEM. ON!
  3. I will success because I will try! I’ve made sure that the girls understand that this doesn’t mean that you will master everything you try. It’s far more likely that you will make lots of mistakes and only master few things, if any, in a day’s time. But rather this means that the real success and the real source of pride comes more from the effort, and less from the outcome. Did you try? That’s what matters!

How are you inspiring your kids to greet each day with open arms and to believe that they can do hard things? I promise you, they are watching. Ever wonder what they are seeing? These parents found out (grab your tissues!!!).

Office Depot® OfficeMax® totally nailed it! We are inspiring our kids every single day, so I really want to encourage you to do your best to set the tone for greatness in your home. You may want to come up with your own daily affirmation (and if you do, please share it with us in the comments!).
