The Danish Way of Reframing and How It Works with Children

Enjoy today’s guest post. It’s fascinating! 🙂

The Danish Way of Reframing and How It Works with Children

danish parenting

Reframing with children is about the adult helping the child to shift focus from what they think they can’t do to what they can do. The adult helps the child see situations from different angles and gets them to focus on the less negative outcomes or conclusions. With practice, this can become a default setting—for both parent and child.

When you or your children use limiting language like “I hate this,” “I can’t do it,” “I am not good at that,” and so on, you create a negative storyline. The plot may have us convinced that we aren’t good at anything or we are doing everything wrong. The more a child is told limiting stories about “how he is” or how he should do or feel things in various situations, they begin to build coping strategies based on a distrust of their own abilities in the face of new challenges. “She isn’t very good at sports” “He is so messy”; “She is too sensitive.” These are all very defining. The more of these children get, the more negative conclusions about themselves they get.

To reduce the problem, it helps to find and create a different narrative for your children. Leading them to a new, broader or more ambiguous picture about themselves and the world around them helps them to reframe. And this skill will transfer over into how they learn to see and interpret life and others as well.

In Iben’s practice as a narrative psychotherapist, she focuses a lot on reframing and, even more in-depth, on “reauthoring.” She helps people look at the beliefs they have about themselves and the beliefs they put onto their kids without realizing it. Saying things like “He is antisocial,” “She isn’t very academic,” “He is terrible at math,” or “She is so selfish,” are all statements that become behavior your children try to make sense of and identify with. Children can hear you say these things much more often than parents realize they can. Soon, they believe that it must be how they are. When new behavior doesn’t fit into this label, they don’t even try to make sense of it because they have already identified themselves as being uncoordinated, shy, or terrible at math.

The language we use is extremely powerful. It is the frame through which we perceive and describe ourselves and our picture of the world. Allan Holmgren, a well-known Danish psychologist, believes that our reality is created in the language we use. All change involves a change in language. A problem is only a problem if it is referred to as a problem.

The Danish way of reframing

Danes, on the whole, use less limiting language and don’t tell children how they are or what they think they should do or feel in different situations. You don’t hear a lot of adult opinions being placed on children. “You shouldn’t be like that.” “Don’t cry.” “You should be happy!” “He is mean!” “He shouldn’t be like that.” “You should tell him next time!”

They tend to focus more on using supporting language, which leads children to understand the reasons for their emotions and actions. If they are upset or angry, for example, they try to help a child become aware of why they feel that way rather than saying how they should or shouldn’t be feeling.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“You look like something is wrong—is there?”

“Yeah.”

“What’s going on?”

“I don´t know.”

“Are you sad? Angry? Happy?”

“I am sad.”

“Why do you feel sad?”

“I am sad because Gary took my doll at playtime.”

“He took your doll. Why do you think he took your doll?”

“Because he is mean.”

“You think he is mean? Is Gary always mean?”

“Yes.”

“But last week you said you played a lot with Gary, right?”

“Yes.”

“Was he mean then?”

“No.”

“Ok, so sometimes Gary is nice?”

“Yes. Sometimes he is nice.”

They are good at helping their children conceptualize their emotions and then guiding them into finding something more constructive, instead of a disparaging or limited belief. This is the heart of reframing.

“So what happened when he took your doll?”

“I cried.”

“So you were sad he took your doll. I can understand that. What do you think you could do differently next time if Gary takes your doll so you won’t be sad?”

“I can tell him to give it back. Or I can tell the teacher.”

“I think telling him to give it back sounds like a good solution. Does Gary like to play with dolls?”

“Sometimes.”

“Is there anything else you could do other than ask for it back?”

“Maybe we could play together with the dolls.”

“That sounds like a great solution. We know Gary is actually a sweet boy so next time you can ask if he wants to play dolls too.”

“Yes!”

Finding the brighter side of things can be done with all kinds of situations, not only with people. With practice it becomes much easier to scan a scene and find the hidden details that reframe a situation into something more constructive. It can even be fun to do.

