10 Baby Book Gift Ideas That Will Become Treasured Possessions

June 27, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

Enjoy today’s guest post from my friend Rebekah Gienapp. She is a true expert on outstanding children’s books and has some great baby book gift ideas for you all. I purchase Barefoot Books on the regular from her, and I’m always very pleased with my purchases. 🙂

Book Gift Ideas for Baby Showers

Books are my go-to gift at baby showers and at first birthday parties. Why? I love giving something that will encourage an experience between babies and their families. Books do that better than any toy I can think of. Some parents also aren’t aware of the benefit of reading daily with their babies, right from birth, and I like to subtly encourage that habit! Finally, I hope that parents will appreciate that I’m giving them something that is easy to store, and won’t take up a lot of space in baby’s bedroom (unlike certain massive toys given by certain in-laws if you know what I mean).

So how do you know which books are right for babies? Here are a few types of books I look for, followed by suggestions of specific titles available from Barefoot Books that fit within these types.

10 baby book gift ideas

High Contrast Books

This sounds like a fancy term, but high contrast just means colors that are easy to tell apart. Babies (especially newborns) are still developing their vision. They have a preference for black, white, and red because these colors are easy to distinguish. With younger babies, it’s important not to over stimulate them with illustrations that are too busy.

Baby Talk: Every pregnant friend receives this book from me because it has high contrast illustrations and it has a sweet message about love between baby and family members. Babies love to look at faces, and this book is filled with photographs of children and adults from diverse backgrounds.

Big and Small: This simple book with color high contrast pictures introduces the concepts of big and small through page spreads that feature concepts like a lion and a cat, and an apple and a seed.

Books with Rhyming Text

There’s a reason that Mother Goose nursery rhymes have long been staples for baby’s first books. The sounds we make when we talk or read mostly sound like chaos to infants. Rhyme and rhythm help babies to organize those sounds, even when babies don’t understand the words themselves. This helps them build listening, memory, and vocabulary skills over the long haul.

I Took the Moon for a Walk: It’s impossible not to look at the dreamy illustrations in this book and listen to the gentle rhymes without getting a bit sleepy yourself. The calming story follows a little boy who goes on a night time journey through his town with the moon as his guide.

Clare Beaton’s Nursery Rhymes set: Mother Goose’s classic rhymes have been given new warmth through Clare Beaton’s cozy fabric-inspired illustrations. Though the volumes are board books, I’ve often seen little ones reach out to touch the textures they see because they are so vivid. From action rhymes that teach babies finger play activities, to wild animals and farm animals, to rhymes that will make baby sleepy, this collection has every kind of rhyme you can think of.

Books that Introduce Basic Concepts

I’m a big believer in letting each child learn at her own natural pace. Reading books early on that introduce concepts such as counting, opposites, and the sounds of the alphabet, plant seeds of literacy that will bloom when the time is right.

Alligator Alphabet, Counting Cockatoos, and Octopus Opposites: This Baby Basics collection by Stella Blackstone features cheery, childlike illustrations. Babies tend to show a natural interest in animals, and these books build on that fascination to introduce letters, numbers, and opposites.

How Big is a Pig? Babies follow an inquisitive pig around the farmyard as he points out animals that are old and young, fat and thin, quick and slow. The rhyming text and quirky illustrations will always hold a special place in my heart because I remember the exact moment this book taught my son the difference between high and low.

Ship Shapes: This summery read gives babies a chance to find shapes on top of rolling waves and along the sandy shores. The rhyme and repetition help reinforce the shapes, as do the two full pages in the back that show each shape separate from the other illustrations.

Interactive Books

Some parents naturally seem to know how to help babies interact with books by pausing to ask questions. For those who may not be as confident, books that ask questions can help families learn how to help baby look for hidden items, or make predictions about what will happen next.

