Kitchen Quick Tips: 3 Things I Do To Save Lots of Time in the Most-Used Room of the House

June 16, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 2 Comments

Aside from my work space (which is at home), I spend more of my awake hours in the kitchen than I do any other home in the house. If you regularly prepare meals, the odds are good that this is true for you, as well.

But is it the room where you want to spend the majority or your time, or would you really love to reclaim a bit of the time you spend there for other things? For me, I crave any and all tips that can help me save time in the kitchen because frankly, I just have other places I’d rather be!

Here are 3 things that have helped me cut back on my hours logged in this particular room of the house. I hope they help you!

3 Time-saving kitchen hacks

  1. Take Out the Garbage Less

No, I’m not advocating for you to make a statement with your family and let the garbage just start overflowing until someone else finally takes it out (though I do understand if you feel tempted for this reason, believe me!). But rather, I’m talking about using the right product so that you don’t have to worry that if you pack down the garbage a time or two that the bag will break when you are trying to take it out. I’ve purchased “bargain” bags before and found myself taking out the trash much more often for this exact reason. In the end I didn’t save money because I went through the bags quickly and I certainly didn’t save any time.

hefty bags

Hefty Ultra Strong trash bags are an excellent choice if you are tired of having to stop and take out the trash in the middle of dinner prep every night. The durability of these bags means you don’t have to worry about how full your garbage can gets before you have to stop and take it out. Go ahead and push that pile down a time or two to compact it. No judgement from me!

2. Let Someone Else Plan the Meals

Again, don’t misunderstand me and think I’m suggesting that your 7-year-old gets to decide what’s for dinner every night, unless you want to eat ice cream and no veggies (that’s what my oldest would suggest). But a little internet research can help you discover a treasure trove of pre-made menu plans that can make your life SO much easier. I happen to use a paid option (#wortheverypenny) but you can easily find free meal plans, too, complete with grocery lists to help you spend less time in the grocery store. Pro tip: look for 30 minute meals or easy meals or something similar to further cut back on time spent in the kitchen!

3. Use the Right Tools

pan and knife

Ok, so at some point you’ve just got to cook, and when that time comes, it is SO important that you have quality tools to help you get through the prep and cooking process efficiently and effectively. Take a minute to think about the quality of your cookware and your knives, in particular. If they are struggling, then replace those items ASAP because I promise you, they are costing you time! Anyone who has ever tried to chop vegetables with a dull knife or tried to skillet fry something in an uneven pan can attest to what I’m saying. The initial cost will pay for itself over and over again in the time you’ll save over the coming years, I promise.

I hope I’ve given you a little inspiration for some ways you can save yourself some time in the kitchen. And if you like saving time, you also probably like saving money, so be sure to head over to Walmart or Target ASAP to pick up some Hefty Ultra Strong trash bags. They top quality in performance and are currently selling at a new, lower price (woo hoo!). And if you use the Ibotta app, you can also earn $1.00 cash back after purchasing one box of Hefty trash bags.

I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

Dollywood Trip Planning: Tips and Tricks for a Smooth First Visit

June 15, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 6 Comments

Thanks to Dollywood for providing complimentary admission. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

Last week my family loaded up in the car bright and early and made the trek up from Chattanooga to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee to have the Dollywood experience for the very first time.

You might have found this post because you are doing research on Dollywood tips to ensure you make the most of your visit. I want to share some of my insights with you to help make your trip outstanding!

Dollywood tips

Tip #1: Buy Tickets Before You Arrive

The lines are lengthy to purchase tickets on site, so do yourself a favor and get your tickets early. I promise you won’t regret it!

Tip #2: Look Carefully at Ticket Options

If you live within striking distance of Dollywood, look carefully at the Season Pass option, because it costs less per person than paying the day admission costs twice. Alternatively, if you know you will only be in the area once but you’d like to spend a few days enjoying Dollywood and the water park (Splash Country) you can purchase a 3 day pass for $99 per ticket, which costs less than the Season Pass option. Bottom line: the one day ticket is the highest per use cost, and if there’s any chance at all that you’ll be spending more than one day on site, you can save money by getting a different package.

Tip #3: Choose Your Date Wisely dollywood with kids

We visited the park on a Wednesday, which the website lists as typically being a lower traffic day. There were still plenty of people there, but we never waited more than 15 minutes for a ride (and for most attractions we waited closer to 5 minutes). I highly recommend using this strategy if you are traveling with little ones who struggle to stay patient in long lines. Also on low traffic days it’s easier to snap fun photos like this one! 🙂

Tip #4: Download the App

There’s an app for Dollywood, and it’s very helpful when trying to check out ride wait times in the park. It’s free and very worth your time!