Once a child finds a better alternative storyline, try to repeat it so it sticks. But the solution should ultimately come from the child herself. This builds real self-esteem because they become the master of their own emotional responses. They aren’t told how to feel and act.

If we hold on to the good in people, to separate actions from the person, we teach our children that we forgive them when they themselves misbehave. Imagine if we had said that what Gary did was
ridiculous and mean. Children will remember that. When it’s our own child who is doing something similar next time, they know that we judge. If we trust other people and know how to forgive, we teach our children that we also forgive them when they misbehave. If we maintain that it is human to fail, and that we can see other positive things despite that truth, our children will also be gentler on themselves when they fail.

Find It! Awesome Contained Adventure Game for Travel or Quiet Time

August 9, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Every time we are preparing for a long car trip, my husband and I seem to struggle a bit to come up with things to pack for the kids to play. The iPad is an obvious choice, but we don’t want them watching videos for 5 straight hours, so we need some other activities. We usually pack a coloring book for each child and some crayons, and we also pack some smaller stuffed animals or figurines (such as My Little Pony). But all of these items, for the most part, seem to only hold their attention for about 1/10th as long as we had hoped they would.

The struggle is very, very real.

So when Find It! Games reached out to me to tell me about some of their concentration building games, I was very intrigued. Something that will actually hold a child’s attention for a long period of time? I’ll be the judge of that.

find it mythical adventure

We were sent the Find It! Mythical Creatures edition, and it’s a tube filled with tiny beads, as well as 41 hidden treasures waiting to be found. The list alone will be fun to work through, as you will likely have to look up a few of them online just to know what they look like! Here’s the list of what you’ll find inside every tube:

  • Basilisk
  • Bigfoot
  • Centaur
  • Cerberus
  • Chupacabra
  • Coin for Charon
  • Cupid’s Arrow
  • Cyclops Eye
  • Dragon
  • Elf Hat
  • Fairy
  • Gargoyle
  • Genie’s Lamp
  • Giant
  • Gnome
  • Graeae’s  Tooth
  • Griffin
  • Harpy
  • Hippocampus
  • Hippogriff
  • Jackalope
  • Jersey Devil
  • Kraken
  • Leprechaun Gold Coin
  • Loch Ness
  • Manticore
  • Medusa
  • Mermaid
  • Minotaur
  • Mothman Eye
  • Mystery Item
  • Pegasus
  • Penny
  • Phoenix Feather
  • Salamander
  • Silver Bullet
  • Sphinx
  • Tree Spirit
  • Troll
  • Uicorn
  • Vampire Bat

Once you understand what you are looking for, the fun really begins! I have to say, the kids actually will sit still for quite some time seeking out the different items! This makes it the absolute perfect item to break out on long car trips or even plane trips, as it will fit inside a kid’s backpack as part of the carry-on. I also think it’s a great option for quiet time (which is what I call nap time now that my kids don’t nap anymore…mama still needs 20 minutes of quiet!). I’ve reached for it a few times, myself. It’s really fun to sit down and just search for a bit!

The Ultimate List of Pokemon Halloween Costumes

August 1, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 6 Comments

Affiliate links may be included.

Pokemon Go has completely blown up around the world, and that means that Pokemon Halloween costumes are going to be THE thing to wear this year. The good news is that unlike the few years that Frozen dominated the scene and every third trick-or-treater was either Anna, Elsa or Olaf, there’s a heck of a lot more variety in the world of Pokemon.

I’m making a list of the Pokemon characters and trainers, and I have to be honest, this is a big undertaking! I’m adding more content every single day and as more costumes become available I will do my best to keep this list updated. I have no doubts that costume companies and Etsy store owners are frantically making as much Pokemon as they can in light of the incredible hit of the app. At this point, in many cases shirts are about as close to a costume as I can find. Hopefully as Halloween draws closer I’ll find some new actual costumes for many of the characters! Also please note the sizes when reviewing costumes. Some items are sized for adults, and some are sized for children. With the DIY ideas, you should be able to modify things fairly easily if I’m showing options for an adult and you need a child, or vice versa. And if you need extra help, let me know and I’ll help you hunt!