Who’s in the Garden?, Who’s in the Forest?, Who’s in the Farmyard? This set of peek-a-boo books is best for babies who are nearing age one because of the more complex illustrations. Each book asks questions (filled with rhyming text) about animals are found in each setting, giving babies and parents a chance to guess. The peek-a-boo holes are perfect for inserting finger puppets or small stuffed animals, or for just giving a baby a way to easily turn the pages.

The Sounds Around Town: Babies are of course delighted by sounds like the shake of a rattle or the honk of a horn, and love to imitate them. The Sounds Around Town is filled with dozens of new sounds to make as it follows a mother and toddler throughout their busy day, visiting the market, the park, a restaurant, and more.

Hidden Hippo: This rhyming book takes babies on a safari adventure where they can find the hippo hiding on every page. The many different animals in the story also provide an opportunity expand baby’s vocabulary.

I hope these baby book gift ideas help you out if you are looking for a unique baby shower gift or if you are putting together a baby book gift basket, or simply trying to add a few great books to your baby’s library. If you’d like more baby shower gift ideas, check out Tiffany’s post on baby toys for 6-12 month olds (many people buy baby shower gifts just for newborns and don’t think about the second half of the baby’s first year!).

Walmart Grocery Pickup Service: 5 Tips to Optimize This New Way to Buy Groceries

June 24, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 2 Comments

This review is not endorsed by Walmart. Referral links may be included. All opinions are my own.

I will always remember 2016 as the year that I stopped going to the grocery store. It started with my subscription to Shipt, which allows you to order groceries from Publix online and have Shipt shoppers buy the groceries for you and bring them straight to your house. It’s absolutely amazing, but not without it’s costs (the yearly membership fee is $99 and you get a slight upcharge in your groceries…nothing major, but it’s there…and tipping is not required but also not discouraged). It is the ultimate in stress-free shopping since you never leave your house and if you have a Publix nearby, it’s worth checking out (my referral link gets you $10 in free groceries and I believe they offer a 30 day free trial so you can try it out before committing to the membership fee).

So when I heard Walmart was in on the game to help busy moms like me take grocery shopping off their list of things to do, I was very intrigued. For me, another one of the problems with Shipt is the fact that Publix charges an arm and a leg for their produce, so I rarely buy any there. They do have excellent B1G1 sales, but beyond that, prices tend to be steep. So even when I’m using that service, I have to supplement with a trip or two to the grocery store to not totally blow our food budget each month. Walmart has the prices I like, but I don’t especially like having to go shopping there because it is hard to find help if you need it, and because I don’t like to go shopping with my kids (takes twice as long) and if I have time without the kids, grocery shopping is the last thing I want to do with that time.

Walmart is currently offering curbside pickup of your groceries, which you order online. As long as you order $30 or more of groceries, there is no charge and prices are no different from what you pay if you shop inside. And there’s no membership fee. The groceries don’t come to your house, but you only have to go to the parking lot to get your stuff.

It sounded almost too good to be true, but I’ve used the service 3 times now, and I LOVE IT!!!!

I wanted to offer some tips for your Walmart grocery pickup order to help you have a fantastic experience.

5 TipsFor WalmartGrocery Pickup

  1. Sign up through a friend so that you get $10 off your first order. This isn’t necessary, of course, but why not get $10 off? My referral link will hook you up!
  2. Put the Walmart grocery number in your contacts (it will be provided to you at checkout). You will receive a call when your order is ready, and you will call that number back when you are in the parking lot (there are designated parking spots for grocery pick ups). Best to have the number easy to recognize and access.
  3. Be prepared to grocery shop a day before you need your groceries. So far, every time I’ve tried to order groceries (and I’m always shopping very early in the morning) the first available pickup times are either late in the afternoon that day or even the following day. I’m sure they are working out supply and demand kinks, and I also have to remember that at least for now, Walmart is taking the financial hit here by hiring employees to shop for you without actually charging you more. So it’s not going to be as convenient as it possibly could be, and that’s ok by me. But don’t expect to grocery shop online and be able to pick up your stuff 2 hours later.
  4. Make use of the essentials section. Walmart keeps track of what you order, which is perhaps a little creepy, but also extremely helpful. If, for example, you have a favorite brand and flavor of almond milk, you can very quickly get it re-added to your cart just by looking over your essentials. It makes the online shopping experience take even less time, which is fantastic.
  5. Think beyond the grocery list. I added a pencil sharpener and printer paper to my last Walmart grocery order. It was no problem! I’m guessing that anything on Walmart.com that is listed as being available for same day store pickup is eligible to go on your order. Woo hoo!