Tip #5: Get to Know the Shows

best shows at dollywood

The week of your trip, you can go online to the show calendar to see what performances will be offered, or you can pick up a daily schedule in the park (not every performance is happening every day). It’s a good idea to read through show descriptions before you go to the park and to write down the shows you think you and members of your party will enjoy. Then you’ll be better able to make a choice about which ones to see once you are on site. We showed up just a minute or two before each performance was scheduled to begin and got some of the last seats each time, so I recommend showing up maybe 10 minutes early if you don’t want to cut it too close and potentially be turned away. I personally recommend the Dreamland Drive-In (it’s an hour long so little kids might get squirmy, but the singing is excellent!), the bird show and Heartsong was also quite fun, especially if you are a Dolly Parton fan (spoiler alert: it rains on you a little, which the kiddos just loved!).

Tip #6: Think About Food Before You Go

There are two places that I think you absolutely need to try out while you are in Dollywood, because in both cases, I was super impressed with the food.

best food at dollywood

First, you’ve got to check out Red’s Drive-In. This is a newly updated area right next to the brand new Lightning Rod roller coaster. It has a very cheery 1950s diner atmosphere and offers truly delicious burgers, fries, shakes, and we were also very pleased to find a super yummy spinach salad with chicken, strawberries and feta cheese. Every single thing we ate at Red’s was, not just good, but fantastic so it’s definitely a top recommendation from me for your lunch plans. Pro tip: have as many members of your party as possible scope out seating while someone else stands in line to order. This will keep you from having to eat outside if the weather is too hot for that!

My second recommendation is to try the famous cinnamon bread at Grist Mill (pictured above). It makes for a perfect mid-afternoon snack for a family of 4, is quite possibly one of the most delicious things I have ever tasted, and it’s also wallet-friendly at just $5.99 (in contrast to a slice of apple pie from the famous 25 pound apple pie at Spotlight Bakery, which also serves 4, but is priced at $18).

Thinking about where you want to eat and scoping out reviews is important. We picked up some chicken strips somewhere in the Country Fair area of the park around 5pm, and I honestly can’t remember the name of the place. They were fine, but were just frozen chicken strips you could get anywhere. Nothing memorable or particularly delicious. Once we started eating them we were all wishing we were just back at Red’s! Don’t just roll up to any place for the food…do a little research first and you’ll feel great about your purchases!

And finally, I wanted to share one more wallet-friendly dining tip: water is completely free at Dollywood. Of course you can pay for bottled water if you like, but you can also ask anyone who serves soft drinks for a cup of ice water and you will get one and not be charged. Drinking water is important to do out in the heat, and it will also help you keep your dining costs down!

Tip #7: Know Your Group When Thinking About Rides

best family ride at Dollywood

My youngest daughter Layah just turned 4, and I was a little surprised to quickly discover that she did NOT want to ride just about anything. If it bounced or spun quickly or made any jarring moves, she was OUT. She even got on a ride, pitched a total fit because she was so terrified and had to get off. Poor kiddo.

So it’s good to know what your family wants to do at the park. I’ve never in my whole life seen a park that offers such an amazing variety. If you want to sit and be entertained all day, this is your park. If you want to ride roller coasters all day, this is your park. If you want kid-friendly but still thrilling rides for kids, then this is your park. And if you want to ride the super smooth ride River Battle that is calm as can be but that gets you totally soaked (the one ride Layah adored), then this park is also for you. It’s good to have a sense for what people want going in to keep you from wandering around the park confused about what to do next. And if your party wants to do a mix of things, you will be so impressed with how thoughtfully this park is put together. Near every roller coaster you can find something more laid back for the non-coaster folks, so if big sister and dad want to ride the thrill ride, mommy and little brother can go to the nearby calm attraction or to a playground situated close by. Families do NOT have to be separated for lengthy periods at Dollywood.

8. Introduce Your Kids to Dolly

If you are taking younger ones, they may not be too familiar with Ms. Dolly Parton. Here’s a very good (and quite inexpensive!) book to read to them before you go.

We had an excellent time and were so very impressed with the quality of attractions, the park upkeep and the friendly staff at Dollywood. I would very highly recommend it to anyone, and especially with a little advanced planning, I think you can make some truly wonderful memories with your family here. I hope my tips help! If you have any other tips you’d like to share with others, please leave them in the comments.

2016 Kia Sedona Review: The Ultimate Family Road Trip Minivan

June 14, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · 1 Comment

Thanks to Drive STI for providing a vehicle for review purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own, as always.