If you know of a costume that I haven’t linked to or couldn’t find what you were looking for here please let me know in the comments so that I can get it added for future readers.

Friend it Forward with My Little Pony! Mid-Season Premiere and Donation Opp

July 30, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Any My Little Pony fans out there? We LOVE MLP, and are even currently reading the Adventures of Daring Do, which as you may know is Rainbow Dash’s favorite book series. I don’t blame her; they are super fun!

My_Little_Pony_Friendship_Day

Today (July 30th) is the mid-season premiere of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, airing at 11:30am EST on Discovery Family Channel. It will be followed by a mini-marathon of friendship-themed episodes. No cable? No worries! The episodes will be available on iTunes, Google Play and Amazon starting July 31st.

How to #FrienditForward

Between now and August 31st, Hasbro is going to be looking for acts of friendship online through social media posts that are tagged with #FriendshipisMagic and #FrienditForward. If you post something with those two hashtags, Hasbro will make a $1 donation (up to $50,000) to generationOn, which is the youth division of Points of Light. On this website you can also find helpful tools and resources to engage in acts of friendship through service opportunities.

Get Inspired

Need a little inspiration for your act of friendship? Look to your pony friends for some ideas! Here are some of the things that your favorite characters might be doing today and that you could do, too!

  • PINKIE PIE: Make a special gift for a friend’s birthday!
  • FLUTTERSHY: Offer to take your friend’s pet out for a walk!
  • RARITY: Let a friend borrow your favorite outfit for a special occasion!

My family will be doing an act of friendship on Instagram later today, so be sure to watch for us! Let me know if you do one, too!

Instant Coffee Makes Great Iced Coffee! My Best Instant Iced Coffee Recipe

July 28, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Affiliate links included. I promote only what I use and love!

I consider myself to be a bit of an iced coffee expert. I drink it every single day, and most days I make it myself. I’ve tried cold brew, brew over ice, brewing with freshly ground beans vs. previously ground beans, and by using a pour over brewer.

And with necessity being the mother of all invention, I have also taught myself how to make iced coffee using instant coffee, because there are occasions where I find myself in need (it’s not a want, it’s a need) of some iced coffee and not in a place with a coffee shop or a coffee maker.

And now you know why I have instant coffee crystals in my purse at all times.

What you need to rock an instant coffee iced coffee is some instant coffee crystals, a little bit of hot water, and your desired extras (sweetener and cream).

Start with 1/4 cup of super hot water. You can get that from the lowest setting on your Keurig, you can get it by putting your coffee cup and water in the microwave, or you can get it through a tea kettle. The world is your oyster! 😉

Add a heaping tsp of instant coffee crystals to your hot water and give it a good stir. If you want to add a sweetener, now’s a good time to add that, too (my go-to is the liquid Stevia because I never have to worry about if it will dissolve quickly and because one tiny bottle lasts forever!).

Now it’s time to pile on the ice (as much as you like) and then add your creamer, if desired. It’s perfectly fine that a lot of the ice is going to melt. You created hot coffee that was far too concentrated, so it evens out to perfection. Now take a sip of the best instant iced coffee ever, friend, and never worry that you’ll be more than a few minutes away from this awesome drink again. 🙂

The Secret to Naturally Get Rid of Cellulite: 2 Things That Make All the Difference!

July 27, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

I am sharing my own personal experience with naturally getting rid of cellulite, but I am not offering medical advice of any sort.  Please consult your physician should you have any medical questions or concerns. Essential oils have not been tested by the FDA.  Affiliate links included. I love promoting what rocks my world!