I’m not sure how long Walmart can continue to offer this service without some sort of convenience charge, but for now, it’s completely free and definitely very convenient. Give it a try and see what you think!

Getting More Intentional About What I Feed My Cat

June 23, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

This post brought to you by Muse Cat Food. The content and opinions expressed below are that of Stuff Parents Need.

Tim and I brought our first baby home in June of 2005. Hattie, who was 3 years old at the time, was easy to spot in the cat shelter we visited that day. She was 12 pounds of fluff and full of personality; she was positively LIVID to be stuck in a cage, and we just knew we had to help her out.

photo muse cat food hattie 2_zpszs09ebsg.jpg

This cat was not getting to do enough posing in that cage. Posing, as she is doing above, is her absolute favorite thing to do. This little diva loves to be admired more than anything else.

We’ve been admiring Hattie for 11 years, now. I can’t believe how long she has been with us! She’s got 4 years on our oldest daughter, and she’s been with us so long that it is difficult to imagine our family without her.

 photo muse cat food Hattie_zps2g5ne9oe.jpg

I can’t control the fact that at some point, it will be her time to leave this world, but I have realized that I can help optimize her health by providing her with nourishing, natural food. We’ve been working on cleaning up our own eating habits over the last 6 years, or so; why not extend that same intention to what we are feeding Hattie?

Muse Cat Food has been a great option for us. Have you heart of it? This product comes in a wide variety of flavors, and each recipe is made with natural ingredients (real fish! real poultry!) and contains essential nutrients for a perfect combination of the taste your cat will enjoy and the benefits they need for good health. Muse Cat Food is also free of preservative, artificial flavors and colors, corn and soy, and has a nice selection of grain-free options.

photo muse cat food close up_zpsj6ydhddl.jpg

And since cats can be rather particular about their food (at least mine is!) it’s good to know that if your cat doesn’t want to eat it, you can get your money back! Visit MuseCatFood.com/clean-plate-guarantee to learn more about the Clean Plate Guarantee, and purchase without worry.

But I don’t think you’ll have to request your money back, friends. My Hattie goes absolutely bonkers every time I open a can of Muse Cat Food. She chomps and licks and feasts to hear heart’s content, and then she comes to find me and purrs like crazy to let me know how much she enjoyed it. I bet your kitty will love it, too.

Find Muse at Petco and bring some joy to your cat, and feel good knowing you are feeding him or her something that is so tasty and so full of natural, quality ingredients.

Keeping a Step Ahead of the Toilet Paper Bandit

June 23, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

This is a sponsored post for SheSpeaks/Walmart. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Excessive toilet paper use is my daughter’s. 😉

Do you have a toilet paper bandit in your house? I’m talking about the person who is responsible for a disproportionately large amount of the toilet paper use in your home.

I have one. Her name is Layah. I have spent countless hours talking with her about how much (or rather, how little) toilet paper she actually needs. But she can’t seem to wrap her head around the concept and continues to believe that more is more.

avoid the oops 1

After realizing that the house is 100% out of toilet paper one too many times thanks to this little t.p. fan, I’ve learned to avoid the oops by keeping a good supply on hand.