I can’t believe it’s already been 3 weeks since we returned from our big family vacation to Sanibel Island, Florida. We had such an incredible time at this special place, and we certainly hope to return to take in more of the sights and more of the incredible nature (I got within 15 feet of a manatee and within 1 foot of a shark. Got a picture of my swimming buddy just before the fisherman returned him to the ocean.).

shark

Sanibel Island is one of those destinations that isn’t super easy to get to if you don’t already live nearby. It’s so far down into Florida that it’s tough to make that drive for most folks. Therefore, you need to fly into the Ft. Myers Airport (a smaller airport which tends to have slighter higher fares…boo) and then you need to drive 40 minutes to get to the island. Since it is a long barrier island, you may need to drive another 10-30 minutes to reach your final destination. Totally doable, but having a vehicle is a necessity.

kia sedona road trip van

We spent the week testing out the 2016 Kia Sedona, and friends, having such a wonderful and road-trip PERFECT vehicle really added to the fun of the trip. I want to highlight some of the great features of this particular vehicle so that you can consider requesting it for any rental car needs you might have this summer, or if you happen to be in the market for a minivan, I want to show you reasons why you simply MUST give this vehicle a test drive.

kia sedona collage

The 2016 Kia Sedona starts at just $26,400 though some of the features I will be showcasing are add-ons. The DVD player in the back seat was noticed by my kids straight away. We didn’t realize our vehicle would have this feature or else we would have brought along some movies for the kids. So be aware of that great feature if you rent this vehicle for a trip!

We also just LOVED the cameras that helped us get in and out of our parking spaces. We had some tight squeezes, and since a van is considerably larger than the car we normally drive, this kept us from making any critical errors. 😉

And y’all, that trunk space was FANTASTIC! We loaded up on groceries for the entire week on the way from the airport to the island, and the trunk easily held all of our groceries and all of our luggage, which left ample leg room for all of the passengers.

kia sedona 3

The fact that the windows rolled down was super exciting to the girls (and honestly I’ve never seen this feature in a van, though maybe it’s more normal now than I realize? Either way, we loved it!). And we all enjoyed getting to customize the cooling for our specific areas of the car, especially since I run hot and my husband runs cold (and in the front of the van the seats had heaters and coolers. Say what?!).

kia sedona 5

We were also totally thrilled to discover not one, but TWO sunroofs. We certainly had to take advantage of that opportunity with a silly pic, and we also enjoyed that awesome sea breeze while we drove around the island.

kia sedona 4

We were very happy in this vehicle, and every member of our family of 5 felt really comfortable in it, including Grammio, who rode in the far back and said it was actually spacious and quite nice back there.

From the excellent navigational system, to the kid mirror above the rear view mirror (specifically designed to help you see the shenanigans happening in the back of the van), to Sirius radio playing just the type of music we wanted to hear (classical for our week of calm), the 2016 Kia Sedona was the most impressive vehicle Tim and I have ever had the pleasure of driving in our 19 years as drivers.

We miss the beach for sure, and we knew we would, but we never expected to miss a vehicle so much. The Kia Sedona was the best way to travel to the best vacation ever.

The Best Mobility Resource for Life After a Stroke

June 13, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

One of the things (among many) that I wasn’t really prepared for as I got older was the fact that my parents are getting older, too, and are starting to need more help from their children for various things. The roles are shifting. Are you experiencing this change, too?

In the case of my father, one of the reasons he needs some extra help is because he has survived two strokes. These strokes caused him to have some mobility challenges, and he needed some help figuring out what his options were moving forward.

My dad was lucky because he has been able to walk again with the assistance of walkers and canes. But so many people who survive a stroke will need to use a wheelchair, and it can be completely overwhelming to know where to even start when selecting a quality wheelchair, as well as everything that comes along with using a wheelchair, such as having a modified vehicle and related equipment.

photo mobility resources stroke_zpsjzr99wka.jpg  NMEDA (National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association) is an outstanding resource that anyone who is providing care and assistance for a stroke survivor (or really anyone needing mobility assistance) should check out. If you are going to be purchasing a modified vehicle and related equipment, NMEDA is on hand to take the guess work out of the process, and to provide you with expert advice, customization options, and to provide you with a list of Quality Assurance Program (NMEDA QAP) dealers so that you can feel confident about your purchase.

NMEDA offers a list of dealers in the United States and Canada that have QAP accredited technicians who work to make sure each vehicle provides excellent safety and comfort. You want this work done correctly, so be sure to leave it to the pros who adhere to the highest standards in mobility equipment installations thanks to their unique training program.