I’ve had quite a few follow-up questions from readers hit my inbox after publishing about essential oils for weight loss and how I use them to get ready for swimsuit season. Many folks asked me about how to deal with stubborn cellulite that seems to hang on for dear life, even in the midst of following a healthy diet and giving our bodies the exercise they need.

get rid of cellulite naturally

Good news, frustrated friends: I have some tips to offer! You can, in fact, naturally get rid of cellulite, but the reason that so many people don’t have success doing so is because they are going about it the wrong way, and because they are unwilling to be patient. If you want to get rid of cellulite quickly you are going to need to rethink your definition of quick. I’m just gonna put that out there first thing. Cellulite is really tough to get rid of and requires time and consistency with your approach. If you are willing to be consistent with  your essential oils for cellulite reduction, then you will see that you can, in fact, get rid of your cellulite. But if you try these suggestion for a week and then quit, expect to see pretty much no results.

Ok, so here’s the thing about fat cells: they serve as a toxic waste dump for the liver when the liver is having trouble processing all the toxins that come its way. Poor diet and environment can easily overwhelm the liver, and the fat cells are happy to hang on to all that excess junk. So one important thing most people don’t realize is that if you want to attack the fat cells, you need to attack the toxins. Essential oils LOVE to gobble up toxins, and that makes them a secret weapon in the fight against excess fat.

essential oils for cellulite reduction

I approach getting rid of cellulite naturally from the inside as well as the outside. Once a day I put 2 drops of Slique Essence into my water and drink it. This gets those great essential oils into my body to do the dirty work I need them to do on the inside. The essential oils in this blend include grapefruit, tangerine, spearmint, lemon and ocotea. These are some of the best essential oils for cellulite. Think of them each as hungry little oils who whose favorite food is the toxins sitting in the fat cells you want to eliminate!

Additionally, I use Cel-Lite Magic, a massage oil put out by Young Living, to attack cellulite from the outside (want a non-MLM alternative? I get it! This one has great reviews). I find this oil, over time, to help with the appearance of cellulite from the outside, which is what we are all looking to improve. But again, don’t forget about all those fat cells you can’t see! I personally use this on the back of my thighs and on my rear, as these are the two places where my cellulite is the most obvious. I’ve heard from other women that they enjoy using it on their stretch marks, as well. I recommend applying this product just before you go work out, and if you aren’t hitting the gym, just put it on at the start of your day so that as you move around and exercise naturally, the oils are in place to fight hard for you and to help amplify any exercise you might be doing that day to also encourage excess fat to take a hike.

Drinking a lot of water is also critical any time you are trying to help your body flush out toxins. The essential oils will be working hard to break down those fat cells by way of breaking down toxins, but you need to provide plenty of water to help the trash get swept out of the body and not just reabsorbed. For bonus points, incorporate dry brushing into your daily routine to help your lymphatic system perform at an optimal level. If you are wondering, “what is dry brushing?” just click the link to find out!

If you are ready to fight your cellulite, I strongly recommend Slique Essence and Cel-Lite as part of your daily regimen. It is so important to be consistent and to plan on doing this for at least a month, if not more. Cellulite wins so many battles because it takes an entire war and not just one battle to defeat it. But you absolutely, positively can! Make use of the amazing power of essential oils as a key weapon, friends.

(Jogging Stroller Giveaway!) Summer Fun Ideas to Try with Your Toddler

July 25, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 149 Comments

Friends enjoy this fun partnered post from Shopko and Southern Made Simple, where you will find my awesome little sister, Laura!

When my baby girl decided to take her first steps back in March, she made it very loud and clear that she was tired of being cooped up in our house all winter long. She loves playing and exploring outside more than anything, and she was definitely ready to start enjoying the warm spring and summer air. After all, she had a new found freedom in her ability to walk, and there was so much she was ready to discover outside the four walls of our home! Her interest and curiosity about the outdoors came as somewhat of a surprise to me, because I have always preferred indoor playtime over being outdoors. Once summer is in full swing here in south Alabama, the heat alone is enough to make you never want to leave your beloved air conditioner!

However, I knew that it would be important for me to nourish my toddler’s curious side and get her acquainted with mother nature. I also knew that it would be important for my own sake to find a healthy balance in enjoying our outdoor summer time activities by incorporating things that would be both fun and interesting for both toddler AND mommy.

So far this summer we’ve found several fun ways for us to get outdoors, get active and enjoy the sweet sunshine and summertime. If you’re looking for ways to get outdoors with your little one this summer, here are a few great idea starters to help you enjoy your time to the fullest!