To do this, I just head over to Walmart.com and get stocked up on toilet paper and any other P&G household items I never like to run out of (this time it was toothpaste, toothbrushes, paper towels, dish detergent and floor cleaner). Did you know that you can get free shipping on Walmart.com orders over $50? Why make a trip to the store for these types of items when they can come right to your front door? My order arrived within just a few days of making the purchase.

avoid the oops 4

I think shopping online is one of my very favorite ways to go for bulky items that would take up a bunch of space in my shopping cart, and I also like just sitting down once a month, or so, and knocking out all of those items we use regularly and that would be disruptive to run out of. One of my all-time least favorite things to do is to have to make an emergency trip to the store and spend time I likely didn’t have and often overpay for items because I had to go to the closest retailer, and not necessarily the one with the best prices. Walmart.com gives me the right price, the convenience and the peace of mind so that I can carry on with my day. Head to AvoidTheOops.com to get all of your household necessities purchased and shipped straight to you.

avoid the oops 3

And if you have and tips for taming the toilet paper monster, leave a comment and help me out! 🙂

The Rug Doctor Experience: How A 24-Hour Rental Rocked My Home

June 21, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 2 Comments

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Rug Doctor for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

You’ve likely seen Rug Doctor in your local supermarket or home improvement store, tucked away in a little corner, looking like a fun-size version of Zamboni.

And you’ve wondered: can that thing really get my carpets cleaned? I mean, I have kids (or pets…or both), so is it actually up for the challenge or will this be a waste of money?

Well, let me tell you about my experience using Rug Doctor, and a few tips I have for maximum success.

 photo rug doctor locations_zpsghd3hiqi.jpg

I went to my nearest Rug Doctor rental location (1 mile from my house! There are 40,000 locations nationwide so odds are good that your nearest place is super close, too). I then picked out my Rug Doctor, I asked for the accessory devices so that I could do my upholstery…they don’t give it to you if you don’t ask, so be sure to request it!) and my cleaning supplies. Go ahead and go for the larger container of stuff. I’ll tell you why in a minute.

The instructions are impossible to lose because they are on the handle of the machine (excellent design!). You need hot water and the cleaning solution, a plug, and a surface that has already been vacuumed, and you are good to go. The device seems to spray the solution onto the carpet or upholstery and then very quickly vacuum it back up into the reservoir where all the dirty water is held. This is what doing half…just HALF of my 5×7 living room rug resulted in. EWWWW!

 photo rug doctor review_zpsdmk5er2y.jpg

The recommendation was to dispense of the dirty water in the toilet, so that’s the route I took. It was super humbling to see just how much dirt and grime was built up in my carpet. My carpet looked dingy, to be sure, but I couldn’t tell that it was THAT dirty just by looking at it. And honestly, now my living room not only looks better, but smells better, too.

I cleaned another area rug in a different room, and then I turned my attention to my cream colored couch, peppered liberally with stains, courtesy of my children. This was perhaps the most satisfying thing to clean because the difference was so dramatic.

 photo rug doctor attachments_zpsg0qz4ftt.jpg

In fact, once I saw just how great it looked, I realized that I was going to be keeping the Rug Doctor for another 24 hours (at my location, you are only charged $10 for another whole day) and would be cleaning my dining room chairs and all the carpet in my upstairs rooms. This is why I recommend that you go ahead and buy the larger cleaning fluid, because once you see how well Rug Doctor works, you are going to want to clean pretty much anything and everything you can. Our plans tonight before we take it back definitely include cleaning the upholstery in the car.

If you are super savvy you can get all of this done in just one day, but it will take some prep work before you head to the store. But whether you spend $30 to rent the machine for a day, spend another $10 to make it a weekend project, or go all in and purchase the Deep Carpet Cleaner or Portable Spot Cleaner (available on Amazon), you are going to LOVE the deep-clean results, and you’ll also love spending a fraction of what you would pay a professional for the same service.