When faced with sudden mobility challenges, due to a stroke, an accident, or a whole host of other reasons, it can be totally overwhelming to have to become an instant expert on mobility equipment and modified vehicles in the midst of everything else you are juggling. Let NMEDA remove that challenge for you. They have already done the research, and they have already found the best, safest retailers. It’s one thing you can check off your to do list.

Razor Burn on Legs? How to Take Care of It and Move On with Your Busy Day!

June 11, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

This is a sponsored post for SheSpeaks/P&G. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Most moms out there are multitasking experts. You probably know how to make dinner while overseeing homework, and you probably know how to clean house while catching up with a friend over the phone, and you also probably know how to answer emails while enjoying a favorite television show.

Shaving during shower time is just one more way that busy mamas multitask (when we actually get enough time to take a shower, that is!). I confess that I sometimes skip over the shaving piece altogether so that I can avoid having to deal with possible razor burn. But now that it’s summer, I can’t put off shaving for as long as I can in the winter, so I found a simple and natural razor burn relief cream I could put together to use right after the shower.

home remedies for razor burn

Before I get into the recipe details, I should mention that the very best way to prevent razor burn in the first place is to shave with an excellent razor. I love the Venus & Olay razor (pro tip: find it for the best price at ) because it has a built-in moisturizer that works as you shave, cutting out the need for shave cream, and therefore saving me a bit of time. It has 5 blades and those Olay Moisture Bars help lock in moisture. Good stuff!

razor burn on legs use venus & olay

But to take your razor burn protection to the next level, try out my simple DIY recipe for after you shave.

You need a few simple ingredients and about 15 minutes to whip up a batch of “razor burn banishing” lotion. You will need the following:

  • 1/4 cup body oil of your choice (I recommend almond, grapeseed or organic olive oil)
  • 1/4 cup shea butter
  • 1 Tbsp beeswax
  • 10 drops Tea Tree essential oil
  • 5 drops Lavender essential oil

Put your body oil, shea butter and beeswax in a glass container, and put that glass container in a pan (to simulate a double boiler…if you actually have a double boiler, even better!) and bring to a simmer, stirring every minute or so. The beeswax will be the last element to melt, and I find that it takes close to 10 minutes for that to happen. Stir more often as you get closer to the 10 minute mark. In the end, your mixture should look like the picture on the right.

how to soothe razor burn

Allow this mixture to cool outside of the pan for about 5 minutes, and then add your drops of essential oil. Tea Tree oil is a great choice because it is very healing to irritated skin, and lavender is a great soothing oil. I also think the lavender addition helps the mixture smell really good!

After I added the essential oils, I used a hand mixer to blend everything together well, and then I let it cool. Your end result will look something like this:

razor burn remedy Apply this lotion just after getting out of the shower when you shave to help you stay free of irritations, and don’t forget to use a quality razor, like the , too! Here’s wishing you a summer full of super smooth, razor burn-free legs!

Summer Movie (and Toys) Must-Have: Zootopia Now Available!

June 10, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Going to the movies is SO much fun (in fact it was one of my very favorite things to do as a teenager), but once you start having to purchase 4 or more tickets for a show, the price tag can start to be a problem (at least it is for us!). We choose our movie trips VERY carefully…usually only doing 2 or 3 trips to the movie per year. Zootopia is one of the movies we chose to see this year when it came out in February. We hit a matinee in our nearest theater and we very thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, we loved it so much that we decided we wanted to own a copy when it released on DVD.

zootopia toys

Well, the time has come! We were sent a Blu-Ray Combo Pack to mark the DVD release which happened this week. So if your family had to miss the theater viewing, now you can buy a copy for less than it would have cost for a family of 4 to watch it at the movies. Woo hoo!

Not familiar with Zootopia? here’s a snippet about the film:

From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes a comedy-adventure set in the modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia. Determined to prove herself, Officer Judy Hopps, the first bunny on Zootopia’s police force, jumps at the chance to crack her first case – even if it means partnering with scam-artist fox Nick Wilde to solve the mystery.

We enjoyed watching the film again just as much as we did on our trip to the theater, only this time we could hit the pause button, or hit rewind when something extra funny happened (I’m looking at you, 3 humped camel joke!).

The fun was amplified by the great Zootopia toys, courtesy of TOMY. Have you seen them in the stores, yet? The talking Nick Wilde plush is getting toted all over the house for different pretend play games and Judy’s Police Cruiser is on the scene, taking care of the bad guys of any species that try to get away with mischief.