Plan a Picnic/ Play at the Park

  • Even though we live in a very rural area, we still are fortunate enough to have a few local parks that children and adults can enjoy. Planning a picnic at the park is a great way to get out of the house, get some fresh air and let the kiddos get some play time in without spending any money. Depending on how hot it gets in your area, you may want to plan the trips to the park during the early morning or late afternoon to avoid being out in the heat of the day. Make sure to stay hydrated and find a shady spot to enjoy! My daughter and I have loved our play dates at our local park and have been enjoying the simple things that bring out the fun in our day, like playing on the swings and running through the grass!

Make a Splash

  • If it seems too hard to escape the heat, make a splash in the pool! We like to join our cousins for a swim in their own backyard pool. If a backyard swimming pool isn’t readily available to you, take a look around town and see if there are any public water parks or pools that are either free or charge a small admission fee. There’s sure to be a park or splash pad near you that you and your little ones can cool down in while playing and having fun with others. If you’re feeling up to it, pack your bags and plan a beach or water park vacation! Enjoying the water is a great way to spend time with family and enjoy the outdoors during the summer, so put on that sunscreen and start making some waves!

Bring Story Time to Life

  • Sometimes going outdoors just isn’t feasible every day during the summer. The summer months here are notorious for having random pop up showers that can last anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours. When the weather just isn’t cooperating, we break out our favorite books that help bring the outdoors inside! Currently, my daughter is ALL about the animals. She loves learning new noises that certain animals make, and she’s started learning how to point out which animal is which. One AWESOME way to help bring story time to life is to visit the zoo and see all of those animals in real life! My daughter has been busy learning about farm animals, so we thought a visit to see her Grandaddy’s cows would be a fun treat for her!

  • If story time is something your kids might enjoy, check your local libraries to see if they offer any summer reading camps or programs that help kids explore their imagination and exercise their minds! You can even sign up for a library card and stock up on books to help keep your kids occupied when outdoor play time isn’t an option.

Take a Stroll

  • My favorite way for my daughter and I to enjoy the outdoors together is go for a stroll/jog down our road or on the walking trails at the park. We usually do this once a week or so in the late evening when it starts to cool down. It gives me the exercise my body craves and needs while allowing my daughter to relax and and catch a breeze while we move. She’s definitely been enjoying the view from her sweet new ride, the J is for Jeep Brand All-Terrain Jogging Stroller. It’s been SO influential in steering my sails to get outside with my daughter and get moving. Before this jogging stroller, trying to walk my daughter up and down our road was a nightmare! We live on a dirt road and the terrain is really tough, but this particular stroller seems to glide over it with ease and makes for a much smoother trip. I don’t know how we ever functioned without it, honestly!

stroller2

When we’re out on the walking trails or jogging down the dirt road, we simply lock the front wheel to help keep the stroller in place and not wobbling back and forth. Before this stroller, the plastic swivel wheels on our previous stroller would get hung up every few feet traveled. It was enough to drive you bonkers, especially if you were trying to exercise! It also comes with a safety harness to wear around your wrist to prevent the stroller from getting away from you. I really appreciate the peace of mind that gives, because it can be really easy to have a stroller roll away from you when you’re going down a hill or if you’re near a ditch.

stroller11

And can I brag for just a minute about how spacious the undercarriage is?! I mean, I feel like I can pack almost anything under there! It easily fits a large diaper bag and a small cooler. I can pack several drinks and snacks and take them along on our adventures with us! I also appreciate the space up top for holding keys, drinks, iPods, etc. Those are things I typically need quick access to, and I don’t want to have to fumble through my bags to try to find them. In the J is for Jeep Brand All-Terrain Jogging Stroller, they’re right at my fingertips the entire time!

stroller4

All features of the stroller are easy to adjust and it’s incredibly easy to fold. In just two simple and quick motionss, the stroller is folded and ready to put away! I will say that this particular stroller does not fold down compact at all in comparison to other traditional strollers. It takes up almost the entire space of our trunk in our mid-sized SUV, so that’s something to consider if you’re in the market for a stroller.