And the actual cleaning is quick (most rooms can be cleaned in 20 minutes). It’s all the picking up you have to do before you use The Rug Doctor that takes forever! 😉 I highly recommend the Rug Doctor experience; find a rental location near you!

Time for a Summer Refresh: Living Room and Dining Room Makeover with Olympic Paint

June 21, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 3 Comments

Thanks to Olympic and The Motherhood for partnering with me on today’s post. Compensation has been provided. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Back in April I did a little internet exploring and started to think about a dramatic dining room makeover that would add a pop of color. Check out my post (and get inspired!) if you haven’t already seen it.

And I really was inspired by that exploration. The more thought that I gave to the matter, though, the more I realized that much of what I needed in our living room/dining room combo area was not only more pops of color, but also, more light! After visiting Sanibel Island with my family a few weeks ago, I felt a strong pull toward some of the colors of the beach, and I came up with this mood board to help me give our main dwelling area a big refresh.

living room olympic mood board delicate white

(Like the inspirations? Here’s where you can find the pillow, art, bowl and curtains).

Olympic Paint’s Delicate White reminds me so much of that gorgeous Gulf Coast sand that my family enjoyed being around for hours on end. I’ve never liked the tan color on my walls, and can you see why? These photos are so dark but I decided not to re-shoot them because honestly, this is the problem! For so much of the day the area my family hangs out in and the area I work in looks harsh and dark and artificial. A breath of fresh air by way of a new coat of paint has been long overdue!

olympic paint makeover before
Friends, a coat of paint is one of the most cost-effective ways to bring about a rather dramatic change to a room, and yet so many people don’t do it! We’ve lived with these awful tan walls for 4 years and the people who owned the house before us likely did the same thing (it looks like the color that contractors put up…who else would choose something so drab?). So I headed to Lowe’s, the exclusive home of Olympic Paints and Stains, and purchased 2 gallons of awesome.

olympic paint makeover 1

I was nervous about the color, but it took just a few rolls of the brush for me to know that something truly wonderful was about to happen in my home.

olympic paint makeover 2

Another thing that’s wonderful about painting a space in your home is that it can help you feel comfortable pulling the room together with the right decor elements. For example, in this space of ours, we have two windows. One set of windows had some sad beige sheers on them (leftovers from a previous home of ours) and the other window? It has been curtain-less since we moved in. I know! But I never felt like getting window treatments because it felt a little like putting lipstick on a pig. But with that beautiful Delicate White on the walls, I finally wanted to pull the room together and put a little effort into it.

Now our space looks like this:
olympic paint makeover after
I absolutely LOVE this part of my home, now! It feels light, airy, and best of all, intentional. I want to love on this space by decorating it a bit. I want to keep it (reasonably) clean. And I want to have people over to visit because the living and dining room area feels inviting and not crowded and dull and dark.

olympic paint makeover centerpiece

The space also reflects the people who live here and the things we say we want to prioritize, like making memories together around the dinner table, or enjoying each other’s company on movie night. We’ve created a place that encourages our family to sit and stay for a while rather than to just pass through the room.

how to store electronics basket idea

I think one of my favorite changes was tucking away the DVD player and Wii, which were just on the floor (I know! SOOO college apartment-like!) and now they are tucked away in a basket, discreetly hidden underneath a blanket. I didn’t want to invest in a piece of furniture that would take up precious space just to hold those items, so I thought outside the box and went for a basket. It works!

olympic paint makeover workbook section

I also found something to hold the activity books the girls are using this summer to avoid that dreaded summer slide. It might seem like an odd thing to put in the living room, but it reflects the fact that this is their home just as much as it is ours, and their items have a place here. Bonus points for the fact that this system cleared up a mountain of clutter. 🙂

And do you notice in the picture above where the new paint color stops and the old one starts back up again (heading toward the stairs)? I may have gone from one neutral color to another, but what a difference, right?!