“It’s called a hustle, sweetheart.” Nick Wilde from @disney Zootopia is teaching Judy a few things about life in the city. The DVD is out now, as are these great toys from @tomy_toy.  #zootopia #pretendplay #disney #redwood #slyasafox #dumbbunny

Positive Discipline 101: Discipline Yourself First

June 7, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Please enjoy this thought-provoking guest post from Rebecca Eanes on the topic of disciplining ourselves as parents first. Very worthwhile read!

Parents often want to know the best way to discipline their children, but learning to discipline ourselves first – that is to manage our own emotions and actions – is essential. Children learn the most from watching our example. No matter what discipline methods we decide upon, if we can’t discipline ourselves, it’s very difficult to effectively discipline our children. I learned this the hard way.

Approximately a year after my transition from conventional parenting methods to positive parenting, I noticed a worsening in my children’s attitudes and behaviors. I was disappointed, feeling that my efforts to change course had failed after all. It had worked so beautifully in the beginning, and I’d seen a great improvement in their behavior. We had reconnected and rebuilt a trusting relationship, and our home was a happy one. Suddenly, it all seemed to be going awry, and I didn’t understand why until I took a long, hard look in the mirror. One night, after I’d finally gotten them both to sleep after a long and difficult day, I realized a hard truth. My children’s behavior was off track because mine was off track. They were simply following my example.

I was poorly handling sleep deprivation and a bout of severe anxiety which was coming out in my quick temper and sharp tone. My toxic feelings were spilling out and affecting my children. Even though I was using all the “right methods” as it related to positive parenting, I wasn’t living what I was teaching, and the thing about children is that they learn most by what we live.

In 2014, I started an online group for parents who wanted to end the cycle of yelling because I had learned how important it was in the journey of positive parenting to be able to manage your own emotions and behaviors. Within weeks, thousands had joined. Parents yelled because they were tired. They yelled because they were overwhelmed. They yelled because they were stressed. Sometimes the yelling escalated to physical discipline or verbal abuse, and then there was the guilt. These parents were loving, good people who were struggling to discipline themselves, and though there were many instigators, it boiled down this: They didn’t take good enough care of their mental and emotional health and they didn’t know what to do with that bubbling hot anger that surfaces so quickly.

To be self-disciplined parents, we have to create margin for self-care. We can’t pour out all of ourselves every day and never take the time to fill back up. I think sometimes we feel guilty for taking care of our own needs – like we are selfish. It isn’t selfish, it’s necessary. Make yourself a priority, because the better you feel, the better you will be able to manage the frustrations that arise.

positive discipline

As for the bubbling, hot anger, here are some ways to deal with it when it arises:

1. If you feel the need to yell, use a loud, silly voice or say “toot toot” while cupping your mouth with your hands. Yes, you will look silly, but silly is better than scary to your kids.

2. Do something physical. Splash cold water on your face, jog in place, or do a few jumping jacks.

3. Walk away and step outside for a minute. Breathe in the fresh air and imagine it is filling you up with patience.

4. Say a mantra to yourself such as “I am a peaceful person.”

5. If you have a tendency to lash out and strike or spank your child when you are angry, walk away immediately. If you are followed, you may need to go to a room and lock the door while you repeat your mantra and breathe slowly.

6. Deep breaths in for a count of 4, hold for 7, slowly release for a count of 8. Repeat until you feel calm.

7. Look at a baby picture of your child. This will often bring back tender feelings of adoration.

8. Call a trusted partner or friend.

9. Close your eyes and imagine you are in peaceful surroundings.

10. Look at something funny or even make a silly face in the mirror or at your kids.

Cirque du Soleil Presents: OVO (19 Cities Remain on the Tour!)

June 1, 2016 · by Tiffany Merritt · Leave a Comment

Are you looking for something out of the ordinary to do this summer with your kids? What if you could offer them the unique opportunity to watch the world-famous Cirque de Soleil in your own city (or one that is within striking distance)? If you aren’t familiar with this absolutely AMAZING group, just take a little peak at one of their performances:

OVO is currently on tour, and my family absolutely cannot wait to put our provided tickets to use here in Chattanooga in July (show dates for Chattanooga are from July 20-24th, with 7 total performances!). From the website,

“OVO is a headlong rush into a colourful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. The insects’ home is a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion.

When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives.

It’s love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual.

OVO is overflowing with contrasts. The hidden, secret world at our feet is revealed as tender and torrid, noisy and quiet, peaceful and chaotic. And as the sun rises on a bright new day the vibrant cycle of insect life begins anew.”

cirque du soleil OVO

This is going to be a great show, friends! And I’m so excited for my home city, because it is our very first time ever hosting Cirque du Soleil. If you are a local reader, definitely take a look at the schedule and reserve your seats for your family. And if you are located elsewhere, don’t fret!