My daughter and I have been enjoying our outdoor adventures this summer and have had a blast keeping ourselves entertained through play, picnics, water fun and especially our mid-afternoon strolls. If you’re looking for ways to beat summer boredom and get outside with your little ones, I highly encourage you to look for ways to incorporate the suggestions listed above into your summer schedule. And if you’re looking for a way to enjoy the outdoor time as much as your little one does, definitely check out the J is for Jeep Brand All-Terrain Jogging Stroller! It’s got everything you need to make your outdoor summer days the very best!

Win It!

5 Craziest Things Pregnancy Does to Your Body and Mind

July 20, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Friends enjoy today’s guest post and please pass it along to your pregnant friends who are likely asking themselves, “Is this normal?!”

Ah yes, the moment you find out the pregnancy is positive, you gush into the room with a variety of questions crossing your mind, what are you going to name the baby? Is it a girl or a boy? Should you start shopping for the baby already? After it’s all settled and the news has been conveyed, you’re bound to wonder what’s next. Thanks to our mother’s horror stories and romantic comedies, we all know pregnancy is no child’s play (literally). Although we’re all well aware symptoms like nausea, fatigue and back pain are common symptoms associated with pregnancy, here are the craziest things pregnancy does to your body and mind that no one has ever told you.

is this normal during pregnancy-

  1. Memory loss

Regardless of what you’ve said, memory loss may be a common symptom for many, and this is bound to occur after a few months into the pregnancy, usually when the other symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, back pain are the greatest. You may experience a lack of ability to concentrate, losing your train of thought and disruption in memory. In certain cases, these symptoms are sometimes confused with Alzheimer’s disease by people. But this is nothing to worry about as this is a common symptom associated with pregnancy. Research from Mayo clinic does support the fact that growing bump can impair memory due to lack of sleep, hormonal changes and disquiet of an impending major life change.

  1. Your breasts may start leaking out of nowhere

We all know how breasts start producing milk when a baby is born. But surprisingly, this isn’t always the case; sometimes a pregnant woman or even a newly pregnant woman’s breasts may start producing breast milk out of nowhere. This is referred to as lactating. The crazy part here is, sometimes breasts may start lactating just by hearing a baby cry, and this baby not necessarily has to be theirs. So try avoiding bra-less days or white T-shirt outings, unless you want to cause a traffic pile up. Guess movies don’t tell you everything after all.

  1. Extra saliva

This may sound super weird, but it’s true. Quite a lot of women are said to produce more saliva than usual. The cause of this may still be unknown. Changing hormones is usually the cause assumed sometimes or nausea could also be another reason as an excess amount of saliva is typically a body warning mechanism trying to tell you that you’re about to enter the puke city.

  1. Higher Sex Drive

This is usually said to occur as soon as the symptoms such as tiredness that often happen in the first few weeks fade away. You’re revved up sex drive likely goes through the roof, even when your partner is more than satisfied. Also, this is liable to continue until the day of delivery (surprise surprise). According to a recent made for mums survey, 21% of the women are likely to experience a higher sex drive during pregnancy. Moreover, blood volume is said to increase during pregnancy. The volume of plasma increases 40-50% and red blood cell mass 20-30% increasing arousal.

  1. Heightened sense of smell

During pregnancy, your nose may be prone to catching scents which you’re likely to ignore on average days. This can either work in your favour or not. For people enjoying certain kind of smells such as the smell of coffee or newly baked beef etc. this could feel absolutely fantastic, but bad smells may smell ten times more as well. This could make going to public toilets a total disaster and in some cases even certain food may end up making you want to gag. Research shows that this heightened sense of smell is usually due to increased estrogen which affects the olfactory system in the body.

Despite the positive and negative aspects of pregnancy, you may find some of these changes your body makes quite absurd. But trust us; nothing can be as beautiful and wonderful as bringing another life into this world. So just sit back and relax, being pregnant does have its privileges as well, it’s not everyday people throw parties for you and bring in all sorts of stuff they might think you need.