If you are curious what a fresh coat of Olympic paint could do for a room in your house, there’s a really easy way to find out. Check out the Paint Visualizer. You can upload a photo of your own space and then virtually try out different Olympic paints to see how they would look. You can also head to Lowe’s to pick up some affordable Olympic paint samples if you want to put a few different colors on the wall side-by-side before you commit.

I hope I gave you a little inspiration. Take it from someone who lived for so long in a room that just wasn’t right; it’s a much easier fix than you realize, and it’s well worth the few hours it will take to paint. Now I love being in this space and my only regret is that I didn’t do this years ago. No day like today to get started on your room refresh, friend!

Pound-Wise and Penny-Foolish: 4 Ways I Save a Lot by Spending a Little More

June 21, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Disclaimer: This post was sponsored by OxiClean™ through their partnership with POPSUGAR. While I was compensated by POPSUGAR to write a post about OxiClean™ all opinions are my own.

When I think back over the last 14 years of my life (the time I’ve been fully self-reliant, financially), I can recall MANY examples of teaching myself how to cut corners and save as much money as humanly possible. In the beginning, that was a survival technique (being a grad student in one of the country’s most expensive cities was rough, ya’ll). Over time, though, being penny-wise also became a way to go from “getting by” to actually thriving. Clipping coupons, taking advantage of free entertainment, and trying to avoid restaurants were just a few of the strategies we used to help us build up a nest egg to put a down payment on a house, buy a car, and even start our family. I’m so glad I learned how to spend wisely.

Spending wisely is what I was to talk about today, because it’s a common misconception that spending wisely means always spending as little as you possibly can. Experience has taught me that there are cases where being penny-wise can cause you to be pound-foolish. Sometimes you will honestly come out money ahead by spending more on the front end. Today I want to share 4 simple ways I save quite a bit of money by spending a little more.

spend more to save more

1. Vacation in a Condo

My family just got back from a week of vacation on Sanibel Island, Florida. We stayed 7 nights in a 2-bedroom condo and our housing cost us right around $160/night. I can tell you now that many hotel rooms on the island charge around that same amount, but I did find one reputable hotel that offered a room for $99/night. So why would I spend over $1100 on housing when I could have paid around $700?
cooking on vacation to save money

Beyond the obvious benefit of comfort (1200 square feet of living space and separate rooms vs. roughly 300 square feet), there really is a cost benefit: the kitchen! Even if the hotel offered free breakfast, that still would leave my family to either eat pb&j sandwiches every single day for a week (no thanks) or having to go out to eat, which would cost hundreds of dollars. Because I rented a condo, I was able to shop for groceries at Publix, keeping food expenses lower, and I could get what I already knew my family would eat and enjoy, and I could prepare our meals while others played in the pool, napped, read, or did whatever they wanted to do, rather than driving over to a restaurant twice a day. The 3 adults on the trip took turns being in charge of food so that nobody felt overburdened with the task of meal prep, and none of us charged a gratuity! If we were in a hotel, we would have spent all the money we saved on housing on our food bill, easily. It’s my policy that if I’m staying somewhere for 3 nights or longer, I always upgrade to a home over a hotel room and I come out money ahead.

2. Buy a Superior Laundry Detergent

When people seek to save money, it always gives me a chuckle to see the things they tend to focus on as ways to save. Often they are very small things, like saving money on laundry detergent. Friends, I was that person several years ago who kept looking for ways to shave pennies off my expenses instead of looking for the ways to save hundreds of dollars. Are you doing the same thing? I’m certainly not making fun of you if you are, because I get it. It’s tempting to think that DIY stuff will make all the difference, and sometimes it does help the bottom line, but laundry detergent is not one of those areas, because you need to consider the whole picture here: you are dealing with the care of your clothing. The longer you can keep your clothes looking clean and bright, the longer you can wear them before needing to replace them.

best laundry detergent

Now I know better, and that’s why you’ll always find OxiClean™ HD™ Laundry Detergent in my laundry room. As my kids are growing, they are definitely putting more wear and tear on their clothes. OxiClean™ can’t help me with the holes in the knees of their pants that seem to pop up left and right, but stains? Not a problem! The stain fighter technology in OxiClean™ is worth every penny because I’m not losing outfits to a battle with marinara sauce, mud or markers. I also love OxiClean because it keeps the colors vibrant. My girls absolutely love to wear bright, bold colors and OxiClean™ helps the clothes maintain those awesome original hues.

colorful dress on the beach

OxiClean™ has also helped me stop being afraid to buy white clothing. For a long while there, I just stopped buying whites altogether, as I found that those clothes usually had set-in stains after one or two wears, and if they were lucky enough to escape stains, then they just became dingy. I started using OxiClean™ not long after my first was born (after a few rounds of destroyed white onesies, I got wise!) and I haven’t worried about my whites since. Pro tip: if you discover a stain on something in the hamper, add OxiClean™ directly to the spot for a little extra boost of stain-fighting power.

3. Subscribe to Digital Entertainment

Does a Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime or Sling TV subscription seem like an extra that just doesn’t make sense if you are trying to save? If you have no interest in television or movies, then I agree! But if you like to have movie nights at home (which is much cheaper than the borderline obscene cost of going to the movies), or if you like to unwind after the work day with a few episodes of a show you like, then the expense is SO totally worth it. The trick here is to cut your cable cord. I did it back in 2008 when my introductory cable subscription rate of $19.99/month ended and the price soared up to $80/month. I missed my beloved shows for about 4 days, and then I was over it. This was eight years ago, and now there are many MANY more options on digital formats. Spend the $20-$30/month on whatever combination of options make the most sense for you (for us it’s Netflix and Amazon Prime) and see how enjoyable they can be. Then let the cable go. You won’t feel denied of your favorites and you’ll actually save quite a lot of money, and even some time because commercials are either nonexistent or brief online.

4. Take Regular Trips to the Coffee Shop

I know, I know. I’m actually suggesting going out for coffee as a way to save? Doesn’t every money saving tip guide on the planet love to showcase how you can save thousands each year by ditching that beloved green mermaid? But hear me out. I’m not suggesting that you hit the drive thru on your way to work every morning or that you start buying Frappuccinos on the regular. But there is a place for a coffee shop visit, and here’s how it works for me. I personally head to Starbucks anywhere from 1-4 times during the work week. I go very early in the morning (6-8am) and I score 2 hours of uninterrupted work time during a time of day when my brain is working well (total morning person, right here). When I’m at home during this time, I’m helping make lunches, fielding 12,000 questions about life, searching for socks and shoes, brushing hair and doing other such things to help my kiddos get ready for school. My husband actually doesn’t mind flying solo during this lively period of time in the house, and I know from countless attempts that I can’t get a darn thing done, so it makes sense for me to fly the coop. I spend just under $2.50 for my tall iced coffee, and because I’m enrolled in the rewards program, I get a free refill. I am able to earn far more than that $2.50 by getting work done, and I’m much less stressed for the rest of the day, because my hardest work is already behind me by the time the rest of the family launches for the day. I suppose in this sense I don’t technically save money, but I free up time to make money, which is quite important if you want to have money to save in the first place!

I hope my tips provided some food for thought as you think about some ways that you might be being penny-wise and pound-foolish. Take a moment to think about a few simple changes you can make that might cost more today but help you save more over time. There’s no need to procrastinate on financial wellness!

Have any other tips about things that seem to cost more at first glance but that actually are great deals? I’d love to hear them!

How to Buy Camel Milk Online (and Why You Might Want To!)

June 20, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Over the weekend I posted on my personal Facebook page that I was about to sample some camel milk for the first time, sent to me by Desert Farms. I got such a kick out of the responses from my friends and family! Lots of people wanted to weigh in on this new culinary adventure I was about to have, and most people expressed various degrees of shock, curiosity, and confusion. I think this is because you can’t just roll up to your local grocery store and purchase some camel milk. In fact, in my 35 years on this earth, to my knowledge I have never once tried milk from a camel.

benefits of camel milk

So, yeah, it’s kind of a weird thing, at least here in the United States. But in many other parts of the world, camel milk is a common source of nutrition. If you want to read up on the benefits of camel milk, click here, but the Cliff’s Notes version is that it’s a fantastic source of vitamin B1, calcium, phosphorous, potassium and protein. Also? I think it tastes very similar to cow milk (something I love but that I’m starting to suspect that my body isn’t as crazy about as it used to be…hence starting to seek out some alternatives for myself).

camel milk benefits

After trying out camel milk by simply tasting it, I felt comfortable to do a little baking with it. I actually made gluten-free chocolate chip scones, and I thought the camel milk performed just as well as cow milk does in this recipe. In other words, I had great results!

After my experiments with camel milk, I can say that I personally found it to be very similar in taste to cow milk (I thought it had a slightly nutty flavor as the key difference). The taste is similar enough for me to be willing to drink a glass of it all by itself (which honestly is the ultimate test! It took me several weeks to work up to doing that with almond milk!). And I thought it substituted for cow milk in a recipe without issue.

Camel Milk: Where to Buy

If you are looking for a super awesome alternative to cow milk, you really should give camel milk a try. Desert Farms has all of their farms in the United States and would love to provide camel milk to your families. The dairies are small right now, with each member farm having just between 2 and 20 camels, but as demand increases, plans for expansion are underway (and this will also help with bringing the price down…right now there are 18,000 cows for every 1 camel in the United States!).

And now through July 6th, Deserts Farms is offering an extremely generous 40% off sale of their 8 oz camel milk products, so there has never been a better time to take the plunge and try something new!

And here’s that scone recipe to try out once your camel milk arrives!

gluten-free chocolate chip scones

Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Scones with Camel Milk

  • 2 1/2 cups Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2  teaspoons baking powder
  • 6 tablespoons cold butter, cut into small chunks
  • 3/4 cup raw camel milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 Tbsp coconut sugar (or other sugar of choice)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lightly grease a scone pan
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder until well mixed. Add the butter, working it in with a pastry cutter or with your hands until it is very crumbly.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine camel milk, eggs and vanilla. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir a few times, and then add the chocolate chips. Mix together until well combined.
  4. Transfer the dough into the 8 sections of the scone pan. Sprinkle the coconut sugar on top of each scone.
  5. Bake the scones for 20 minutes and let cool in the pan for 5 minutes prior to serving.

This is How We Do It (Where Have You Done It?)

June 19, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

I’m a Netflix Stream Team member and receive complimentary streaming service. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Let me make a list for you of just some of the places I’ve done it:

  • the bathroom
  • the bedroom
  • the closet
  • the kitchen counter
  • the living room
  • the back deck
  • various hotel rooms
  • on the interstate
  • multiple airports

The Netflix Sneak

I’ve had to sneak in a little Netflix at SO many different places. As a busy mom, if I want to watch anything at all I have to be willing to watch it in 5 or 6 minute stints while folding laundry, waiting for a child to finish getting dressed, sitting in the carpool line, etc. And I get very dedicated to this pursuit of finding those little pockets of time when I am in the middles of going through an entire series (currently I’m watching Gilmore Girls…for the first time, actually!).

And since the new season of Orange is the New Black just came out, I’m oscillating between the two shows. I’d love to hear what you are binge-watching right now (and yes, even if it takes you 2 days to work through an episode you are still binge watching, just at a slow pace!).

Need some suggestions? Here’s what just launched:

Scandal (Season 5)

Pretty Little Liars (Season 6)

Movie: The Giver

And where are you when you sneak in those precious minutes to watch what’s streaming on Netflix? Any locations I haven’t yet thought of?
